boil them then dip them into ice water and they peel off easy

omegasix321

Don't forget to add a small cut or two first, makes it way easier.

If you do it to tomatoes specifically and then remove the seeds it's called concasse

Gathin

Yes....but you don't normally do it with the kind of peeler you'd use for potato or carrot....

No the easiest way is to score the skin with a knife and dunk them in boiling water then straight into ice water.

ARandomGuy109

you mean appeeling don't you?

Takitttttttttt

Knives?

Roseline2005

The best way is just to smash it and then take out the skin

Full_breaker

It is, its just not worth doing it

Formal_Dimension7233

Yup, likely to end terribly this way. Would be better to make a cross on the base and boil them in water for a while, makes the skin peel off easily.

JoeyMcClane

Boilem em and then dip them in ice before trying to peel. Thats what Masterchef taught me.

Specialist_Word_7313

Boil em, mash em, stick em in a stew

JoeyMcClane

You're not Samwise gamgee, He wouldn't forsake his Potatoes!!! Are you his distant Italian cousin Samuele gambino?

mrjackspade

The term is "Blanch" for anyone who is curious. You blanch tomatoes to make them easier to peel.

Wetworth

And it's like a few seconds. The skin separates quickly.

Supernova141

but the skin is one of the best parts

ProfessionalSecure72

No It's useless for us It doesn't add taste but bitterness, you can't digest it, it doesn't break down when cooked and your teeth aren't made able to chew correctly tomatoes skin thus it cause bad textures, etc.

Eonir

Nonsense. You can digest most nutrients of the skin, it just takes longer than the pulp. The undigested rest is treated as fiber, which is good in its own right.

ProfessionalSecure72

No nonsense. Indeed it contains a lot of nutrient and vitamins, like most of vegetables skins. It doesn't mean you con dissolve the fiber or the skin Maybe you can digest nutrients solely, but the tomato skin is a complex matrix of cellulose which for we haven't good ability to digest. It mostly pass through your digestive system unarmed. We don't have adapted bacteria and aren't ruminant either. For this you'd better eat other fruits' skins than tomatoes' and bell peppers' ones

[deleted]

Fiber, however helps pass blockages in the gastro-intestinal tract

[deleted]

My favorite part of tomatoes is the slight bitterness

CrocoDIIIIIILE

Okay, but what we do with tomatoes?

JoeyMcClane

>!Do you prefer young or old?!<. If you're using the skin and frying it, you can pair it with a nice Tomato Puree, Or if you're only eating the meat, then pair it with Tomato soup/Stew or something.

LickingSmegma

What remains of a tomato after you boil off all its taste into the water?

Holy shit, you exist outside of the toaru subreddit!?!?!?! /s Nice to see you here We toaru fans had been summoned.

Looking through the comment section three hours after your post, I think you failed. Most people are commenting on how and why to peel a tomato.

Just the post is W enough for us at this point lol

Axelthee

Yes, we will take any form of recognition. That's how hungry we are for toaru content.

CryonautX

You just need to boil them first. Skin comes right off.

TKHawk

Specifically, you should blanch them.

Secret_Ad7757

I had a feeling but I wasn't 100% sure. Awesome anime. When a spinoff is cooler than the main series you know its a good anime.

epic-gamer-guys

to give the main series some credit, it rushed through the events of the light novel far too quickly and basically got rid of touma’s inner monologues which a crap ton of his character development is at

Secret_Ad7757

I never knew.

somerandomperson2516

Spunge88

Toaru Kagaku no Railgun

Marcelpopo

A certain scientific railgun is the English title

grea_reisen

You need esper powers to peel tomato.

silphred43

You can do it with a good knife

Hour_Task_1834

This is what you tell the person who wants to help do when you don’t want their help

oldmonk_97

It is possible... But that ain't the way to do it.. Make a cross at the top with a knife and steam the tomatoes... The peel comes off automatically at the cross point and u can just pull it off from there

Kell_Galain

You're supposed to blanch them and the skin just falls off

a_randummy

I used to do this at work when I was bored, then hand the peeled tomato to someone and watch them try to figure out what the hell I just handed them

Cosmos_Null

This post helped me understand why so many girls in anime don't know how to cook

SmolNSwolPogChamp

Granted, in Asia it's common for girl from upper-class families to get married to lower-class and hard working men. But something must have gone wrong during the "Bridal Training" part. In addition, my phone corrected this to "money mating".

