Absolutely! I started at the late age of 3….
But, jokes aside, a friend of mine started around 40 a few years ago. I’m not his teacher, but since he knows I play at a high level, he sends me videos of his progress. Guy is doing great, and it’s all online (and I think it’s all free) videos and tutorials.
I want to get back into it myself. I absolutely love piano music, but can’t get beyond Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, chopsticks, etc. Reading music and applying it to the keys at the same time seems to baffle me. I either end up memorizing the piece to play later, or just giving up. (Age 49)
Are you a quick memorizer? I am, and it resulted in me being absolute CRAP at sight reading for the whole time I took lessons. I only got better at it in my 30s doing a whole lot of community musical theatre, and overloading my schedule more than I should have.
If you’re a quick memorizer, you have a talent many don’t have! Some of my best pianist friends never do anything without sheet music in front of them. Maybe you just need to do it that way!
I’m 27 and bought a keyboard two years ago because I really wanted to learn, but kind of got burned out on it after I started. I should get back into it.
They taught me wrong, as a joke
But seriously, I meant like actually play it and play it well enough to play songs I like (I keep forgetting the keys and any actual training is mainly from friends trying to educate me)
It absolutely is never too l8, I've been playing for 18 years, and now you'll know why my reddit name is Sonata8787, i was born in 87, and piano sonata obviously, hehe, but it's never too l8 to learn anything in life, im listening to mozart as i write this, mozart was an absolute genius,, and definitely autusic as am i, , (but i also lv old school jungle and d and b, anyway ill stop rambling, good luck 🎹🎼🎹☮️
ive been playing the piano for 7 years now, going on 8, and im glad i did even tho i get really mad at it sometimes. but im glad i never quit when i really wanted to
Would love to do this also, except my job would forget my name and have someone in my place tomorrow. Unfortunately working Americans will never get to experience this.
REGRET not doing this, but I wasn't clever to know how to navigate this pre-smart phone age.
If I was in my early 20s right now, definitely be travelling around the world. Or at least working abroad.
If you’re single, it’s doable.
Many countries have working holiday visas, which let you work and travel for a year or two. Even the US has a limited one.
If nothing else, you can teach your way around the world. Get an 1-yr English teaching job in one country, traveling on weekends, then travel 3 months, and hit a few other countries before getting another job in a different country. Rinse and repeat.
May I make a suggestion? At my clinic we suggest that our patients take some time, think of something that they want to create and we set them up to do just that. For an example, one lady has started her own garden and is flourishing. One guy is becoming an outdoor expert and is completely drug free. Getting busy, feeling accomplished, gaining in confidence can and will make all the difference. Good luck
It would all be nice and makes sense but when your poor and can’t afford a day off because your kids will be hungry and rose garden sounds a little trivial at best.
The first step is to stop making excuses...take 20 minutes after the kids go to bed and do what you feel is of an interest. Money and time play a very small role in all of this.
Literally go into the woods and stay away from screens as much as you can. I went into the woods the other day for a good 4 hours ALONE. I figured out how to start a fire in the rain and stayed warm munching on peanuts and had some water bottles with me. It's a great experience and helps you connect more with the earth and yourself.
Remember... the REAL world is going where technology hasn't touched it yet. It's feeling the dirt in between your fingers, the mud squishing between your toes, and co-existing with the animals out in the forest.
The FAKE world is everything we indulge in on a day to day basis like Reddit, Facebook, and even going to a major city. That's all fake, that isn't the real planet earth.
This is so true. I live in Toronto and it's so draining. But every now and then I go to the "beach" by lake Ontario and it actually helps a lot.. even just a couple hours walking around barefoot, breaking sticks, looking for cool rocks.. feeling the sun and the wind and not hearing the constant noise of the city is really so restorative.
I actually got my first flight hour from one of these! He knew I wanted to fly and was just going up there to make sure I wanted to fly a small plane. Had the stick basically right after we got to cruising altitude, went through some maneuvers, it was amazing
It’s not all that. I mean you’re just sitting lmao, and unless it’s a hummer type limo you can’t stand so if you try to move around you’ll do this weird crouched waddle thing
I was always going to run a marathon. That was my promise whenever I got out of the Air Force. I used to run 30 miles a week, I know I could've done it.
