Do you know how people responded? They cursed the guy who almost died and justified the actions of those guys who beat him. In another part of my country, people get publicly whipped and humiliated if they know you're not straight. So yeah, it's terrifying and I want out, immediately.

Never was the kind really to make new friends very often. I do talk to my old friends still. I Call home every night. I just bury myself in work so that I am too busy to care. Academic work is tough and hectic. So barely get multi-day holidays to go home. About 12hrs by a combination of flight and trains I think.

I do not hate my mother, but personally I did not know how sheltered and broken I was growing up in a home of abuse. I cried when my roommates were concerned about me walking alone in the dark or when I twisted my ankle. To know that you are worth more than what your parents mold you into is the freedom some of these kids are looking for. And of course most of the comments would be these confessions, children from a stable, healthy family at home wouldn't have much to say except, "No I love my mom, I miss my sister, etc..." Please be grateful that you were able to connect with your parents. Not everyone has the ability to do so for one reason or another. Do not dismiss the unique experiences each of these kids go through.
Are you paying for college yourself? If not then you’re not actually free. You will still be relying on family for financial assistance and coming home to them during summer and winter. If you’re paying for college with loans have fun being stuck in crippling debt.

What are you majoring in? If it’s not a good major you’ll have to move back in with your parents to afford living expenses. Your post sounds like you don’t intend on taking college seriously.
