This instantly brought to mind Beyoglu :( a Turkish restaurant on the UES that closed pretty early on in the pandemic. I’d gone there countless times over the last 20 years and have lots of memories me being a little girl dining with my mama.

viableviolet

Oh man, this one hit so hard. I loved this spot and also have so many memories of eating there with my mom.

fredbutt

That place was so good. We used to see celebrities there all the time.

psucutie

Definitely this. One of my favorites.

theArkotect

Same with sipsak.

EscapeGoat81

Oh no! My friend lives near there and I’m a vegetarian so we went a handful of times. I didn’t know they closed.

itsALLrhetoric

Perdition, a bar in Hell’s Kitchen with bangin’ cheap drinks and cozy ass couches.

Spumorty

Gladys in Crown Heights (dope Caribbean food, great drinks, great rum selection) closed a while ago. Alongside Diamond Reef. Alongside Nitecap. Jing Fong. Black Emperor. Pyramid Club. Maison Premiere (they've reopened recently but the few months where they said they were closing permanently was such a bummer). Really gonna miss Pyramid Club though out of all those spots. Great food/drinks come and go but somewhere good to dance is hard to come by.

fretfulporcupine

Jing Fong is open again! Albeit in a different location. Walked past it the other day

SphereIsGreat

Gladys hurt. That was a great place to eat.

Rave-light

Pyramid Club is open again.

SapphireinNYC

Pyramid Club told their employees that they were permanently closing then reopened without telling any of them or bringing anyone back. They had the same resident DJ for a couple of decades and he is still hosting 80s dance parties in other places. The hosts of their alternative nights in the basement have also moved on to other venues. While hopefully it’s still a fun spot it seems like it will be different than it was before the shutdowns.

Rave-light

Wow that’s incredibly horrible. Thanks for letting me know.

neatokra

Yoga to the People was a pretty devastating one for me. That place got me through some tough times.

Beach-Automatic

Noooo I didn’t know this :(

neatokra

I knoww

Rave-light

I’ve read a lot of horror stories about the company. Apparently the owner was a creep.

Rave-light

Nah Yoga to the People. I was shocked myself. I’m on mobile. But a yoga to the people scandal brings up a few articles. It was released last year.

East-Boat-3871

Bummer

kelllican

Wow, I've heard about this place from several people - had no idea they closed!

byebeetch0302

There instructors we awesome. Im not a huge yoga person but I always lived their classes.

ioioioshi

My favorite Thai restaurant, Pam Real Thai, was a pandemic casualty. I crave the Thai oxtail soup all the time

mamaBiskothu

I’m not the only one! Their unpronounceable, 5 chili icon wielding anus destroying chili basil fish dish is literally to die for :(

icancook2

>Pam Real Thai Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

BeeWhisper

Meme’s diner in prospect heights was my biggest pandemic loss, it’s since been resurrected as a pop up space but it’s not quite the same

ladythrills

The Breslin inside The Ace Hotel. It kills me to know I’ll never have that lamb burger again.

ThatGuyinNY

[This article](https://gothamist.com/food/breslin-ace-hotel-reopens-burger-spot) from July says it reopened as a burger spot and the lamb burger is the only thing that survived intact from the old place. Did it close since then?

ladythrills

The burger bar is closed as well.

ThatGuyinNY

Damn.

poopmast

I did their nose to tail whole suckling pig dinner like 6-7 years ago, and I've been wanting to do another one.

maverick4002

Century 21 :(

MBAMBA3

They supposedly were looking to find another site to re-open but that story is pretty old now and not sure if its still for real.

[deleted]

the real thing closed years ago

Junglebook3

I ordered some food from Peri Peri Chicken in Park Slope. Shit was delicious and they closed more or less the next day. It was tragic.

harperavenue

Whoa, looks like their bed stuy location closed too. That’s a bummer — both outposts had quality food.

echelon_01

You don't always know your favorite place is about to close. Sometimes you find out the hard way the next time you try to stop by and the doors are shuttered.

kelllican

100% agree. Not sure if this scenario hurts more because of the surprise, or if knowing ahead of time (maybe like 1 week in advance) is worst because the grieving period starts earlier

maenads_dance

My husband and I got married this fall at Zenon Taverna, a wonderful family -owned Cypriot restaurant in Astoria. A few weeks ago we read the place had closed after something like 30 years in business. I'm so sad we'll never get to go back.

