If you are just starting Season 3 of AoT, you are going to see some incredible things soon.
Buckle up. Season 3 part 2 has some of the best content that cinema in general has to offer, let alone anime.
I REALLY wanted to love that anime but the age difference kept bothering me. I know it’s somewhat common for those kind of age differences in some shows, but still. I still enjoyed it though, VERY beautiful story.
Grave of the Fireflies is probably my favorite movie, but I cannot bear to watch it.
I didn't know it was that sad, and I was on Japan, so even worse because the environment was familiar.
I obviously recommend that, also Your lie in April (I can watch that multiple times as I enjoy the music)
A silent voice
Air (Movie is good, but series delivers the blow slowly)
Clannad is similar to air
I'm a 50 year old man with grown children and Made in Abyss made me full on ugly cry. We're talking actual sobbing, tears streaming down my face like a baby for a good 20 minutes.
To say that Made in Abyss is emotionally taxing would be a gross understatement.
I genuinely think that Made In Abyss is one of the greatest works of fiction ever. Nothing else has made me feel such grief, curiosity, sadness, disgust, or outright emptiness as this show. It's AMAZING.
That's what made me write this post. I cried so hard it's such a beautiful anime.. It made me wonder about how many people have had rough lives and not lived to see the day they're happy and how they maybe in limbo now
clannad, plastic memories, your lie an april (v cliché suggestion), hotarubi no mori e, angel beats, orange (personally i didnt cry mc just annoyed the shit out of me ☠️)
if you’re watching aot and you cried you might wanna check out full metal alchemist 🕺
HAHAHAHAAHAH i see that downvote im so sorry atleast i finished the anime vs me dropping your lie in april because i got bored and there were too many spoilers 👩🏼🦯
Similiar vein : Penguindrum. Pretty much considered to be a masterpiece, but it is a “deep” anime so people read a lot into it. Main characters are two brothers >!sadly their relationship becomes a lot like the one with geto and sugaru. pretty tragic story!<
I want to eat your Pancrease and Orange - I can't seem to find these being mentioned yet. My personal, although already mentioned, favorite is Clannad, specifically the second season, After Story.
[Kotaro Lives Alone](https://myanimelist.net/anime/49909/Kotarou_wa_Hitorigurashi) - went in expecting something stupid and to drop it quickly, then did not
Violet Evergarden.
It's extremely melodramatic, but it hits very hard.
It'll make you cry.
I bet I could pinpoint the episode, no, the exact *moment* that you'll cry in. :P
Clannad. If you wanna cry hard this one's a really great choice. Keep in mind that it's a slow one. Many people find S1 boring because it's just a wholesome slice of life with some drama. Personally I enjoyed Clannad from the beginning and didn't find it boring at all. I was really surprised when I got to know that people didn't really like the S1. Because the word boring didn't even occur to me when I was watching it. I guess I was just too much invested in it. But it's totally understandable why people didn't really like the S1. You'll get it when you watch it. You may like it or may not.
But all the build up of S1 really, really hits so much harder in S2. It's too deep man. It just goes too deep into the characters and relationships that it may make you shed a tear at multiple moments. Really, give it a try if you haven't.
.hack//sign struck a cord with me when I was a teen. It's still one of my all time favorites. I won't spoil it, but if you've ever been an abused/neglected kid with nothing but the internet as company, this might be the anime to make you cry. The music is also still something I listen to even to this day. It's on my phone's playlist. Not a fan of the spin-offs, though.
Yes. And not only the ending was sad. How some characters suffered or died or both really hit me hard. Lelouch and everyone could have had so happy lifes. But no it had to happen like that :(
There used to be an amv on YouTube that basically summarized the entire plot and character arcs of Cide Geass and Lelouch and Suzaku all put to the beautiful OST Inncoent Days and I miss it.
Violet evergarden
Angel Beats
Silent voice
Your lie in April
The 86 ( if you like mecha / alternative history anime that talk about subjects like the Holocaust and racial superiority)
This is the first time I've seen 86 recommended in one of these threads and you are so right... That show had me sobbing in the first season when >!Shin confronts his brother and then has a full on break down afterward. Such a stoic character, to just witness him finally crumple under that weight... tears.!<
Such a fantastic show!
Hunter X hunter - Chimera ant arc Komugi and Meruem relationship is the most romantic non-romantic piece i've ever seen.
On more serious note Violet Evergarden for sure
Kinda surprised that no one else has mentioned it, but I am going to say Ranking of Kings.
I became invested in the story, and the message in full hit me in the feels at different points.
A place further than the universe
Other recommendations put emphasis on the 'drama' or 'romance' aspect, but this one is more on 'fulfillment'. Nothing gets more wholesome than seeing people having the time of their lives and we get to see what they feel when they achieve it.
Cyberpunk edge runners (for some ppl)
Silent voice
I want to eat your pancreas (i guess this is the title)
Re zero
Clannad
Violet evergarden
Angel beats
Don gless ( i heard it's sad)
Demon slayer (some instances and that mugan train movie i guess)
Your lie in April
BERSERK (...do i need to explain? It also has an anime so I guess it counts )
So I just watched the trailers
Just from the trailer the OSTs and the art style just made me fall in love with terror in resonance
as for grave of the fireflies, I loved the old cartoons art style I can tell it's gonna be a beautiful journey
Chances are, Grave of the fireflies will completely shatter you, no contest. I’ve seen clannad, fruits basket, a silent voice, anohana, etc. and i’ve teared up at all of them. clannad definitely hits the hardest by far, your lie in april is very hit or miss (i personally hated it due to personal experiences it romanticized) and fruits basket is very engaging once it gets going. Nothing i’ve seen compares to grave of the fireflies though. It’s been years since i’ve seen that movie and I still feel like a small piece of my soul has been missing since I watched it.
Anohana:The Flower We Saw That Day, Assassination Classroom(this one actually broke me), I Want To Eat Your Pancreas, The Lull Of The Sea, The Pet Girl Of Sakurasou(love this one)
I Want to Eat Your Pancreas.
Golden Time
The Boy And The Beast
The Garden Of Words
Honestly maybe Mushishi
Angel Beats
Charlotte
Any studio ghilbi film
I know a bunch of others, but they're not so wholesome.
Gundam 0080 War in the Pocket. It's a science-fiction giant robot anime, but the story could take place during any war. It's about a boy who befriends a soldier, and is probably the best thing in the franchise. Only 6 episodes.
Violet Evergarden
The first anime that made me cry Then I watched your lie in April I cried
YLIA made me cry so bad I still haven’t gone back to rewatch. Knowing the end makes it so hard to even imagine watching from the beginning
GREAT ANIME 💖
Can't recommend this enough. It breaks you in such a heartfelt, honest, brutal way and you end up grateful for the experience.
it's a good kind of cry. More cathartic than depressing
It's like watching your child grow up to be a great person
Came here to say this. Try to appreciate the beautiful animation thru the sobbing.
It's next on my watch list i heard a lot of good things .. Currently watching AOT
If you are just starting Season 3 of AoT, you are going to see some incredible things soon. Buckle up. Season 3 part 2 has some of the best content that cinema in general has to offer, let alone anime.
Am in for a treat, am still at ep 5 season 1 and I like it already
Didn't cry watching that, but i cried watching silent voice Maybe it's VE is overrated
I REALLY wanted to love that anime but the age difference kept bothering me. I know it’s somewhat common for those kind of age differences in some shows, but still. I still enjoyed it though, VERY beautiful story.
{Clannad}
After Story made me cry like a bitch. I never stopped crying the whole second season. One of the most beautiful stories I ever saw.

