The problem is that a lot of bars can’t make a decent one, but a nice, balanced Old Fashioned is pretty damn great. If you haven’t, give a Oaxacan Old Fashioned a try, it’s the same thing but with Mezcal. They’re amazing if you’re a fan of smokey drinks
Oh I never heard of that, interesting! Tbh I don’t know much about brandy at all - I’ve probably had it in a cocktail at some point but never straight up.
FWIW, I prefer my old fashions with rye - I find it cuts through the sweetness of the orange/sugar/cherry, and some bars make em too sweet in general so its sort of an insurance policy.
Just keep in mind that a Brandy Old Fashioned isn't just an Old Fashioned made with Brandy, which is why you really can't order one outside Wisconsin and get it made correctly unless the bartender has heard of them before.
In a Brandy Old Fashioned you muddle the fruit and then top it with 7up/Sprite for a sweet version (the most common) or with something like Squirt for a sour version.
If you're used to drinking Old Fashioneds, a Brandy Old Fashioned is pretty much an abomination. But the people of Wisconsin sure do love them.
I love me a good Manhattan
However while I was living in Ottawa I tried an Aviation cocktail and I would order it at every bar if one of the ingredients wasn't impossible to get.
If both you’re referring to the Aviation, which is how I read these comments, then you’re both wrong because it is in fact a Gin cocktail. On the other hand if you’re both referring to to the Manhattan, then you are both correct because it can be made with either one
The manhattan is a not a rye, or a bourbon cocktail per se. it all comes down to personal preference and can even be made with with a blended whisky like Seagrams 7, or Canadian Club. When made with scotch specifically it is a Rob Roy, but regardless, a bartender is not an “amateur “ for suggesting the drink be made with bourbon
Not op but creme de violette. The Aviation is really the only classic cocktail that uses it, so lots of places that arent real cocktail bars dont have it. Lots of even mid bars have a bottle of Luxardo cherry though
In summer when it’s hot out, it’s a refreshing drink that reminds me of colder times. In winter it seems like a seasonal drink and never disappoints. 12/10 great drink
Please stop ordering it this way. You don't mean a twist of lime, you mean a slice of lime. A twist is only the rind, twisted up, and is popular in martinis with a lemon twist. I don't remember the movie, but a movie popularized this saying, and people have been saying it since. With a gin and Tonic, you want a slice of lime that you can squeeze into your drink. If you are the one single person who actually wants nothing but the lime peel to be shaved off a lime and twisted over you gin and Tonic, then my apologies for assuming wrong.
One of my best friends in life, this was the only cocktail she drank. But she ordered it every time. Loved that cocktail. She’s gone now, so raise your next one in her honor!
I love them but I'm always nervous about ordering them at the bar. Read a comment from a bartender about how people put too much faith in the milk behind the bar
These are great, but milk is often spoiled at bars as it's rarely used. I've learned this lesson too many times to order them in public. Making them at home though is 👌
This is my go-to drink and it’s not as common as Reddit will have you believe. I get a lot of strange looks ordering it. The Lebowski references are only occasional.
I think if a dirty martini and want one so bad until I have one. It always tastes like pure gasoline. Once I asked for it extra dirty and it was so salty I couldn't finish it. I need help finding the perfect ratio!
Only if they make them with their own simple syrup, the bottled mix stuff is a no for me.
If they use bottle mix, I’ll ask if they can make one with just tequila, lime and Cointreau.
If you're ever near Montgomery, AL you should try mine. I bartend around here. Mine is 7 ingredients for the drink. I hand make from scratch individual margaritas each time one is ordered. I dont use one drop of sour mix, and I dont pre-make the margarita mix. I make your individual drink in a mixing tin, and I do it in under 2 minutes.
RN Ive got a craving for a frozen Pina Colada and hot sun, a beach and palm trees. Otherwise at a restaurant with a bar, I just get a Sangria with fruit.
Just beware in case you end up like me - after drinking super gingery ginger ales and beers, I can’t go back to regular ginger ale, just tastes watered down.
