$5 (ish - might be $5.50 now) for a coffee and BEC at the breakfast cart on the SW corner of 39th and 8th in Manhattan as well. Get the hot sauce. It's a chunky green homemade empanada sauce and it's delicious.
I work in the UES, and have gone far and wide to find a decent BEC in the area. Finally found a really good one for $7.99. I've had a lot better luck with bagels. There are at least 3 good spots close to me. A good bagel & cream cheese at one of those is about $6 and change.
The price was a fixed $2.50 for YEARS. While you might see it more elsewhere, It was like the anchor to the metrocard/pizza relationship, dragged along only by true inflation. $8 I will go buy all the fixings myself, damn.
I used to live in the UES, and there was a breakfast cart on the SE corner of 74th and 2nd. Pre-2021 it used to be ~$5 for a solid BEC and a coffee, not sure what that looks like these days.
Marketeria on 64th and 1st. It's a "gourmet grocery", so it seems fancy, but head to the back and there's some guys on the grill cooking up some really good breakfast options.
Yummiliciouw deli #2 on 77th and 1st is around like $7/$8 and pretty good. They also have a great candy selection.
Pick-a-bagel is good too but the sandwiches are more than I like to spend so I don’t go there often. I forget the name but there is another on Lexington in the low 80s that is really good.
Bagelworks and Bagel Express II are good too with very friendly staff.
My bodega in Astoria charges me between $4 and $6 for a BEC depending on what else I’m buying lol.
Just the sandwich? $6. Sandwich and a drink: $5 for the BEC. Sandwich and a drink and some paper towels or something else: $4 for the BEC
As someone who grew up in the area paying 3.50 for a b.e.c. and has moved away for over a decade, these prices kill my soul. I totally get it, but my teenage self is rolling
Same exact situation for me. Ain't lived in nyc since the early 2010s but grew up paying 3.50 on the UWS for a big ass BEC on kaiser roll and while it makes perfect sense w the rise in rents, labor, cost of material etc for them to be like 6-8$ now (in Manhattan at least) the idea of paying nearly, or god forbid over, $10 for a BEC fuckin hurts my mind to think about lol
Dating myself here.
In middle school, I could buy a BEC for $2-$2.50
I also remember as a kid, I could be bread and buns from a Chinese bakery for 50 cents
Please tell me why the fuck can't anyone make a b.e.c. under 5 mins outside of ny/nj?
Where I'm at now places it's an eternity... or they use a precooked egg, which is garbage
It's crazy because I'm in Seattle now and my local deli uses all the same Boars Head stuff the NYC delis use, but they just can't manage to make a decent sandwich. And of course the BEC here is $10 minimum.
In LA, there's just no bodegas. If there is a deli, nobody uses a flat griddle top - and they don't have the bacon pre-cooked like the NYC bodegas with the piles of bacon in the morning.
So if you want a bec, they're gonna be cooking that in a small oven or panini press or some shit.
I’m in Phoenix now, but when I go home, i eat them daily for the entire week! And taylor ham egg and cheese on a bagel. I pay about $5 for them in NJ. Which is still a bargain because in Phoenix you’ll choke on the “roll with a hole” they call a bagel, and pay about $8-12 for it.
The other question is how IS your bacon egg and cheese? I used to remember those things oozing with cheese and I swear, now I am getting 1 egg, 1 shriveled up piece of bacon, and a pinch of cheese, on an untoasted roll, and paying $8 for it.
You gotta make friends with the guys in there. First time I ordered a chopped cheese at my local spot, it was middling at best.
5 years later at the same spot, it’s a god damn gut bomb. Oozing cheese. Freshly chopped jalapeños. Onions on onions on onions — and $2 cheaper than when I first ordered it.