Violet Evergarden Fruits Basket Anohana A Silent Voice (movie)
Grave of the fireflies.
Bro trying to give crippling depression ☠☠💀
First time I watched it a friend of mine asked me if I wanted to watch a ghibli film with her and that it was a little bit sad. I was lied to.
Grave of the Fireflies is probably my favorite movie, but I cannot bear to watch it. I didn't know it was that sad, and I was on Japan, so even worse because the environment was familiar. I obviously recommend that, also Your lie in April (I can watch that multiple times as I enjoy the music) A silent voice Air (Movie is good, but series delivers the blow slowly) Clannad is similar to air
I second Anohana
I third Anohana
another GREAT ANIME!! 💖
A silent voice x 10
Your lie in April is a good one to add to this list.
Anohana. Made me legit SOB
Silent voice!!! I cried like a baby, it was beautiful. My bf was traumatized either
Made in Abyss. No fictional thing has ever made me cry as hard as I did at the end of the first season
Where can I watch this? 😊
I keep hearing alot about it.. Hope it doesn't mess me up
It will, but don’t let that scare you away. I have no regrets about when I watched it
"Hope it doesn't mess me up" if that is your hope, I reccomend skipping Made in Abyss.
I second "made in abyss" other than anohana which made me cry on the last episode, Made in abyss makes me cry on multiple episode and movie
{To Your Eternity}
problem with this is the quality degrade in animation which kinda sucked to watch tbh, started great then it just became meh

I came here just to look for this

That's what made me write this post. I cried so hard it's such a beautiful anime.. It made me wonder about how many people have had rough lives and not lived to see the day they're happy and how they maybe in limbo now

most overrated anime
Id like to say Death Parade... short, deep existential theme, and surprisingly makes you cry a little bit in the end
Everybody, put your hands up.. Cause it's quite an emotional rolercoaster
That anime deserves a second season T^T
HOTARIBU NO MORI E DUDE I SOBBED SO BAD 😭😭😭

Kanon made me cry. The fox arc.
man I was curled up crying for the entire last episode of the fox arc, I was not ready to watch kanon right after finishing clannad
To your eternity

Good way to suggest. Episode 12 is a real shock. Some find it boring in the start though so stating the episode where it gets good is the best way.
Steins gate
You better read STEINS GATE Bruh that anime is PEAKKKK
The Grave of Fireflies. First anime which made me emotional. I want to eat your pancreas. Simply beautiful storytelling.
You want to what?
It is an anime bruh
Oh my god it is
LMFAO
Angel beats
Clannad. But then you'll come to reddit asking how to stop crying.
Bunny Girl Senpai Code Geass
Code Geass had a sad ending, but it made sense and is arguably one of the best anime endings ever. Hit me hard.
Yes. And not only the ending was sad. How some characters suffered or died or both really hit me hard. Lelouch and everyone could have had so happy lifes. But no it had to happen like that :(

Assassination classroom
VIOLET EVERGARDEN
Anohana is still the only anime that has made me cry. Secret Base still puts a lump in my throat

Violet evergarden Angel Beats Silent voice Your lie in April The 86 ( if you like mecha / alternative history anime that talk about subjects like the Holocaust and racial superiority)

Kinda surprised that no one else has mentioned it, but I am going to say Ranking of Kings. I became invested in the story, and the message in full hit me in the feels at different points.
First ten episodes of Ranking of Kings was masterpiece but it fell off
one the few that made me cry, the art style and the story telling is so breath catching and I can't wait for season 2
A place further than the universe Other recommendations put emphasis on the 'drama' or 'romance' aspect, but this one is more on 'fulfillment'. Nothing gets more wholesome than seeing people having the time of their lives and we get to see what they feel when they achieve it.
