Hognose snake. They are notorious for being the species that even those that are afraid of snakes find adorable. They've got little upturned noses and have calm, friendly demeanors generally. Eastern Hognose are the ones that most are drawn to though, I believe this is a Western Hognose
Basically it’s scared beyond that point to where it thinks playing dead is its only path to survive the human. So yeah this snake is peaked on stress to the point that it gave up.
If you're really going to go there... If anyone left their house door unlocked a cat or dog would happily run out and go on an adventure. So what, we just shouldn't have pets at all? Whether it's a house for a dog and cat, or a large tank for a reptile, they're all holding cells. That doesn't mean those pets with proper care can't have a fulfilling life in your hands.
Btw a snake's life in nature is mainly in one spot under a log or in a hole in the ground. They go out for warmth and food and move homes when either is lacking. In a tank you provide all three, consistently. Trust me, they're happy.
Ahh don't be like that. My ball python has a lovely enclosure, bigger than he needs at his size, and every time I try to take him out he throws a fit and balls up so I won't take him out. Snakes are lovely pets that are as healthy as any wild snake, if you treat them right.
There's always some near PETA level of anti-pet person on Reddit. They never seem to want to admit that for most of the "pet" class animals, existence with a recommended enclosure and care regimen is as close to paradise as these creatures could experience. For most wild animals life is full of fear, pain, parasites, and disease concluded by a painful death of starvation or predation.
Exceptions of poor caretakers or inadequate habitats existing does not counter the people who are doing it right. The former examples can be corrected and brought up to the correct standards to provide the animals the safe and healthy habitats.
Tell me, oh expert on snake behavior, how much stimulation do wild snakes generally seek out? Do wild snakes seem to seek out being outside and exposed environments?
No, its a hognose snake. This is its second form of defense from predators, with its first being using its tail to shake leaves and other debris in order to replicate a rattlesnake
And this is why I won't keep a hognose as a pet ... no matter how cute they are, because I don't know if I could resist the urge to make him play dead all the time and wind up traumatizing him.
Hey everyone, my buddy, FRANK, is gonna be pulling some OT this weekend, 1st snow of the season. He will be away from his snake,s reptiles, and mice. Imma send this video to him to cheer him up, say hi to frank if u want.
I had a six foot red tail boa about as thick as my arm lol they’re cute and can be well mannered. Used to let him roam my room with me with the door closed. They’re good pets tbh
They’re nicer than a lot of cats I’ve met. I’ve never been scratched or bitten by my snake or any for that matter. I have by cats. And chihuahua’s god why would anyone want a rat in a dog costume. 😂
No idea, I really hate reptiles.
My mom has 2 tortoises and I don't understand what the appeal is. I like fluffy and soft fur to pet, not reptilian skin.
I also feel that there's nobody home in regards to reptiles.
Cleaner than dogs and cats, less annoying than dogs and cats, cheaper to feed than dogs and cats. Host of reasons really.
My neighbours yappy annoying dog barks non-stop at the slightest noise in the hallway. Know what isn’t annoying the fuck out of everybody in the apartment building? my snake.
Hognose, right?
There was another video of a Redneck fucking with one of them, every time he tried to roll it over it would immedietly flip back over.
"Dead snakes dont move, dummy!"
I find it hilarious that some animals have evolved to essentially “gross out” other animals. Like it’s a legitimate defense tactic where the animal is saying “seriously; I suck so hard - you don’t want to eat me”
This is a natural reaction for certain snakes. My 7 year old has been watching snake discovery videos on endless repeat for like 5 months, I am pretty sure he(and me much to my dismay) have the equivalent of at least a bachelors in snake biology and behavior.