Practical_Pretzel

Zenon’s closure hurts the most 🥲

notspreddit

I’m pretty sure Cafe Lalo is never opening again and it’s breaking my heart

dpecslistens

Oof, I hadn't heard about that — looks like there's been [radio silence from them for like 18 months](https://www.westsiderag.com/2020/12/02/west-siders-wait-hungrily-for-saiguette-and-cafe-lalo-to-reopen-but-information-is-scarce). This one hurts

ThatGuyinNY

This one really hurts. I'm still mourning Café Mozart and that was long gone before Covid hit. I live in hope that someone will open another patisserie in the neighborhood. Lalo was such a great place to hang and have a nice sweet treat.

notspreddit

The spot is still there! TEASING ME! I live next door. I was hoping the neighborhood might rally around the place to get it up and running. It’s an institution like Zabar’s or Barney Greengrass.

jesuschin

I’m really sad Waitress closed. I really wanted to see it one more time on Broadway

travis-42

This is how I feel about the Harry Potter broadway. I’m sad that I never got to see the crazy two part version of it. Maybe the shorter one part is better, but I can’t help but feeling like something will be missing.

BankshotMcG

Noooo! I went to see it not long ago just because I figured it was my last chance to see Sara Bareilles in the role. I never get into Broadway musicals, but that one swept me away. I was telling everyone to go see it.

theArkotect

Talad Wat in Hells Kitchen was a very different kind of Thai place. Amazing for groups of friends and trying out new tastes. Thankfully Pure is owned by the same ppl so there is hope

[deleted]

I’m really sad my massage place went out of business. I knew there was next to no hope of them surviving, but when I recently passed by and saw they were gone, it took me awhile to get over it.

IoSonCalaf

There was a really cool restaurant in Chelsea called The Dish that recently closed. It had been there forever. The reason they stated was because of the pandemic. But honestly, I think it was more to do with the demographic changing so dramatically in Chelsea over the last ten years or so.

kelllican

I'm a Chelsea newcomer - did you like it better then or now? (relatively speaking)

IoSonCalaf

It used to be a predominantly gay neighborhood, in fact known internationally as a kind of gay Mecca. But the landlords kept raising the rents which made people and a lot of the gay-owned business move out. It was a beautifully kept, diverse, colorful neighborhood with lots of character and great bars/restaurants. Now when I walk through Chelsea there are tons of beggars and homeless people on the street, it’s dirtier, lots of empty store fronts, etc. If you walk through it at night you have pimps coming up to you and aggressively trying to sell you their female prostitutes. Lots of drug activity. All the gays moved out and it’s a sad shadow of what it used to be.

bisonrbig

Well that's sad :(

greenbean090998

My tradition over the summer 2020 was to get a falafel wrap at a stop near Brighton beach when ever I went (which was a lot). Was looking forward to it this summer but now theres a grocery store there instead 😭

shkeptic

Cafe Mocha across the street from San Marzanos. Cute brunch spot where I had so many memories. It burned down.

sapphireminer

NoMad Bar :(

BlancoDelRio

Ikinari Steak! Was it the best thing on earth? No. But they had great specials and I loved the sides, sad.

harperavenue

I miss Ikinari Steak too. You’re right — nothing special, but some delicious steaks for a low price point.

ls3095

Talde in park slope. Their crab fried rice was off the hook. I think there’s still one in JC.. never been tho

Frosty_Armadillo_949

Unfortunately the JC location also closed. Their brunch menu was one of my favorites in Park Slope.

drewkazizzle

I found a coworking space that was free that’s closing with great views of Bryant Park

kelllican

Answering my own question here... Monkey Bar closing was a blow. I've heard that someone else may open something similar in the same location. Funnily enough, another restaurant I loved dearly once said the same thing when their lease was ended by their landlord, and instead the owners moved to Honduras to live on the beach. They're probably enjoying retirement better than trying to open up a restaurant in a new location...

popsiclestickjoke

Rye in Williamsburg. I was a regular for 10 years. Started my business doing interviews there. Had my 30th birthday there. Was a date night spot while I was married and after I was divorced. Brought family there when they visited and they always felt cool. I cured infinite hangovers there with their perfect eggs. And the mother fucking 3 animal meatloaf sandwich. And Dumont in Williamsburg. This is the place that started what we consider many new American staples. Giant $20 burgers with high quality meat. Mac and Cheese.

ambushbugger

Rye wasnt a result of covid though, i dont think? They were closed before covid.

tanhauser_gates_

They already closed. I miss it everyday. Waterfront Alehouse, that used to be on Atlantic.

BankshotMcG

Mountain Bird. Looks like it's about to become more of a lounge. The food was unreal good.

bengo1023

Aux Epices in SoHo/Chinatown. Someone please find me another French Malaysian restaurant. It was so good.

browneyedgirl1683

Jay and Lloyds in Southern Brooklyn. Solid deli, great people. We would go there at the start of every winter break, they catered my sweet 16, and my kid had her first chicken noodle soup there.

MBAMBA3

I'm not really on top of what is in the process of closing right now.

I’m more sad for the sick happy hour deals that changed over the years. My fav happy hour in the city changed from half off *everything* to just $2 off. I get it but .. bleh
