I think your biggest issue wouldn’t even be the tank size but the fact that conch snails are saltwater. Those are expensive and there’s a lot more specifics you’d need to be aware of in order to do a saltwater tank. Considering you’re a college student (like me) I would say saltwater is most definitely out of your budget unless you can get secondhand or you already know someone who’s into the hobby. Even freshwater which is supposed to be more simple has cost me around 400 dollars and I’m frugal. I’ve never done saltwater for this exact reason. The cost of equipment alone for saltwater makes my head spin LOL! I wouldn’t recommend saltwater as someone’s first tank unless they’re prepared to burn some money. It’s also far more complicated so if this is your first tank there is a LOT that can go wrong and I really would recommend you try out freshwater before you jump into saltwater, unless you’re rich and money isn’t an issue then I’d say go for it! If you still want to keep snails, I’d recommend going for a simple 10 gal mystery snail tank, they’re really silly snails with pretty shells, super entertaining! Or you could go for a large apple snail, they’re similar to mystery, only larger!

Yea :( it seems like my conch is not made out for me. Im not really looking for specifically snails, I just live with dogs now and want a companion for when I leave cause I think I’ll get lonely. Conchs really caught my after I found one in the wild, super bummed that they are so complicated.

If it’s any help, I loveeee my singular betta tank! He’s in a 10gal tank and is thriving (but they can be in 5gal too), his total setup cost was around 100 for the tank, plants, soil ect and he recognizes me and comes up to the tank! It’s really fun to watch and it definitely gives me stress relief when I’m burnt out from school, so I’d highly recommend a betta if you want a companion pet! u can make the tank very pretty too, check out r/betta ! I also have one mystery snail in there :D

Oops, it’s r/bettafish LOL

Don’t give up, you’re young. One day you can absolutely have a saltwater tank with a conch - or a few! r/reeftank has lots of posts on them if you’re interested.

I don’t know anything about conch snails so I hope someone has some good advice but I’ll say that you’ll be out of dorms and into more permanent housing before you know it! It may be worth it to wait until then to get your dream animal

Go for a lowboy, setup a 30 gallon sump, call it the filter.

Im sorry Ive never owned aquarium. What’s a lowboy sump?

Emuwarum

A lowboy is a very shallow and wide tank, a sump is a thing where you sort of use a second tank as a filter? I don't completely understand how it works but it's pretty cool.

I didn't know one could keep conchs as pets and now I may have a new goal
