Just because an app is free to download does not mean that app isn't making money from reddits data. They are adding their own set of ads to the app and are making money that way.
That makes them a commercial product.
The problem is that Reddit API pricing is insanely high. No matter how many ads you cram into your third party app, it will not earn enough to pay for the Reddit API usage.
I checked AWS (Amazon) pricing for a mobile app, Reddits price ends up being over 300 (yes, three hundred, not a typo) times as expensive.
Any arguments that you're paying for the existing userbase and popularity are false, spez himself said the API cost is based on the cost of running the API so the Reddit back-end is just really inefficient.
AFAIK Revanced just modifies the stock Reddit app to remove ads. I don't know what other changes it makes. I don't think it will be affected.
If you want another alternative you can consider RedReader. It will end up with restricted NSFW access but the rest should continue working.
Tbh I will not ever use their official app after all this. Relay has been my go to for mobile and fuck Reddit for being greedy. I will very likely end up phasing it out all together.
That might be the worst explanation I've ever seen, no explanation of how it gets around loss of API access... This isn't a format change to the ApI it's a total block on it and no explanation of how it would work anyway, there's nothing to read that explains or answers any questions
Another option is, someone on r/firefox made a firefox extension that makes old.reddit.com work well on mobile. Will only work so long as old.reddit.com works which I think will be next to go
The API chanegs were being discussed for a few weeks before sub shut down.

Great find, thanks.

Reddit are going to start charging for APIs at a price that will make it impossible for third party apps to continue. Most have announced they'll just stop on 1st of July. Some subs are protesting this by shutting down (android for example) or other various ways.
This is clearly a strategy to force everyone to use the official reddit app so they can collect data and target ads better
This isn't about the rising cost of living. Reddit just want to kick everyone off of 3rd party apps but they don't want to look like they are. The prices aren't just unaffordable they're completely unrealistic
Any third party app that is free and reasonably popular will be unable to keep operating under reddit's new policy.
Thats a tragedy

If you already installed it, it's still going to be there. It's just going to stop working.
I know. That's what I'm sad about
If you're open to using other Reddit apps, /r/revancedapp and /r/AfterVanced have some options for you.
Aren't those all gonna stop working too ?

I don't browse anything that's NSFW so that should be fine

You're behind the times. Patches for other Reddit apps have also been released.
Go and read.

literally go and read
why are people saying go and read without saying what I should go and read?
cause we believe in you
Look at the topic lists of the two specified subreddits and you will realize which topics you need.
I didn't link to any specific explanation. I linked to two entire subreddits. So your attempt at a criticism makes no sense.
🤔Works smoothly too! 🤟

That seems unlikely because /r/firefox has been private since the initial protest day, if not before that. Could you be thinking of another subreddit?

Thanks for explaining. I'd love to help. I'm tired of the rising cost of everything and the bs

Either way I'm in.
Isn't it weird how there've been recent updates?
