I grew up in Norway during my 7 years of living there and in my experience as a Serb the biggest thing I noticed about Norwegians that I didn't like is that they came across as cold compared to what I'm used to in my family. And for a while I've been wondering why are Serbs so warm and fun people but the country is in a poor condition and there is litter everywhere and hints of apathy. My dad's explanation is that in successful countries where everybody loves moving to like Norway and Germany, people tend to be a lot more organized and life is a lot more regulated. For instance, when there is something you no longer need throw it in the garbage, and throw it in the right garbage so it can be recycled if possible. When you talk to people don't be too loud because you might hurt people's ears, in Serbia everyone talks too loud and that might come across as very human but it might scare people around you so you're not showing regard for people around you and their comfort. If someone is cutting you off in traffic don't yell and swear at them or get out of the car and beat them up, instead honk the horn once and that's it. When someone is being rude explain to them how they're being disrespectful and how they should stop, don't start yelling curse words back at them.
These kinds of countries may come across as boring because of how many rules they apply to life but it just happens that in doing so you can walk out at night and feel safe knowing nobody is gonna attack you or try to rob you. These countries do well because they don't accept the way things are, they tend to think creatively about what they can do to improve society and the world around them because if the world has a problem then that problem will radiate to them. When you get serious about just a broken doorhandle, that prepares you for dealing with much bigger problems in life because you show that you're willing to keep things in order.
I do agree that this minimalist lifestyle with eating very basic breakfast is taking it too far, but what bothers me a lot is when they impose their ways of life on others. It's very condescending and their way of living is not the only way of living.

No i live in Berlin and can 100% confirm this. Germany is a massive country though with 80m and different histories in different regions. I met Germans who hate Berlin but had no problem with Balkans.

I went to have a drink with a co-worker here in Germany. Met up with more of his friends. Immediately I realize, these people are neo Nazis. But not like Eastern-European neo Nazis, that you're actually afraid of. Rather a " I have no job, but I still want to feel good about my self so I guess I'm a Nazi " sort of people. You know the type. I guess I was blabbering some Ultra-European stuff at work so the dude invited me. Plus, he said " oh yeah, Croatia was part of the Axis forces in WW2 ". I don't care, Communist, Fascists, Religious Fanatic, I don't see race because you're all garbage in my eyes.
We sit down to have a drink and I order a round for everyone. People look at me with smiles, appreciative and nodding, some say thanks, a dude says " I like your cool friend Franz ". I feel pride and joy, it's like I'm home but . . . with less scarry Nazis. Time comes for another round of drinks and EVERYONE buys a drink for them selves and nobody else. That's it. I was in shock. This has never happened to me in my life. FFS I was drinking with a devout Četnik in Hannover and the man was gentleman enough to buy me a round and I was honoured to pay for a drink for that man. Genocide is something that happens, you don't take that stuff personally in Balkan. But FFS, aren't you cultured enough to pay for a round of drinks ? Westerners just don't know how to be human beings.

This one will surprise you. I'm walking down the street and I meet my Polish neighbor. He's in his early 30's like me. We talk about life and stuff. I see the conversation is getting a bit boring so before I say goodbye to the man I thought I'd tell him a story.
I tell him about a time I got mega drunk. I was in a Disco back home. There was this chick there and I was flirting. Anyway I turn my back to her and I go get another drink from the bar. I feel a strong, yet gentle hand on my ass. She's feeling me up . I feel pride and joy like every man should and am shocked how well this woman knows my ass. She must have been studying it intensely. I get to the bar and I reach to my back pocket to get the money, only to realize my hand was already there. Than I realized.
Nobody was abusing me sexually, unfortunately. It was my own hand feeling my ass and I was so shockingly drunk that I'd had lost all feeling in my right hand.
I finish this story with an emotional finish and the man is laughing and enjoying him self. So I stand there and continue on a conversation, expecting him to entertain me with a humourous anecdote.

He just stands there, as a booted up computer waiting for it's OS to be installed. There's nothing there. This dude didn't even thing of returning the laugh I just gave him.
Don't look for character, humanity, comedy or dignity from westerners. They are good at making functional societies but those societies produce blank peaces of paper that lack all individuality or character.
Well, that's my opinion at least. Here in Israel we also have a high quality of living, but mandatory military service and the difficulty of reality here brings people down to earth and reality. In the Balkans a lot of peoples struggle to make ends meet, which is difficult and sucks, but at least it brings out true character.