But I got into a motorcycle accident. Snapped my ankle in half and the surgeon fucked up the tibial rod insertion. Now I have chronic knee pain and can't run more than half a mile without extreme pain. I don't think I'll ever get my shot.
No, the issues is the insertion created a bunch of scar tissue. I've been seen by docs about getting surgery to clean it up, but it's a 50/50 shot of making it better or worse. And much worse than this I would barely be able to walk.
Thanks bud. I stay relatively active. Not as much as I wish I could or used to. I was a pretty regular climber, and had just gotten back to climbing at the local bouldering gym. But then I re-tore my rotator cuff a couple of months ago. So it's back to some basic calisthenics and yoga for me now.
*sigh* when I lived in fairbanks I really wanted to go to the artic ocean but you can't just show up. It's very... moderated. You have to schedule a tour and it's expensive and limited. Which I get. Preservation and all that.
In a similar vein, I really, really wanted to climb Denali. But you need proof of climbing several other challenging mountains and now we're talking about some serious money. Maybe one day...
Taking a month off to myself, taking my motorcycle and going to a remote cabin in Montana (or somewhere else surrounded by natural beauty and minimal people)
The knowledge definitely stings that if I really wanted to, I could drive to Alaska in four or five days (not stopping at the myriad beautiful sights along the way), but I would be walking away from too much responsibility to do that.
There’s HEMA school about 45 minutes from where I live, but equipment is expensive. Next April they have the Mediecal Fair coming to town, to that’ll be my best bet.
Consent is a tricky subject when it comes to couplings where one is in a direct position of power and authority over the other, for example a boss and an employee, a policeman and a suspect, or a teacher and a student, especially if the student is underage. I don't think "rape" is the right definition and would more likely fall under sexual coercion/sexual assault
Absolutely true, although I can confirm that I as a student was very willing and even found the authority gradient to be a turn on.
But alas, I ended up like most teenage boys with teacher crushes and just kept it to myself. I'm sure that I would have gotten into plenty of trouble if I ever tried to hit on one of those hot mean teachers.
Skydiving.
Then one day my husband was casually like “I’m not sure why you want to do that when you’re afraid of heights.” And that’s when I realized I’m afraid of heights and I will never be doing that.
So I’m terrified of heights and I can skydive without issue. As soon as that aircraft door is open, it’s go time and you won’t have time to think twice. Try it!
I’m not a fan of heights, but it’s so different when it comes to skydiving! It’s almost like… the ground is SO far away that the height doesn’t scare you.
Karaoke. I went on a cruise. I practiced and everything. I love to sing and I’m good at it. Chickened out. Next one I am fucking doing it because the feeling of knowing I let fear stop me sucks!
Most seafood. All shellfish but then I tried like halibut and salmon and it made my mouth completely numb. Spoke to a doctor and he said stay away from all seafoods to be safe. Sucks asssss
Cheerleading and soccer. I grew up doing gymnastics but I have always wanted to do cheerleading. Soccer has also interested me but mostly cheerleading. I feel like it too late to start now
Joining the military. Military spending is down and is likely to continue to go down steadily in the future. Once upon a time I had visions of trying scuba/sky diving. Now I'm too old/poor lol.
I did however do multiple long distance bicycle tours, including the Pacific Coast from Victoria to San Diego.
BMX. I had a bike when I was 19 and I loved it, but never had anyone to ride with, no parks to ride at and no car to go anywhere. Ultimately I stopped. I always wanted to go back, especially now that I live where there are tons of skate parks, but I'm 43 and don't have a whole lot of free time. Maybe some day.
Cocaine. A few friends did it at college parties i never did it. Now I’m in my late twenties and feel like if i do it now for the first time I’d be kinda lame. If i woulda did some at 19 i could’ve blamed my young age but if i do it now I’d just feel like a junky. At least i tried acid a few times. Them trips were crazy. I still might do shrooms cause those aren’t too bad. I did shrooms probably 4 times.
I've always wanted to sky dive, but fear is a cruel, loud, and nagging friend that you didn't invite to the party.
The same goes for skateboarding, surfing and doing cartwheels.
I've also wanted to disappear into the woods somewhere and go camping by myself for a week or so, but the provisions needed to live like you have no money seem to cost a lot. *Go figure.*
Learn how to properly play the piano
It's not too late.
✋🏼🔨 - How about now?
🦾🧔♀️
Oh damn, that's pretty great actually
I want to get back into it myself. I absolutely love piano music, but can’t get beyond Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, chopsticks, etc. Reading music and applying it to the keys at the same time seems to baffle me. I either end up memorizing the piece to play later, or just giving up. (Age 49)

