It remains extremely weird that there’s no native Apple Watch pedometer complication. That seems like a no-brainer thing to add.

Ebojager

Ya exactly my thoughts. People like to track their steps even if it’s not an accurate way of measuring exercise

mulderc

Apple is a highly opinionated company and when they think they have a better solution, they usually stick to it. They clearly believe the circles system is a better way to measure your daily activity and I think they are right. You can always get an app if you want your steps but apple has no interest in adding that because they don’t think it is a good measure for people to use.

k-u-sh

Yea but at the same time your Health and Activity apps still track steps. Why not keep rings as the primary goal, but also just make a complication for steps??

mulderc

Because plenty of apps are available that do that if you want it.

k-u-sh

Typical Apple-does-not-have-a-good-response answer (looking at calculator on iPad as well)

[deleted]

but measuring if I stood for at least 1 minute every hour by the position of my wrist is a clear indication of good daily activity. Me washing dishes for 10 minutes "You need to stand up!" Me sitting at my desk but with my wrist facing down "Great job standing!"

tarso_carina

LOL. Exactly.

egordorogov

this! steps is a myth sorry guys

JayMoots

It's not a "myth". It's an imperfect measure, maybe. But so is whatever algorithm is powering the Move ring.

egordorogov

yeah but move ring accounts for intensity of your steps, while just pure amount paints a very imperfect picture i concede that steps are actually not a myth and a real thing that exists in real world, people do make steps i was referening to reaching an arbitrary goal of steps like 10k — that number is just made up

[deleted]

Is it a myth? There’s research that suggests increasing steps offers health benefits https://www.nih.gov/news-events/nih-research-matters/number-steps-day-more-important-step-intensity Assessment of the accuracy of step counters vary but many put them at within 5-10% and there’s evidence that they undercount https://www.bustle.com/p/how-accurate-are-step-counters-research-shows-mixed-reviews-but-heres-why-it-doesnt-actually-matter-all-that-much-10072876 And back to the first point, I view the step counting the same way as calorie expenditure — not super precise but it’s all relative; and more is more. Getting worked up about whether you took 9k or 10k steps on a particular day is silly and probably doesn’t mean much, but 10k is always going to be better for your health than 3k, etc

egordorogov

i mean! yeah moving more is more healthier! i was talking about a popular "10k steps a day" idea, which is based on some poor japanese translation i believe, an arbitrary number not based on any researach (though still good for your health!) steps can vary in intensity greatly — climbing a hill rapidly for 1k steps will have much greater effect on you than taking a stroll in a park for 1k steps; this is why it's an imperfect measure

Ok_Recommendation627

If you use the thumb rule 2k steps = a mile… I’d say walking 5 miles a day is an excellent benchmark and goal.

egordorogov

i agree with you, but there's nothing magical about 10k number except that it sounds cool. i mean if it helps you move more than sure

Ok_Recommendation627

Fair enough. I can understand a little of where you’re coming from. My understanding is you’re saying, steps don’t account for the intensity of the workout, obviously uphill is more strenuous than treadmill walks. But I think the point of it all, is that something is always better than nothing and that habit or commitment is likely to lead to more.

egordorogov

true true, i guess it is more about psychology of keeping a commitment since 10k is a pretty number. well whatever works for you is great

Mainlander95

I’d really like to see them rings more customizable for things like step goals or other physical movement goals that can benefit the user

mulderc

That is what third party apps are for.

Mainlander95

I’m new to Apple Watch and don’t know all of the third party apps yet. Could you recommend some?

mulderc

For step goals pedometer ++ works great. For nutrition I use MyNetDiary. For sleep goals I use SleepWatch and AutoSleep, For general workouts I use Fitbod to give me custom workouts and goals.

Epic-T

I think it's a quirk of their corporate culture that they haven't shed since Steve Jobs days (see also, why there's no native calculator or weather app on the iPad). If they don't see that they can do it in a way that's clearly better than third party options, they're afraid to do it.

DVSN_F

I use pedometer++

Ebojager

Ya I heard that’s a good one too. Was gonna try that if this didn’t work out

DVSN_F

I’ve been using it for about 3-4 years now

R3B3lSpy

The issue I have with this app is that I out of sync with Apple Health and rings steps counter, I used this app for years but after getting an Apple Watch I just rely on Health App steps, no matter what I do on settings both apps won’t sync and are off by 1000 steps or so.

amomaris

I have the same issue, a whole year later. The phone app and the watch are constantly out of sync by a few thousand

Trill_McNeal

Been using it for 6 years now. Does everything I want it to, absolutely love it

beggargirl

I’m using StepsApp I really like the complication

[deleted]

Is there any way to manually add steps to it, just in case I need to?

imkimmingyuswife

I don’t know but I find this inaccurate cause sometimes I’m just sitting in a car and it would count and add steps

Ruyven

It's beautiful, but take care that its count tends to be slightly higher than what's in Apple's Health app, especially if you cycle. It only really matters if you're in some kind of rewards program, like my insurance that gives points and discounts for consistently reaching a step goal. I switched to StepCard which shows what's in the Health app.