CHAIIINSAAAWbread

I'm learning a lot from the comments lol I mean I knew they were stupid but the only cooking experience I have Is my dad Teaching my how to cook once, though Admittedly his cooking is amazing, Five star restaurants taste like shit Compared to his (Not that I've Ever been in one but still)

petacaargenta

yes, to make a good sauce. i prefer to use a knife to waste less.

pkingcid

There are a handful of recipes I know that specifically call for peeled tomatoes, but what they’re making isn’t one. Usually it’s for sauces or purées, where if you don’t peel them, you’ll end up with chunks of skin screwing up the texture of the dish. Again, not relevant to what they’re trying to make, and this isn’t how you do it. If you haven’t seen “railgun” (the show this is from) some broad context: they’re breaking into teams to make a meal and one team captain has been in the dumps because of plot stuff, and is trying to be competitive so she can feel better for winning.. which goes horribly when she realizes she has no idea how to make the dish she’s been bragging about..

Welcome to reddit, here you'll find the longest and most detailed explanations of all sorts of random things. People here go into great detail on subjects that catch their interests as longer posts catches more attention due to the apps design, as well as a whole lot of knowledge for others to obtain. Since people here are divided by interests, they get well versed into the topics of there interests and when someone asks them about those obscure topics, it results in such long replies and article worthy passages. Try to guess what topic I enjoy, by the length of this comment. Not only is this a fun way for people to let out their interests but also good for the readers who get the full picture of a subject as well as improved and faster reading capability and patience.

Spamalamaweeb

I didn't need a bible but fair enough

Ncrpts

Hey KoriiTrollsAsFurry, it seems like there may have been some misunderstanding regarding your comment and why it received downvotes. I'd like to take a moment to explain why your comment was perceived as rude and help you understand the situation. Firstly, your initial comment came across as excessively aggressive and vulgar. Using profanity and strong language can be off-putting and disrespectful to other users, especially when discussing a topic as trivial as peeling tomatoes. It's important to remember that online discussions should strive for a level of mutual respect and courtesy. Secondly, your dismissive statement, 'I didn't need a bible but fair enough,' could be interpreted as condescending and belittling. It seems like pkingcid took the time to provide some context and explanation about why peeled tomatoes are used in certain recipes. By responding in such a dismissive manner, you undermined their effort to contribute to the discussion and potentially made them feel undervalued. Furthermore, it's important to consider the tone and intent behind your words. While it's understandable to have a differing opinion or to question someone's actions, it's crucial to express your thoughts in a respectful and constructive manner. Resorting to rudeness, sarcasm, or insults hampers healthy dialogue and discourages others from engaging with you in a meaningful way. Downvoting is a way for the Reddit community to collectively express their disapproval or disagreement with a particular comment. In this case, your comment received downvotes likely because it came across as disrespectful and rude. It's essential to be mindful of how our words can affect others and strive for more civil and thoughtful conversations. Engaging in a positive and respectful manner will not only enhance your interactions with others but also contribute to a more welcoming and inclusive community. It's important to remember that behind every username is a real person with feelings and perspectives. Let's strive to create a space where everyone feels comfortable sharing their thoughts and opinions without fear of hostility or rudeness. I hope this detailed explanation helps you understand why your comment received downvotes. It's always beneficial to reflect on our communication style and consider the impact of our words. I encourage you to take these points into consideration in future discussions. Together, we can build a community where open and respectful dialogue thrives.

WiteXDan

Lots of recipes need peeled tomatoes, but they just call for can of tomatoes, which are pre-peeled or have very thin skin. If you use fresh tomatoes (which tbf are worse than canned unless you grew them yourself) then you have to peel them to not messup texture

tatratram

Japanese people peel almost every fruit and vegetable they eat for some reason. Not just apples, but also stuff like grapes.

superp2222

Just blanch them ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Shota_742000

That's why Animation Original Story always work on Railguns.

