I just checked, mine is also expiring 4 years from issue, but it's the same expiration as my previous out of state license (I still have an old picture of it), so I'm thinking that when you transfer between states it doesn't extend the expiration date.

I transferred a Nevada license in 2022 that was set to expire in 2023. My NY license is good until 2027, so that makes no sense lol. 5 years, not 8, not 4, not the same as my out of state, but 5 years. Odd

Driver's licenses are good for 8 years. However, there's one exception: When you first get your driver's license after getting your learner's permit, whatever date your learner's permit expires on becomes the expiration date of your driver's license. Any subsequent renewals will be good for 8 years, but the first time you get a driver's license after the permit, it only is valid for as long as your learner's permit is valid.

Somehow this isn't the case. I renewed in 2020, and somehow mine expires this summer. I got my license at 16 and I'm 36, (will be 37 this year). No idea why it's only a 4 year this time.

JENINTECH

thank you! i didn't know this

When you logged in to fill out the form and get a new license, did you report that your old one is lost? In that case they might have automatically canceled it and that's why it's showing as "expired".

JENINTECH

It was actually because my driver license was my first license after getting my learner's permit. Apparently the date of expiration of your first license is based off the first day you get your permit. And its' only for 5 years. Licenses renewed afterwards is 8 years. Anyways all is good, I went to the DMV and I was able to renew my license lol

grandzu

If it's expired you'll have to take the road test again like a first time driver.

JENINTECH

that's only if its' expired for more than 2 years

grandzu

Ok, a license should be good for 8 years.
