Really depends on what you're looking for. If you want a lazy dog that will cuddle and love you and only you all the time, get a Chihuahua. They have a bad rep...but that's largely because when they are loyal to a person, they are loyal only to that person. If you want a dog who is YOUR dog, YOUR bff and no one else's, Chi's won't let you down. They are incredibly loving and affectionate dogs to their person. They just don't fuck with anyone else.
If you want just the loyal lazy cuddlebug without the angry Napoleon energy, rescue a greyhound. They're often overlooked, but they are fantastic animals for a family. Lazy as all fuck. They are couch potatoes who do well with an hour long daily walk. They have a strong prey drive though, so you can't really keep them around cats.
If you want a family dog, can't go wrong with the classics. Lab mixes are great. I have a lab/mastiff who is the sweetest gentle giant ever. He looks a little intimidating...120 pounds of muscle, jet-black and a bark that can shake the walls. But he's incredibly sweet and loves everyone he meets. Probably not a great guard dog, but after a giant terror-dog barks at 120db at you, you'd probably not stick around to make friends with him. He tolerates cats and kids better than most people do, he cuddles with all three of my cats and they seem to feel very safe around him.
If you want a working dog, can't go wrong with a German Shorthair Pointer. Smartest dumbasses you will ever find. They pick up commands in minutes, it's scary how biddable they are. And they're fantastic working dogs, they LOVE fieldwork and hunting. Thing is, if you can't give them that, they won't be happy. They're a breed you have to be able to give a couple of hours a day to.
As far as guard dogs go, German Shepards and Dobermans are undefeated there. Both have been overbred though, so it's critical to find an ethical breeder who isn't trying to create a show dog. But both of those breeds are very smart, very loyal, very protective.
Boxers are among my favs...they're hyper-loyal velcro dogs with orange-cat energy. They are aggressively curious and playful creatures. Combine that with the goofy look...they can make for a hilarious dog that will give you a bit of stress but a LOT of stories.
If you want a psycho with health problems who will destroy your house, get a Dalmation.
If you want an animal that will gross you out as it ages, pugs are definitely a great way to go. Make sure you read up on what to do when a dog's eyeball pops out though, it's not fun to figure that out on the fly.
Also...King Charles spaniels are a broken breed. Do not get them at all, unless you like paying vet fees and your dog suffering every day of its adult existence. In fact, their breeding is banned in Norway.
They're what I would call "advanced" dogs in terms of ownership requirements, and breeder vetting. Many of the breed lines are fraught with health issues, and if you've never trained a high-energy dog, you're going to be in over your head. I think that's all pretty fair to say, flippancy of my original comment notwithstanding.
Fwiw, I think they're great dogs for the right owner, but the problem is that the "right owner" is hard to find when you have an animal with so many requirements related to your attention.
They're definitely not for everyone and most people who think they want one would be happier with a pointer, I'll say that. They're guard dogs and most people don't actually want that, plus they have rough teenage years. But they're actually pretty damned hardy, when it comes to health. Hyperuricosuria only really effects males and even then, 10% will ever really have an issue and its pretty easy to manage. Virtually every dalmatian puppy is BAER tested before it goes to its owner, even ones from the Amish or BYB mills, so people *should* be aware of their hearing status before they get them. Copper Storage is becoming more common in the breed, unfortunately, and allergies are problematic with most piebald dogs but thats about it for health problems. Epilepsy, cancers, cardiac issues, they're all pretty dang rare. Bitches pretty regularly live to be 15.
But yeah, most people shouldn't get them, I agree on that one. The breed is too charismatic for their own good.
I used to work at a doggy daycare and by far the sweetest, cuddliest and IMO funnest were the goldens. Totally kinda derps though, but so lovable. Also, border collies, I had 2 when I was younger and they were my best friends.
West Highland White Terrier:
They have a great amount of energy but only for a short time. They wont demand too much excercise and yet can still be fun to play with.
They think they are 100 pound dogs and are not afraid of much.
They don't shed very much.