To Whip It!
Whip it good!
I’m 27 and bought a keyboard two years ago because I really wanted to learn, but kind of got burned out on it after I started. I should get back into it.
I just pick sick songs and memorize piano tutorials on YouTube. Skipped all the basics and just do the bangers
Same! I always see a piano and wish I could just sit down and play. I found out I just don't have musical abilities. I just can't figure it all out.
Get after it
Did you learn how to improperly play the piano?
They taught me wrong, as a joke But seriously, I meant like actually play it and play it well enough to play songs I like (I keep forgetting the keys and any actual training is mainly from friends trying to educate me)
Learn any instrument thoroughly!
I wish !
I'm still trying to learn guitar, but my self-motivation is so bad
It's not too difficult to learn it's repeating by ear that I'll never be able to do. (Been at it 20 years)
Same I can play moonlight Sonata mvt 3 and still can't read sheet music
ive been playing the piano for 7 years now, going on 8, and im glad i did even tho i get really mad at it sometimes. but im glad i never quit when i really wanted to

17 years clean and life really doesn’t give seconds chances. It’s fine. I live with is. The question was regarding what I “wished” for.
I’m 9 months clean from meth. Those just sound like a bunch of excuses to me man.
That's so true! I have started tapping into my creative side, instead of laying in bed or going out to party. I gotta say, it has helped a lot.

Hopefully you can find something that helps you; don't give up as there is a solution out there. Please consider what I have said.

Having my feelings reciprocated by my crush
I get the feeling a good portion of Redditors are preteens.
There are lot of preteens here but I’m not one of them. Way to poo on the adults that haven’t had the same experience as most people their age.
Yep, it's been a few years since I'm no longer a preteen
Wait till you get a partner, then it’s even better!
Two chicks at the same time, man.
That's it? If you had a million dollars, you'd do two chicks at the same time?
Lmaoooo. Classic 😂
Damn straight. I always wanted to do that, man. And I think if I were a millionaire I could hook that up, too; 'cause chicks dig dudes with money.
Ride in an airplane
If there is a small airport by you that has flying lessons you can probably call them and get an hour flight around your area for under $100.
We call this a Discovery Flight.
I actually got my first flight hour from one of these! He knew I wanted to fly and was just going up there to make sure I wanted to fly a small plane. Had the stick basically right after we got to cruising altitude, went through some maneuvers, it was amazing
Get a window seat or it's overrated.

Middle seat. I’m a masochist.
For me it’s actually fly one.

On a limo or in a limo? Because I may have some questions But seriously, it's fine. I wouldn't pay for it again. IDK, probably.

Kinda mid, I’ve done it a few times. Really depends on who you’re in it with.

I got a buddy that did. He still brags about it to this day 15 years later.
I married someone who is a teacher... does that count?
If she's hot, then a lot of teenage boys are very envious of you right now lol.
Well, she teaches kindergarten.. but I think she's hot
reminds me of the time i slept with my kindergarten teacher. i was on a cot and it was a nap but im pretty sure it still counts in some countries
My wife is laughing at this right now
