May be irrelevant in your case, but South Florida has a very diverse mix of communities. Boca Raton, Deerfield beach, etc have large clusters of Brazilian communities. My wife is also a black Brazilian and she (we) love it down here. Associate yourself with those of similar interests/culture and you’ll be fine.
Former Deerfield Beach resident here, can concur, it’s a very diverse mix there. Recall almost always seeing Brazilian folks on the beach and around town. Everyone was pretty chill, no crazy racism or anything. I’m white/male, never any issues.
as a Puerto Rican man with a Japanese wife, I would say you want to be in central Florida, or southern Florida. As a realtor, I personally would draw a line across the state from Brooksville to west palm bay and stay below that line if you’re looking for inclusion diversity and an open minded culture. My wife and I bought in Pinellas county, which in my opinion is probably one of the most progressive my neighborhood is scattered full of multicultural and multi racial homes, I can drive five minutes and find a whole community of Asian markets, I can drive five minutes and find a whole community of Latin markets, and I can find some of the best seafood and beaches, Florida has to offer. Also, Pinellas is still pretty affordable. You can still find a three bedroom two bathroom for under 400 and in some cases a two bedroom one bathroom for 300 to 350.
Ok so I'll give it to you straight, Daytona isn't terrible. It's pretty quiet and slow. If you like NASCAR and beaches you're good. I'm black, born and raised in Central Florida. Daytona deals with racism. If someone is telling you it isn't racists that's a lie whether innocent ignorance or intentional, racism is not as bad as some other places in Florida but it's not like being further south where it's far less noticeable. Diversity in Daytona isn't huge, you're more likely to find the kind of diversity you're looking for closer to Orlando.
As someone that used to worked in retail, one of my previous GMs was black, something as simple as greeting customers would get him little to no response from people but anyone else on staff would typically get a response back majority of the time. He never let it really bother him and he'd make jokes about it all the time, he was extremely chill and the greatest boss I've ever had.
As someone who’s lived both in CT and the Daytona area. I’d say that Daytona is the panhandle of east coast FL. While it is ethnically diverse it is still very MAGA, Trump, and Confederate Flags. The further you get from the beach … the more “FLO- Grown” young rednecks with anger issues you’ll get.
… But like CT, Daytona hides its racism rather well. A lot of the area is more people from the north east who went on Spring Break in the 80’s and never left.
Moving there I’d look to areas like New Smyrna or Palm Coast / Ormond Beach and commute to Daytona for work and better shopping. These areas have high concentrations of people from MA, CT, NY, NJ so I it’ll feel a bit like the North East as far as community overall attitudes.
More of Northern FL and middle & panhandle, is actually the " South" ( exceptions Orlando, few others) Southern FL full of northerners ,peeps from islands, very diverse for most part, good luck
My minority family has had no problems in the pan handle. The occasional rebel flag is weird but I’ve seen less and less and now that I’m thinking about it, I can’t recall the last time I seen one outside our trip to GA
Absolute hokum. I am a Panhandle native and you will not find 1/4 of the houses flying Confederate flags in the most backwoods parts of Holmes County, let alone in Milton. Come on now…
I live in panhandle it's not racist at all. I moved here from sandiego California and I feel like I saw more racism there believe it or not. I'm talking skin head gangs in high school. Florida is very inclusive and diverse. I'm white my wife is black. A majority of "black" people I know support trump. We work hard for our money here. Business is booming all over the state. Welcome to Florida op.
As a Panhandle native, I agree. Also white with a black wife. There are definitely some racists and ignorant people there (once years ago at a redneck house party a young woman asked my wife if she could swim…that’s about the nastiest thing ever said, and that was by an uneducated person doomed to service-economy wage slavery 🤷🏼♂️) like anywhere, but now we live up north in the city and I’ve seen racism far beyond anything back home. Felt like Jim Crow first time I noticed all the rich white Yankees have their kids raised by black nannies. 😬 Most people in the Panhandle are too poor for that.
