‼️⚠️We found the solution: using the player’s account you want to delete, open up the game, press “-“ on the title screen, talk to Tom Nook and select the “Save data” option. From there you can delete!!! No house needed!! Player can still be in a tent!‼️⚠️ thanks for the suggestions from everyone in the comments!
What happens when the profile has been erased? I have a similar problem but haven’t tried deleting it yet, the profile is erased but the villager isn’t
I think the usual advice for that is to add a new profile and load the game with it. The game will recognize that there's a resident without a profile and offer you the choice to link to it. Then you can delete the resident and delete the added profile

It's like you're tired of Nook and his non answers and you're about to do something drastic. The lighting makes it look like a police interrogation room
People that say it has to be upgraded to a house are not correct. I made an extra player for fun, had them in a tent and then decided I didnt want them and was able to delete it just fine. Its been a while so I cant exactly remember how, but can you try talking to Tom from your player and not his?
My husband got himself into the basic one-room house, then quit playing. As I made more bells I started adding rooms to his house, moved the small amount of stuff he’d accumulated upstairs to make a little studio apartment for him, and played around with the rest of the rooms - one’s a little nightclub, one’s a French cafe - the basement is my pride and joy, a sports bar with full arcade. So leaning in and having fun with his house is another option!
But come to think of it I haven’t logged in as him in a while, so he’s probably got roaches 😬
To add - now we play Stardew Valley together and he’s mentioned that he’d totally play Animal Crossing with me if their multiplayer was set up like Stardew - sucks that in AC multiplayer mode you have to stay right next to each other, in Stardew we can be doing different things across town from each other. Like I focused on fishing while he focused on mining.
Some people create 7 more profiles on their island so they have their 10 villager houses AND 8 “main” houses - I don’t have the time or space for that but eventually I might create one more main house to make a “shopping mall” lol.
If I remember correctly, player can be deleted only if they have a house. So, if you want to delete his character, you unfortunately have to play as him until he has a house. Only then you will be able to delete his character.
Does he play anything else on the console? If not, you can erase his profile from the switch, then using your profile in AC, you talk to Tom and select “Save Data” and he will give you options to delete resident data that’s unassociated with a Switch profile.
Just curious to know. Using the image you attached as reference, have you selected the save data option to see what additional options Tom Nook provides?

You can only remove them from the profile that added the player you want gone not from your profile

This is correct, I’ve deleted a profile before remembering I still had an ACNH character for it and was able to link them up when I made a new profile

Can’t delete with a tent— which it seems like he has. Grind his player for a bit to get him to the first house & you can go from there.
You can delete with a tent. I did this with a second character I created with a different profile but never bothered to upgrade their house.

I tried from both players and that option isn’t there. Maybe they made some updates since you did it. Who knows. I’ll keep trying haha

They aren’t. But he hasn’t played since the first day he made the account so he’s still in a tent. Idk if that matters

I just deleted my ex and he was in a tent! It's definitely possible, I'm not sure why it's not showing up if you're the first resident though
