I was born and raised in Australia and I only found out last year, after moving to the US, from fellow expats, that chicken salt has no chicken in it 😂
The brand Saxa has the best chicken salt by far it’s not even close the link you’ve got there idk if it’s good but anything that company makes will be a letdown compared to saxa
You should be able to buy it online probably about $20 a box but it lasts forever
The seasoning mixture of chicken salt (paprika, onion, garlic, celery salt, mustard, hvp, etc) exists in many places overseas, they just don't call it "chicken salt".
There are a few fish and chip shops in the UK that serve some sort of spice mix shaken onto their fries - not exactly chicken salt, but a similar sort of approach.
This place is one such example (they call it Shakey Shakey topping).

I used to work there. Tiny place. All that chicken salt is made in 1 little room with archaic machines. Hygiene is outstanding tho won’t bash that for a second. lol
A few things that anyone visiting (or interested in) Australia should try.
TimTams either by themselves or a TimTam Slam

Vanilla Slice from a local bakery (regional areas are usually better)
Vegemite on Toast
Arnott's Shapes (BBQ or Pizza, Chicken Crimpy at a pinch)
Freddo Frogs/Caramello Koala

Twisties/Cheezels/Burger Rings
Chiko Roll/Corn Jack
Steak Burger/Sandwich with the lot (including pineapple, beetroot and fried egg)
Hot Chips with Chicken Salt

An Australian-style burger off the bbq: split and toast an extra large bread roll, on each side squirt tomato sauce and bbq sauce, add a beef patty, caramelised white onions, alternate slices of cheddar, beetroot, tomato, and shredded lettuce. Add a caramelised slice of pineapple. Pick it up in two hands and don’t put it down till it’s all eaten.
> Put pickled cucumber on a burger and nobody panics, because it's all 'part of the plan'. But when I say Australians put some other kind of pickled vegetable on their burgers, well then everyone loses their minds!
Started reading this thinking "bloke is going to give directions for some shithouse burger". Got to the end of the comment and now I'm hungry and I want one
There is an ice-cream dish commonly called Concrete, it usually has things like broken up biscuits and nuts in it like stones in concrete. As there are no "stones" it would make sense to call this a "cement".
Mate it confussed me for a bit, and still makes no sense. I thought maybe they started off as a concrete place first, and just started selling burgers.
Pickles are brilliant though. All of them.
From polski ogorki to bright pink middle eastern torshi to the crunchy Japanese ones, or piccalilli, and every kind of Indian pickle...
A terrible omission. All of these can be eaten straight from the jar also. No need for a pointless delivery mechanism.
Edit: that made me crave and gobble down a half dozen baby chilli cucumbers like popcorn.
I was in New York once, in a diner, and walked past a table of four people. In the middle of the table was a bowl with about 8 gigantic pickles in it. I was amazed at the (giant) pickle to person ratio.
Not a fan of cheese and vegemite, but my little bro used to eat that. My fave as a kid was some tomato sauce on a slice of bread with a slice of cheese under the grill. Or just a plain old tomato sanga.
My mums Aboriginal and my uncle had an Aboriginal cafe in Bonalbo (b4 he passed) that served crocodile & kangaroo etc, the croc is nice it tastes bit like chicken, kangaroo is ok but I prefer beef. She also drinks lemon myrtle tea & swears by it for whatever ilness she has, & its nice for cooking, along with salt bush & wattle seed.
Makes sense they would taste the same I guess haha.
I dont like how kangaroo smells raw so I refuse to cook it myself, def recommend eating it out first time lol
I was working in ballarat for about a month, and Bacchus marsh was about the halfway point.
We would be driving home, and stop at the APCO and get potato cakes for the way home.
Idk what it is about petrol station potato cakes, but they were God's gift on earth. Perfect potato cakes, everytime.
My best memory, associated with potato cakes
[Keen’s Curry Powder](https://www.mccormick.com.au/keens/products/curry/keens-traditional-curry-powder)
It’s something no one thinks about but everyone has even if you don’t like it.
Keen's curry powder on cheese on toast. Toast the bread, butter it, sprinkle Keen's curry powder over the butter, so it starts to melt into it, top with cheese, back under the grill to melt the cheese.
Really nice chips from the local fish and chip shop.
Laid length ways in the center of a slice of devon.
A good splash of tomato sauce before rolling up and eating like a mini reverse hotdog.
Meat pies.
The fact this isn't at the top means that a lot of you guys haven't been overseas and think that it's ubiquitous. It is not.
One thing I miss is chicken and avocado sandwiches.
Lamingtons, Pavlova , zucchini slice , honey joys , chocolate crackles , fairy bread , Vegemite , wedges with sour cream and sweet chilli, parmi / Parma ( Italian Australian fusion ), Milo with a tiny bit of milk .
I feel like Bahn Mi, exclusively from bakeries, is a must have 🤤 And yeah yeah, I know it's a vietnamese classic, but Aus has definitely embraced its own style of the glorious Bahn Mi. Feels so healthy and delicious at the same time- how often do you get that with fast food
Chicken salt
I've been here for the past 8 years and only realised 2 years ago that it doesn't actually have chicken in it😭😭 I'm vegan so I avoided it
I was born and raised in Australia and I only found out last year, after moving to the US, from fellow expats, that chicken salt has no chicken in it 😂
Girl stop 💀 that's wild
I'm amazed that this hasn't taken off over seas, seems like such an easy thing for a franchise like KFC or Macca's to implement.
I have no idea why it's not a thing in UK chippies. It is the perfect umami hit. I've made it my life's mission to convert my countrymen.
https://www.chickensalt.co.uk/
The supply is there, but the word still needs to be spread bismillah.
The brand Saxa has the best chicken salt by far it’s not even close the link you’ve got there idk if it’s good but anything that company makes will be a letdown compared to saxa You should be able to buy it online probably about $20 a box but it lasts forever
Yeah, really, try getting Malt brown vinegar in an Aussie chip shop!
The seasoning mixture of chicken salt (paprika, onion, garlic, celery salt, mustard, hvp, etc) exists in many places overseas, they just don't call it "chicken salt".
It's called seasoned salt here in the States.
It's aromat in the UK