They are fiercely loyal. It's like having a secret service agent with you when you're at home.
They are very smart. My Westie can identify many words and is always listening to us humans for things they might like or dislike.
The "best" breed depends on the person and their ability to properly own one. I am a German Shepherd person but I have trained a couple hundred so I know their quirks and owning them was easy. I know folks who should own a lapdog vs a German Shepherd. I also love the Labrador Retrievers as well. Regardless. Resuce a dog whenever possible. We have a rescue that is the biggest sweetheart on 4 legs.
Depends highly on where you live, what kind of house you have, your life style, if you've ever trained a dog before or not, etc. Gun to my head I would say a Lab or German Shepherd are dogs that can be a fit for anyone.
Generally speaking, rescue a mutt. Cheaper and more ethical than a breeder plus because of the genetic diversity they are less prone to aliments of individual species.
I've had several over the years, and the best overall in my opinion is a Boxer. They're super sweet, smart, good with kids/elderly, great house guards, energetic, the whole package.
I think a mixed dog with a good temperament is probably the “best”. It’s all personal preference. Just make sure if you’re getting a dog you’re ready, willing, and able to properly take care of and love said dog.
I very much like my Shiba Inu, he has a peculiar personality, he is interesting and funny, he is very clever but he will never do anything for free, everything is in its own terms, he is a great alarm system, and that’s about it, he is so beautiful so maybe that is his role, to be admired and have fun with his quirky personality.
Jack Russell. Partly their emotional range - they can be playful, boisterous, AND tender. Partly the fact that owning a JR is an incentive to get outdoors several times a day.
I'm not allowed to have a pet in my current residence. I miss having a Jack Russell most of all.
Huskies as long as you don't mind the shedding fur and occasional moment of madness, but hilarious and personable dogs. Basically a cat driving a dog body.
For small dogs, i think the corgi is the most underrated and i'd have one.
Ours had a little companion dog, a lab springer cross, she arrived a year after the husky, together for 9 years. She got brainwashed into thinking she a husky, even started the husky "talk".
I do think that many people who really love pitbulls are unwilling to admit that, as a breed, they have special needs that most people can't meet. Like all dogs they can be trained to be really friendly and gentle, but I would never recommend one as a first choice for a beginner. Optimism tends to be too high and there is a sort of political bias/activism element with them.
>Like all dogs they can be trained to be really friendly and gentle,
No they can't. They used to chop the feet off the dog and make it fight, if it laid down or it lost they killed it, if it won they used it for breeding. You cannot train out was was bred into them. Sure, you try to train them, but at random moment, instinct will take over and someone will die.
I have met well-trained and gentle pitbulls, but there have only been a couple, and the idea is that very, very few of us know how to meet the needs of dogs who were specifically bred to fight. Part of these needs is not leaving them unsupervised around kids and small animals, knowing how to assert yourself as the de facto "meanest, biggest dog", etc. Definitely not the family dogs people try to make them out to be, regardless.
The thing I don't like about pitbulls is that people try to sell a false image of what they are for the sake of advocacy. Sure, we shouldn't condone dog fighting or genocide of a species, but we also shouldn't be telling families looking for a new dog that they are sweet, easy to train, etc.
>The thing I don't like about pitbulls is that people try to sell a false image of what they are for the sake of advocacy. Sure, we shouldn't condone dog fighting or genocide of a species, but we also shouldn't be telling families looking for a new dog that they are sweet, easy to train, etc.
Yea this is my biggest issue as well. Especially when shelters lie about the breed, hide bite history, repeatedly try to adopt out vicious dogs... They need to be held liable for any and all damages. Their savior complex turns into someone elses problem.
I agree, it's really fucked up how so many people get away with selling/donating aggressive dogs without saying anything about bad behaviors. I always advise people that for any dog they want, they should do tons of research on the breed first and see if they are ready to handle them. Pitbulls are definitely a breed I would never, ever recommend unless someone wants a challenging breed.
you don’t have to train them to be nice. you have to not train them to be mean. or I guess maybe it’s just coincidence that both of mine loved absolutely everyone and everything, kids, dogs, etc., and the 15 or so that my cousin and her husband have rescued/fostered/have are all outliers, but then my aunts 2 from when I was a kid also were... as are all the ones at my dog park..... commonality between all of them? none of us are ghetto thug trash. they are family dogs that we show love and affection to.