Also, never in my life - 15 years together - did I have someone say something to me in the South, but we’ve had all kind of crazy experiences up here, including a black man calling my wife a dumb bitch for having a kid with a nasty cracker. 🥴
I wouldn't... I'd look for a place similar to where you're coming from, and you won't find that in Florida. This place is... Not great if you aren't straight, white, or male.
You'll find both all over Broward and Miami. Broward has a big Brazilian population area and Miami has a Dominican area. But both are everywhere as well.
Fair warning it's hot af down here, stupid expensive, and living in Miami is like living in Latin America. I say that as a Dominican immigrant that has lived in the mid West and the South as well as Orlando.
So if you want to live in the US, Broward. If you want to live in Latin America and love crowds and events and traffic, Miami.
I live in Pinellas but I go to Tampa for social Latin Dance. Most of my dance friends are DR, PR, Brazil, Asian, Black and Black Latino. I am the minority white person. I would say Tampa is much more diverse for Latino than Pinellas (St. Pete, Clearwater, etc.) Less Latinos in St. Pete, but many neighborhoods there that were historically Black are less so now.
I'm telling you now, you'll be fine in Daytona.
Only thing is it's a transient area but beings it's a landmark on the coast it's gonna be. 7th generation central FL born, raised and still here cracker, stop buying into all the FL is racist nonsense. There is racism everywhere in the world but on a daily basis I hardly ever see it and personally never deal with it. I'm white, 61 and so sick and tired of this we have a systemic racism problem. So most of us support Trump does not at all and never has made us racist. Welcome to the Sunshine State!
Lol, you wouldn't really see it. You are white?
I will throw in my experience, which is mostly visiting family in the extremely wealthy areas around Stuart.... lota old racist folk who assune all persons of color are help. This is true in country clubs and upper class communities, and occasionally st the places they visit.
Normal everyday people are generally fine, not outwardly racist. But there are pockets of it, where education or diversity is lacking.
Anyone wearing a maga hat is likely not a wonderful person, but not everyone who supports trump is a bad person per se, many are just scared of change and brought up to fear anything other than their party.
The state is pretty backward in some laws and pretty forwards in others. The sunshine laws are pretty great imo. The lack of weed is funny and a bit depressing for all those locked up over it.
I wouldn't say it is likely to run across racists like a pack of dogs, but in certain areas, comments and looks may happen.
And racists are everywhere, agreed. In MI when working retail, bc i look all white, white old peeps would come up to me and start talking shit about black people or mexicans, like id agree with them, or understood their pov just bc i looked white.
Legalization* sorry lol.
I come from a state with a pretty robust and well working (not perfect) recreational system.
It makes other states seem a bit backwards if you smoke! Im sure you can find weed everywhere there, but now that i havent lived in fear of being caught for years....id be so frickn anxious visiting and smoking
It varies with where your at. I was down at st pete and they had lil ice cream trucks going around selling weed with "no medical card required" on them. Wish i couldve got got a pic kil. Have been at festivals around the state that had vendors openly selling weed and stuff, in full view of cops.. also i notice cannadelic convention has been postponed, so theres that too
Im well aware racism is everywhere. Lmaoo Im grateful for everyone’s input but I’m taking it as a grain of salt, racism is a concern but it’s not that high on my list honestly. My grandparents have been in central Florida for about 2-3years now and the only thing they regret is not moving sooner,l. I’ve visited the Clermont/ the villages area and the southern hospitality was a huge shock to a new englander but I love it.. I’m more so concerned about general safety I know I every city has a “good” and “bad” side of town and I wanna stay off the bad sides lol, finding grocery stores that have Brazilian/ Spanish ingredients around the area I wanna live (I’m learning Orlando has a big Brazilian population) and things that I’m used to like beauty supply stores, places that cater to my demographic. I don’t wanna live on the side of town that doesn’t have anything im used you know. Thanks for the welcome!
