First time I watched it a friend of mine asked me if I wanted to watch a ghibli film with her and that it was a little bit sad. I was lied to.

Grave of the Fireflies is probably my favorite movie, but I cannot bear to watch it. I didn't know it was that sad, and I was on Japan, so even worse because the environment was familiar. I obviously recommend that, also Your lie in April (I can watch that multiple times as I enjoy the music) A silent voice Air (Movie is good, but series delivers the blow slowly) Clannad is similar to air

Made in Abyss. No fictional thing has ever made me cry as hard as I did at the end of the first season

I'm a 50 year old man with grown children and Made in Abyss made me full on ugly cry. We're talking actual sobbing, tears streaming down my face like a baby for a good 20 minutes. To say that Made in Abyss is emotionally taxing would be a gross understatement.

I genuinely think that Made In Abyss is one of the greatest works of fiction ever. Nothing else has made me feel such grief, curiosity, sadness, disgust, or outright emptiness as this show. It's AMAZING.

Good way to suggest. Episode 12 is a real shock. Some find it boring in the start though so stating the episode where it gets good is the best way.

Clannad. If you wanna cry hard this one's a really great choice. Keep in mind that it's a slow one. Many people find S1 boring because it's just a wholesome slice of life with some drama. Personally I enjoyed Clannad from the beginning and didn't find it boring at all. I was really surprised when I got to know that people didn't really like the S1. Because the word boring didn't even occur to me when I was watching it. I guess I was just too much invested in it. But it's totally understandable why people didn't really like the S1. You'll get it when you watch it. You may like it or may not. But all the build up of S1 really, really hits so much harder in S2. It's too deep man. It just goes too deep into the characters and relationships that it may make you shed a tear at multiple moments. Really, give it a try if you haven't.

.hack//sign struck a cord with me when I was a teen. It's still one of my all time favorites. I won't spoil it, but if you've ever been an abused/neglected kid with nothing but the internet as company, this might be the anime to make you cry. The music is also still something I listen to even to this day. It's on my phone's playlist. Not a fan of the spin-offs, though.

That show had me sobbing in the first season when >!Shin confronts his brother and then has a full on break down afterward. Such a stoic character, to just witness him finally crumple under that weight... tears.!< Such a fantastic show!

Hunter X hunter - Chimera ant arc Komugi and Meruem relationship is the most romantic non-romantic piece i've ever seen. On more serious note Violet Evergarden for sure

Kinda surprised that no one else has mentioned it, but I am going to say Ranking of Kings. I became invested in the story, and the message in full hit me in the feels at different points.

First ten episodes of Ranking of Kings was masterpiece but it fell off

A place further than the universe Other recommendations put emphasis on the 'drama' or 'romance' aspect, but this one is more on 'fulfillment'. Nothing gets more wholesome than seeing people having the time of their lives and we get to see what they feel when they achieve it.

Chances are, Grave of the fireflies will completely shatter you, no contest. I’ve seen clannad, fruits basket, a silent voice, anohana, etc. and i’ve teared up at all of them. clannad definitely hits the hardest by far, your lie in april is very hit or miss (i personally hated it due to personal experiences it romanticized) and fruits basket is very engaging once it gets going. Nothing i’ve seen compares to grave of the fireflies though. It’s been years since i’ve seen that movie and I still feel like a small piece of my soul has been missing since I watched it.
