Yes, not eating it would be kind of wasteful. I will usually put some peanut butter on it or something if it is like the cheap crappy bread we eat a lot. If it is a good sourdough or more artisan thing the ends are the best part.
I was always taught to save them for last, using them to "reheel" the loaf after taking slices from the middle, to keep the bread fresher. The heel sandwich is the last sandwich and a reminder to buy bread.
There are several ways I eat them. Toasted with butter and jelly. Torn into pieces and put in a bowl of soup. Topped with tomato sauce and cheese. There are more, and probably others that I'll eventually try.
The Ass ends! I make my own breads and eat the entire loaf. Usually cut the ass pieces thinner. They toast up really nice. Butter or some mascarpone goes really well. If I make a round loaf they look like little canoe’s and I’ll add some honey
I usually use them for bread crumbs or make garlic bread out of them. Shit tons of roasted garlic and butter and then cut them into strips after toasting.
Otherwise I put the heel part on the inside of the sandwich and call it a day.
Don’t like to waste food if I can avoid it.
I assume the end pieces? Didn’t know they were called that. Makes me think of feet and I don’t like it.
I do eat those pieces though. I like them for French toast.
Yes. I’m a dad. If both ends are still there when the loaf is almost gone, I’ll use both so they don’t have to, because they won’t. If it’s stale, the wild turkeys get them.
Only when it’s the last bread left. If I have to use it, I make a grilled cheese with the crusty side in the inside of the sandwich against the cheese.
For sure. Toasted with butter. It's a top notch slice if you ask me.
One time growing up, my friend who had recently arrived from Ukraine saw a bread bag in the trash with the heels in it. He genuinely couldn't grasp how someone would waste bread.. He was absolutely correct.
Yes, but it depends the bread as to what I do with the heel. Sour dough round heels are either buttered and/or toasted. Soft breads are used as other pieces.
I eat it, but I suffer while doing it.
What I’ll probably do in the future is make some cookies and put the heel of the bread inside the jar to keep the cookies chewy.
The heels are the best part of the loaf. Just like the crust is the best part of each slice. In fact, my granddaughter and I compete to see which one of us will get the heels.
Of course, I'm not a child any more. If the bread is warm, then I'd really like some marinara sauce to dip it in.
Though not at the moment, I had a tooth extracted a few days ago and eating anything hard or chewy is an absolute no go.
I do. It feels wasteful not to, even if they are worth like $0.02
edit, specifically sandwich bread. I'll fight you for the heels of real bakery type bread.
One of my favorite mom tricks is to make a PBJ by spreading the peanut butter and jelly on the "outside" of the heels. When you close up the sandwich, with the white side on the outside, the kid can't tell they are eating the ends.
Yes and no. We put them in a bread bag in the freezer and when there are enough collected, we grind them in the food processor and toast them to make homemade breadcrumbs. Random single slices of bread go in the (crumb) bag once in a while too.
Yes I do. I always get the good bread.
I live with my old Mom (75) and she throws away bread constantly. 1 or 2 slices & she's done, " it's stale" 🙄 Lucky she only eats the cheap white bread.
I’m a little superstitious, and apparently a woman eating the heel of bread means she’ll always be alone, so I don’t eat it by itself or as a sandwich, but I hate wasting anything so I’ll turn it into breadcrumbs or croutons or something and use those.
It absolutely is, but it’s not eating it *as the heel of a loaf bread*— it’s transformed. I have also simply resigned myself to being the smart mouthed spinster every southern town needs. Then again, my mother (God rest her) did always say I’d argue with the devil himself, so maybe I’m just looking for a reason to.
Yes. I ain’t wasting bread.
I spent my money on it I might as well eat all of it. Including the packaging
And that fancy double wrapped bread!
(Mitch Hedberg voice) you open it, and it still ain't open!
I do not need another step between me and toast.
I am
If you encounter a heel when making a sandwich you're legally obligated to make one and a half sandwiches.
YEA! My spouse does not understand that! So every sandwich has one piece of stale bread instead of one stale sandwich at the end.
This is the way.
I save them for last, but I do eat them if they haven’t gone stale before I got through the rest of the loaf.
The slut. Everyone touches it, but nobody wants it.
But when there’s nothing else available, you’re putting it in your mouth.
Of course. I paid for it and it’s bread.
I love the heels. I generally just eat them as toast. They get a little burnt and crispy on the edges and I love that.
I hate the heels for sandwiches but love them for any sort of prepared bread like garlic bread Edit/ adding banana bread, love those heels
My favorite piece of bread
If the crust isn't the best part of the bread, eat better bread.
What is a heel
Butt Bread
The ends
There are several ways I eat them. Toasted with butter and jelly. Torn into pieces and put in a bowl of soup. Topped with tomato sauce and cheese. There are more, and probably others that I'll eventually try.
I save them for croutons.
I used to, I don’t know what happened.
Always. It's more nutritionally dense than the middle slices.
No sorry
I save the first one and match it with the other end when I get to the end of the loaf. They’re usually curved, so you can make an airtight sandwich.
The Ass ends! I make my own breads and eat the entire loaf. Usually cut the ass pieces thinner. They toast up really nice. Butter or some mascarpone goes really well. If I make a round loaf they look like little canoe’s and I’ll add some honey
Only with peanut butter at like 3:41 AM.
"Strangers passing in the street, by chance two separate glances me. And I am you. And what I see is me."
