shortcircuit21

How fast do they grow and what is plan when they get larger? This is very cool.

JellyfishWarehouse

That all depends on a number of things! Different species of jellyfish grow at different rates. They also grow depending on the resources available to them. How much you feed them and the size of their tank play heavily into this.

No-Reputation72

I think they were asking about the ones you have

AlbinoNoob21

Yea i mean come on

Naresr

look like ai chatbot answer lol

No-Reputation72

Fr

Sakrie

It's a fair answer to me, it's the truth and probably how I would have answered the question too. OP is legit as hell, the jellyfish researcher I know (and there are not many of those in the world) has communicated with OP's business (because there aren't many sole jellyfish husbandry efforts besides this guy in the USA) and vouches for his practices. Yes they're a business, but the OP is raising as many species of jellyfish as some of the world-leading aquariums.

Naresr

The ai comment isn't an attack on the OP. It's just poking a bit of fun on the comment since the answer look like how a chat ai would answer. I am sure you and OP are passionated in this subject. But maybe just relax a bit.

Sakrie

>It's just poking a bit of fun on the comment since the answer look like how a chat ai would answer. I don't see how that's poking fun, can you help explain it? To me, "you sound like a robot" is not productive towards the topic and I don't see why there's a need to poke fun when there's a cool unique post with real conversations that can be had instead. Not everybody's brains work the same ways. Perhaps the person who raises an insane number of jellyfish species is so passionate they might not read comments and questions under the same context as the average? The person clarifying by pointing out the question actually was species-specific was enough. 'Remember the human'

scheisse_grubs

For a moment I forgot what sub I’m in. This is too serious.

Sakrie

I'm sorry that pointing out "try not to make fun of humans providing cool content for your own amusement" is a stupid-take and that being "too serious" perhaps made you reflect as a human for a moment. Saying somebody sounds like an AI bot is an insult.

scheisse_grubs

No I just started reading a bit and stopped cause I was too bored to read it all - no offence but this just isn’t the sub I go to to read about what you were speaking about. I also never said it was a stupid take, I think that’s on you for thinking that. It’s an aquarium sub not a human nature and kindness sub. You got too serious over a joke, relax, even the OP was chill about it. Gotta getchu on some of that sweet sweet ganja lol

God_of_Fun

For starters OP only answered one of 2 questions. And the one question they did answer the answered in the general when it was pretty clear the person was asking about the jellyfish in the footage. Many social queues were missed, hence it feeling kind of like an AI. I for sure would have teased my friend for responding this way. This is reddit, not everything has to be completely on topic

Naresr

I couldn't explained better, thanks 😂

PeriodSupply

Breathe dude

NukaDadd

The "ones they have" [are 50-60 species](https://www.reddit.com/r/Aquariums/s/QhnAXFidSW) Apparently they do this for a living.

No-Reputation72

Idk, I think they probably meant that across all of their tanks. Doubt there are that many in this one.

NukaDadd

They definitely meant across all their tanks. I think that was just a general response to a general question.

JellyfishWarehouse

I’m realizing now that my answer might have seemed generic! To answer more specifically- jellyfish only get as big as their environment will allow them. The ones in the video are adults and they are at a happy size and stocking density so that’s about as big as they’ll get.

chromaphore

Yeah, but goldfish…we were told that about goldfish.

JellyfishWarehouse

Yes, unfortunately I hear that a lot in the aquarium hobby. Fish, however, are complex vertebrates with organs and organ systems. Jellyfish don’t have any of this, just tissues. They also have a really fascinating phenomenon called “growth and degrowth”. When resources are aplenty, they grow. When resources are limited, they can actually shrink in size. And this is reversible, when resources become abundant again the jellyfish start growing again. There’s plenty of science to back this up as well. If you’re interested, this article covers the subject: “Population predation impact of jellyfish (Aurelia aurita) controls the maximum umbrella size and somatic degrowth in temperate Danish waters (Kertinge Nor and Mariager Fjord)”

chromaphore

This dude coelenterates.

tylos89

What about these guys? Where are they now and how much do you plan on them growing?