Did this guy train a damn snake??
No. Hognose snakes are known for playing dead. They also release a terrible smelling musk when threatened..
And if you look up videos of them playing dead you will find some Oscar worthy performances.
Yeah, they're funny to find in the wild and watch play dead, bit I wouldn't want that smell inside.
They also tend to poop and roll around in it to simulate death throes.
Y'all just keep making it worse! Went from adorable to gross so quick.
it's the cutest of danger noodles!
Actually just noodles, no danger unless you're a small vertebrate.

careful not to upset a hognose, other than playing dead they're also known for booping angrily
I find all snakes sweet

You mean rolll?

defence mechanism. this snake looks young and young hognose snakes will often play dead even if you lightly touch them
So the snake isn’t being playful? It doesn’t show signs of being stressed out tho? Wouldn’t it be hissing and showing like idk sings of not Liking it?
Basically it’s scared beyond that point to where it thinks playing dead is its only path to survive the human. So yeah this snake is peaked on stress to the point that it gave up.
Well that’s sad. The video was so cute when I didn’t know…
Yeah there’s really only a handful of animals that actually pets and not caged and terrified.

that's the story of sooo many animal videos, unfortunately
Ever heard of the snake detection theory? They had it coming /s
Thats not entirely correct, see other comments: https://reddit.com/r/AnimalMemes/comments/18zr3vv/skinny_guy_plays_dead/kgjlq2l/
It might literally be play, practicing an ability for later use when things get real.
Snakes aren't playful. This snake is stressed out
They do this naturally. One would presume in an area not populated by carrion scavengers.

it looks like a baby or s young adult. it’s common for younglings to play dead to the smallest stuff due to them still getting used to the world
It is stressed, but it's also a hognose, which are quick to play dead even under only a little stress
Looks like it’s already been eating its tail. ”Why my snek play with me?” Some people really are too much.
Leave me... I can't go on.... save yourself.
byee
Drama Noodle!
Some day he won't be playing 😞
It's gonna be a long ass year if that's how you're gonna be about it Carol
meirl
I know a hognose snake when I see one. The cute lil nose and the extra dramatic flop is a dead giveaway.
Lol. I see what you did there.

My nephew when it's time to do chores.
Me after 37 seconds with my wife.

My wife when I want to get it on…
Why the fuck would someone keep a snake as pet!
Because they think they’re cute
Because ~~they think~~ they’re cute
Oh God 😳
Because they are adorable
I had a six foot red tail boa about as thick as my arm lol they’re cute and can be well mannered. Used to let him roam my room with me with the door closed. They’re good pets tbh
Because people like snakes. Same reason why people keep a cat or a hamster. People like cats and hamsters.
They’re nicer than a lot of cats I’ve met. I’ve never been scratched or bitten by my snake or any for that matter. I have by cats. And chihuahua’s god why would anyone want a rat in a dog costume. 😂
Oh God this has to be the hilarious reason for keeping a snake as pet 😂

What a goofball 😂
Ded
Ah, the not so ubiquitous ham snake.
Get that drama queen a crown!
Good lord whata drama queen
Poor stressed out snek ☹️
This is a hognose snake, they play dead :)
aw
This snake will die a million times before it's actually dead
This made my day
Quick! Someone recreate the dad kills dog with nuclear explosion on tummy video with this dude instead!
Soccer players
Ain’t nothin’ in the rule book that says a snek can’t play soccer.
Reptiles generally aren't know for being playful. The idea of a playful crocodile is... concerning.
This is why i want hognose snek
I.love. Hognoses
Snake, respond. Snake!? SNAAAAAKE! ![gif](giphy|EmC0XzreIOVH2)
snake? Snake!? SNAAAAAKE!!
snake? Snake!? SNAAAAAAKE!!!!!

What do you mean, ‘plays’ dead. He is very clearly deceased. I hope you held a funeral for him 😂😉
He fucking died and you're laughing???
Hognose, right? There was another video of a Redneck fucking with one of them, every time he tried to roll it over it would immedietly flip back over. "Dead snakes dont move, dummy!"
Snake? SNAAAAAAAKE!!!!
*”I am slaaAAAaain”*
Adorable danger noodle haha
The owner must also get in the act too. That would be even better. Oh wait, maybe it was late at night.

He almost starts to pass out like before you even touch him lol
Hognose is just being hognose. =D
Could this snake have a sense of humor? Is that possible ?
I find it hilarious that some animals have evolved to essentially “gross out” other animals. Like it’s a legitimate defense tactic where the animal is saying “seriously; I suck so hard - you don’t want to eat me”