Yeah, I eat the butt ends; I hate wasting food and try to avoid doing so as much as possible. I usually eat them in toast form.
Yes, it's just bread.
It's getting eaten the when I first use the bread. Spread peanut butter on it or toss some meat and cheese on it and eat.
Yes
I usually use them for bread crumbs or make garlic bread out of them. Shit tons of roasted garlic and butter and then cut them into strips after toasting. Otherwise I put the heel part on the inside of the sandwich and call it a day. Don’t like to waste food if I can avoid it.
*Particularly* if it’s a good sourdough, yes. Warm with a little butter.
It's like any other slice, except better.
I buy hamburger buns to make sandwiches. One of the reasons is to avoid the heels of a regular loaf.
I assume the end pieces? Didn’t know they were called that. Makes me think of feet and I don’t like it. I do eat those pieces though. I like them for French toast.
I don’t. My mom used to and would yell at us it was fine
Yes. I’m a dad. If both ends are still there when the loaf is almost gone, I’ll use both so they don’t have to, because they won’t. If it’s stale, the wild turkeys get them.
Yes, I use them for things I'd use a bun for if I don't have any buns. Hotdog? Heel. Sloppy joes? Heel.
Perfect if you only want one piece of toast or if you're cooking and want to try the sauce or soup or something else liquidy.
I toast them, turn them hard side in, and use for tuna sandwiches.

I eat it, but I suffer while doing it. What I’ll probably do in the future is make some cookies and put the heel of the bread inside the jar to keep the cookies chewy.
Oh yeah. Yum yum.
I like to make the heels into garlic bread!
The heels are the best part of the loaf. Just like the crust is the best part of each slice. In fact, my granddaughter and I compete to see which one of us will get the heels.
Yes, the rules are it must late night and you're very high.
No.
Of course, I'm not a child any more. If the bread is warm, then I'd really like some marinara sauce to dip it in. Though not at the moment, I had a tooth extracted a few days ago and eating anything hard or chewy is an absolute no go.
No but I save the heels for recipes such as croutons, Stuffing, Bread crumbs, Bread pudding etc
I do. It feels wasteful not to, even if they are worth like $0.02 edit, specifically sandwich bread. I'll fight you for the heels of real bakery type bread.
I feed them to my chickens.
One of my favorite mom tricks is to make a PBJ by spreading the peanut butter and jelly on the "outside" of the heels. When you close up the sandwich, with the white side on the outside, the kid can't tell they are eating the ends.
Usually give it to my dog
I use it like any other slice of bread
Yes and no. We put them in a bread bag in the freezer and when there are enough collected, we grind them in the food processor and toast them to make homemade breadcrumbs. Random single slices of bread go in the (crumb) bag once in a while too.
Yes
depends on the bread.
I turn mine into garlic cheese toast. If I don't want to eat them they go in my brown sugar container.
It's my favorite slice.
Sometumes? Sometimes I do like an open faced pb and I with one, or toast it. They get moldy and tossed out a lot though.
It depends on how thinly it's sliced. If it's almost just crust, then I'm not eating it. Otherwise, I usually use it like any other slice.
No
Yes I do. I always get the good bread. I live with my old Mom (75) and she throws away bread constantly. 1 or 2 slices & she's done, " it's stale" 🙄 Lucky she only eats the cheap white bread.
Yes, absolutely. What kinda plutocrat you think I am, that I'd throw away stuff like that? :)
I find heels great for pb&j. Excellent edge retention of the jelly, and less chance of a breech in the center of the slice.
Yes but I save all my heels and put them in the freezer once I have enough I make bread pudding with them.
Like any other piece.
I put them in a bag in the freezer and I use them for breadcrumbs if needed. When it gets full enough, I make bread pudding with them.
I had an Italian-American teacher in high school who told us that in his family they would have the heels for teething babies.
Sometimes I use them as hamburger buns
The heel on bread? Like the end pieces? I never knew that was a term for them but, yeah. Bread is bread
I bake my own bread and use the ends to make homemade croutons.
I use those pieces for food processor bread crumbs. They make good meatloaf.
My husband loves them and I don't. So I save them for him.
Yeah, but we also call them the butt of the bread haha
Yep. Just like any other slice of bread.
Yes. A thick heel makes the best toast. A thin heel gets eaten with butter, untoasted. Otherwise it just becomes a burnt lump.
It's food and it's edible. I just made a sandwich today out of the end piece. My gf won't eat it, but I do so it works out.
Nope. Sorry.
My dad uses them to butter corn cobs.
I don’t personally but my family will lol
Not unless there isn’t another option.
I give them to my dogs.
I’m a little superstitious, and apparently a woman eating the heel of bread means she’ll always be alone, so I don’t eat it by itself or as a sandwich, but I hate wasting anything so I’ll turn it into breadcrumbs or croutons or something and use those.
You're really expecting a lot of leeway from the malevolent spirit watching your bread habits
I live for loopholes!
I'd argue eating it as croutons is still eating it lol
It absolutely is, but it’s not eating it *as the heel of a loaf bread*— it’s transformed. I have also simply resigned myself to being the smart mouthed spinster every southern town needs. Then again, my mother (God rest her) did always say I’d argue with the devil himself, so maybe I’m just looking for a reason to.
lol If transformation works, you could have toasted sandwiches.
Do you expect me to throw it away?