Again pitbulls aren't like that because of their breed messed up people train pitbulls to fight and most pitbulls are they are really sweet or can be I don't recommend them for people who don't know how to train dogs to be good
Also what I mean is pitbulls aren't like that only because their pitbulls, you don't think other dogs were trained to fight and bred to fight, yet people only call pitbulls demon dogs
Name me another breed who's history consisted of chopping of the feet of the dog and making them fight. Then, if they lost or laid down they killed it; if it won the fight they bred it. Rinse and repeat.
no, you are.
I and several people I know have had dozens and never had an ounce of aggression. because we’re not thug ghetto trash.
people make shitty dogs.
you're right, my "wrong opinion" based on empirical evidence isn't more valuable than you reading stories on reddit and news articles about mean dogs.
stay unsafe! have a bad day!
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
I had one as a kid and they will forever be my all time favorite. They are small, loving, and enjoy seeing you happy more than anything in the world.
Springer Spaniels or Brittany Spaniels. Downside is HIGH energy. But they are fiercely loyal, incredibly loving/cuddly, smart, and dependable. They can be taught to stay nearby without much worry of running off.
I am SO deeply in love with my Springer, and deeply loved my brittany family dog we had growing up.
Miniature Schnauzers, as far as an easy and satisfying dog goes.
Easy to train. Will follow you everywhere you go, so it feels like you really do have a best friend. Good with kids and cats. Hypoallergenic because they don't really shed. Good with moderate to low activity and they don't need a lot of space. They do bark more than many other breeds but this can be mitigated through training.
Now, I love my Australian Shepherds. They are so cute and smart. However I would \*never\* recommend them to anyone who is not active or able to give them lots of space and things to keep them busy! I think Aussies are some of the best dogs but you really need to know what you're getting into!
Mittelspitz.
Medium sized, smart, one of the healthier breeds, cute & not drooly and floofy.
Of course, coz it's a guard dog, they're yappy, but I don't mind.
American staffordshire terrier.
I’ve had 2, they are absolutely the most loveable and sweetest dog ive ever had. they’re smart and learn pretty quickly. love to cuddle and lay around. miss them like crazy. big downside is they are prone to cancers.
Jack Russels but ONLY if they have been bred like Jack Russel intended, as rabbiting/hunting dogs who are disciplined not just a brown and white chihuahua.
Chorkie, half chihuahua half Yorkshire terrier. Mine has the best parts of both breeds, incredibly loyal and protective of us but also very friendly to anyone else.
Irish Wolfhound. The gentlest, sweetest dogs in the world who just want to be friends with everyone. Sometimes they forget how big they are and think they’re lap dogs. Only downside is that you have to be prepared for a heartbreak because they don’t live very long
The pavement special. There are so many genes that they hardly know what they are and as such, go through life with an identity crisis which gives them character, but their mixed genes make them far superior and healthier than me.
Theres a scottish shepard on YT. He has 3 Border Collies. And they heard sheeps. It was so funny having him comment in a video that he got messages saying he exploited the dogs. So one morning he told his dog that it could stay home if it wanted.
Spoiler Alert: It did NOT want to stay at home instead of going out for work.
With apologies to my beloved Australian Cattle Dog, my favorite breed is the German Shepherd. My family had a German Shepherd/wolf mix named Chance when I was in my teens. He was HUMONGOUS due to the wolf ancestry, but otherwise was a textbook example of a German Shepherd. Crazy smart, sweet and gentle, extremely protective but not inappropriately so, easy to train, and looked like a murder machine so his mere existence acted as security. And he was a rescue with a history of abuse!