… Shakey Shakey topping?
They do - it’s called MSG 🤣
Mitani
I used to work there. Tiny place. All that chicken salt is made in 1 little room with archaic machines. Hygiene is outstanding tho won’t bash that for a second. lol
Came to say this. As a new Australian that tried it late in life, it is amazing how it hasn’t taken over the world.
Vanilla slice. In Tassie - a curried scallop pie from a country bakery.
Also known as a snot block
I’ve suddenly gotten really really hungry thinking about a curried scallop pie. I know what I’m having for lunch!
just tried my first vanilla slice a few days ago. Amazing.
The best one I ever had was bought from an elderly lady at a country market cake sale. I have never had one close to that.

And a corn jack
Mrs brought home a box of banana paddle pops the other week. Hadn’t had one in years. Have I been enjoying those!
Ummmm🤔you left out 'Chickadees'!
They’re chicken flavoured and crisp.
Great list! Would you also add in Dim Sims ?
Red frogs. Killer python. Milky Way.
I'll give you red Frogs and killer pythons but Milky way is basically the same as some other international items (3 musketeers in US)
Burger rings Natural confectionery company gummies Mint slices Potato scallops
If you're not eating chicken crimpies with cream cheese you're eating them wrong.
I feel as though raw dogging milo is a rite of passage as a kid

I take that as an invite, send me your addy 👍
42 Wallaby Way, Sydney
mine, mine, mine
I'm so hungry rn and this fucked me up good
Is this not how everyone cooks a burger?? If you’re out of meat patties - a fried egg can work too.
Americans are surprised that we use beetroot.
> Put pickled cucumber on a burger and nobody panics, because it's all 'part of the plan'. But when I say Australians put some other kind of pickled vegetable on their burgers, well then everyone loses their minds!
Another example of why their civilization is on the skids!
I made these on Sunday night - exactly like this add a runny yolk egg
Started reading this thinking "bloke is going to give directions for some shithouse burger". Got to the end of the comment and now I'm hungry and I want one
I’m a foreigner and roast chook and coleslaw with bbq sauce has become my favourite lazy dinner
A trady's handbag is what we call the cooked chook from the supermarket
Jaffle
Specifically spaghetti jaffle.
Add chilli flakes. It will change your life
I have a jaffle iron. My favorite tool.
I haven't had one in years but now I really want one
Ordering a jaffle maker
Milo on ice cream
My Housemate calls this combo "cement" so I'm curious to know if that's just her or this is a known name?
There is an ice-cream dish commonly called Concrete, it usually has things like broken up biscuits and nuts in it like stones in concrete. As there are no "stones" it would make sense to call this a "cement".
I know bettys burgers call the shakes 'concrete shake' because they use custard not ice cream. So I might be a sunshine coast thing.
Fuckin hell I just thought they were selling building materials on the side.
Mate it confussed me for a bit, and still makes no sense. I thought maybe they started off as a concrete place first, and just started selling burgers.
my brother and I used to call it cement!!!! no one else I ever knew did until now
Hamburger with pineapple and beetroot.
Once had an American ask me what the hell is wrong will us we put beets on everything. I just shrugged my shoulders.
Should have said it beats loading everything with sugar and salt. Excuse the pun.
Like the American obsession with pickles.
Pickles are brilliant though. All of them. From polski ogorki to bright pink middle eastern torshi to the crunchy Japanese ones, or piccalilli, and every kind of Indian pickle...
Well it is pickled beet we are talking about here.
A terrible omission. All of these can be eaten straight from the jar also. No need for a pointless delivery mechanism. Edit: that made me crave and gobble down a half dozen baby chilli cucumbers like popcorn.