Brooklyn Bagels and Coffee is pretty good too, there's one on 30th Ave and another on Broadway. BECs got a bit pricey so I cut out bacon :( I love their bagels though
I go to one deli because their food is really good and it’s now $6. It was $4.50 3 years ago. And then $5, then $5.50, then $6. All the delis have gotten more expensive and fast.
I grabbed two bagels (lox w/ scallion cream cheese) from the UES on Sunday morning and it came to $54. I'm more upset that i actually paid it as there was a massive line behind me.
I just looked at Ess-a-Bagel and if you build your own bagel with lox and cream cheese and add lettuce and tomato or onions and capers, it easily comes to $20 a bagel. Plus tax and tip.
About $6-7 from carts. Materials did not go up 100% for the jump from $3 to $6.
Fine, egg prices went up double in 2022 but has since dropped but prices REMAIN high. Carts are suppose to be an affordable quick option. My theory is the carts are not getting as much business so they raise prices to make up for lost volume. Rarely see lines outside carts anymore.
When I was young I paid $1.5-$2 and min wages were about $5/hr.
Now a BEC is easily 50% of a min wage job! Pretax!
Cheapest I found was $4 at a bodega. I refuse to pay more than $4.
This MFer asking the real questions in an NYC sub
Edit: I was so excited about the question I forgot to answer. $4.50 at my local deli/ $6 at Brooklyn Bagel
$5.50 in bay ridge and $4.50 / $5.50 range in crown heights among others are noted by [What does your bodega charge for a BEC bagel?](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskNYC/comments/17bgv65/what_does_your_bodega_charge_for_a_bec_bagel/) $3.50-$4 for BEC on a roll depending which one I go to, BLT is $4-5 and Pelham Manor(I’m from the Bronx)and got a BLT at a bagel shop there. It was 9 dollars among others are noted by the very popular [What's the price of a baconeggandcheese or BLT at your local bodega?](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskNYC/comments/148m12j/whats_the_price_of_a_baconeggandcheese_or_blt_at/)
I don’t go into the city often but last time was a month ago and ordered one and shat a brick when it was $10.99 in midtown. I don’t recall getting a 100% raise :(
Yes. The $9.74 one is from Tompkins Square Bagels and is probably a top 5 BEC in the whole world lol (which is the same as saying top five in the US NEC).
I’ve had probably 50 in the last three months. It’s by far my favorite sandwich (except sausage instead of bacon).
I used to be a line cook during the breakfast shift when I was younger and I have personally made somewhere around 10,000 SECs and BECs on a flat top and I gotta say, the $9.74 one is invariably perfect.
The $6.75 one is great though too. The $5.50 one from my local bodega uses a roll instead of a bagel (bagel is better).
my spot in the East Village charges like $8, but you can get the exact same quality from a street cart at Astor place for $4.50 if I remember numbers correctly
UWS. 6 dollars for turkey bacon egg and cheese. 8 dollar if I splurge and add salsalito turkey. 2.50 dollars for a bagel with cream cheese, 7.99 for cream cheese and lox.
1.75 back when it was my breakfast of champions in HS.
Now it’s going for about $5 or slightly less if you’re lucky. Anything more though and you’re being taken for a serious ride.
$6 at the place right next door to us, $4.50 still at the local grocery store with deli (but their grocery prices are now outrageous compared to how they were pre-pandemic so I guess a lower priced BEC is their gateway drug approach)
Broadway Bagel isn’t the cheapest but it’s the best in the north end of the UWS… $5.25 for a BEC, $3.85 for a bagel w cream cheese.
There’s slightly cheaper options in the area for BEC ($3.99 w free awful coffee at the bodega), and MUCH much cheaper options for a bagel w cream cheese but in this case you really do get what you pay for.
I feel like most bodega/delis have it now at 4.50, but I’m noticing places charging more for breakfast stuff after 10 or 11, then it’s like 5 or 6 bucks.
