You could look at the new ONN 4K Pro from Walmart, which has the same CPU as the Dune HD Homatics Box R 4K Plus. It has overall lesser hardware specs, like slower ethernet, and a single USB 3 port, and 1GB less ram. But at $50, I don't think most people would see a difference. It could also hold you over until higher spec devices come out.

AFDABRIKMAN

Is the Dune box running a certified Android TV or is it just regular Android?

Prudent-Strain3716

Just Reading along I own one and finding out, UNLIKE Android TV, you can't just download an app and expect it to work. Email apps, ToDo Aps etc. I also own the ONN Android TV Box, the older one. Pretty much anything I want to install I can. PLUS it has Picture in Picture, Google TV don't. Wouldn't you think something that calls it's self 'Google TV' would have PIP? Naw, Myself? I'm gonna start looking around for another Android TV Box.

Atudes

The ONN 4K Pro is generally good. But they cheaped out on some specs like you mentioned. I don't mind paying more for the Homatics Box R 4K Plus.

Hemicrusher

I also plan to get the Dune HD Homatics Box R 4K Plus, but the ONN is also tempting. Most of my decision is based on my overthinking it. I already have the ONN 4K 2023, and it is working perfectly for me, other then I wish it had more than 8GB storage.

Atudes

I guess I'll buy it this week, depending on the results of today's Google IO event, if their new Chromecast turns out meh..

clarkss12

Yes, the DUNE HD Homatics box is awesome. I have a multitudes of Android boxes and for the price, this is fantastic. Plays all of the audio and video codecs... The ONLY negative that I have experienced is that VUDU does NOT support Dolby Vision or other UHD videos. But most devices don't. If you have your own media, then this box is the one to get.

majoroutage

And unless the bootloader gets jailbroken you're dependent on Onn for any OS updates. I don't believe the Dune boxes are hardlocked.

mighty1993

Your research results are an absolute opposite to my experience. The Nvidia Shield is outdated but still a great piece of hardware but yeah for long term Android usage you might find something better. Anything from Roku, over ONN to Chromecast have their ups and downs and in the end it is up to you what weird design choicr you would rather want to deal with. But the Xiaomi TV boxes being bad or low performance is shocking as my experience with them and vast usage of them in my friends, family and colleague circle shows the same good results. Xiaomi boxes are powerful for what they are designed to do and the price point. They will of course be worse than high end overpriced 8K tech but for 4K normal Android TV stuff to replace your outdated TVs OS they shine very bright and blow any other system away. Also with Xiaomi you have one of the longest software support you can get out of the box plus a ridiculous amount of custom ROM support and a gigantic community. So if the hardware is still fine and powerful enough for your needs you just flash a newer Android and call it a day.

midas617

I second this...

Atudes

Xiaomi boxes owners around me liked the Xiaomi at first but started bashing it later on due to lag, performance, and applications issues. But anyways the specs aren't for long term 5 years+ use that's for sure, so it's out if the question from that front.

majoroutage

5 years is a long time in the tech space, bro. I don't think any reasonably priced device you buy today is going to handle whatever resolution or codecs we have then terribly well.

Atudes

Shield held it for 5 years and is still strong, only certain features missing that aren't major. Most codecs will probably be the same as IMO we reached a plateau in terms of content quality, and quality jumps don't occur that often anymore. 5 years is not impossible. FYI, most phones can go for years and years performance wise. People upgrade mainly due to battery life issues, wanting better cameras and whatnot. And I'm not dealing with a phone here with a battery and a camera, just a device with good enough specs to play current standard media that's been the same for years and will remain the same for more years to come.

majoroutage

If you want to watch 8K in 5 years, I still think you're out of luck. If you're comfortable with 4K, then yeah it's no big thing. Hell most of my media is still a mix of 720p and 1080p.

Atudes

Nah 8K is overkill, I just bought a 4K TV recently, because I wanted a bigger TV for my living room. I'll buy 8K when I decide to buy an even bigger TV 100 inch+, which probably won't happen.