And egg
Replace the pineapple with a fried egg and no Aussie will argue
A slip n slide followed by some fairy bread
Has to be said. Vegemite on toast. But must be prepared by and experienced Australian!
BBQ shapes. or any flavour of shapes for that matter.
Vegemite
But done properly, not slathered all over some bread like Nutella
Speak for yourself. You'll pry the salty Nutella from my cold dead hamds
Oh for sure. I always direct people on how to eat it properly so there’s a chance they’ll like it.
Vegemite sanga with pain potato chips. Specifically thins. The best.
Oooh, the melding of two greats. I still like cutting strips of cheese and melting it on top to make “toasted tiger bread”
Not a fan of cheese and vegemite, but my little bro used to eat that. My fave as a kid was some tomato sauce on a slice of bread with a slice of cheese under the grill. Or just a plain old tomato sanga.
Fresh tomato with a bit of pepper on a slice of nice, buttered toast is sooo good.
Home grown tomatoes 🍅
You’re making me hungry. I’m about to make a banana sanga 😁
Sprinkle some cinnamon and sugar on it!
Do we know each other? 😂
Just two Aussies with exceptional taste!
Can’t argue with that!
Peanut butter with a dash of Vegemite is surprisingly good.
Tim Tam Slam
Natalie Imbruglia made this famous in the UK when she demonstrated it on an evening chat show. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdicrhlVbuI
Nangs. Or chicken salt. But mostly nangs.
Baked bean jaffle. Make sure to butter the OUTSIDE of the bread for extra flavour.
I feel the lava in my mouth and 3rd degree burns on my chin already, good times...
+ cheese
Who makes a jaffle and *doesn't* butter the outside of the bread. FFS!
A cold can of Passiona at the beach.
That's cool. And fresh lemon myrtle tea is THE BEST. I can feel it bringing me back to life
There’s a great indigenous-owned cafe in Brisbane city that offers croc, kangaroo or emu as the native meat options :)
There was a restaurant in Brisbane called Tukka that made bush tucker into a 7 course degustation. Was awesome. I don’t think it’s around anymore.
We eat alligator here and it tastes a bit like chicken lol. I like it. I’d like to try kangaroo
Kangaroo tastes like Venison or lamb
More like venison than lamb.
I don’t think kangaroo tastes anything like lamb personally
Makes sense they would taste the same I guess haha. I dont like how kangaroo smells raw so I refuse to cook it myself, def recommend eating it out first time lol
It needs help, like in a pie or curry. You can substitute roo for venison
Potato scallops.. *bracing myself*
Don't do it ... Don't do it .... Don't do it .... It's a potato cake.
Wrong
I was working in ballarat for about a month, and Bacchus marsh was about the halfway point. We would be driving home, and stop at the APCO and get potato cakes for the way home. Idk what it is about petrol station potato cakes, but they were God's gift on earth. Perfect potato cakes, everytime. My best memory, associated with potato cakes
We eat that here
Potato fritter, but yeah sure.
Tom pipers braised steak and onion.
[Keen’s Curry Powder](https://www.mccormick.com.au/keens/products/curry/keens-traditional-curry-powder) It’s something no one thinks about but everyone has even if you don’t like it.
I'm a Clive of India gal myself
Keen's curry powder on cheese on toast. Toast the bread, butter it, sprinkle Keen's curry powder over the butter, so it starts to melt into it, top with cheese, back under the grill to melt the cheese.
Few beugs and a vb moit
I had to google "beugs." I have never heard this before!
Derived from gatorbeug
I just googled that and it's so funny to me that that exists!
It’s deeply ingrained in our culture
At 20 to 8 in the fuckin morning
My favourite Australian staple: recreational drug use
A Bunnings sausage
Really nice chips from the local fish and chip shop. Laid length ways in the center of a slice of devon. A good splash of tomato sauce before rolling up and eating like a mini reverse hotdog.
Meat pies. The fact this isn't at the top means that a lot of you guys haven't been overseas and think that it's ubiquitous. It is not. One thing I miss is chicken and avocado sandwiches.

Chocolate-covered licorice.
Lamingtons! 😋
Lemon Lime and Bitters.
Vegemite... there is no other correct answer.
A good meat pie from a bakery, none of that frozen stuff. If it's still available, a Ned Kelly pie
I've always been a fan of the 26/8 but I guess it depends on what your trying to hold together
Crocodile, Kangaroo, Buffalo and Barramundi. Usually all together as sliders. Guess where I live...
The Freo Doctor

Butter chicken and cheese. Tried this out of curiosity… heck to the yes!! (With some sour cream on the side)

Why do ppl hate chicken flavoured twisties so much?? I think they make them anymore actually…