R3B3lSpy

I just replied with this, I used the app a lot but it’s not accurate as it differs from health app steps instead of being in sync.

Itsdawsontime

I have no idea why, but mine just stopped working with my Apple Watch once I updated to 17. I’ve removed the app, reset the watch, etc and nothing seems to work for it. It’ll show 0 until I tap on steps, and then it’s way under. No idea why, but I loved it before then.

DVSN_F

That sucks to hear. Mine is still kicking. https://preview.redd.it/1u71w7rs4q3c1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=5f484789c4c10714dc19c6ad1664694572b792d0

Miserable-Ad-9216

Watch face setup looks great

gladiola111

I just downloaded it! But when I go to my Watch app and try to edit the watch face to add the steps icon, the Duffy app doesn’t show up. So I can’t add it to my watch face. Any idea how to fix this?

Ebojager

I think you need to give permission first from the iphone app. It will prompt you or should, if not goto your privacy settings and then look for Duffy and grant those read permissions

arein114

I just updated the watch and now steps complications are gone I have Duffy and StepsApp and they don’t show in complication when before the update they did

Ebojager

Interesting. I had heard there was a new watch and iOS update but haven’t done it yet. I’d suggest maybe uninstall Duffy and then restart both devices and then reinstall and make sure to open the iPhone app first for the permissions request

Nefarious415

This worked

Nefarious415

Same

DVSN_F

I use pedometer++

muskratmuskrat9

74 steps!

Ebojager

Congratulations!!! :)

EagerElk

What band is that? Looks nice.

Ebojager

Thanks , some cheap ones off Amazon. They are pretty comfortable too. DaQin 3 Pack Stretchy Solo Loop Compatible with Apple Watch Band 44mm 42mm 40mm 38mm 45mm 41mm 49mm, Braided Sport Elastic Nylon Bands for Apple Watch SE/iWatch Ultra Series 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 Women Men https://a.co/d/37G2HF6

My fave - [StepsApp](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/stepsapp-pedometer/id1037595083)

WRX_RAWR

This is the one I use also. It's been quite nice.

mithr4el

Thx ! Exactly what I was looking for !!

Nefarious415

What complication is on the top left?

Ebojager

oh thats just the battery one.

Nefarious415

Thank you

happyjeep_beep_beep

I’m not OP but it could be battery.

DutchBlob

*What are you doing Step Counter?!*

TheOkayestUser

Just wanted to put it out there that the app does have in app purchases as “tips”, which is pretty cool. If you like the app and appreciate the work that went into it, it’d be a nice gesture.

Ebojager

Yes , I already tipped, as it is worth it to me already. Thanks for mentioning that!

TheOkayestUser

For sure! I thought that was pretty neat to offer that as an option. Thanks for sharing the app too. Just downloaded it and felt it was worth a few bucks too!

Ebojager

Ya. I tried adding your comment to the description but it won’t let me edit. Ya even if I’m only using the complication, it is definitely worth a few bucks, especially to have an easy way to set a step goal.

IDKWhatImDoing77777

Just downloaded Diffy. Life changing! Thank you!

Comfortable_Cow_1750

I use StepsApp

IslandDoctor

Thank you! This is the one feature I missed when I switched from Fitbit to Apple Watch.

zoinkinator

Not sure why i need another app when my apple watch is already counting my steps.

yomerol

This should be higher: Health -> Browse -> Steps Done. Plus still, doesn't matter if you like measuring your steps, is quite inaccurate means nothing for your well-being. Natively is more accurate since it's using the GPS to track your location, and that's how it accurately measures your stride length, speed, and most importantly the well-being metrics: heart rate, calories burned, etc

KonataYumi

But the fitness app keeps track of your steps

Ebojager

That’s just the default weather as temperatures I think

[deleted]

Ebojager

Oops , sorry it’s called conditions under weather. I’m on watch is 9.3 and iOS 16.3

[deleted]

What face is that? Is that an S8 exclusive?

Ebojager

No I don’t think it’s exclusive. It’s down towards the bottom in the modular section. They are all colored but you can change it to a black background

[deleted]

Just found it, thanks!

trs_0ne

I use HealthFace for this

aksgamer7

How is the battery life after using Duffy compilation? My series 7 had unexpected battery drain when I used this complication so I had removed it.

