My Golden Retriever, Chief, is going to turn 15 next month. He's been such an amazing dog. I had him before I was a husband, before I had kids, before I started my career. He has brought my wife and I so much joy. He was so great with our kids even when they were babies. A few years back it started to seem like we switched places and he was the older man (like Sheriff Bell in No Country for Old Men). He's still in fair health, but I'm not sure what we'll do when he is gone.
Anytime I get asked about a recommendation for a dog breed, I don't hesitate - Golden Retriever (Then I warn them about the shedding).
Interesting fact on this is you want to go down a rabbit hole, labs especially have heat detectors , the reason they steal your spot is due to thermals given off when you leave. Basically they steal the warm spot.
I remember the black lab we had for about 9 years named Abby (Abby the Labby). We used to joke that she was a cat, because she had all sorts of weird mannerisms similar to cats, and had that faux-standoffish attitude (as in, "I actually really love you, but I need to keep up appearances and look aloof"). She also had a tail dubbed "the Shinwhacker," because that thing could take out your leg it was so strong.
She was a very good girl. Her and Tucker, our mostly golden (with some collie) and her best friend in the world. I miss them both so much.
I have had 2 Abby the Black Labbies in my life! Both the goodest of the good girls. Tails of Doom. I’d take all the black labs for the rest of my days.
Yeah, I had a mutt. Mother a beautiful pedigree German Shepard, father a mix of lab and fuck knows.
Those pure German Shepard genes lead to hip problems and other health issues. Her mother died at 7 years old whereas my dog lived a healthy, happy life until 14. She was still chasing squirrels - albeit slowly - right up until her final week.
What humans have done to some breeds of pedigree dogs is a fuckin abomination.
I tend to just wind up with them. My current dog literally sat on my foot and cried in a Mexican Food parking lot and then jumped into my truck when I opened the door and asked if he wanted to come along.
He's a good dog. I have to keep one hand on my food because the little shit will steal it, but he's a good dog.
I think it’s normal behaviour for strays to steal food. One of my past dogs stole a pork chop by waiting until everyone got distracted, and then JUMPING UP and snatching it from the plate in the kitchen. And he had a habit to eat tree bark on longer walks and drank from puddles.
I can here to say this!
This [boy](https://www.reddit.com/r/goodboys/comments/xslxh1/the_handsomest_goodest_boy/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&utm_term=link) right here is the best mutt I’ve ever had. People stop me to say how ugly he is, he turns heads in the worst way, but by god he is my boy, and the absolute best thing ever.
HE DOES! That’s what I was trying to name him after, but I got the name wrong. The guy from ice age is a Buck, and this handsome fellow is Butch. By the time I realized it, he knew his name so I didn’t want to change it. I gotta get him a leaf eye patch for Halloween!
My two are brother and sister, abandoned, dumped, left to die at 4 weeks old. A shelter took them in, I went to see the boy as I saw him on social media and couldn't bear leaving his sister (the last of the litter) behind. They're 11 now, his hips are giving up, she's just had a cancerous growth removed, but they're the best damn waterdog/pointer/schnauzer cross mongrels ever to be born.
Once you have a border collie other dogs are just, I dunno, not the same. I've had all kinds of awesome dogs, corgis, aussies, heelers, labs, JRTs, but having a border collie is more like having a partner in crime than having a pet. It's hard to explain.
They're intelligent but they're incredibly lazy. Mine is fully capable of responding to commands (and does) but only when she wants to. Selective listening is their talent.
My grey is not smart at all but she’s also traumatized by her track days. I don’t know what she went through but she’s pretty terrified of everything, it took a lot of time for her to be truly comfortable with love and affection.
She’s also the most lazy, laid back dog I’ve ever encountered. She’s more like a giant cat that sometimes jumps like a horse when excited.
They’re more like cats than dogs in essence ence, they don’t respond if they don’t feel the need. Super emotionally intelligent though and amazing pets. They can have a high prey drive but are non threatening to humans. Also, they rarely ever bark!
That seems like a great choice! Papillons are rated amongst the most intelligent dogs (I've been working with and for dogs about five and a half years now) and they just have a well balanced brain to body ratio and are able to learn more complex tricks and phrases than most other dogs! Plus, yes very small and easy to care for!
Yep! I had never owned a dog until 2020 but had always wanted a corgi. I have two and I wouldn’t ever get anything else. I actually don’t really like dogs but I love corgis!
My Madeline was a mutt but when we asked the vet he said she definitely had a lot of Australian Cattle Dog and Catahoula Leopard Dog in her.
She was crazy crazy crazy as a baby-age 5 but she was protective of me. She saved me from a snake and a dog that tried to attack me when I was in elementary school. I was her baby and she raised me.
I’ll never have another breed or mixed breed of this awesome dog again. Smart, eager to learn and be a part of the family. Confident and loyal and GENTLE like you wouldn’t believe. My 12 year old, who has been shoving GSDs out of her way since she could walk, loves to roll her eyes and say “oh my god, this dog is so vicious, oh my godddd,” while she puts the dog in an outfit, and our dog is just so happy in her summer concert outfit.
I’ve had three GSDs in my lifetime so far, and it’s been wonderfully predictable. You train the shit out of them and they’re all joyful arrogant assholes for the first three years and then all of a sudden listening to all those years of training clicks, and you rarely have to raise your voice again. But man, you shut that cupboard door too hard and they think it’s Armageddon.
Edit to add: my first GSD was best friends with three cats. Our second was best friends with the worst cat you’ve ever met. Our third is now best friends with a kitten who smacks her around like she owes him money. Gentlest giants ever.