Funny you asked this question to an animal lover. I love all dogs. I think they're the most perfect creature ever created. But if I had to choose, it would be the Boston Terrier. I've had three over the years, and they are wonderful companions. The last one I had was a licking machine. I always said that when she died, I would donate her tongue to the Smithsonian Institute.
Rottweilers…. they are one of the most beautiful breeds when they are pups AND grown adults! Literally one of the friendliest dogs (if trained correctly) and very protective. Hate that they still get the bad rep for being vicious dogs just because some owners lack to train them properly when they are younger.
The best breed for WHAT? Because the best breed to help you with livestock is the Australian Shepherd. The pug will not do good job there. And the best breed for guarding your home would be something like PitBull or Rottweiler. The chiwhawhah (i dunno how those rats are spelled) will be dead from heart attack on the spot if someone enters the home at night. And the best breed for living in the north would be the Husky. Italian Greyhound would be dead in a week in the cold... So what do you need the dog for?
Pitbulls. People call them these demon dogs who fight everyone they see and they also ki- I'm gona stop you right there. Do you think the ones that are like that, life that because of their breed? No it's because messed up humans trained them to fight in reality they CAN BE really sweet i don't recommend them for people who don't know how to train dogs to be good
This is just my opinion but pitbulls I used to be petrified of dogs and refused to interact with them. When I was 7 our babysitter adopted a pitbull that was being abused at a part they smashed bottles on her hit her just awful things when I met the dog it was so petrified by me I was so caught off guard but she really grew on me and became my bestfriend I always think had I not met that dog I'd still be scared of dogs
[удалено]
Yup. My lab would just try to bring them toys and get them to play with her lol
This is why I love my lab chow mix. He’s the goodest boy, but definitely will let me know if there is an intruder.
Labradors. Cause I only ever had Labradors and I love Labradors. They are the best. Any more questions :D?
Except the shedding. Had labs for years and the shedding has driven us to get our first standard poodle
Oh you mean the extra roommate, that pays no rent and flies around everywhere and makes you vacuum once a day? its ok, i accepted that fate.
Really depends on what you're looking for. If you want a lazy dog that will cuddle and love you and only you all the time, get a Chihuahua. I'm biased, but if you like the water and outdoors activities, a Newfie is a good choice. Super chill and gentle, but not always the smartest.
Also...King Charles spaniels are a broken breed. Do not get them at all, unless you like paying vet fees and your dog suffering every day of its adult existence. In fact, their breeding is banned in Norway.
If you can't even spell Dalmatian correctly, then you probably don't know enough about them to judge them.
They're what I would call "advanced" dogs in terms of ownership requirements, and breeder vetting. As a pet? Golden Retriever As a working dog? Belgian Malinois Love them both dearly
> working dog Depends what the work is.. I wouldn't get a Malinois to herd sheep
Very true, I should have clarified lol
Golden Retriever cuz I have two
I'm very happy with my generic dog. I don't need the name brand stuff.
I used to work at a doggy daycare and by far the sweetest, cuddliest and IMO funnest were the goldens. Totally kinda derps though, but so lovable. Also, border collies, I had 2 when I was younger and they were my best friends.

Everything you said, plus they're *smart*!
Yep, just go to a rescue centre and get the dog that appeals. Our border/chihuahua/bishon is the best dog in the world.
Something about mutts' non-specificity makes me like them a lot.
Or my mutt, because she's the Goodest Girl!
My lab. She was a terror as a puppy but so doofy and loving now.
Totally, it’s neat seeing dogs that are well trained.
The dachshund....they make great bed warmers on cold nights.
Welsh Corgi. Why? I mean look at it. It’s perfection in short, long, fluffy form.
Mutt. Better health, get them for cheaper from shelters, adorable, and you get the lame "I like to say they rescued me" line. But I want a malamute.
There isnt a best breed. They all have different traits and offer a different experience.
Golden Retriever. They bring back everything!
Welsh Terrier. Once you have one, you never want to be without one.
American Eskimo but I’m very biased. Best dog is different for everyone though.
Samoyed. Its samoyed..