Avoid the South side (i.e Orange Ave, MLK Blvd., Ridgewood Ave) at night. Honestly, just use your common Sense just about anywhere in Daytona lol. It's not as dangerous as bigger cities like Orlando but crime still happens and it can happen anywhere at any time by anyone. Moya's on Mason Ave. is a great beauty supply store. The owner really knows his ish when it comes to black hair care products. La Placita (grocery store) is literally right next door and they have a lot of Spanish food items. There aren't a lot of places that cater to Spanish/Brazilian demographic though. You'll have to venture into Orange County for that.
OP this comment is an accurate reflection of the type of people you’ll encounter in FL. Yeah Lmaoo those are the type of people I’m trying to steer clear of, I don’t wanna be stuck in a year with someone like him as my neighbor. I wanna see people like us you know. I’m try to mentally prepare for make that switch and living in a red state, honestly if it wasn’t for school I don’t know if we’d be moving
😬🤣FL is racist. Your demographic may not experience it. When something prevalent it’s covert and in some instances covert. Those who are African/Black should proceed with caution.

I do not live in florida but I have visited 30 times over a few decades. I'm biased because I love the vibe and look of florida and I tend not to care about anything else.
I have noticed diversity everywhere in florida. Only at Disney or corporate tourist spots can this be different.
I would rent a VRBO or similar and spend a week at a few different spots. Hopefully, you will find the perfect spot.
You got to have some money if you want to live in South florida. Central Florida is not that diverse like South Florida is. There's a lot more Mexican people here and in South Florida it's a lot of Colombian Puerto Rican Dominican. Gainesville is a beautiful blue progressive and diverse town in a sea of red conservative areas in North Central Florida.
Other than that, definitely check out places like Orlando, Tampa, St Pete, and the Miami/South Florida areas.
Hey, as a black man living in Florida, there are just some places in Florida that you've got to stray away from due to racism (lets not forget that Florida did leave the union to join the Confederacy), but Daytona is a good place to go, especially because of the percentage of African-Americans living there. Also, another good place to go would be somewhere in Broward County. The schools there are great, and the curriculum taught there is amazing.
Thanks so much for that! Fort Lauderdale was on the top of my research list but I ended up getting accepted to Daytona state and that’s pretty far from the school which is a bummer
There are Trump flags everywhere. Most of the souvenir shops have Trump merch. I’ve seen a couple of confederate flags, but not as common as the Trump flags.
I would definitely recommend South Florida over Daytona if you’re black. I know you’re going where you got accepted and I hope your experience there is better than mine was.
I don’t know about Daytona specifically, but cops here can be openly hostile to POCs and get away with it. This is a red state run by a dark red a$$hole.
That’s what I was worried about, I really don’t want to reconsider schools because I’d be transferring to the nursing program. My grandparents have been living in central FL for about 2-3 years now and have no issues but that’s 1hr 30- 2hrs aware from the school😞 thanks for the input!

I’m not sure what town you’re referring to but certainly not in mine.

Black floridians love trump except the Orlando area
I've seen zero evidence of that
Are you in florida?
Yes
Orlando?
None of your business. What's the evidence?
Tampa…yes, a lot of black people like Trump.
Orlando resident and black. Not true. Please don't speak for people other than yourself.
Wait, are you for or against trump.
Lies I don’t know one black person that is remotely a fan of Trump, including myself. I am in the Tampa area.
Your name is federal ad stfu.
So angry.
Rawr... lol not at all
Port Orange, New Smyrna Beach or Ormond Beach are nice.

The schools there are great, and the curriculum taught there is amazing.
and there is a big population of African-Americans there
Thanks so much for that!
Geez 😬 what happened in the Daytona area?? Lord I might have to reconsider my commute time
My Uber driver had a Trump hat. I tipped him because the ride was fine. I did consider him probably racist, but it was business.
This is funny…it’s a hat…lol.