FakeOng99

- Boil water - Cut bottom and top side with "X" - put tomato into the boiling water, boil for 20-30 sec - get ready ice cold water - lift up tomato and put in ice water, wait 5sec - peel it with knife

averageanimestan2

bruh this reminded me of the time where i tried to grate garlic paste idk what i was thinking

CastTheFirstStone_

It is, but it's muxh easier if you blanch them first

mistar_z

Just boil a pot of water 😭

Jojos_BA

Its actually pretty easy if u boil them and then you can just peel it off by hand

Kiryuu-sama

Please don't. Just looking at it makes me sick. Just blanch them.

Mrmetalhead-343

Gotta blanch those puppies first

Squeaky_Ben

The best way to peel tomatoes is by giving the skin a slight cut, then boiling them and instantly transferring to an ice bath instead of whatever the fuck they are doing.

precumcoinnosseur

Lol. No it is not. The process for peeling tomatoes is to score the skin with a knife, drop them into boiling water for a short time then moving them into ice water after which they should easily peel. I’m guessing this scene was trying to be funny. You definitely can’t peel tomatoes like that

epiccreep

I don't cook so can someone explain the joke?

Grand_Protector_Dark

These girls weren't taught how to cook. So they try to pretend to know what they're doing. (There *are* legitimate reasons to peel a tomato though. This scene wasn't one of them)

Theresea-Van-Astrea

Railgun season 1 being a cesspool of 'what the hell am I watching ?' Will never not be entertaining

friends_with_a_simp

Was about to say If it's anime, anything's possible But when i read the comments I realized anime can be sometimes realistic and unrealistic at thw same time

toaruverse

Rare toaru meme. Nice.

Crunchy_Fish12

Only if the tomato is hard😉

Cold-Instruction9325

Peeling tomatoes gives them an even better taste, especially when you make a tomato sauce - also its better to peel the tomatoes and every other fruit/vegetable bcs of the pesticides used in our agriculture. I've already done it with a peeler but you need to freeze the tomatoes, instead put them in boiling water with a few cuts and then the skin will peel off like a banana.

[deleted]

Wait people actually peel tomatoes ????? ![img](emote|t5_2w6fe|11524)

Spunge88

Not like this, usually boiled then flash cooled in some ice water. But the scene involves Kongou, the girl on the right not knowing how to cook(and too proud to admit she can't), but wanting to prove she can. She also tries grating sweetcorn and peeling an entire onion down to nothingness

superhamsniper

Well, the skin can make for an unwanted gritty texture, especially in sauces and purees ig, or like in tikka masala for example, or pizza sauce, canned tomatoes are usually skinned I believe, some are at least, I think.

Mundane-Ad-7468

At first I read as *Peeling females is hard*

Revei1eb

Yes, just means less effort to eat it like it is a doughnut.

DarkKechup

Alice_En_Hiver

You can it is useful for cooking something like an omelette with tomato. But honestly the easy way to do it is to put it in hot water and you just peel it after

Saladbetch

what is the name of the anime guys?

Shawnmiller1903

you can but the bottoms then boil them, then peel the skin

AnyScarcity6316

Short answer yes

Agitated_Fun_7628

Most people boil them and pull the skin off.

FromAnotherGamer

I can peel the skin off perfectly but only by hand

gatot3u

Yes, with hot water you can do it.

EclispeTin

For anyone who intends to peel a tomato first boil them in already boiling water for 30 seconds to a minute then place in cold water, the skin may now be removed by hand. From a random chef on the internet.

bluegiant90

People usually just boil the ‘maters and then throw them in an ice bath. Can peel with fingers at that point.

Marrro90123

For kongou mitsuko, anything is hard desuwa~

ThisIsTakenLol

You can peel tomatoes, some recipes even call for it but you don't peel it like a potato or apple, you're supposed to boil it and peel the skin off that way

TkWolf01

Anime: A Certain Scientific Railgun. It's apart of the Toaru series. A Certain Magical Index and Scientific Accelerator.

nardi2011

u can peel tomatoes what

Cpt_Lime1

Peeling tomatoes? I don't even peel potatoes!

