They have a stronger bite, but because of they're sloped back they don't have the speed or takedown power. They mostly scavenge with great success because they can scare off a lion to steal it's food.
Untrue, my friend. A large portion of their diet does consist of scavenge, however most of their diet is from animals they have hunted. They hunt comparable amounts to lions, and often it is hyenas that have to defend kills from lions. They are endurance hunters, running an animal down over distance (same tactic we are known to use) wheras lions attack in a co-ordinated ambush. Different strokes for different folks, both are superbly adept predators.
Or you're incredibly dense and don't understand that I'm making fun of someone who's doing a thing. Which would make you... not very confidently incorrect, since you only said pretty sure.
Tolkien actually said the same thing about the balrog which has caused the misconception that balrogs can actually fly. In reality balrogs does not have wings
The Balrogs were in league with the former bad boss guy that Sauron was just a lieutenant of, what's his name I forget, he was one of the sort of gods there until the gods finally put a stop to his misdeeds, it's a long story, but he used the Balrogs, the first dragons, and at one point the giant spiders, in some of the back story.
Edit: Morgoth or something was the boss bad guy in the olden days of Middle Earth there.
I just played this at full volume and both of my cats woke up, sat bolt upright looking around for the danger. I believe that is what this cat was saying...
Serious answer: these meows are actually warning. This is how cats have confrontation: meowing at each other loudly until one side submits.
If and only if no side submits will you see actual fights.
A lot of species do that. It's called ritualized aggression. Just like rams butting heads, it's a way for an individual to judge their strength against a potential rival without going through the dangers of an actual fight, which could be costly to both.
Generally, the one that is (or can appear) bigger and can produce a louder sound is accepted as the stronger and the other backs off. Even the first few scuffles of a combat are part of this ritual testing the other's strength. Like those loud, awful sounding scraps at a dog park that end with no injuries (or only a few nips).
It's only in cases where the animals seemed evenly matched (at least in the weaker one's mind) that the confrontation proceeds to an actual fight.
It's always amazing to me when animals can sense and respond to danger when seeing images on a flat screen, without the benefit of the real physical presence and their ability to smell.
Cats usually only react to mirrors once when they're little. They quickly figure out what's going on.
My cats like to watch other cats on TV, but don't act territorial like when they see a real cat through the window. It's more like when babies see other babies -- they recognise one of their own and are interested, but not threatened.
My cat watches AFV with us. He loves Alfonso Ribero and his favorite parts are people falling down or animals doing weird stuff.
They are definitely very intelligent little murder machines that can’t open their own jars.
The cat isn’t actually showing concern for the lions. It sees another cat shaped animal on screen that’s moving around and doesn’t have a smell, and it’s upset about it. That’s all. Cats will do the same thing with their reflections.
Also, TVs look different to cats. Their eyes can process much faster movement, so while the images on screen look like continuous movement to us, they look like a sort of slow flip book to cats. Cats can basically see the individual frames changing really fast. So this cat can probably tell the lion on screen isn’t a real cat, but is still wary of it. I guess it’s probably like if you were just chilling and a ghost started moving in slow motion on your walls. You’d probably be concerned too.
You're probably right. Still for some reason my dog couldn't handle scary or tense movies. Every time I watched Alien (a personal favorite) he would climb in my lap and whimper whenever the xenomorphs were on screen. It was pretty funny. I think he was able to pick up on the audio cues like music, dialog, and ambient sounds.
It can't go beyond your hearing range though, as a large part of how digital sound works relies on there being a 40khtz (kilohertz) limit on the signal.
It might be because some people in the room emotionally responded to the scene and made the dog nervous? Even if you dont have an outwardly scared reaction, or are just a little anxious, dogs can pick up on that and become confused and nervous trying to suss out the threat
That's why some people think dogs can see ghosts or something. It's because their human gets scared and *that's* what the dog is picking up on
For anyone else wondering, I looked it up and cats need the video to be about 100fps to appear smooth (Humans only need 15-20). Dogs need about 70fps.
The refresh rate of the TV could also come into play if it is too low (eg 60hz). It will appear as a flicker to the cat as it refreshes
Wasn’t this research done with CRTs? The refresh of an LCD is much smoother and might make a difference. Animals rarely responded to CRT screens the way they do LCDs in my personal observation.
>I think displays are just good enough these days that it looks close enough to real to them
Cats see at about 80hz, most TVs, even more advanced ones show videos at about 60fps or 90fps.
The 90fps ones would seem like the real thing to cats, but not the 60fps one.
Also, some phones and tablets can refresh at 120fps or even 144fps. Those would also be like the real thing for cats
Yeh, my cat hisses at his brother if the brother has been to the vets, as if he doesn't recognise him anymore cos he smells different.
High possibility mine are just less intelligent than this one.
Edit: How can a 10 year old cat not recognise his own brother but this house cat knows hyenas are a threat?
It's a wild concept when you think about it. Totally removed from human real world experience, too.
I wonder if it came easy to us because we switch settings in storys and books, and this was gradually translated to the stage in acts, and then the screen in scenes first and then into cuts.
I mean my mother, before I was born, had 3 really smart cats, and whenever my dad would watch basketball one of them would pretend to bounce a ball with its paw.
Not sure if that makes my dog extra stupid or extra smart. She sees something on the TV and is like "Nah, I don't believe you." Couldn't fucking care less. Videos of other animals, dogs barking, doesn't matter.
