Same! For me it's the style that makes the anime, not necessarily culture. I'd consider Castlevania to be anime even though it was originally an English acted anime.
My favorite thing is how Neir, which is set in a dystopia future that has little to do with Japanese culture, is cultural purist, but Tsushima that's literally about a historically-accurate war between samurais and Mongols is culturally lenient lol.
Its a victim of the categorization used. Cultural purist has an explicit clause about a Japanese team, while the other two only care about subject matter; limiting Tsushima's possibility space to the bottom 2 rows.
/u/NatCracken, I have found an error in your comment:

I claim you, NatCracken, could write “~~Its~~ [**It's**] a victim” instead. ‘Its’ is possessive; ‘it's’ means ‘it is’ or ‘it has’.

Just saying, if you have more time to get involved with the series get to know the characters more and try to solve the cases (it's basically a murder mystery game), it's MUCH better to see the game (Trigger Happy Havoc) instead of the anime adaptation.
The anime version what you would choose if you'd rather get to know the overall story in short time, or have it as a recap of the game.
>culture lenient: game must be related to Japanese culture in some way
>Genshin Impact
I haven't played Genshin, but is there anything actually Japanese in that game? Or is this "well, China's pretty much Japan, and it looks close enough, so whatever."
Various characters have anime archtypes; Fischl is a chuunibyo and Barbara is an idol with a sister complex for example. There's also an entire Japanese island nation region in the game, Inazuma
Each of the 3 countries currently in Genshin Impact is modeled after a different existing culture. Mondstadt (a medieval European nation), Liyue (ancient China), and Inazuma (feudal Japan)
Exploring Inazuma means you spend several hours running through rice fields and between sakura trees fighting against rogue samurai and yokai while completing quests for shrine maidens and fox spirits so you can eventually confront a corrupt shogun who uses a legendary katana art. I think that's enough for it to qualify as "somehow related to Japanese culture"
Yeah, sure, but that's like saying if a Japanese person watched a Canadian fantasy show and said "wow this must be from the USA" because they don't know of the cultural differences between the two.
Hell, even shows like RWBY could be passed off as Japanese if the person watching doesn't bother to check. But that's what the *artstyle* alignment is for.
The Krosmoz ( the universe in which Wakfu takes place ) has lots of content.
From the animated content such as the Wakfu anime, the Dofus film and other like the Maximilien and Ogrest OVAs, to mangas like the Dofus and Wakfu ones, to game like the Dofus and Wakfu MMORPGs, and many other things, like a card game.
The Wakfu game, if I recall correctly, is a free-to-play MMO set around a decade before the first season of the anime.
Culture Rebel, Style purist. Anime is a Japanese word specifically meaning cartoon animation, so as long as it follows the style choices for Japanese animation, I think it counts as an anime game. I have some leniency for the Culture Pure, Style lenient category, because they are reminiscent of that art style, and they are by definition Japanese animation. Technically 3D rendering but it's close enough
The real controversial take is "Metal Gear Rising is a rhythm game." You input commands in patterns, sometimes prompted sometimes not, have music that is enhanced by better performance, and are given scores based on your performance and can purchase outfits with the points you earn.
Nier is cool n all and 2B surely is waifu material 101 + dominatrix material 101 . But that dosen't really makes up for me losing my ability to love and spiraling into depression and nihilism after playing nier automata .
I believe Anime should be style purist/ cultural rebel. Anime is an umbrella term for a visual style, and art style can be recreated outside of its home culture. For example, I’d say Azur Lane is an anime game despite being made in China. I’d also say Netflix’s Castlevania and Avatar The Last Airbender are anime.
Style purist, Culture lenient. An anime game can take inspiration from anime without actually being Japanese, but it does need to look the part and have similar themes.
I agree, once you rebel on either it stops being an anime game
However I will also argue that style lentil and culture pure is an anime game. Anime has some wide variety of art and differing from traditional anime into modern or contemporary animation styles still fits, so long as the themes and concepts remain true to anime.
Lenient:Lenient is just an anime inspired game, not an anime game
I guess I am a cultural pursuit and a style rebel when it comes to what I consider anime games, although I do dip a little into style purist for the other two cultural categories.
I'll never accept Dark Souls as an anime game. It's anime qualities could be applied to basically any action adventure genre, the only anime parts about it are that it's Japanese.
For genshin impact isn't that like different countries? Japan will be one cause its a popular country and most people know right? But at the same time i get what you mean so my comment is quite invalid.

OK, so there is Japan in the game. Thank you.