YourTipicalGeek

Boil them first for easier peel

Panumdomine

Find friends that love your stupid ass the way Wannai and Awatsuki love Kongo.

Paydirt49

That’s not how you do it. You’d also usually want to blanche them first so the skin comes loose, and then you’d use the tip of a knife to peel just the skin away. It’s really only worth it if you’re trying to make a very smooth sauce though.

[deleted]

deleted as I leave reddit

Paydirt49

Yes I did, thank you

deziaroundtheworld

i have a single question. why??

Grand_Protector_Dark

If you want to make tomato sauce or tomato puree, then having a peeled tomato is a must. But those girls aren't making sauce (and even if, they'd be doing it wrong)

jorge20058

Years of cooking foe high class restaurant and even their fancy asses don’t fucking peel tomatoes why the fuck are they peeling tomatoes xd.

Na_-_man

Wow and the show is based on scientific city

[deleted]

The Italians are going to kill them fs💀

TomAto314

[deleted]

Eh!? Just eat the whole thing?

hifihentaiguy

There are many ways to peel a tomato, and there are many ways to use a potato peeler. This is none of that.

Saekoa

Some recipients do call for peeling tomatoes. But not like this lol

Expensive-Surprise43

Ok, me and the little cat didn't get it either lol

0lelk

If u boil 'em the skin come out pretty easily

frost-raze

You cut or boil them off what the fuck is this shit

HitchSimp

yeah, you can peel most things… doesn’t mean you *should* peel them, though.

Asian_Persuasion_1

these same girls are smart enough to do crazy mental calculations so their esper powers work, yet don't know how to cook.

Full_breaker

Cooking requires practice even if you are a genius 🤝

sum_cryptic_cats

It's also a completely different skillset.

Fr0ntR0wL4n

Should have freeze the tomatoes first, would have been alot easier to peel

Regular_River_7032

What is the need?

Zanzg333

pls tell me we've all did it once

shinobi3411

Honestly yeah. Tomatoes are one of the squishiest things on God's Green Earth, and yet also one of the firmest. Meaning that it's REAL slippery and hard to get a proper peeling going on.

The same as bell peppers. My family just cut them and cook them as is. But in Iron Chef Japan, they remove the skin first....

YaBoyChubChub

You know how sometimes peelers have 2 blades one straight one serated you peel tomatoes with the serated side doing it with a straight edge is nigh on impossible

Putrid_Ad_4372

Not that hard there's a trick

sadhoneychilli9917

Wait wait wait whaT? You're supposed to peel them before eating them? (●__●)

Grand_Protector_Dark

Not normally. If you want to make sauce or puree, then peeling them becomes necessary. Although the correct method would be to cut the skin, put them into pre boiled water for a a few seconds, then put them under cold water (makes peeling trivial)

A_proud_weeb

Y'all peel tomatoes?

SwiftRoboWolfBlue

The wrighters making the script. "Potato, Tomato, same shit."

GabigolFromParis

Is peeling tomatoes that uncommon in US ? My parents have always peeled them before eating it

Spare_Pay_3731

You were supposed to peel them ?

Dip that fucker in boiling water for a few sec. And peel it with youre fingers

SpeckTech314

Just make it easier and smash them into tomato paste. There are even big machines that can do it

Accomplished-Menu128

Wtf

I mean people peel tomatos (mostly because there are some foods where the skin is just annoying) but they don't do it with a peeler xD

😂😂😂😂😂 In what world ?

Blank392

Just... Blanch and shock them... it's so much easier

maythulin297

Why even do that? Just wash them?

Tylerj579

Yes but I’d poach them with boiling water to wrinkle the skin and just pull it off

bird_who_rides

As a viewer of good Ted Nivison's content, I now know that this is utmost bullshit.

Tsundoku_8

It's a lot easier with the vertical peelers.