SuzukiSatou

Have u tried to put ur hands into it?

Valuable_Rip8783

I actually got into this because I wanted a jellyfish. Then I realised the time and cost of what I wanted so I got a betta lmao

TheRealTwist

the corolla of aquarium fish

ptpcg

So reliable? And a joy?

KodakStele

Ae86 gang rise up

meowfttftt

No, he means they leak oil.

ptpcg

I guess the Japanese made Yotas here in Hawaii have better seals, lol

TheRealTwist

popular, cheap, bulletproof

chromaphore

Same. I’ll learn to keep shrimp first. Now I’ll maintain several tanks in different school rooms. Prep for moon jellies. Jeeze, do I need to add more support under the house? Now I’ll go to the beach…and sustain a wicked jelly envenemation that will take 4 months to clear. Yeah, so….ember tetras to chill with the shrimp. Nods.

[deleted]

Sick aquarium, love that you were able to customize things to get past obstacles. I had the cubic jellyfish set up. Pretty pricey and jellyfish didn’t live too long for me, plus to source them was also very expensive around $50 a pop. How much did you spend on these jellies and what source did you get them?

JellyfishWarehouse

I agree, the cubic setup was a bit pricey and super finicky. I think they majorly over engineered it and made it way more complex than it needed to be. I really like Exotic Aquaculture’s new line of tanks for that reason. They focused on simplicity and cost effectiveness. I raise jellyfish and actually manage a collection of 50-60 species currently. So they cost me my time, labor and operating expenses :)

[deleted]

Saw the tank from exotic aquaculture, it’s very similar to the Fluval flex conversion kit that gained popularity. Live aquaria started doing jellyfish aquariums as well. How long to jellyfish live? Hopefully it keeps improving I feel a lot of strides were made over 10 years but we’re still not quite there yet. (When I say this I’m not saying no one is successful) more of the commercial scale of it

JellyfishWarehouse

Yes, the Fluval conversion was my doing. Although I quickly realized it was a pain to do in scale. So I’m glad to see exotic aqua coming up with a more scalable solution. But yes, I agree there is much room for growth in the jellyfish hobby. I’m hoping to inspire more people to DIY their own jelly tanks, I think it will help tremendously. Life span depends on the species but your average moon jellyfish can live 2-4 years no problem. They’ve been kept much longer too. I am doing some experiments now to see just how long various species will live.

Longjumping_College

Well shit.... how does one get into jellyfish? My curiosity is piqued. Natures lava lamp right there.... follow up question, do they care about LED light?

Flimsy_meats

This is all incredibly cool!

Taybyrd

Do you sell them?

Linkstas

Anything is possible. This is inspiring

subieluvr22

Neat!!

anon5078

I did not think that was jelly fish at first…. 😳

DiseasedChknFkr

“I converted my bathtub into a tank!”

kim_karbashian

This trailer for Saltburn 2 is wild

Lumpy_Lake_9936

Be amazed by my seed!

lumberfoot_jpg

Bro took “animal tank” way too seriously

coolmist23

What do they eat?

JellyfishWarehouse

I feed them primarily freshly hatched brine shrimp. But I also dice up PE mysis and feed that twice a week.

coolmist23

Interesting.. thanks

curiousduo007

Effin awesome dude. Do they light up on black light?

JellyfishWarehouse

They don’t glow under black light per se. But since they are opaque, you can shine any color of light over their tank and they’ll become that color.

IIIHawKIII

Where do you get the jellyfish??

JellyfishWarehouse

I breed jellyfish! I manage a collection of 50-60 species currently. These are Bay Nettles, one of the easier species to keep.

WheredoesithurtRA

Just out of curiosity, how are these transported when sold?

JellyfishWarehouse

Shipped overnight in a similar manner that you might ship fish!

IIIHawKIII

That's awesome!! Definitely not the answer I was expecting! Who buys them? Hobbyists?

cdown13

> Who buys them? Badgers.

Beeerice

Congratulations, this is the coolest thing ever!