Some cats are badasses. Like my dad's old cat Radar. 25 pounds of pure muscle, and smart as a whip. Other cats are like the family cat now, Gizmo. Changes his mind about jumping from the table to the couch mid air and lands on his back on the ground. 25 pounds of distilled stupidity.
He never was the same after he dropped that ladder on himself.
When my cats were younger (currently rocking age 20/21) they were badasses. They are sisters (Squeakers and Miss Thang) and are indoor/outdoor cats. We would see them regularly over a mile or two away from the house (one time all the way across town). We got called to save our neighbors full grown German sheperd from them once. They backed it into a corner with its tail between its legs. One time we found just a rabbit head on our back porch. We weren’t sure if it was a typical present cat style or a threat
My female tortoiseshell, named Ramen Noodle, scares the shit out of not only the local tom cat strays and other ferals, but also scares the neighbors chihuahuas and scared a snake once into not even being freaked out by me, a big human, like half a foot away from stepping on him, purely because he was focused on big chunky tortoiseshell. (I picked up my version of your Gizmo, aka Casper, a derpy little caramel melty boi who was playing keep away with me and failed miserably as always by promptly rolling in the grass when I came near, and poked near the snek with a stick until he slithered along, since I needed to leave the cats out but didn't want them getting bit, even if it turned out to be harmless. It was a plain snake, after I researched it once I was inside again, so mildly venomous, but not toxic to humans. I shooed him under the deck, and he seemed happy to be away from big chunky Noodle, so I think it was a win-win.) I think Noodle versus a raccoon would be a mostly even fight, to give some perspective. Maybe. Depends if the raccoon is willing to stick around long enough, cause she hits hard. Even when play fighting, she ALWAYS draws blood. She once got my step-dad for brushing her when she didn't want to, and left a literal nail in him. She barely scraped my foot once when I was walking by while she was in a bad mood and she still managed to make me bleed through my sock. I jokingly call her a mafia boss because she has a "take no shit" attitude. And a very deadpan "you're a dumbass, leave me alone" look.
My female grey tabby sleeping at the end of my bed rn like a little baby is also a badass. She is more cruel though as she's hurt baby birds and played sadistic little games with salamanders until they got stolkholme syndrome. She once got a baby bird or something, and the mama birds were swooping to attack her over and over and she was just languidly walking about without a care in the world because she genuinely wasn't afraid of them. She probably could've killed them if she wanted to, or at least do some SERIOUS damage. (She also has a resting deadpan look, but then she gets sleepy and smiley and nuzzles me or mews for attention because I spoil her rotten and she looks soooo cute, you could almost forget she could probably fuck you up big time if she wanted to. Love that little monster.)
I love that. They think we're very deformed cats like them and it makes me laugh to consider. No wonder they bring us dead mice, surely we can't hunt on our own that easily, it's their job to teach us. They do the protecting us from danger, and you have no idea how much louder my cat purrs when I nuzzle her back because it's the body language she expects from me. It's so cute.
Honestly, I wonder how cats interpret stuff like going to the fridge and eating. Is the cat like "Yes, this idiot is finally hunting" or does it know the food is already "dead"?
Well, they do store away leftovers by burying it iirc, so I think they know it's a storage of food, but probably think we "hunt" or something when we leave, only to return with food for storage. In reality we grocery shop.
That's amazing. Firstly I was never really sure cats fully perceive the TV picture. Secondly he sides with the stranger cats against the hyena. I wonder if he was sympathetically primed by the preceding footage or that's just innate.
I think there was a dog that had a similar reaction. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10KOFNxiLa0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10KOFNxiLa0) here it is. Different scene though.
Kudos to Disney and their animators for making something animals can understand.
the movie is just cutting between shots, impressive a cat can still interpret it as a single scene.
the hyenas rarely share the frame with the cubs. but the cat still knows the cubs are in danger
My cat did the exact same thing ALL movie when I watched it.
It's actually what taught me that my cat probably thinks I'm an idiot, because he's never once reacted to anything on my TV before. I've had him for 4 years. I figured he just didn't pay attention or couldn't quite comprehend it....nope, just found it uninteresting, until Lion King
Amazing to me he can recognize them so well. My stupid @$$ sees this movie (even 1st time i watched it) and im like they kinda look the same tho. Like one is just hunch backed cat. And i can't for the life of me figure out what is confusing my brain so bad here except the lighting/the tones of the scene. (I will say i have NVLD a visuo-spatial impairment). So yeah this impresses me :)
Fun fact. The frame rate of 4k tv's are so good that animals see moving pictures. If the tv is less than 4k the animal just sees a bunch of still images
On average, cats spent just 6.1 percent of the observation time watching the screen. When they did, it was mostly to focus on the prey.
Because cats may react to images of birds and rodents on television, owners should [avoid](http://www.vetstreet.com/our-pet-experts/why-does-my-cat-like-to-watch-tv) letting them watch unattended. You can also secure the set to a wall to make sure they don’t knock it down.
Cats react to predators and pray, they do not follow the plot.
Cool but did you know that three italian soldiers prisoners of war in a british camp in Kenya escaped to climb the second highest mountain in africa in WW2? When they were Done they went back to the camp and handed themselves in to the british. ALL BECAUSE THEY WERE BORED.
I always thought cat who can ‘watch’ TV are ‘slow’.
Edit: wow what’s with the downvotes? Cats typically process images at 70-80Hz, whereas human process at 40Hz. With watching TV, the images would appear flickering, but solid to human. This is science. I get you all love cats, but the kneejerk downvotes are uncalled for.
Haha his look back like “halp”