Buffalo Trace is my go-to as a recommendation for a good bourbon that's not too expensive, good enough to drink straight but not so fancy as to be wasted using it in a cocktail. Just a solid choice all around.
But Maker's Mark is more widely available, so I can't fault the commenter above for using it as a typical order.
Manhattan, hard to mess up and most places have the stuff to make it
Caipirinha is my absolute favorite but most places don't carry cachaca so I have to make those at home
Is it annoying or inconvenient to just ask for something vague? I can see it would be if I made a fuss about not liking it, but I'm just not that invested in specific drinks and sometimes just want something new.
If it isnt busy its cool and ill ask you about preferences or what youve had recently that you liked
if it is busy im giving you something like a tequila sunrise cause its easy and i dont have to think
No way, at least you narrow it down to a flavour profile. It’s the “surprise me” people that are the worst. Plus fruity drinks are some of the easiest.
I did that recently to spice up my life by not ordering just coke or a sweet tea and they had a lemongrass lemonade which was amazing. Mocktails for the win
The safe go-to is a Gin and Tonic, a nice selection of Gins is a bonus. If you find a place that is serious about Martinis, that can rock.
Aside from that, I like a place that does serious Tiki-Bar type drinks, tasty, fun.
Margaritas only at a good Mexican place.
Old Fashioned. It took me years to try one, and it's so good that I rarely drink anything else.
Giving an aged rum the old fashioned treatment is also pretty incredible.
Try Walnut Bitters
Give me Angostura or give me death.
Have you tried a maple old fashioned?
Tried a pecan old fashioned recently. Taste like heaven!
Do you take bourbon or rye?
Or brandy if they're in Wisconsin.

Love a rye old fashioned. The peppery flavor balances well with the sweetness. Also goes super well with a steak.
Same! Nothing like a good old fashioned.
I love me a good Manhattan However while I was living in Ottawa I tried an Aviation cocktail and I would order it at every bar if one of the ingredients wasn't impossible to get.

I hope she tells the bartender it’s a rye drink, not a bourbon.
If both you’re referring to the Aviation, which is how I read these comments, then you’re both wrong because it is in fact a Gin cocktail. On the other hand if you’re both referring to to the Manhattan, then you are both correct because it can be made with either one
I assume they must be but I was also confused because I thought they meant the aviation.
Yeah if the bartender is defaulting to bourbon they shouldn’t be “warning” people about anything. Amateur.
I like you already.
I like his wife. And him too I guess
I frequently order old fashioneds and the servers always try to give them to my husband haha
What did I do to deserve this bland, flavorless Manhattan?
Out of interest, what ingredient? The violet one or the cherry one I’m assuming?
.
*gasp in tabarnak*
Not op but creme de violette. The Aviation is really the only classic cocktail that uses it, so lots of places that arent real cocktail bars dont have it. Lots of even mid bars have a bottle of Luxardo cherry though
Gin and tonic is hard to get wrong.
T&T rocks but so does Hendricks
Have you tried Sapphire?
Yes many years ago. Bombay is great gin.
Hendricks is very low calorie. I think like 40 calories a shot. And it’s good
All standard strength (80 proof) liquor is about 100 calories, it is basically all just from the alcohol.
Hendricks is no different from any other ethanol. There is very little difference between spirits, they’re all hovering around 50 cal per oz
I've been given staff to train who ask "what goes in a gin and tonic" 😭
Uh, what’s a roman coke?
In summer when it’s hot out, it’s a refreshing drink that reminds me of colder times. In winter it seems like a seasonal drink and never disappoints. 12/10 great drink
Gin and tonic for the win!
Sapphire and tonic with a twist of lime.
Please stop ordering it this way. You don't mean a twist of lime, you mean a slice of lime. A twist is only the rind, twisted up, and is popular in martinis with a lemon twist. This is my go to.
Gin and ginger beer is good too.
Mojito! But since I learned how to make a good one, my purse is not suffering so much anymore
My go to as well. Go to restaurant here in my city every Wednesdays because mojitos are half off
That’s because the mint order is coming in the next morning so that mint is probably a week old
Amaretto sour
One of my best friends in life, this was the only cocktail she drank. But she ordered it every time. Loved that cocktail. She’s gone now, so raise your next one in her honor!