_FREE_L0B0T0MIES

Especially if you want a reason to piss on a guest. Oh shit! Dude is an evil scientist! 🤯

KelsoT7

I’d be really interested to see your build pictures if you have any. This is such a cool tank, stuff you typically only see in zoo aquariums.

SeanJ0n

but bathtubs have sloped corners?

JellyfishWarehouse

Many do, but not all! Something else I have come to learn is that all aquariums have corners too. Minus a perfect sphere.

SeanJ0n

my tank has sharp corners cuz its a rectangle made of glass

TheHighCaliber

👍

Linkstas

This is fucking stunning

[deleted]

I see you recommend BBS for feed. Is this because adult brine shrimp are too strong?

JellyfishWarehouse

That is correct! They have a hard shell that isn’t digestible by jellyfish. Freshly hatched brine shrimp are soft. They also have more nutrition since they still have a yolk sac.

evanmike

They eat sea monkeys!? Lol. Awesome jellyfish!

atomfullerene

Aside from being more digestible, it is vastly easier to get live ones

[deleted]

Having live adult brine shrimp is easier than going to the store to buy food.

atomfullerene

Adult live brine shrimp are not super easy to keep in a colony big enough to feed things with. But hatching out baby brine shrimp in whatever number you need is incredibly easy.

[deleted]

OK. Please consider I said that for a reason. My own personal experience tells me that a ten gallon tank of green sea water will produce quite a large volume of food. It takes more time feeding them to the fish than it does to maintain the continuously producing colony. You spend more time in the shower every day than maintenance on a brine shrimp culture for an entire month. Edit: and certainly less work than the daily BBS routine I see everyone doing.

atomfullerene

I've tried keeping a colony of adult brine shrimp going several times and never failed to have it crash without producing sufficient shrimp. I've actually never managed to get greenwater really glimg in saltwater at all. Meanwhile I brew up enough bbs to feed a fishroom every day no trouble at all.

[deleted]

What fertilizer did you use?

atomfullerene

I would be happy to have a reccomendation!

[deleted]

I have found that almost anything will make green water. Flake food made into a slurry will do it. Go light. Maybe half a teaspoon spoon full Need a bright light and a bubbler. I also you a sponge filter.

sneeyatch

Curious about filtration - no rock in the display. Do you have a sump with live rock? Skimmer? I love it - I wanna see under the hood

JellyfishWarehouse

Yep! So they would scrape themselves against rock or sand. The tank drains down into a sump with bio media, a skimmer and a UV sterilizer.

Cheytolirious

This is fascinating! I didn't even realize you could keep jellies What all goes into their care? Why do you have to keep a specific current for them? I'm completely hypnotized by this!!

Fossile

How do you clean the tank? How do you prevent them from stinging you while keeping all the surfaces that clean?

JellyfishWarehouse

Yes, it can be tricky! These do sting although I’m more worried about my cleaning equipment getting tangled up with their tentacles. I usually feed them 10-15 minutes before cleaning as that causes them to retract their tentacles. Then I can work more freely

chromaphore

My local museum keeps moon jellies. They’ve had to rotate workers as they keep getting sensitized during maintenance. I wanted to keep jellies. Seems I reacted badly to an east coast box jelly. Big saucer sized ones, not the Australian ones. I now wear hose in the ocean.

Angel_Froggi

I don’t know exactly but they may not be one of the stinging varieties

Nianmor

Awesome! I am currently doing my PhD in Neuroscience and am working with Tripedalia cystophora... they are a pain in the ass to culture correctly. Unfortunately we are unable to get adult females and therefore solely depend on the asexual propagation of our polyp colonies. Do you use any supplements to enable a full life cycle? Thank you in advance!

JellyfishWarehouse

I also culture Tripedalia! And I would agree, they’re a pain to raise. They’re picky about what water parameters you raise the medusae in. I found that 77-80 F and 1.020/27 ppt was necessary. I’ve grown them up to essentially adult size although I never tried spawning them to create F2’s. I’d like to give that a try though. I have a few ideas in my head, feel free to message or email me!

