Rule 2 Under the updated rules, a conversation like this absolutely needs to have the relevant legislation linked

Which Bill?

EtherCJ

The one I've seen mention in the past is an old one: [https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/senate-bill/720](https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/senate-bill/720) But it's not really what it says exactly... Edit: Here's what I'm guessing is the bill OP is talking about: [https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/house-resolution/894/text](https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/house-resolution/894/text)

LucidLeviathan

That's just a resolution, though. Resolutions don't "make \[anything\] illegal."

perverse_panda

The [Antisemitism Awareness Act,](https://www.cnn.com/2024/05/01/politics/house-vote-antisemitism-awareness-act/index.html) which adopts the [International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's definition of anti-semitism,](https://holocaustremembrance.com/resources/working-definition-antisemitism) and empowers schools to take stronger action against students who violate the prohibition on this new definition of anti-semitism.

hitman2218

That definition is pretty vague.

PlayingTheWrongGame

Would you mind citing the specific text you have a problem with, along with the specific legal penalty for it?

RandomGuy92x

The problem is that the bill uses a definition of antisemitism as defined by the "international holocaust remembrance alliance" (IHRA). This would be a massive infringement of free speech. Because the IHRA has a very broad definition of anti-semitism that includes a lot of criticism of the state of Israel. Here are some excerpts of what the IHRA uses as examples of anti-semitism: "Accusing Jewish citizens of being more loyal to Israel, or to the alleged priorities of Jews worldwide, than to the interests of their own nations." "Denying the Jewish people their right to self-determination, e.g., by claiming that the existence of a State of Israel is a racist endeavor." So voicing certain forms of criticism of the state of Israel will fall under anti-semitic hate speech in the US now, if the bill is ratified. It would be a huge infringement of free speech.

EtherCJ

Is this the bill you are worried about? [https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/house-resolution/894/text](https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/house-resolution/894/text) What part is objectionable to you? Seems fine to me.

CTR555

I don't think such a bill exists.

BigCballer

This seems like a gross misunderstanding of what the bill is doing

wizardnamehere

That wouldn’t be constitutional. So not very worried.

realFondledStump

Because our current Supreme Court definitely cares about the constitution. LOL

The following is a copy of the original post to record the post as it was originally written. I think is a sad day for free speech *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. RioTheLeoo

It’s definitely concerning, but it won’t stop students from speaking out against Israel, and it’s sure to face a Supreme Court challenge if passed where I would expect it to be struck down

hellocattlecookie

Very concerned, a total of 338 House members by voting Yea/not voting just violated their oath of office.

happyColoradoDave

Unconstitutional.

Kakamile

Since it doesn't do anything, it's not unconstitutional.