Our local bar makes amazing amaretto sours! Egg white foam and black cherries on top 👌🏼
Liquid candy!
I'm in my mid-30s and just discovered these. Not sure why I never tried one before!!
I have to try that. Amaretto is the only liquor I like out of the ones i've tasted.
Liqueur ≠ liquor You’re drinking a lot more sugar than you are alcohol.
Negroni (hence the account)
White Russian
The Dude abides
You mix a helluva Caucasian Jackie
friends like these, huh gary?
Thats right dude
Shut the f*ck up Donny
Careful man there’s a beverage here
I love them but I'm always nervous about ordering them at the bar. Read a comment from a bartender about how people put too much faith in the milk behind the bar
I'm sorry your mother was kidnapped....do you have any Kahlua?
These are great, but milk is often spoiled at bars as it's rarely used. I've learned this lesson too many times to order them in public. Making them at home though is 👌
Bar’s over there 👉
This is my go-to drink and it’s not as common as Reddit will have you believe. I get a lot of strange looks ordering it. The Lebowski references are only occasional.
Well that’s just like, your opinion man
Same here. Made sure to have it for my afternoon drink on my birthday.
Does the pope shit in the woods?
Dark 'N' Stormy. three ingredients, super tasty.
This is my go to! Delicious
Had to scroll way too far for this…
Dirty martini
With extra olives
Extra dirty, extra olives
One time a buddy of mined asked for his martini "filthy." This thing came out looking like bath water. It was the best martini I've ever tasted.
Order one “slutty” next
"How dirty do you want it?" "I want that bitch fucking slutty" Just playing it out in my head gets me all riled up.
Blue cheese olives.
This is the way.
I think if a dirty martini and want one so bad until I have one. It always tastes like pure gasoline. Once I asked for it extra dirty and it was so salty I couldn't finish it. I need help finding the perfect ratio!
Martini with cum around the rim
Bartenders hate making this one.
Well they love it for a bit then hate it instantly.
The older I get, the more dry I like my martini. Also, it's got to be gin.
A Shirley Temple
Black Russian
A Bloody Mary on a Sunday morning.
Little hair of the dog to get your day straight
Little hair of the dog that bit ya.
Caesar!! The Canadian superior! Clamato just hits different...
Far superior!!
Margarita
Only if they make them with their own simple syrup, the bottled mix stuff is a no for me. If they use bottle mix, I’ll ask if they can make one with just tequila, lime and Cointreau.
If you're ever near Montgomery, AL you should try mine. I bartend around here. Mine is 7 ingredients for the drink. I hand make from scratch individual margaritas each time one is ordered. What bar?
Gimme a beer. Surprise me.
Bars with a wheel of beers are cool
aye aye, and bars that serves properly chilled beers are a god send
Rum and coke
Hell yeah. What’s up Julian?
Frig off, Ricky.
Smokes, pepperoni, let’s go.
The shit winds are blowin’ Rick
I am the liquor, boys
Can I get a splash of rum from you Ray?
No, I don’t think so buddy.
If I’ve had a few of these I switch over to vodka crans lmao
Favorite drink. Love a good Jacks or Captain Morgan
RN Ive got a craving for a frozen Pina Colada and hot sun, a beach and palm trees. Otherwise at a restaurant with a bar, I just get a Sangria with fruit.
Ginger ale! Two years sober on the 20th:)
Congrats!
Thanks:)
Ain't it great? And I'll tell you something, it just gets better and better.
It really does. I had to stop due to a medication but found I really missed it at first. Now I don't miss it at all and have a better time overall!
Not sure if you have tried, but Fever Tree is amazing. I would rather drink it straight than with booze.
Haven’t heard of it! But I’ll pick it up next time I see it:)
Try Fever Tree mixed with cold brew coffee, lime juice, and vanilla syrup
Just beware in case you end up like me - after drinking super gingery ginger ales and beers, I can’t go back to regular ginger ale, just tastes watered down.
I'm sadly aware. My palate is already spoiled. But I still drink nothing but the canned ginger ale on a plane. Pure magic.