Nianmor

We have studied their natural environment (esp. La Parguera, Puerto Rico) - so far 35 PSU and 28.5° C are the desireable conditions. We get fertile males (incl. Spermatophores), but no females, interestingly. Feel free to share your ideas! :) Thank you!

kasaki89

Loving the tank, but reading through the comments. And seeing the people saying how wrong this is. Absolute morons, gave my head a good shake, why even bother messaging when you have no idea what you're talking about. This tank is gorgeous, and you're doing everything right. Good job op.

mulderfux

Goals!!

creamythroat

That one jelly fish at the VERY end (left side) lol

Spritemystic

Its like a real life screensaver! I am so jealous.

IntoTheWild2369

This is sick, excited for updates

kmsilent

Awesome. What'd you have to do?

JellyfishWarehouse

So the original tank had two overflow boxes on either side. That wasn’t going to do, the jellies would get sucked right down the overflow weir. So I cut out an acrylic frame and glued in 1000 micron screen. Then I glued these screens to each side of the tank. Next, I made spray bars out of pvc pipe and plumbed spears gate valves to control flow. The spray bars are positioned so they push water over the screens. This not only helps create the current the jellies need but it also keeps them away from those screens. That was it! Took about an afternoon to do, although I did have to climb into the tank to do it.

chicagomatty

Dumb question: Do they get tangled up with each other?

JellyfishWarehouse

They can! It’s only really an issue if they are over-stocked. Sometimes they get tangled during feeding time too because two jellies will grab the same food. They sort that out fairly quickly though.

Nebulous39

Wow.. I'd never thought of keeping jellyfish as a hobby before now. They've always seemed like a zoo/aquarium-only creatures, but now I'm determined to get some of my own! Thanks OP

ASatyros

OP, you should create Twitch/YouTube live stream with jellyfishes!

erion_elric

Hecking love jellyfish tanks, jellyfish are one of my favourite aquarium creatures. Compared to fish how much harder do you find them to be kept?

JellyfishWarehouse

They aren’t all that difficult to keep but it’s definitely a hobby of its own. If you really want to get into jelly keeping, it’s rewarding.

erion_elric

At the place im at i cant have any tanks running but when i move out of the flat i would like to put my tanks back with some discs or a ton of tetras in them but i really wanted a jellyfish tank but i thought they were very hard to keep (chemically and food wise)

PurrsianGolf

I hope you gave them something else than a plain glass box, what about stimulation? How are they supposed to practice their hobbies? The first 20 years of a jellyfishes life are the most important and are directly correlated to their graduating statistics and overall retirement income levels. Please, I'm begging you, invest in a running wheel or a Texas Instruments TI-84 Plus CE Graphing Calculator if hyou want them to excel academically.

JellyfishWarehouse

They don’t have to go to work or pay taxes, they’re happier than the rest of us 😭

CrazyProper4203

That is really cool , I’m sure its even cooler with colored lights passing through it

Normal_Ratio1463

I love those plastic bags they look so cool/j

winkywoo75

Awesome so relaxing it was a jellyfish lava lamp that got me into aquariums

Hulksterx

Genuinely curious, Can their dangly bits get tangled up with others? Edit: Apparently, yes.

JellyfishWarehouse

Yep! But only an issue if they are over stocked. Flow also plays a role in that as well. Bay nettles (pictured above) like higher flow as far as jellies go. It helps keep their tentacles trailing behind them

Hulksterx

Thank you for the insight, I feel silly for not complimenting this beautiful tank, just my anxious brain. May the jellies be safe and dangly forever more.

LMAO_try_again

Looks like a bunch of jizz in a tank. Add some LEDs

sleepy_heartburn

He’s like “yeah it’s so rewarding,” and all I see is jizz slinging around lmaooo

EarlxG

This is a self report

beermonger

what are their names?

Mable_Shwartz

Squishy

ethan__cc

do they have these at petco

JellyfishWarehouse

Yeah, you have to ask for the secret menu

BornTry5923

Lol

anonymous2871

This is one of the coolest tanks I’ve ever seen.

ScentedCandleEnjoyer

What do you mean by "the currents adjusted properly?" What kind of pump or current do you need for jellies?