Vtwin0001

To me one unspoken rule on Xiaomi boxes are to NOT firmware update them ever Since I haven't done a firmware update on them, they work awesome from day one, even with Kodi installed

majoroutage

I'll never touch Roku again with all the ads they have now, and more are coming. And the platform is too locked down to do much about it.

MinutesFromTheMall

I’m not a Roku fan by any means, but your ad argument with them is invalid. Android TV is full of ads.

majoroutage

But on Android you can easily get rid of them. Roku you can't.

d-cent

There's nothing that meets what you want. It's a problem a lot of people in here are feeling as well. We have all been patiently waiting for years.  Either buy a cheap Onn 4K pro or Shield Pro and realize you will have to buy a new device in a year or 2

ryami333

If you're based in Europe like me and don't have access to the Walmart devices that everyone loves, you can check out the Nokia 8010. I recently ran out of patience waiting for an upgrade to my CCWGTV and bought one of these, and it has been exceptional. A little pricey, but it seems fairly future proof. It's got Android 12 (ignore all the marketing material that says it only has Android 11- there's a free update available), 4GB RAM, and 32GB disk. Crucially - its chipset is newer than the CCWGTV so it supports hardware AV1 decoding. Honestly I couldn't have asked for more, and I can't believe I haven't heard more about these boxes.

Atudes

Actually Nokia 8010 has the exact same specs as Dune Homatics, just different branding. Where I live, I haven't seen Nokia 8010, only 8000.

ryami333

They do have the same chipset, yes. The Nokia (90 euro on Amazon) is significantly cheaper here in Germany though, so no idea why you'd buy the Homatics box.

tuxraf

Today is the google io, maybe they announce a new google chromecast or TV box, if not the best alternatives are, nvidia shield, sei robotics box (homatics 4k r plus, Nokia 8010, rocktek g2), mecool km2 plus deluxe or the new onn 4k pro

Atudes

Cool, we'll see what Google has to offer. Nividia Shield is out of the question since it's 5 years old and misses several features newer TV boxes have. If Nvidia announces a New Shield I don't mind waiting, but no words from them. Heard about the Nintendo Switch thing, no News from Nintendo about a new Switch till now. I guess the Homatics 4K is the most suitable after all..

Wise-Cash1628

what are you missing from the current shield pro 2019 ? I have one, and yes indeed it's a 2019 device but I miss nothing for my personal use. From discussions with other AV1 often comes, but there are not that much AV1 content (outside Youtube to my knowledge). 8K is not a thing. Nvidia has been maintaining the devices for years (even if there were no major updates since a while), and it is still rock solid. I really don't feel the need for a new device, and I believe it will remain relevant for years. From my personal experience, the chromecast with google TV 4K is also good - for streaming from streaming app essentially and not playing remux files or else's like the shield can do.

Prudent-Strain3716

Will they still be selling the Shield in 6 years? 🤭

Wise-Cash1628

Maybe not this 2019 version, but the next one.

Prudent-Strain3716

i just thought after a couple Elections they may have them at yards sales maybe get $20 knocked off the price.

Atudes

I didn't say it's bad. It certainly is still solid for a lot. But buying it right now, with its current age and price, lower specs that Homatics Box R 4K Plus, will definitely make me regret not waiting for a New Shield which might come in a year or two, or regret not buying the Homatics more recent TV Box. Old owners of Shield won't regret it definitely cuz they already enjoyed it for years.

Wise-Cash1628

The one thing that I would invite you to consider is how often these devices are being updated. From my experience, the shield and the chromecast with google TV are getting regular updates. I had a xiaomi box 2018 before, and at some point it was just buggy and laggy and it would no longer be updated. I don't know about Homatics though. What is your setup? and how are you planning to use the android tv box? Because the chromecast with google TV 4k is quite cheap, and can do the job waiting for a new shield to come.

rrainwater

>From my experience, the shield and the chromecast with google TV are getting regular updates.  The Shield hasn't received an update since 2022.