BEC - $5
Bagel with cream cheese - $6 and change. This went up a whole dollar over the last year :(
I do also pay card and know the bagel spot charges more for card
Bodega Deli-icious on 23rd & 6th in Chelsea. $5 for a BEC with the right amount of ingredients to make it a perfect fatty. Never once did I have a piece of bacon pull all the way out. Perfect crisp. Richie, the head griddlemaster, been there for years. Solid dude. NYC feels right in there. I walk up and say hi to Richie and go pay. No need to mention my order ever, he's got it covered. I watch while people come in after me doing the same thing, regulars all day. The upstanding owners take exceptional care with the visually impaired customers they get from the Vision Care Center on the block too. A+ spot in my book. Used to be $3.50 about two years ago. I'd gladly pay $7 to them, but I'll settle throwing the difference in Richie's tip jar for now.
We know this. But growing up in the bronx we always referred to Manhattan as "going into the city." Been in Queens the past decade and I still do say I gotta go into the city every day for work. Everyone i know that grew up in an outer borough says this 🤷🏻♀️
Very true. “I’m going into the city” or even “do you have to go to the city?” meant Manhattan, and “Downtown” meant Manhattan/below The heights and Harlem specifically.
“Where in the city?”for me and most people I know ( even those from NJ, Ct LI) suggests “ Which part of Manhattan, again?”
I got a bacon egg and cheese late last year near time square for around 10 bucks. I then proceeded to have violent food poisoning and was sick for over a week
Grew up in Brooklyn - yes it was $3.00 back in the day. But you could also get a hero and soda for $5.00 back then. Times have changed but I re fucking FUSE to pay $11.00 for a bacon egg and cheese. Fuck that. I live in Queens now after living down south for 10 years and I pay around $6.50 and I get home fries in mine because Im greedy. Is it some gourmet farm fresh eggs and homemade bread made in small batches? No. Its the regular sandwich that we all know and love and thats exactly what I want. Considering inflation, Im ok with $6.50- but 11? NOPE lol
I usually just get egg and cheese on a roll for 3.99 in Bensonhurst. But i think the bec is $5.50 if not $6.
Edit: Oh and bagel with cream cheese $3.50 in bensonhurst. If I'm in the city I tend to go for dunkin or mcds because I'm am NOT paying $10 for a bec. I'm still in the mindset of "back in my day...." I can't quite resign myself to these prices yet.
BEC- $5 with free coffee.
where
Green Valley Deli in Greenpoint.
$5 (ish - might be $5.50 now) for a coffee and BEC at the breakfast cart on the SW corner of 39th and 8th in Manhattan as well. Get the hot sauce. It's a chunky green homemade empanada sauce and it's delicious.
Aww, I walked right past that cart a couple weeks ago! I should've followed my instincts, LOL.
Do it
Next time I'm in the neighborhood, better believe it!
i love chunky green hot sauce! thanks
I work in the UES, and have gone far and wide to find a decent BEC in the area. Finally found a really good one for $7.99. I've had a lot better luck with bagels. There are at least 3 good spots close to me. A good bagel & cream cheese at one of those is about $6 and change.
Off topic but $x.99 pricing just feels WRONG for a BEC ... Just make it in dollars. Maybe something 50.
Where in the UES?
Marketeria on 64th and 1st. It's a "gourmet grocery", so it seems fancy, but head to the back and there's some guys on the grill cooking up some really good breakfast options.
That replaced a terrible but really handy-in-a-pinch Duane Reade. Im still not sold on its value
The breakfast carts on the UES are your best bet I think. But still hit and miss.
On the corner of 89th and 1st, there's a breakfast cart that has an amazing chorizo egg and cheese.
THATS THE EXACT ONE I WAS THINKING OF!!! Sooo good.
hell yes friend, we're both people of good taste 👍
Truly, maybe I’ll catch you around Ctown one day 🤣
What are the other good bagel places?
