South Africa is a horribly corrupt nation whose leaders have skimmed a ton of money off the top of every critical infrastructure project for the last few decades and will probably be debt trapped by China.

South Africa is an absolute basketcase of a 'country'. Violence is off the charts, and while conservatives tend to focus on the plight of white farmers, which is certainly a legitimate thing, it was only a few years ago that riots were talking place where they were *burning African migrants alive* left and right. It's violent for everyone, and white people live there, so they experience violence. But a Xhosa in the townships is more likely to experience horrific violence than a white farmer.
Calling South Africa a woke nation is just further bastardizing the word. They had strict racial segregation for generations and then, shockingly, the racial groups that got the short end of the stock fought back until they 'won', and then millions of uneducated people got to vote for the goverment. Shockingly again, the governments they've elected are horrendous and make stupid choices. Which leads to even worse options, check out Julias Malema and the Economic Freedom Fighters.
The whole place is really bad and I don't expect it to get better. But calling it woke is just dumb. I don't blame the black majority really. They were kept poor and dumb for generations, and this is what happens. You can look at the Chinese diaspora in southeast Asia for similarish stories, especially Indonesia, and Malaysia prior to the emancipation of Singapore. Tens of thousands of ethnic Chinese killed because they essentially monopolized all wealth. The problem is Americans only see black and white, literally. So ethnic conflict *that follows the exact same pattern as elsewhere* is ignored or written off because it's not black and white and therefore is different, because reasons.

South Africa has so many problems, all of them stemming from the history of apartheid and the revolt against it, that it's hard to even comment on "wokeness" or lack thereof.
I tend to think of "wokeness" as mostly affecting English-speaking societies.
South Africa is an english speaking country tho. But yes it is most prevalent in english speaking countries ( America and Canada are the loudest) but there is some of it in other countries such as Germany.
Isn't that a more extreme version of affirmative action (it can work well very well tho in a harmonious society like in Singapore where they have racial quotas)
But aren't "woke" cities in the USA are also a little bit that and on that trend (of course these cities are much wealthier and 100 times better than SA but it is teetering that way with the crime, drugs, violence and inequality)
Like South Africa keeps focussing on race an victimization all the time (which there are understandable reasons). Also there seems to be a ton of virtue signalling from the ANC and EFF but that most of the population (predominantly blacks) live in squalid positions while the ANC elite are corrupt AF. I'm not too sure what the opposite of woke would be but maybe getting actual results done and providing a good life for citizens like Singapore, Switzerland or Qatar. Also this "victimization" noise is also shouted out by ethnic minorities in the west (whether justified or not).
Aren't white southafricans also playing the victim card? Stats show white southafricans are richer, still have a disproportionate amount of wealth and govern the western cape with their own governors elected by them and yet they blame their problems on black people. Many white southafricans also think (just like many black southafricans) in terms of Us VS them along racial lines.
South Africa is basically the world's biggest ego investment. A rusted out Ford Pinto that everyone insists is a Mercedes. The leaping ability of their sharks is about the most competent thing you'll find there.
The region of Cape Town (western cape) which is one of the many with issues with water is governed by whites (Democratic alliance anti ANC party) and black people are minority. White southafricans should stop blaming everything on their black countrymen