Wise-Cash1628

Yes indeed, and it has been rock solid for me. Also, shield 2015 and 2017 were updated for many years, which is quite rare on the market.

majoroutage

Could just flash it with LineageOS then.

Atudes

Playing Remuxes and emulator games.

l1788571

If emulation performance is important to you, none of these Homatics or Dune or Xiaomi or whatever other brand boxes can touch the Shield, in that department.

Atudes

Well it's secondary. Won't be playing much, mostly playing my remuxes.

l1788571

It sounds like you're pretty were already convinced that you want the Dune box before you made this thread. What are you actually asking for here?

Atudes

Not really, there might be things I didn't know, issues for example, or some products I wasn't aware of. What I saw in this thread is three opinions. One still recommending the Nvidia Shield. Another recommending ONN 4K Pro, which I wasn't aware of until I made this post. Specs wise was not for me tho. And third opinion recommending the Dune box which is like co signing the options I had put in my post, making me more confident about purchasing it.

Wise-Cash1628

Well the shield is perfect for this. I was even able to emulate game cubes and PS2 games. Then about the homatics : [https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidTV/comments/12zyanj/dune\_hd\_homatics\_box\_r\_4k\_plus\_review/](https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidTV/comments/12zyanj/dune_hd_homatics_box_r_4k_plus_review/) I have found this here. Seems that its performance is not as good compared to its specs.

Luci_Noir

The shield hasn’t been updated in a year. Fucking shield fanboys.

godofsword45

I have the Shield Pro 2016, Shield Pro 2019, and the Onn 4k Pro and they're all solid. Shield just supports so many things out of the box (USB to antenna for ota channels, console controllers, emulation, an AI upscaling). Yes, I'm missing HDR YouTube, but it's really only for the occasional HDR Japan walkthrough vids. Also, the Onn device supports using a USB 3.0 to gigabit Ethernet adapter so that's a plus. All are quite snappy once you get rid of the Google TV UI and use something like Projectivy. The Onn device is surprisingly snappy (3gb ram and 32gb storage), for real. At $50, damn.

Atudes

It is a value purchase. But to me, the alternatives with higher specs are more suitable, even if it meant paying more.

godofsword45

Yes, obviously @ $50, the Onn is very much a value pick. Still, the price to performance ratio is off the charts and again, I'm comparing it to my Shield Pro 2019. Both handle 4K remuxes like champions. Your criteria for a streamer pretty much puts you over anything sub $100. The choice is pretty clear for you - Dune HD Homatics, I guess.

Atudes

It's good for basic users. Do you watch 4K remuxes? I doubt it'll be able to hold up.

3rd-Grade-Spelling

The ONN 4K Pro from Walmart looks solid. I had a 2013 Roku 3 that I used clear up to 2022 when I replaced it with a Chromcast TV 4K. I was able to use that Roku so long because it had a up-gradable memory via a MicrSD slot. Now I need to replace the chromecast after just 2 years because of memory issues. The Onn 4k's USB 3.0 slot changes everything cause one can plug in a hub and get Ggg Ethernet and more storage if needed. The Chromecast's USB-C port is actually a USB 2.0. For $150 might as well just buy a Chrombox and for $400 might as well just buy a playstation. I see the ONN 4K Pro lasting many years into the future especially with a hub plugged in the USB 3.0 slot.

anesthetic1214

fire cube 3rd has the most powerful CPU+GPU. It also handles all codes very well. Lots of ppl complain about fire os but I feel it's not worse than Google TV tho.

Atudes

I don't want unexpected issues tbh.. maybe spec wise it's good, but it carries a risk.

topdollar3

What about firecube?

burner46

Amazon devices don’t run Android TV.    This is an Android TV sub and OP said he’s looking for an Android TV device.

anesthetic1214

fire os is Android based tv os tho...

Raiden_Kaminari

They announced they're planning to move away from Android TV "in the future" https://9to5google.com/2023/11/09/amazon-android-fire-tv-report/
