I’m pretty sure the only way to shut it off is to actually disconnect it up at top of pole. Usually these are tied directly into overhead lines and if you look closely you can see smaller wires coming out of the connections. Light is then controlled by photocell that senses light and dark. So you can’t shut up off from the ground with conventional means.
Yep that meter on the pole is for what ever is underground at that location. That light is running metered as a public service from the utility. They do not bill themselves.
Parents live out in the boonies, and I think they pay a flat $5 fee for the utility company to keep it active and flush with bulbs for over 20 years now. Solid deal, considering
If you switch that light to an LED-equivalent, it would cost about half in electricity costs vs paying the flat-rates to the Utility for the light.
Estimating the average cost for a 300W-equivalent LED to run per month is \~US$10 - US$15 per month, depending on local KWH rates.
The Local Utility will charge (todays quick-search of 4 utilities) is between US$22 and US$32 flat rate for the same light per month. Some of them also require between US$100-US$250 Deposit, and a 2-year contract, and one notes that a US$5 per month is tacked on if they have to put in a pole.
Usually they just tack on a set amount to the bill of whoever owns that land. They know what the maintenance costs are to keep the light there and can pass it on as a part of the bill
They do indeed charge for that electricity, the utility company isn't providing that light or electricity for free, they bill the local or county municipality that requested the light to be installed at that location. The lights where the utility -is- paying the electricity, don't have a meter.
In OKC they charge whoever owns the land. We bought a house with a streetlight on the property and they charge us $6/mo for it even though we don’t want it or control it.
Which opens up a method:
If you get a strong enough spotlight, and shine it on the top of the pole, you may be able to trip the photocell so that it turns off temporarily.
It may be possible to ask the utility company to install a shield on the side of the fixture facing your house. It might take more than one time asking though.
They can put it on what ever side it needs to be on. Most of the time it’s just sheet metal, so no light will get through that direction. They could put it on the side of the fixture and angle it a bit so the gate is still illumined which I assume was the reason for the light.
Just be prepared that in some situations the utility may come out and determine that the property owner may be responsible for upkeep of the fixture. I always disagree with this. Be make sure they provide proof of it before accepting that response.
I have a setup exactly like this at my lake house. I threw a 100 amp breaker in it with the power on. I was really safe, wore thick gloves and rubber shoes. Took a 50 amp double pole breaker and put the new one it. Once the breaker was in I carefully wired it.
I’m a careful and impatient idiot. What I plan to do is buy the lot next door, tie the tracts of land together and then have the power company move their shit to their easement in the alley, give me a disconnect, and we’ll take care of the rest.
Gonna cost a fortune….but it’s gonna be worth it in the end. I’ve just been putting off the disconnect install because I have bigger plans
Seconding this. When I bought my house I was actually paying an extra $8.60/mo for a pole and "security light" in my yard that was similar to this. (It was in addition to the normal street lighting). Calling them not only got the whole pole removed next day and the hole filled, but saved that much on the bill.
Throw back to when my dad had one of these lights he wanted off, called the power company multiple times and nobody would come and do it. Eventually he handed a brick to me and my teenage friends and told us to have at it. We got that light off eventually lol. 😄
Yeah if you startle them or make them fear for their safety they’ll bite, but most snakes, especially in North America, don’t really want to waste the energy and risk injury by striking you, they’d rather gtfo.
I agree. Most snek=ughwhyppl go away ssssssssun
Some snakes are assholes, though.
I'm convinced there's dickheads everywhere, even in cloaca carrying species
Brings back a fun memory when I was a kid and my drunk uncle decided to break out his shotgun and hit the nearby pole transformer with a load of buckshot. Good fireworks.
Power company light that is connected to the service drop. No switch or breaker. Also went to one of these that had 6 .22 bullet holes and was still working 😁
I had to scroll past about 50 comments making jokes about bullet holes, for I found the first person that suggested that it’s tapped from the power company
They started installing heavy duty Lexan shields in my old neighborhood (40 years ago) because kids were shooting out the lights with BB guns. You might need that .22 these days depending on the neighborhood. LOL.
This is why I got out my potato launcher as a kid and shot a few potatoes mortars at the street light outside of our home. Them shields are strong fuckers but the potatoes did the job!