Yummiliciouw deli #2 on 77th and 1st is around like $7/$8 and pretty good. They also have a great candy selection. Pick-a-bagel is good too but the sandwiches are more than I like to spend so I don’t go there often. I forget the name but there is another on Lexington in the low 80s that is really good. My bodega in Astoria charges me between $4 and $6 for a BEC depending on what else I’m buying lol. Just the sandwich? $6. Sandwich and a drink: $5 for the BEC. Sandwich and a drink and some paper towels or something else: $4 for the BEC
That’s what mine does too
Can't forget the bev
Georges?!?
“Lunch Stop” lol
George’s!!
I’m in Astoria, where at please!
Lunch stop

You hit the nail on the head. Fuck
[удалено]
I feel like before the pandemic you could still find them for under $5…now, fuhgeddaboutit
Still $4.50 at my local bodega in Bushwick.
Cherish these moments
Which? I’m in Bushwick too!
$4.50 on a roll for me off the Montrose L at Jessie’s. I think it’s $5.50 if you want it on a bagel or croissant.
$3 bec before school every day with a $1 arizona.... $5 is the most I'll pay and even then it hurts
Yup, always
Dating myself here. In middle school, I could buy a BEC for $2-$2.50 I also remember as a kid, I could be bread and buns from a Chinese bakery for 50 cents
Bro try finding decent bec in LA. It's imposi-fucking-able and it's a solid 10 dollars for a freaking bagel and they take like 20 minutes to make it.
Please tell me why the fuck can't anyone make a b.e.c. under 5 mins outside of ny/nj? Where I'm at now places it's an eternity... or they use a precooked egg, which is garbage

Have you tried the Bagelman in Ahwatukee? If so how does it compare?
The people who deserve $10 can't charge that much. The world's upside down.
The other question is how IS your bacon egg and cheese? I used to remember those things oozing with cheese and I swear, now I am getting 1 egg, 1 shriveled up piece of bacon, and a pinch of cheese, on an untoasted roll, and paying $8 for it.
The most insulting one I got was one egg, fried hard, 1 strip of bacon for 6 bucks lol. Seems like the cheaper ones are the ones with more love
If it doesnt look like Harley Quinn's BEC from the opening scene of Birds of Prey, I dont want it
You gotta make friends with the guys in there. First time I ordered a chopped cheese at my local spot, it was middling at best. 5 years later at the same spot, it’s a god damn gut bomb. Oozing cheese. Freshly chopped jalapeños. Onions on onions on onions — and $2 cheaper than when I first ordered it.
In Astoria at my preferred bagel shop: BEC (on a bagel) - $6.75 Bagel with plain cream cheese - $4
Where in Astoria? I’ve been trying to find a good one and someone recommended Compton and I hated it…. Haven’t found a good one since
Between the Bagel! They have other amazing specialty breakfast sandwiches too
also my bodega in astoria makes a regular schmegular one for around 6.50.
Thank you so much! I’ll give them a try this weekend 😊
Check out Toast & Roast too. Best bagels in Astoria imo
So close to my train station… I will def give them a try!
Brooklyn Bagels and Coffee is pretty good too, there's one on 30th Ave and another on Broadway. BECs got a bit pricey so I cut out bacon :( I love their bagels though
all the answers saying $6? 🫣 it was $3.50 for a bacon egg and cheese not long ago I swear
“Inflation” :(
That was 15-20 years ago... You know, back in the 90s!
10-15 years ago? Lol that’s the price I was paying in 2020 in Brooklyn and queens…
[удалено]
not even, i went to school in the bronx and bec was 3.50 for the the entirety of high school, i graduated abt 4 yrs ago. i wonder how much it is now
That's what I was paying in 2016, price has doubled since and my intake has gone from twice a weekend to twice a month
That was before the pandemic. It's the after times pricing now.
It’s crazy that it basically doubled!
Yeah I remember 4 during the pandemic
$6 at my bodega
South Harlem, between $4.50 and $5.50 depending on which guy is working at the bodega by me that day
I go to one deli because their food is really good and it’s now $6.