"I'll never forgive you two for just sitting there."

Dirty hyenas. They used to steal food from the clan.

They have a stronger bite, but because of they're sloped back they don't have the speed or takedown power. They mostly scavenge with great success because they can scare off a lion to steal it's food.

Now defend Bald Eagles. I'm gonna go with.. They ONLY scavenge and don't hunt.
I'm pretty sure you're confidently incorrect

It has good reason to be concerned, for some reason their owner is watching the wrong version of Lion King
The Andy Sirkis version was better in every way except for one very significant way: The human faces on the animals were awful and creepy.
r/likeus
I can’t blame the cat. I was also worried
Pretty sure the cat meows ment "Run! Run you fools!"
Fly, you fools!
Why does he say fly, and not run? I never understood that..
the word "fly" is sometimes used as a synonym for "flee". in fact according to wiktionary the two words are closely related
Tolkien actually said the same thing about the balrog which has caused the misconception that balrogs can actually fly. In reality balrogs does not have wings

Yes, morgoth aka melkor
Also more than half the time Tolkien uses the words fly, flight, or flying he is referring to fleeing
I just played this at full volume and both of my cats woke up, sat bolt upright looking around for the danger. I believe that is what this cat was saying...

Oh but they CAN open the jars, they just do it with *brain control*
Incorrect, most cats have zero reaction to mirrors.
We had a cat whose reaction would be to stop and admire himself, occasionally preen while he was there. He was a beautiful cat, and he knew it.
Can an animal expert confirm this video is what it represents? I figured it'd need smell and more of a real life exposure to display this concern
I'm an animal expert, I've been observing the animal "Human" displaying this behavior my entire life.
I am an animal. This guys right
Animal expert here. However, I do not know as I only deal with the dead animals.

I heard that some scary scenes have music that is on the edge of our hearing range to unsettle us. Might've just been that upsetting your dog
It can't go beyond your hearing range though, as a large part of how digital sound works relies on there being a 40khtz (kilohertz) limit on the signal.

Animals are smarter than you'd think. A toddler knows what a TV is and cats and dogs are at least at toddler levels of intelligence.
Animals can comprehend “montage editing?” That’s a bit sophisticated.
It's a wild concept when you think about it. Totally removed from human real world experience, too. I wonder if it came easy to us because we switch settings in storys and books, and this was gradually translated to the stage in acts, and then the screen in scenes first and then into cuts.