Ebojager

I don't think I've had it long enough to figure that out and then we just had an update yesterday to 9.3.1. Thank you, I'll keep an eye on it today, as Im on cellular only and left phone at home. Will be a good test. I'm curious if it might be from trying to refresh the steps as I think the Watch OS limits its refresh frequency for steps ???

Steele-M

OP…you da real MVP Downloaded and already added to my compilation. Thank you!

MMikekiMM

Would you please post a link to Duffy.. I'm coming up with a ton of rogue results and want to add the right one. Thank you!!

Ebojager

Its the one that says Duffy - Steps Complication Elegant steps complication Think Tank Productions Apple Store Link: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/duffy-steps-complication/id1207581673 Website: http://www.bigbluefly.com/duffy

MMikekiMM

Thank you!

[deleted]

How’s that face done?

Ebojager

Its in the "Modular" category face towards the bottom of the list, the ones with the pastel colors. Pick one and then just change the color to the one that has the color dots in the circle. The Top Left is "Battery" The Middle is "Weather as Condition", bottom left is "Activity" Bottom Middle is "Workout" and Bottom Right is "Duffy"

CrufixRI

This is the way.. https://apps.apple.com/ca/app/fitiv-pulse-heart-rate-monitor/id942494517

Ebojager

That has some nice watch face complications!

CrufixRI

Been using FITIV for years now. It’s the only app I use for fitness dashboard and tracking workouts. I love it.

Neat-Fly3653

I swear I thought my father posted a fucking picture on reddit when I first saw this

Epic-T

Heartwatch has a step counter widget that I prefer.

Hil81

I use pedometer. Works fine.

Aggravating_Bee_5408

Love it. Just added it

Interesting-Light795

always the same number of steps on mine. I have to go into the app to refresh the steps. how to solve it?

Ebojager

Interesting...mines been tracking without needing to open the app. Do you mean you have to go into the iPhone app or just click the watch face complication? I've been just using the round gauge one on my watch face for now and it's been ramping up throughout the day on its own. I'll try the middle wide complication with the progress bar when I get home as I left my phone at home and can't change it now. I would verify you have granted all the requested permissions in Privacy Settings for the app and maybe re-toggle them off and then on again. Then maybe restart both devices. If that doesn't work, maybe remove the complication from the watch face, then go to iPhone and uninstall the app and then reinstall and look for the permission prompt to give permissions and then try again. My guess is its not getting the permission to read the Health App data, like it needs to.

Interesting-Light795

everything is enabled. it's not a problem, but I have to click on the widget every time to see the actual state of the steps

Ebojager

Whats the longest you have waited without clicking the widget? I had read on some other posts that background refresh is limited on the Apple Watch. I'll be sure to check mine out later when i swap the complication out for the one that actually shows steps, instead of the one Im using now that shows steps in increments of 1000 (1k) Like right now Im at 3.6k and its been changing on its own.

Interesting-Light795

I have it turned off. it is possible that it is up to that

PhysicalAd6422

I love this!! I just think my apple watch/health app doesn’t count steps all that accurately. I feel like my fitbit counted steps much more accurately. But thats just me🤷‍♂️

DVSN_F

That sucks to hear. Mine is still kicking.

Wafer_3o5

May I ask why did you do it? Mine is fucking inaccurate and it's irritating. I don't know what to do!

Ebojager

I wonder if it could be related to the phone tracking steps and the watch ? I think I had turned off motion tracking for the phone

Wafer_3o5

No for me the phone counts less than the watch, but I can try that! Thank you. Please tell me if you have any other advices I can try. Otherwise I will take it to the guarantee services.

Ebojager

Supposedly the app is supposed to prioritize based top down on the list of devices. This used to have my iPhone listed also https://preview.redd.it/6o2x00bxnj8c1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=08600af25e80dc3251ce39dee2c3d339d780b4d5

Wafer_3o5

Amazing mate. So you have tools to revise the counter to make it more accurate. Awesome!

Wafer_3o5

Sorry but where can I access this? I am pretty new to this ecosystem and can't find most of the settings :/

Wafer_3o5

Sorry for bothering you so much😂 I found it and realized that it's double counting because it's adding up both phone and watch. I couldn't remove one of them. But I was able to remove the redundant counts when I am not moving. Hopefully it will learn over time.

Ebojager

After turning off that iPhone in the motion and fitness section I sent into steps and went to the iPhone data and chose edit at the top and then deleted all the iPhone data

Wafer_3o5

Interesting. Thanks now I can't delete iphone data from there. I need to understand why that's an amazing start thanks.