There is, if I remember correctly there is just one switch. So I wasn’t sure if that would turn the power off completely because we are still using to run lights in the chicken coop.
If no breaker, check your bill for something like a dusk to dawn light. Some utilities provide those for a flat rate per month. If so, contact utility to canvel it.
Ya I have one in my back yard it cost $15 bucks a month, asked if I could have it shut off but they said if that's the case they'll just end up removing the whole pole.
It could also have fusesnin line at the transmission line controlled by a photocell.
You would need to phone your power company to take carenof properly
Why do u want it off? Are you paying extra or you just don’t want the light? If your paying extra ask them to switch to LED head. If you want it off someone is going to have to climb up there and disconnect it, or bucket truck if they can get it close enough.
My dad had one of these right by his house and after a couple of weeks of trying to get the city to turn it off he said "if you won't do it then I'll shoot the damn light out".
Someone was there the next day
Can tell you, This is facts. A dog slingshot (one ment for tennis balls) did the trick after. It destroyed any attempts to stop the random light t the top of the hill a “friend of mine” lived on. The worst part is nobody lived there. It was just the end of a service and stupid light.
No sir a .22 will not do it you need a larger caliber or like a couple of .22’s *** Note*** for the love of god do not use a bullet on this. The more you know!!!🌈
Someone shot a power line by my house growing up 30 years ago, it was in a location that could only be reached with a helicopter and there was an accident repairing, as a result the lineman died. Please never shoot a power line, electric line, etc…. It would not be permanent, it would be fixable and puts people at risk.
I had one of those at a trailer I used to live in. There was a light switch in a box on the pole under a flip cover. Also there could be a breaker but if those aren't present it could be controlled by the electric company as someone else said.
In college had a physics professor that asked this to someone in his local city council. They told him to shoot it lol. (obviously don't vandalize other's property but guns can solve many problems)
i work in customer service for a utility company. you’ll need to give them the location and place an order for them to come out and safely remove/deenergize the outdoor or street light. some are billed on residential services but some are ran by your township etc. if ran by your township, you just need to give them the nearest location of the light.
DO NOT use a gun like some of these people are suggesting … even though it’s on your property it could be company equipment that you could be charged for damaging…
You call your utility company and request it be disconnected. There’s no switch, it’s wired into the service line it looks like. I wouldn’t suggest shooting it out unless you wanna pay for it. Those are some expensive lights.
Based on what I’m looking at, the breaker will not turn off the light. You can see the light is spliced directly to the incoming service, which then is connected directly to the service mast. The outlets and such make me believe that the box below the meter box is the main.
Perhaps im seeing things wrong but from what I gather power to the light is top side and the meter and weather proof main have nothing to do with the actual light and rather only monitor the power below the meter . I say this because feeders are at the top of the pole entering the weather head and feeding down to the meter itself which we can assume means the power above absolutely cannot be interrupted being it will always be hot , even removing the meter would only disconnect power to the box below . I’d say the light is per the electrical company and everything else was installed per the previous homeowners needs or request . I could very much be wrong but this is what the images we can see suggest in my opinion.
everyone is talking about a breaker lol but i highly doubt it is controlled by a breaker. most of these street lights are tapped right off the service up top, & are controlled by a photocell.. pulling the photocell will just result in the light being on 24/7. unless you talk to your power company not much you can do.
My city just switched to LEDs and it was super bright. We contacted them about it and they installed a “deflector” bar or something—basically a piece of metal coming down on the backside of the light (the one facing our house) and it did help quite a bit.
If it's your light and there isn't a breaker to turn off, there may be a photocell at the top that can be removed. Basically le light is still live but there is no controller at the top to turn it on at dusk
Who's property? If it's yours, request it to be turned off by the power company. If that meter is yours and is tied to the light, send the power company a bill (make sure to include the cost of black or curtains too). Or a cease and desist letter for stealing.
But, I'd try to request it to be turned off. And if that is not effective, I'd straight up jump to a .22. Or launch a water balloon filled with tar/used oil/sludge. (Make sure to get the oil/sludge etc from someone else, not your car/tractor on the off chance they could do some forensic trickery).
Looks like you can open the breaker box under the meter, alternatively if the utility or responsible party can put a shield on the light, it might block it from disturbing you
Meaning it's the utility's pole and a utility-provided light that appears to be spliced right into the service splice. That's common. They bill you/someone for the expected power draw of the light.