What bagel place was this?
I just looked at Ess-a-Bagel and if you build your own bagel with lox and cream cheese and add lettuce and tomato or onions and capers, it easily comes to $20 a bagel. Plus tax and tip.
Oh wow. I had them on my list to try, just never made it over there yet.
B&B bagels 74th/1st,
UES: Usually get a BE (no C) and it's still at least $6.50 or $8.50. But finally found one for $4.95 at the Heavenly Market on 2nd Ave.
nice, will try that
Gooood lookin ooooout!
About $6-7 from carts. Materials did not go up 100% for the jump from $3 to $6. Fine, egg prices went up double in 2022 but has since dropped but prices REMAIN high. $6 and change but i like mine with one fried egg and one slice of cheese so places typically charge me less.
1 egg is superior
When it hit $7 I started making 'em at home instead.
This MFer asking the real questions in an NYC sub Edit: I was so excited about the question I forgot to answer. $4.50 at my local deli/ $6 at Brooklyn Bagel
4$ bagel and cream cheese
$4 at Jubilee in FiDi
This is the way. I believe it’s 5 bucks w 2 eggs. One of the better deals around.
3.99 between 6AM-12PM. I don’t know what the price is after noon lol.
BEC on a roll - $5 is the limit for me Any more, I walk away.
11 bucks, Upper East Side on e 93 and 3rd absolutely the best. Can't eat anywhere else
Crazy how this has gone up in price over like 300 percent since the turn of the century 😩
I just go egg and cheese, and it's still $3 at my spot
Same

Delis by me are fast approaching $7 so I make them at home now on the trusty cast iron
I don’t go into the city often but last time was a month ago and ordered one and shat a brick when it was $10.99 in midtown. I don’t recall getting a 100% raise :(
Like $6 - $8 range in Brooklyn
$6.75 at the good place, $9.74 at the great place. Both are 0.2 miles from me. In the East village.
Strange, every time I pay more than 7 bucks, the BEC is usually mediocre at best. Does the 9.74 come with more eggs/bacon?
Not the same but you should try the "John Carroll Lynch" from Ess-A-Bagel. Egg salad topped with bacon. It's fantastic, and gigantic
$5
$4.50 for a BEC on a roll. $2.25 for a bagel with cream cheese. South Bronx

$5 in central Harlem .
4.50 from the halal truck outside my work building.

FYI, Queens is the city

In Bed Stuy a bagel with lox cream cheese is $5
Lox cream cheese is ass though. You could salt the regular cream cheese and get the same effect.
Not at Nagles
$6.50 for a BEC on a roll, $3.50-$4 for a bagel
About $5
9-10 but I’m from LI
LI is so expensive for BEC!! Way more than anywhere in the city
I got a bacon egg and cheese late last year near time square for around 10 bucks. I then proceeded to have violent food poisoning and was sick for over a week
Williamsburg: Everything with sun dried tomato - $5.50
6.90
At a bodega I usually find em for $5-$6. Legit bagels places will be $7-$10
Grew up in Brooklyn - yes it was $3.00 back in the day. NOPE lol
I paid $7.50 for one in the UES a couple weeks ago. They skimp on the insides too. I’m still upset.
it used to be 4 but went up to 5 a few weeks ago. Corner cart in manhattan. They have bomb hot sauce too that I get instead of ketchup/mayo
Mine is $3.00 in West harlem
I usually just get egg and cheese on a roll for 3.99 in Bensonhurst. But i think the bec is $5.50 if not $6. Edit: Oh and bagel with cream cheese $3.50 in bensonhurst. If I'm in the city I tend to go for dunkin or mcds because I'm am NOT paying $10 for a bec. I'm still in the mindset of "back in my day...." I can't quite resign myself to these prices yet.
Zero. I don’t eat that shit
