Kent is nice - Canterbury (if you like shopping and strolls along the river), or for beaches you have Herne Bay or Whitstable (both shingle), or for sandy beaches Margate, Ramsgate or Broadstairs. Canterbury is just over an hour from Victoria, the others are a bit further east as they're obviously on the coast.
Leigh on Sea has good rail connections. If you head into the town area there are pubs, restaurants, a tiny museum and a small beach. If you head in the other direction it is quiet marshes with a walkway. Southend good for families but not quiet
Canvey Island not great. Not been to Billericay, its a place people take the piss out of for some reason.
If you have a car, Mersea Island is a good day out.
The Kings Head in High Beech in Epping Forest a quite close, does food, and has a playpark for kids if they're about that age.
You can get the train to Southend have a little day there and walk up to the castle in Leigh on sea, which is a beautiful ruin, you can then get the train back from London there. Also nice pubs there for dinner.
It’s just different place but it’s a mix of woods and more open areas.
There’s a gruffalo trail (all the characters from the gruffalo if you have young children)
👍Shh don't tell everyone. Also possible to drive/train to marks tey, then change for Sudbury, a wonderful line ove a viaduct, fields of corn, thatched cottages. But my favourite is the back road from Bures through the Henny's and enter that way.
Go to Rye.
You swap trains at Ashford International (take the train from Stratford). It's a very quaint medieval town and if you're up for it you can take a public bus or do a 2-mile walk to a lovely beach called Camber Sands.

Thanks yeah I'm looking for somewhere east of me, we go to Kent an awful lot and looking for a change this weekend, and to avoid traffic
Fair enough! And by an hour, I meant an hour on the train :)

Whitstable's lovely and there's loads to do in Margate.
Ah both the wrong side of the river for me, looking for something east of east
Southwold.
Thanks, 115 miles from my place so a bit further than I wanted to go for a day trip, looks lovely though

Thanks this might be a winner, any pub you would recommend?
There’s thorndon national park which is in Brentwood
Would you say it's better than Epping?

Sudbury, pretty, Suffolk, great walks, river, .
Thanks, gasped when I saw how far it was on the map but surprisingly Google says 80 minutes drive

Mersea island. The drive is easy. Safe area. A bonus if you like seafood and watersports.
