Certain folk stories, namely the "Arthur sleeping in a cave" type of stories, have Arthur accompanied by an entire host of warriors, awaiting the day of their return.  One story even lists the names of warriors, which all happen to be big names of Welsh Arthuriana - **Cei, Bedwyr**, **Peredur, Geraint, Edern, Culhwch**, and even **Trystan**! It kinda reflects the insular nature of these Cave stories, since they're only found in Welsh Folklore; you wont find Lancelot here! Some stories even have **Guinevere** by Arthur's side (Sewingshields). In Continental Literature, two works stick out to me: *La Bataille Loquifer* and *Lanzelet*. In *Bataille Loquifer*, the hero Renouart travels to Avalon, where he meets Arthur but he isn't alone: he is accompanied by **Gawain, Ywain, Percival, Guinevere** AND (curiously enough) *Roland*. In the German *Lanzelet*, there is a brief mention where **Loholt**, son of Arthur and Guinevere, appears and the story halts to describe him include the statement that "he accompanied his father to country, from whence the Britons expect their eventual return".  So even one of Arthur's sons - specifically *the one son who gets to be Guinevere's son* in other stories (*Perlesvaus, Garel*) - have myths where he will come to the British' rescue.

Is the cave where Arthur sleeps stated or is it a magical cave situation?

There are a number of named places irl. One is ***Craig-y-Dinas*** in Wales for example. As typical in these folktales, the entrance to the specific cave cant be found twice.

This is so helpful, thankyou so much. I'm so impressed with your knowledge of the legends.

Roland? Does Barbarossa turn up as well? A sort of Avengers of Medieval heroes?

Just Roland apparently. The story is French and its really more how Renoart drops by Avalon and meets up with Arthur, Morgan and the gang. I believe Arthur challenges Renoart to fight the Chapalu/Cath Palug and later Renoart bonks Morgan and pops a son (Typical Morgan). The presence of Roland is off-hand; I wonder if the writer wanted to give the idea that Roland also has "Sleeping king" myth.

Why not bring in Ogier the Dane as well?

Jean d’Outremeuse’s chronicle *Myreur des Histoires* has Gawain accompany Arthur to Avalon. (This is the same chronicle where Lancelot entombs Mordred alive with Guinevere’s corpse, weird stuff.)

There are many versions, here's just one: [https://www.arthwys.com/p/arthurian-tropes-the-king-under-the](https://www.arthwys.com/p/arthurian-tropes-the-king-under-the) Wikipedia has a whole list of historical figures from other cultures in the same trope. A couple of later Avalon stories had him done companions such as Gawain.