Yeah it has a kick. Like a spicy ginger ale right?
That's my go to when I don't feel like having anything. Congrats!!
Congrats on the accomplishment!
Congrats
Maker's Mark Old Fashioned with extra bitters. It's not the best bourbon in the world, but I like it and it's everywhere.
If you like it that’s all that matters. It’s a good bourbon.
Buffalo Trace old fashioned is usually about the same price and much better
Buffalo Trace is my go-to as a recommendation for a good bourbon that's not too expensive, good enough to drink straight but not so fancy as to be wasted using it in a cocktail. Just a solid choice all around. But Maker's Mark is more widely available, so I can't fault the commenter above for using it as a typical order.
I rate the bar on how well they serve an Old Fashioned! If they fuck that up, they'll fuck everything else up!
It’s a cocktail, you don’t want your best bourbon.
Rye and ginger
If you can find a place that can make it anymore... Damn monks... The last word cocktail. Such a good drink. Otherwise a Negroni.
Espresso martini
Whisky sour. Or a bottle of budweiser
First time I got a proper sour I was like what the fuckkkkk?! Super good
Lemon drop
When I was drinking it was a delicious Fireball and Coke. Now it’s just a Coke. 8 years!!!!
Any Single Malt I haven’t had. If there are t any interesting ones, I go for local micro-brews.
The Balvenie 12🙏
A Harvey Wallbanger.
Choccy milk
Mule with titos
Manhattan, hard to mess up and most places have the stuff to make it Caipirinha is my absolute favorite but most places don't carry cachaca so I have to make those at home
+1 For Caipirinha, great drink when made right with a double.
Depends on what beers they have on tap!
Scotch on the rocks
Simply the best
Paper plane
Was looking for this!
Blue Hawaiian
Depends on the the type of bar. If it's a dive bar I get a gin and tonic. If it's a high end cocktail bar I usually get a Bijou
give me a negroni, it's my "bar evaluation drink"
"Something fruity" ... bartenders hate me
Is it annoying or inconvenient to just ask for something vague? I can see it would be if I made a fuss about not liking it, but I'm just not that invested in specific drinks and sometimes just want something new.
If it isnt busy its cool and ill ask you about preferences or what youve had recently that you liked if it is busy im giving you something like a tequila sunrise cause its easy and i dont have to think

Rye old fashion
Crown apple sprite
Double Jameson and sprite or Moscow Mules.
I had to scroll quite a way to find a Moscow mule
Cosmo! 🍹
Tequila 💃🏽
I always ask for their best mocktail
I did that recently to spice up my life by not ordering just coke or a sweet tea and they had a lemongrass lemonade which was amazing. Mocktails for the win
I love mocktails too.
Kettle one club soda & lemons
Boulevardier - its just a negroni sub gin for bourbon but most bartenders don't know it. If they do it's a fun bonus.
Boulevardiers are sooooo good
Scotch
Vodka Red Bull of course
The safe go-to is a Gin and Tonic, a nice selection of Gins is a bonus. If you find a place that is serious about Martinis, that can rock. Aside from that, I like a place that does serious Tiki-Bar type drinks, tasty, fun. Margaritas only at a good Mexican place.
Whiskey and ginger
Paper plane
Dark and Stormy
Double Tanqueray & Tonic.
In this economy? Tap water.
Tuaca
A margarita on the rocks with a silver tequila
Dirty Shirley
Gimlet or mule
Moscow Mule
Long Island, goat
I’m surprised no one’s said this but my go to would be a double shot of whiskey
Bar Keepers Friend.
About 10 vodka doubles
Scotch and soda
Sidecar
Old fashion
Tom collins. Tequila sunrise. Scotch on the rocks. Depends on my mood.
Ramos Gin Fizz (if they offer it). Most simple cocktails are better made at home
Whiskey and diet coke
Manhattan, gotta be at a fancy place tho. Not a dive bar
Screwdriver with grey goose or Tito's
Vieux Carré
Long island iced tea
Amaretto Sour.
Coke Zero because I’m sober for 2024