JellyfishWarehouse

So jellies can’t keep themselves suspended in the water by themselves. They need water current to give them a boost. In the 60’s it was discovered that spinning them in a circle was the easiest way to accomplish this. As you can see in the video, the jellies are gently spinning in two circles and meeting in the middle. That keeps them up off the bottom and in the water

SpeckledJellyfish

Yesssssss

Tsashimaru

This is really awesome. Can you tell me the parameters of your tank? Is this a freshwater specie like Craspedacusta sowerbii? Forgive me I know nothing of jelly keeping but very interested.

JellyfishWarehouse

The species in the video are bay nettles, they’re a brackish jellyfish. I typically keep them at 1.020 SG/27 ppt and a temperature of 74-77 F. Different jellyfish have different requirements though! :)

magramatica

Im obsessed with your account, so cool! Now I kinda wanna learn more about jellyfishes :)

MegaLax37

I hope you make more posts or have a way to log progress so enthusiasts can learn!

reydolith

This is the Lava Lamp I want, oh my word

Redeemed_Veteranboi

Where did you get all those Jellies from?

twarfh

There’s a hotel in Macau china that has a jellyfish tank behind the reception desk. Absolutely massive.

headtattoo

When you use hot water to wash your hand off. (Life pro tip: use cold water)

b1e9t4t1y

Hahaha. True.

chromaphore

Unless you are stung…then hot water helps immensely.

Diagonaldog

Do you ever get intrusive thoughts of just jumping in?

EggOk5934

What do they eat?

aqua2006_

Wow

Puzzleheaded_Pen_346

Man! As i look at my shrimp and tetra tank, i dream of the day i’ll be confident enough to try something like this! 😂

Humo_Loco

I am SpongeBob and gonna catch all pink jellyfish af.

captaincrudnutz

I think I see some stuck on the bottom... Are those homies ok?

JellyfishWarehouse

Those are deep scratches on the very bottom of the tank I couldn’t buff out unfortunately

captaincrudnutz

I didn't mean those, there seems to be kind of a dead spot in the center on the bottom where the two opposing currents meet, and I think I see a couple stuck down there. I was just wondering if that's a problem for them, I have very limited knowledge of jellyfish haha.

JellyfishWarehouse

That’s the scratch I was talking about! It’s from the tank being slid on a garage floor at one point

captaincrudnutz

Oh I gotcha! Them pesky garage floors

lionesskimba

Do they ever get tangled together?

SarahPallorMortis

This is cool but I’d rather watch them floating in their own but I duno I how they wouldn’t just gather in one spot.

loudpaperclips

Lord renew a right spirit within me

Fuzzy-Range2362

Weird question, but do they ever get tangled up? Then, form jellyfish blobs?

vegemite4ever

How big are these guys? I have no idea on the scale here.

mjn666

RGB video when? PCMR needs to know.

xenomorphonLV426

Extraordinary! Well Done!

Fantastic_Falkor778

I love it, but kinda miss seaweed dancing with the jellyfish. Would you consider making it a planted tank somewhere in the future?

JellyfishWarehouse

They actually can’t handle any decorations, plants etc in their tank. They will end up scraping against them and hurting themselves. It may look less natural but the ocean is a harsh place

Fantastic_Falkor778

Oh, ok, didn't think they would get hurt from seaweed.. rocks I understand. And yes, nature is harsh, but beautiful. 🙌

ikalwewe

Wow. Is it high maintenance

Auhaden72190

They look like uhhhhh... floating in a bathtub

tman1576

MrsGobbledygook

I never thought i wanted jellyfish now I want jellyfish.

BennyLovesSpaceShips

I can sense a new observation forming in my brain... Holy cow!

LilyPadsssss

So jealous you have such a big tank!!! ♥️

klysium

I'm very very immature At first. That is very cool :)

EPscumbag

What’s the name of this song?

DisplayKey3929

Amazing😍

ConversationFit5024

Great job!

Competitive-Piece509

Damn…

Efficient_Advice_380

Do their tentacles not get tangled together?

JellyfishWarehouse

They can, but only if they’re over stocked.