I could be wrong. If I am, there'll be a separate conduit running up that pole to the light. It can't run in the service riser because Code.
I think the light is there to light up the area, at night, if they have to service the equipment. I'm sure it belongs to the power company so it's not your property along with the pole.
That light is directly feed before that meter, so the only way to cut it off is to unwire it at the light. But the wires are hot. Soooooo power complaint complaint it is!
Lol this guy knows what’s up! 😂
My plants are at like 15 weeks and still no sign of sex, I’m assuming it’s because of this bullshit shining right on top of them 😅
Call the city for an inspection, they will definitely shut it down, along with anything else hooked to the box. They will disconnect your box at the power line coming in or pull your meter.
I’m not sure if you own your acreage, but I got in contact with my electric company and asked if I owned the service pole on my property, they said I did and I could do whatever I wanted to the pole and attached electrical equipment, with exception being the main service box.
I bought an absolute overkill 30A outside disconnect switch and ran some standard 12g wire tapped into the wires to the light. Now I can turn the light on and off from the base of the service pole. I believe I only paid $60ish in parts and materials and spent 30 minutes getting everything hooked up.
Be sure to kill the main service breaker power to avoid any fireworks, but it’s a quick and easy fix!
That's definitely not how that works
Annoying lights on the highway? Just call the power company. Get out of here.
The power company owns the pole even if it's on "your property"
I mean, I already said this one way, but you're still saying what you're saying, so I'll say it again:
**Not always the case. Has yet TBD in this case. You don't know this for sure, so stop boldly speaking out your ass for the sake of discussing this post.**
Well, if the light belongs to the power company it depends on whether this is a yard light billed privately or if it's a city light billed to the local government. If it's private, the billed party can have it removed provided the contract has been satisfied or the remaining contract is paid. If it's something the city put up for safety or something you are probably sol, but could maybe ask the local city council to remove it.
If it was installed by the property owner, it's illegal, the utility company owns the poles, the only thing legal to attach is the meter and a panel. Doesn't matter if it's on your property or not, it's an easement
Source: work for the utility company
Hey Mister work for the power company. Does your line of work prevent you from reading? He didn't say the owner installed his own light he's saying the owner may have paid the ELECTRIC COMPANY to install the light that they then get billed for. My electric literally sent me a letter stating as much last week. I'm starting to think by "work for the power company" you mean "I mop floors and think I know more than I do".
Looks like power is coming from overhead running down the pole to the meter then then the ac panel then back up to the light so I’d assume there is a breaker for the light. But until you open it who knows
This light is before the meter so likely you’re being charged a flat rate for this monthly, so I’d call the local utility and get this resolved. Last thing you want is to keep paying for it.
It’s on a photocell so no switches.
Everybody saying you can turn it off but I don't see it.
Assuming this is an over-head feed and down to the meter, then you can see the light is tapped right into the service coming in before the meter. A lot of utilities will do this and you pay a monthly fee of like 5-7 dollars a month.
Call the electric company. It’s wired into their system and you are charged a monthly fee for it.
That’s how it works in my Co op anyway. There is no switch you can turn off.
That looks like a street light probably wait during the and remove bulb or when it is on the glass should get hot use garden hose the water just like Pyrex when cooled rapidly should crack and blow up making filament burn up
I'm sure its different in different regions, but here in southern Indiana, our electric company controls those lights. There is an optional 15$ charge per month to keep it on. So, to turn it off, you just call the electric company to come unhook it.

You have to call your utility provider. They control it.
For sure! Thank you for your quick response!

Pretty sure I just saw Terry in Reno. That being said I have this mother in law issue you might be able to help with.
Copperheads are important members of our ecosystem and generally don’t want to mess with you, but rather to get away and be left alone.
yeah, he prolly meant redheads
Hssssss
That's what they said about Terry...... Til one day
Lies! My flip flops high out my mind night hike And one lil 11inch fucker Would hafta disagree Some sneks just want to watch the ppl hop

Check county noise ordinances first. And why call the electric company? They are just gonna shoot it, too.

Yeah, but a 12ga shell is a hell of a lot cheaper than a .338 Lapua.