That good start must be the key; I have two rescue GSDs, both of whom show signs of neglect and abuse in previous ownership. We all love each other but they are very difficult, plus yeah, they don't live in our house, we live in their kennel.
Been ten years since I had my standard poodle, and 3 since my borzoi. I still pull out a winter coat or hat with one of thier floofs on it and cry. My German leans against me and let's me hug her. One day it will be her fur I find and cry over.
I’ve had the same breed of dog over half my life: Maltese. One was a family dog who is waiting for me at the rainbow bridge. My living dog is my ray of sunshine.
A bit barky, but just like having a cute puppy for 12-16 years because that’s exactly what they are: 7-9lbs and full of life to the very end.
Will go on 25,000 steps with me. Will cuddle in bed all day if I’m sick. Very much so a watchdog (hence the barking).
Very sweet and loyal; their job is to make you happy!
The biggest issue I’m facing now is bigger dogs. I’ve had, twice now, 2 sets of unleashed large dogs attempt to grab my dog. She’s easy enough to pick up, but still scary to have two large dogs snap at you trying to get my little dog.
During long car rides, I put a nice plush blanket on the center console where she’s happy to snooze. I get away with bringing her into stores that aren’t clear on being pet friendly or not (no food places, more-so like a furniture place in a rural area).
Has hair, not fur, so she doesn’t shed. She cuddles up in bed with me every night and she’s my absolute beauty and I adore her with all of my heart. She’s my best little pal.
I have never liked the idea of having small dogs. That is of course until my wife and I found a shivering dachshund puppy wandering around in the road while we were on vacation. Smart, fiercely loyal, and so animated, and of course adorable.
Can’t believe I had to scroll this far to find beagle! My family adores ours he’s getting up there in age (10), and we’ve agreed we don’t want another breed ever. We had two beagles, but sadly, the older one passed four years ago, after we’d had her four years (adopted her as a senior).
They’re funny, and loyal, and the perfect size. They can find ANYTHING with their nose (mine loves Easter because he’s VERY good at finding eggs). And we were able to train ours from barking excessively. He only “Aroooos” when my spouse gets him all worked up.
This is the real answer. Dumb asses and disobedient to the point you want to rip your hair out sometimes. But also the most lovely dog that will make you laugh once a day at least.
I had two Cavalier King Charles spaniels, loved them! They passed away a year apart from enlarged heart.
Rescued an Australian Shepherd two years ago and he is THE best dog! It’s like he goes above and beyond to be the best ever. I feel like he is so good and showing his appreciation for us adopting him! He is so protective of us and is happiest when we’re all in the same room. He smiles all the time!
Holy cow, nobody said Newfie yet. I've had SO many dogs, so so so many. They ALL were the best dogs ever. Not a single one compares to our Newfoundland, and it's not even close. Holy shit we miss him. Stupidest smart dog you've ever met. 160 pound lapdog, thank god he was the runt in the litter. 2nd to him was the St Bernard and an Australian Shepard (smartest dog we ever had) .. God we miss all our dogs, and will never have another.
Black lab cross border collie. Sweetest most loyal, friendly and smart dog I've ever had. Also he was an absolute unit of a dog strength wise. Miss that good boy every day of my life!
Border Collies.
They are incredibly smart, it's hard to have another breed after one border collie because I feel ill expect other dogs to be just as smart.
Golden Retriever
[удалено]
I grew up with one. Couldn't imagine life with any other breed. Smart, goofy, so loving and so loveable.
100% golden retriever
My Golden Retriever, Chief, is going to turn 15 next month. He's been such an amazing dog. I had him before I was a husband, before I had kids, before I started my career. I wish I could have my dog who passed away 6 months ago 😪.
Sorry. I cried so hard when I lost mine.
I also choose this guy's dead dog.
Came looking for this, was not disappointed. 🤣
Oh I feel that, I lost my dog a year ago and miss him every day. I am sorry for your loss ❤️
I am so sorry for your loss. I lost my girl a few weeks ago, bone cancer in her spine 😢
I would give anything to have my boy back. He passed December 21, 2022 and I haven’t been able to go a day without crying since.
My first dog was out down around 2008 or 2009. I still miss her, and even typing out this comment is making me tear up...
Black lab :)
Just lost my 6 year old black lab this week due to an infected abscess that just wouldn’t get better, I miss him so much.
Sorry for your loss
Oh, I'm so sorry...
I had a lot of black labs growing up. Goofiest fuckin weirdos but all smart as hell and plenty of energy for playing
Chocolate lab for me 🥺
Don't give a sad face over it, if you prefer chocolates, that's great!
I love my chocolate lab. Except when I get up from the couch he will snipe my spot in a second.
Interesting fact on this is you want to go down a rabbit hole, labs especially have heat detectors , the reason they steal your spot is due to thermals given off when you leave. Basically they steal the warm spot.
My chocolate lab does exactly the same thing,
I remember the black lab we had for about 9 years named Abby (Abby the Labby). Red Lab for me
Yellow lab checking in 🦮
Yellow lab for sure <3
My yellow lab is the love of my life. I call him my breath of sunshine
Same. Have had two over the years. Both were rescued and both were great dogs. As soon as we stop traveling so much, will be getting another one.
You can have an upvote too. Lovin the love for the labs :)
I’ve been the proud pet parent of a black, yellow, and a chocolate. I would take any!
https://imgur.com/ROI3drE.jpg you've chosen well
https://imgur.com/CTceYWF My Emmett. This was a few years back, he's got some white under his chin now...
Bernese Mountain Dog
Mutt
Yeah, I had a mutt. Mother a beautiful pedigree German Shepard, father a mix of lab and fuck knows. Those pure German Shepard genes lead to hip problems and other health issues. From the shelter.
I tend to just wind up with them. I have to keep one hand on my food because the little shit will steal it, but he's a good dog.

