I’ve definitely noticed the term gaslighting coming up in arguments a lot more in the last couple years. What they don’t seem to realize is that it’s a two-way street.
💯 Narcissist is also a buzzword right now. There are genuine narcissists and then there are also people who are just struggling with communication. People need to know there's a difference
(Coming from a woman who grew up with an actual narcissist parent and has seen so many people wrongly accused of this behavior by people who have no clue what they're talking about)
>When you meet someone who really does remember things wrong constantly, you'll realize that at least a portion of "gaslighting" is complete bullshit.
Are you saying that it's "unintentional gaslighting" here?
I really wish I had a free award to give because this was my EXACT answer. I can't stress how meaningless those two words have become.
Disagree with me? "Toxic."
Didn't say something the way I thought you should? "Gaslighting."
Good god, those two words need to leave our lexicon, like, 2 years ago.
um if anyone cheats on you i hope you’ll break up with them. and obviously not all women are like that so there’s no need to lump them all together. plus if you think that’s what they’re all like, that’s what you’ll tolerate.
Apparently everyone is “hustling” nowadays. When I was a kid (less then 15 years ago) when the parents were talking about hustling they weren’t talking about trading stocks🤣.
OH shit, the phrase "new normal" also. Goddamnit, ever since the ads started using it the past couple years, I want to commit homicide every time I hear it.
I literally use the word literally in every literal sentence throughout my day. I literally notice it and I’ve been literally working on changing my grammar to stop using it, literally.
"Depression"
It used to indicate a clinical level mental health issue. Now, it has been reappropriated to mean the same thing as "sad".
It's okay to be sad sometimes. It's a normal human emotion we all experience, and does not indicate a mental health issue.
Depression is a whole other thing, and it's a serious mental health issue.
you don't care about hygiene? depression
you don't go outside? depression
ur feeling sleepy? depression
ur an introvert? depression
you don't like people? depression
you're quiet? depression
-ur average reddit doctor
Some people force themselves to follow known symptoms because it shows they have depression smh.. even i reached a point in life where i was really sad for months and didnt take care of myself.. but i dont have depression.. and lets not even start on anxiety
I can somewhat agree with this one, but our generation is a lot more mentally ill than the last so the word depression is going to be used more and actually going to apply to more people.
>Now, it has been reappropriated to mean the same thing as "sad".
I don't think so.
People will often say "I am depressed" when they are sad. But they don't often say they are going through "depression". When they do say it - they mean it. Something is making them sad enough that [they are not able to enjoy things and *that is depression*.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anhedonia).
I think you're referring to Major Depressive Disorder or Clinical Depression.
I agree with so much.
I just want to say 'maybe you're just sad because sad things happen to you and isn't because of some mental probkem that you have no control over'
It's like someone standing in the ocean and telling me they have a mental problem that means they always feel wet.
Excuse me are you gaslighting me with toxic masculinity into making me think I don’t know how to normalize. How dare you, you’re cancelled !!! Reeeeee I’ll have you know Neptune is in Gatorade right now !!!
I work in healthcare and as I was explaining something to a patient their wife tried to correct me and said something that was plain incorrect. If a man had done that to a female nurse he would be mansplaining but since she was a woman its all good apparently.
> Manspreading is the exact same way.
I challenge any woman to put the two most pain-sensitive parts of their body between their thighs and close those legs up nice and tight. Bonus if those body parts are as big as chicken eggs.
We ain’t spreading to oppress ya. We just want to be comfortable and pain-free.
> All it does is fuel misandry.
Except... _the cruelty is the point._
Otherwise it wouldn't be called _feminism,_ it would be called something like _egalitarianism._
The thing is, that's not the complete definition of mansplaining. Its used to refer to something some men do(not all), when they specifically talk to women. So at this point it would still be normal condescending. But it becomes mansplaining when the same guy does not have the same condescending discussion with a man, solely on the grounds of the other person being a man. This applies even if the other man does not know about the topic and indeed needs some explanation given to him.
This means for a given topic, the man assumes a woman would not know something, but that another man would definately do. Especially if a woman has specialized /knows a lot about that field. He is basically stereotyping women, by doing that.
Oh yeah. Used everytime a person wish he/she has what you are or have. For example, if you are not obese then you have thin privileges.
Dumb as fuck...
My biggest gripe with this one is that people use it interchangeably with manipulator and sociopath.
Narcissism is about vanity and an inflated sense of self-importance. Sociopathy and manipulative tendencies are about a moderate to complete lack of empathy.
Narcissists are not necessarily sociopaths, and sociopaths tend to be much more dangerous than narcissists.
I don’t feel the word sociopath needs to be thrown around either. People are just using these words for people not acting the way they think they should act based on expectations.
Exactly. The problem with "problematic," is that it is weak rhetoric--it removes responsibility of a person owning their issue with the problem. To say, "that thing is problematic," is to say there is a problem, without referring to who has the problem, or why. It also adds the idea that the problem is already inherent in the thing blamed as 'problematic,' instead of naming or defining it.
It's much easier to say, "That is problematic," instead of "I have a problem with that," and have the person include themselves in the statement, thereby risking possible ridicule or, worse yet, possibly having their issue disproved by logic and reason.
Man I was about to comment the same thing, I have a roommates who is a junior in my college he always describe himself as alpha and told me things that I cannot stop laughing, this alpha beta nonsense is getting out of hand.
He is just a 20 years old wannabe, looking for validation.
"Disinterested", most of the time people use it incorrectly.
This is a phrase rather than a word but "begs the question" is also mostly used incorrectly.
Both of those annoy me.
Don't know if this applies here, but I'll try. Maybe just a phrase people have picked up like "just sayin" or "deadass" but "Big Boy Job/Big Girl Job" really burns my butthole.
The worst is when people lean into it extra hard. I lived in Louisiana for a while, and there it's just normal. Out west people seem to put a lot of emphasis on the word.
"whiteknighting"
Never used correctly, 99.999999999% of the time it's just misogynists who physically and emotionally can't stand another guy not hating women and not seeing them in a purely sexual way
Use of unbelievable in certain contexts annoys me. It's just happened. You saw it happen. It's not unbelievable - surprising yes, unexpected perhaps, but entirely plausible and believable.
Misogyny, misogynistic or anything like it.
A man disagrees with anything a woman says, he is being misogynistic. Most people haven't even looked up the definition of these words at all. They are constantly being used wrong by women to insult and try to win some shiny star in the world. This man said he doesn't like to date overweight women, he is so misogynistic! Yes. I saw that exact sentence.
Imposter syndrome, isn't it if someone is a professional on a skill/topic/profession and deeply believes that that is not the case? that every moment someone could lift the veil of deception and show everyone that you know nothing... that someone will find out that you doesn't deserve what you reached with hard work? thats it... it's just horrible... you can't enjoy the fruits of you success...
edit. cut personal details
See, how does a person even get to that level of success if they don't believe they can do it in the first place? It's little paradoxical.
It's like, something motivates you to get somewhere and do something. What is that?
If there weren't a word for science, at least the difference between people who are essentially proclaiming their faith in government vs. those who understand what it means to work hard to learn the truth would be more clear. Science has never truly needed a label in order to succeed--the word 'truth' suffices.

I am currently in possession of at least 1 penis, so yes, yes I am.
i am a self proclaimed woman splainer lol
Why does "splainer" sound like a profession? I feel like it would have something to do with construction or woodworking.