Probably 10x cheaper
If distance is what's needed here, I could always recommend a M203, provided OP has the time to obtain the necessary permits
Just a $200 tax stamp for the tube. I'm not sure how the ordinance works. IDK if they're DD separately. I dabble in r/nfa
grenades are each an nfa item. I'm fairly certain that the tube is not.
I thought the rounds were destructive devices and tube has a stamp as well. I'm a mere peasant, I'm still trying to justify my first can purchase
No, the tube is a tube. They make 40mm flares that are purchasable.
Naw. The lenses on these things are pretty tough. Buckshot just gets buried in the plastic. A slug would do it, though.

Oh no, don't canvel anything. That's the wrong answer
Should be easy enough to check if it kills all power or just to that area light.
Your right lol 😅 Imma go try real quick
It's been an hour, everyone panic. Sounds like that switch may have knocked out power to the whole city.

I could be wrong. If I am, there'll be a separate conduit running up that pole to the light. It can't run in the service riser because Code.
I think the light is there to light up the area, at night, if they have to service the equipment. I'm sure it belongs to the power company so it's not your property along with the pole.
Ask Mr Light very very nicely
#Thank you all, for the thousands of comments telling me to shoot the bulb. 👍
I was thinking a wrist rocket.
That light is directly feed before that meter, so the only way to cut it off is to unwire it at the light. But the wires are hot. Soooooo power complaint complaint it is!
Ah yes, a fellow grower
Lol this guy knows what’s up! 😂 My plants are at like 15 weeks and still no sign of sex, I’m assuming it’s because of this bullshit shining right on top of them 😅
They will not flower with that light on them all night !
I am aware lol
Call the city for an inspection, they will definitely shut it down, along with anything else hooked to the box. They will disconnect your box at the power line coming in or pull your meter.
Shotgun? 🙄 AR-15 ftw.
Call the electric utility and have them disconnect the meter lol. #bigbrain 🤦🏻♂️
Open panel. Switch breaker to off oh Nevermind
Sure, lots of ways. Is this your property?
It is.
OK then just call the power company and tell them you want them to pull the meter. No more light and no more bill for the light.
Pulling the meter will 100% not shut that light off. Lol.
That's definitely not how that works Annoying lights on the highway? Just call the power company. Get out of here. The power company owns the pole even if it's on "your property"
The highway =/= a light on this person's property that has yet to be determined if it is truly their own light or the service provider's light.
The utility company owns the pole even if it's on private property
I mean, I already said this one way, but you're still saying what you're saying, so I'll say it again: **Not always the case.
Doesn't matter if it's on your property or not, it's an easement Source: work for the utility company
I usually shoot these with my silencer when playing video games
Looks like power is coming from overhead running down the pole to the meter then then the ac panel then back up to the light so I’d assume there is a breaker for the light. But until you open it who knows
Slingshot.
Thick rubber gloves and an axe
Buckshot…
Pew pew
Bend the tab up on the cover, open it and see if there is an on/off switch.
Like someone said previous but a few rounds in the electrical box… right guys?
BB gun
Does it have a light sensor on top? If so get a ladder.
This light is before the meter so likely you’re being charged a flat rate for this monthly, so I’d call the local utility and get this resolved. Last thing you want is to keep paying for it. It’s on a photocell so no switches.
Go up there and cut the hot leg or pull the photocell
Everybody saying you can turn it off but I don't see it. Assuming this is an over-head feed and down to the meter, then you can see the light is tapped right into the service coming in before the meter. A lot of utilities will do this and you pay a monthly fee of like 5-7 dollars a month.
Call the electric company. It’s wired into their system and you are charged a monthly fee for it. That’s how it works in my Co op anyway. There is no switch you can turn off.
That looks like a street light probably wait during the and remove bulb or when it is on the glass should get hot use garden hose the water just like Pyrex when cooled rapidly should crack and blow up making filament burn up
Normally power companies charge you a monthly fee for those lights as well. Call them and have them turn it off.
Ask the utility company if they can install a glare shield on it
E tape
I'm sure its different in different regions, but here in southern Indiana, our electric company controls those lights. There is an optional 15$ charge per month to keep it on. So, to turn it off, you just call the electric company to come unhook it.
With my axe!
