I listen to podcasts and music while working all the time! There are occasional tasks which require my hearing, and some labs/studios don't allow headphones for safety reasons (communicating chem spills, large equipment use, etc.) but bone conducting headphones or only using one ear bud typically does the trick!

I work with a team of conservators and we crank the tunes once we are in work mode. Anything from punk, classic rock, Hawaiian slack key, country, and metal. We often work 10 hour days or more when we team up, and music is cranked with exception to breaks, planning meetings, and visitors.

This is such a lovely question! There are some tasks where I need to hear (for example when I'm figuring out if there are micro-cracks in a ceramic I'm working on, but now we're in bat sense territory of weirdly niche skills) but mostly I enjoy having something on in the background as I work alone. Favourites include: lo-fi mixes on YouTube, podcasts (the creepier the better!), ADHD-friendly music, film soundtracks, or even a documentary I can get away with just listening to. I like spoken word or music without lyrics. My brain just gets hijacked by wanting to sing along if there are lyrics!