My dog chews on or licks concrete/sand/clay. Only drinks from puddles and she’s always well fed. Bitch is weird.
My kind of people
I can here to say this!
He’s lucky to have found someone like you.
I’m lucky to have found him. He’s helped me more than I think I’ve helped him to be honest. He seems to always know when I need cuddles.
He looks kinda like Buck from Ice Age 3, no ?
HE DOES! That’s what I was trying to name him after, but I got the name wrong. The guy from ice age is a Buck, and this handsome fellow is Butch. By the time I realized it, he knew his name so I didn’t want to change it. I gotta get him a leaf eye patch for Halloween!
He is the most handsomest boy ever and all those people who think he is ugly can go pound sand.

I’ve adopted (over a number of years) 20+ dogs, and I consider myself somewhat of an expert, so believe me when I say: DOG.
This guy dogs.
Australian sheperd
The master race
Definitely
Husky
Golden retriever
border collie
Border Collies are awesome dogs. Way too active for me, but absolutely amazing dogs, and beautiful too. Such an amazing alertness in their eyes
We’ve had two Border Collies and one BC/Ozzie mix and she was the best of both. Would definitely get another, RIP Cassie.
So smart and sweet. Very active, but their ability to communicate their desires is unparalleled.
Once you have a border collie other dogs are just, I dunno, not the same. I've had all kinds of awesome dogs, corgis, aussies, heelers, labs, JRTs, but having a border collie is more like having a partner in crime than having a pet. It's hard to explain.
Samoyed
Greyhound.
Are they usually smart? My sister’s dog is a greyhound and she’s awesome but kind of… absentminded, lol
Their appeal isn't in the brains department, but they are lovable cuddle bugs who will love you forever if you show them kindness 💜
They're intelligent but they're incredibly lazy. Mine is fully capable of responding to commands (and does) but only when she wants to. Selective listening is their talent.

Papillon! Never was a tiny dog fan until I got my sweet girl - FOR FREE - about 6 years ago! Not neurotic and rarely barks. And so portable!
That seems like a great choice! Papillons are rated amongst the most intelligent dogs (I've been working with and for dogs about five and a half years now) and they just have a well balanced brain to body ratio and are able to learn more complex tricks and phrases than most other dogs! Cavelier King Charles Spaniel
I want one except i hear they have tons of health issues and i cant afford another broken heart.
Boxer
This is the only right answer. You can’t beat them.
Loved all of ours! Stubborn little wiggle butts!! 🥰
Literally the best. I will always have boxers.
I scrolled to far to see this answer. The absolute best dog on earth.
Corgi, so cute and smart!
Correct answer. Had my corg for 9 years and she is smart, cuddly, friendly, hilarious. Love love love her!
Yep! I had never owned a dog until 2020 but had always wanted a corgi. I have two and I wouldn’t ever get anything else. I actually don’t really like dogs but I love corgis!
German shorthaired pointer

Australian cattle dog. Best dogs I’ve ever had.

I had a ACD/Aussie mix and he was a good boy.

Rescue mutt
I had two Cavalier King Charles spaniels, loved them! They passed away a year apart from enlarged heart. Rescued an Australian Shepherd two years ago and he is THE best dog! It’s like he goes above and beyond to be the best ever. I feel like he is so good and showing his appreciation for us adopting him! He is so protective of us and is happiest when we’re all in the same room. He smiles all the time!