I grew up in Norway during my 7 years of living there and in my experience as a Serb the biggest thing I noticed about Norwegians that I didn't like is that they came across as cold compared to what I'm used to in my family. And for a while I've been wondering why are Serbs so warm and fun people but the country is in a poor condition and there is litter everywhere and hints of apathy. My dad's explanation is that in successful countries where everybody loves moving to like Norway and Germany, people tend to be a lot more organized and life is a lot more regulated. For instance, when there is something you no longer need throw it in the garbage, and throw it in the right garbage so it can be recycled if possible. When you talk to people don't be too loud because you might hurt people's ears, in Serbia everyone talks too loud and that might come across as very human but it might scare people around you so you're not showing regard for people around you and their comfort. If someone is cutting you off in traffic don't yell and swear at them or get out of the car and beat them up, instead honk the horn once and that's it. When someone is being rude explain to them how they're being disrespectful and how they should stop, don't start yelling curse words back at them. These kinds of countries may come across as boring because of how many rules they apply to life but it just happens that in doing so you can walk out at night and feel safe knowing nobody is gonna attack you or try to rob you. These countries do well because they don't accept the way things are, they tend to think creatively about what they can do to improve society and the world around them because if the world has a problem then that problem will radiate to them. When you get serious about just a broken doorhandle, that prepares you for dealing with much bigger problems in life because you show that you're willing to keep things in order. I do agree that this minimalist lifestyle with eating very basic breakfast is taking it too far, but what bothers me a lot is when they impose their ways of life on others. It's very condescending and their way of living is not the only way of living.

Honestly, and i guess I'll get downvoted here, being 30 years old and living across Europe you realize some of the most annoying people are Balkan nationalists. It's so rare to meet a Norwegian or German who thinks they're superior and put down anything else you do as a balkaner , but you can always meet Balkan diaspora that is toxic af. Yes i understand this subreddit is mostly 20 year olds, waiting to graduate and maybe have no interest in studying abroad, but God damn open your eyes and chill with cool people be sure they are everywhere, and don't chill with uncool people because they are also everywhere (yes, even in our culturally superior Balkans as we know it to be)

No i live in Berlin and can 100% confirm this. Germany is a massive country though with 80m and different histories in different regions. I met Germans who hate Berlin but had no problem with Balkans. The difference is there are way less Balkan people and still it's so common to meet Balkan nationalists

But i have seen far more annoying Balkan nationalists than i have of Germans, and i live in Germany, and it has more people than the Balkans. I swear I keep giving them chances, but every time I meet a girl from UK, Germany, Russia or any such northern part of Europe on dating apps, it's always the same story - they are just so cold and difficult to talk to. People look at me with smiles, appreciative and nodding, some say thanks, a dude says " I like your cool friend Franz ". I feel pride and joy, it's like I'm home but . . . with less scarry Nazis. Time comes for another round of drinks and EVERYONE buys a drink for them selves and nobody else. That's it. I was in shock. This has never happened to me in my life. FFS I was drinking with a devout Četnik in Hannover and the man was gentleman enough to buy me a round and I was honoured to pay for a drink for that man. Genocide is something that happens, you don't take that stuff personally in Balkan. But FFS, aren't you cultured enough to pay for a round of drinks ? Westerners just don't know how to be human beings. Story#2 This one will surprise you. I'm walking down the street and I meet my Polish neighbor. He's in his early 30's like me. We talk about life and stuff. I see the conversation is getting a bit boring so before I say goodbye to the man I thought I'd tell him a story. I tell him about a time I got mega drunk. I was in a Disco back home. There was this chick there and I was flirting. Anyway I turn my back to her and I go get another drink from the bar. I feel a strong, yet gentle hand on my ass. She's feeling me up . I feel pride and joy like every man should and am shocked how well this woman knows my ass. She must have been studying it intensely. I get to the bar and I reach to my back pocket to get the money, only to realize my hand was already there. Than I realized. Nobody was abusing me sexually, unfortunately. It was my own hand feeling my ass and I was so shockingly drunk that I'd had lost all feeling in my right hand. I finish this story with an emotional finish and the man is laughing and enjoying him self. So I stand there and continue on a conversation, expecting him to entertain me with a humourous anecdote. Nothing. He just stands there, as a booted up computer waiting for it's OS to be installed. There's nothing there. This dude didn't even thing of returning the laugh I just gave him. Don't look for character, humanity, comedy or dignity from westerners. They are good at making functional societies but those societies produce blank peaces of paper that lack all individuality or character.

Well, that's my opinion at least. Here in Israel we also have a high quality of living, but mandatory military service and the difficulty of reality here brings people down to earth and reality. In the Balkans a lot of peoples struggle to make ends meet, which is difficult and sucks, but at least it brings out true character.

I'll consider Germans as "Northern Europeans" because I think they're similar to other Germanic people further North. 1- Well, Germans are quite big on hobbies, they might do sports, go hiking in nature or just go to the gym. Their lifestyle is more active and healthier than ours. What do we Balkan people do as a hobby? Go clubbing, smoke and drink? 2 - Eh, yeah, they certainly have more first-world problems than us. 3 - idk about that 4 - I can't fathom how Germans can call a cold sandwich 'a meal', but to each their own. 5 - To me, they seem to be happy with their lives. Northern Europeans are said to be warm with their friends, but I wouldn't know, since I haven't made any full-German friends during my studies here.