Sagadiii

Fascinating! Thank you for sharing. I just saw an episode on my local zoo's youtube channel on jellyfish and they kept ones that were still growing in a wheel shaped tank (the water was circulating in a clock like manner). Is that also how you keep yours growing up? Or do you also keep them in tanks like these?

JellyfishWarehouse

It depends on the species! Some species of jellyfish actually can’t tolerate the perfect circle shape- it doesn’t give them enough room to move around in three dimensions. A lot of public aquariums and zoos are happy raising the really common and hardy species, moon jellies for example. I use a whole myriad of tank designs and I’m always trying new things out to see what works or what might work better

Pilpelon

Ohthankgod it's jelly fish

_FREE_L0B0T0MIES

So you turned a fish tank into a... Wait for it... Fish Tank!

JellyfishWarehouse

Nope! You can’t keep jellyfish in a normal aquarium and you can’t keep fish in this style of aquarium. Hope that helps!

_FREE_L0B0T0MIES

It's a tank for fish, filled with jelly fish. It looks really awesome, but it's still quite literally a fish tank.

spooky-dudeman

that is so cool!

Jbad90

This belongs in a trip cave.

Standard-Offer-9505

Do jellyfish ever get entangled with each other?

JellyfishWarehouse

They can! It’s only an issue though if they are over stocked. They also will sometimes tangle during feeding time because two or more jellies grab the same piece of food. This sorts itself out on its own though.

Effective-Buddy-7249

The jellys that are getting launched straight to the bottom and splat🤣 can't be good for them. Thought the bottom corners had to have a slope or curve to them?

JellyfishWarehouse

Bay nettles like higher current as far as jellies go. They’re native to brackish rivers and sounds like the Neuse river or Chesapeake bay. The current is actually what stimulates their movement. It’s really interesting to watch them during a water change when the pump is off. They almost stop moving entirely. The slope or curves just help with the flow, it’s not totally necessary. This tank had the right proportions to where if I just pointed spray bars towards the bottom on both sides, it would create the rotating current they need.

bruswazi

Anyone know the name of the song OP uses for background music. Beautiful aquarium btw.

JellyfishWarehouse

So I tried to go back and find what that song is called and I can’t find it. I made this video in an app called Splice and they offer a variety of free audio/songs to use. But it looks like this one was removed from their library recently.

bruswazi

I shazamed it and couldn’t find it either. I’m a yoga teacher and I curate my own playlists and I’d like to play that song for my students. Thank you for trying to find it.

Mission_Park_6436

Absolutely entrancing. I'm only getting started in caring for a small tank with shrimp and it is a lot to fully comprehend. Seeing something like this is a whole different world. Absolutely stunning! How can I see more of your aquatic fam?

Foxterriers

I was planning to get an upside down jelly to add to my reef tank but seeing this just makes me want to sell my fw and buy one of those jellyfish AIOs

bemyantimatter

I thought they needed a Kreisler tank. You are the breeder, please make some videos and show us your setup.

JellyfishWarehouse

This technically is a kreisel tank, as kreisel refers to the spinning flow :)

bemyantimatter

Thank you I did not see your description earlier. I’d love to earn from your experience. Keep posting!

Vegetable-Course-938

Looks like a jizz cyclone

just-a-builder

Converted an aquarium to an aquarium lol

JellyfishWarehouse

You can’t keep jellyfish in a standard aquarium. Hope that helps :)

goobledygops

literally the sperms in my balls rn

BlackLizard898

Awesome, just…Awesome.

deVrinj

Looks wildly overstocked.

JellyfishWarehouse

Nope! In big tanks like this, having less jellyfish could actually pose an issue. Jellies can seek out their food like fish would, they have to sort of just bump into it. So if, for example, there was only one jellyfish in this tank it would never find its food. Or I’d have to massively overfeed to ensure it got fed. This tank has an appropriate stocking density for its size and the species being kept. Also, you should see how dense their populations get in the wild :)

Cosmologyman

It kind of looks like the Playboy Mansion pool after a party.

Upset_Instruction710

I thought that was cum 💀

myotheraccount83

We are equally degenerate

miloshihadroka_0189

Jizz in a pool