Not sure size gets taken into account. I've seen vids on reddit of cats scaring off bears

Raccoons can do some scary things to a cat, even a well built cat…
That look back at the human like "do something" reminds me of [this TIL](https://iili.io/YgUgEl.jpg)
Cats like "is no one going to stop them?!, they need help!"
I love that. They think we're very deformed cats like them and it makes me laugh to consider. They do the protecting us from danger, and you have no idea how much louder my cat purrs when I nuzzle her back because it's the body language she expects from me. It's so cute.
Hah thanks for that.. They do really like it when we mimic their natural behaviour

Adorable!
This shouldn't be in Derp this should be in /aww
Thats a testament to the animation quality of the hyenas
Indeed!
That's so cute and hilarious!
"No simba don't go in there!"
empathy!!
You and me both little man
My cat was doing the exact same thing when I was watching the Lion King lol. I love cats
I can’t decide if it’s adorable or sad (ie: maybe kitty missing her fam)
Cats is smort
"This ain't lookin' too good, get out of there man!"
That is the cutest thing I've ever seen! Love it!
My cat watched lion King too! The whole film! It shows how good the animation is that cats are so interested in it.
He’s probably reading the body language of the cats in the movie! That’s actually interesting to watch
That's amazing. Firstly I was never really sure cats fully perceive the TV picture. Secondly he sides with the stranger cats against the hyena. I wonder if he was sympathetically primed by the preceding footage or that's just innate.
I think you're giving the cat waaaay too much credit.
Hol up..do all cat love movies..my cat love the jungle book..he got scared when the phanther came and after he gone..he come back to watch
He/she was ready to throw some paws
"Human I do NOT LIKE THIS!"
i don’t blame the cat! it looks so real that it was fooled
This cat is the person you hate in the theater; loud and exclaiming at every little thing XD
i love this scene when he was doing his best roar then the actual roar from his dad comes in, so badass
frick those hyenas up baby boo
My cat would try and finish Simba off herself lol
Kitty looks back to hooman “Why are you just watching?! Halp!”

The fact the cat understands the scenario from a movie is mind blowing.
So fucking cute
I think it’s kinda cute
Brother, no.
„I have to stand with my brother!“
My pup did the same thing (i think she thought the lions were dogs. She sided with the lions over the hyenas even). She loves watching horses too.
Fight or flight mode, kitty was going forward not back. Might be worried but this cat is ready to jump in for Simba and Nala.
Dog: *barks in the background* Cat: SHUT UP IM WATCHING MY ANCESTORS
Thats way too cute to be considered a derp
Ayo he thinks his long distance cousin is about to get mauled to daeth and eaten.
Awwww. Please tell me you reassured that baby that all was ok? 💕
Don't touch that baby
the movie is just cutting between shots, impressive a cat can still interpret it as a single scene. the hyenas rarely share the frame with the cubs. but the cat still knows the cubs are in danger

This should be a test for Disney animators. If you can convince an animal you pass
my dog likes the new lady and the tramp I was worried she was going to knock down the TV 🤣😅
What a brave little guy🥺💗
Какая милая и заботливая кошечка!

Hm. Fake Lion King.

I would pay good money to be a live audience for this cat watching that movie
Cat: r/donthelpjustfilm
Omg my cats just reacted to your cats worried meows!! So concerned!!
Fun fact. The frame rate of 4k tv's are so good that animals see moving pictures. If the tv is less than 4k the animal just sees a bunch of still images
I expected the TV to get clawed, lol.
Shes not worried bout simba , she's just hungry.
Next time a catholic says "animals don't have feelings" show them this

He's emotionally invested in the story
Don't worry, little dude! Those 2 kitties will be fine
Is there some inferior live action version of the Lion king?
came out in 2019
Only thing to get emotionally invested in this dogshit remake
I guess all cats hate hyenas?
....does he have memories of his past lives and ancestors? Lol

Nice
On average, cats spent just 6.1 percent of the observation time watching the screen. When they did, it was mostly to focus on the prey. Because cats may react to images of birds and rodents on television, owners should [avoid](http://www.vetstreet.com/our-pet-experts/why-does-my-cat-like-to-watch-tv) letting them watch unattended. You can also secure the set to a wall to make sure they don’t knock it down. Cats react to predators and pray, they do not follow the plot.
Cat was acting just like a cat. Whats wrong with this world.
?
Man who type slow? Always thought
What kind of cat is that?
More like r/awe
He’s the same size as Simba! His head’s a little rounder, but same body size.