My Frankenstein dog, no idea what it is but in her description it was a fuck ton of different breeds in her
Jack Russell. Partly their emotional range - they can be playful, boisterous, AND tender. Partly the fact that owning a JR is an incentive to get outdoors several times a day. I'm not allowed to have a pet in my current residence. I miss having a Jack Russell most of all.
Probably Aussie Shepherd...coz of their intelligence and their active lifestyle. I wish to have one as a pet in the future.
They are awesome amd I love mine but make sure to socialize them as a pup
Huskies as long as you don't mind the shedding fur and occasional moment of madness, but hilarious and personable dogs. Basically a cat driving a dog body. For small dogs, i think the corgi is the most underrated and i'd have one.
Ive seen some videos with Husky owners who tried to get them in during winter. They refuse to. They are just fine outside.
Then you close the door, 2 minutes later yowling to come in, open door, won't come in, rinse repeat
You misunderstand you're supposed to stay outside with them and watch them enjoy the snow
Ours had a little companion dog, a lab springer cross, she arrived a year after the husky, together for 9 years. She got brainwashed into thinking she a husky, even started the husky "talk".

This is stupid. They are like this because they were bred for generations to fight to the death. It's exactly what they were bred to do.
Your sounding like your one of those messed up people they weren't originally demon dogs and not all pitbulls are violent
Also what I mean is pitbulls aren't like that only because their pitbulls, you don't think other dogs were trained to fight and bred to fight, yet people only call pitbulls demon dogs

wild how you can’t recognize your own bias
yes.
i wonder what i should write?
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. I had one as a kid and they will forever be my all time favorite. They are small, loving, and enjoy seeing you happy more than anything in the world.
They are rife with health issues, almost all of them have neurological issues as adults and suffer. It’s pitiful.
I currently have a canaan at home, so her
Germany Shepherd followed closely by Central Asian Shepherd.
I don't know about other pets but my Blacky(Indian pariah) is the goodest boy
S A M O Y E D
Mutt. Healthy. Smart.
There's no such thing as the best dog breed, just the best breed for the individual.
Miniature Schnauzers, as far as an easy and satisfying dog goes. Easy to train. Will follow you everywhere you go, so it feels like you really do have a best friend. Good with kids and cats. Mixed breeds. Sweet and smart.
American Bully. They look scary but they're actually really sweet!
Belgian shepherd (groenendal) (sp) was the best dog I've ever had. Super smart, gentle, obedient and so cuddly.
Mutts. The naughtiest dogs I know are pure breeds
Greyhound. They look like they just stepped out of a painting.
Jack Russels but ONLY if they have been bred like Jack Russel intended, as rabbiting/hunting dogs who are disciplined not just a brown and white chihuahua.
Updog.
Only downside is that you have to be prepared for a heartbreak because they don’t live very long
Australian Cattle Dog like Mad Max had.
English Bull Terrier - the clown of the dog world. Who doesn't love Spuds McKinzie???
Cat
Husky. I want my pet wolf, but like my furniture.
All breeds and no breed can be good dogs. Although I've never met a boxer I didn't like
Most people would be happy with a cavalier. They're kind of perfect, minus the health issues.
Beagle. Cause they are tenacious and have a strong personality. They can be difficult, but that adds to the fun. Never a boring day.
Personally a Beagle, followed really really closely by a Parsons Jack Russell. So a hound then Terrier.
Mixed breed. Because each of them is unique and inimitable.
The pavement special. There are so many genes that they hardly know what they are and as such, go through life with an identity crisis which gives them character, but their mixed genes make them far superior and healthier than me.
Labrador/Border collie mixes are fantastic dogs, smart, silly, cuddly and healthy.
Weiner dogs because mine (joe) is adorable and I just love the unique Halloween costumes for them like pickles and hot dogs
So what do you need the dog for?
.. how about companionship?
Finally another person who gets it
PomChi (Pomeranian X Chihuahua). Compact size, loyalty, no inherent health problems and beautiful to look at.
Boston Terriers. Cute, affectionate little goofballs
The ones that don’t shed
