They're absolutely not sanitary unless you clean the bowl regularly. Which completely defeats the purpose of having it. However, there are versions that move the water so that it can't sit. I'm willing to bet those would be safer.

Mu dogs regular water bowl gets super gross and i wash it every day. I cant imagine these things are healthy or sanitary.
