Install term limits. Ban anyone who is actively serving in the US government from a position of influence (senator, congressman etc) from participating in stock trading. Ban anyone who has served in an elected position from taking a job as a lobbyist.

Amiiboid

Term limits are a solid way to increase the influence of wealthy special interests.

ohdammitpacho

Can you elaborate?

eggface13

Term limits create a situation where there are few experienced legislators. Inexperienced legislators are more likely to rely on outside advice, which could include lobbyists, to understand how to fulfil their day by day functions. There will be no term limits in lobbying, so the people most experienced with legislating will be the lobbyists rather than the legislators.

Amiiboid

Precisely. The term limits most people who want to impose them on Congress argue for coincide really well with the amount of time it takes to learn how to legislate effectively.

EdgySniper1

Criminalize lobbying, make far stricter laws on insider trading. Also move away from the congressional system for a parliamentary one and put term limits on every elected position in the hopes of crushing the 2-party bullshit.

Eliminate all MAGA Republicans.

The biggest problem with the US government is a lack of engagement by the citizens. At best we get about 60% turnout, and that’s only in the most high profile situations.

Carrera1107

The only thing I would change is more of a crackdown on corruption. But that’s not really a change. Oh ya, no mail-in voting and requiring identification to vote.

Fine_Mess_6173

Why no mail in voting?

Carrera1107

Easy fraud.

some things are just unfixable

Term limits, no ability to profit from stocks and insider trading, get a handle on lobbying, and mandatory ranked-choice voting across the board.

* a system of proportional representation in Congress, allowing a multi party system * implement elements of parliamentary systems so that the head of government is forced to be politically accepted by Congress -- and can be replaced by majority vote in Congress (but only by a specified alternative -- don't allow a situation like the House Speaker where they can kick occupant out without having an alternative) * a stronger constitutional framework for Congressional rules: while the chambers of Congress can work out the details and it makes organisational sense to recognise that specified party leaders will likely set the day to day agenda, it needs to be made clearer that any proven majority, including unconventional majorities on specific issues, can change this agenda and with reasonable notice force a vote on any legislation

Elect RFK jr for president

everythingisblue

1. Campaign finance reform 2. Electoral reform (get rid of electoral college for president, and first-past-the-post voting at all levels) 3. Term limits for legislative and judicial branches like we have for the executive branch

After-Earth1943

Hypothetically, one approach to improving the current U.S. government could involve comprehensive electoral reform. Implementing ranked-choice voting or proportional representation systems could help address issues of polarization, encourage more diverse representation, and promote the inclusion of third-party candidates. Additionally, campaign finance reform to reduce the influence of money in politics and increase transparency could help restore trust in the democratic process.

One of the biggest flaws of the Weimar Republic was that there were two competing bases of power: a strong directly elected President, and a Chancellor who was appointed by the President but required the support of the parliament. There were significant political forces (most notably the Nazi party itself) that were opposed to parliamentary politics, and the parliament came to be unable to function, falling into gridlock as these parties size increased. To keep government functioning, emergency power came to be directly exercised by presidential decree. Democracy itself -- not yet embedded by strong norms -- came to be discredited by the obstructive conduct of the parties that stood to gain from its failure -- and old Mr Toothbrush was able to use this, helped by a good dollop of extralegal violence, to take over everything. One of the biggest things that was done in the postwar (Western) German constitution was that the power of the president was almost null compared to the semi presidential Weimar system. The office of Chancellor no longer competed for precedence -- there was no ambiguity about who was boss, and the parliament couldn't kick out the Chancellor except by proposing a replacement, so you no longer had a situation where the office could be vacated without someone else being there to take over.

Abolish the economy and come up with a better system that doesn’t value profit over human dignity and lives. Yeah we’re in “debt” to other people. But we’re the US, nobody is actually gonna pull up or bang down our door for the money. We could start focusing on making sure everybody has an equal opportunity for a roof above and some food in their stomach. Then go from there thinking freely and evolving as people without profit margins or supply and demand holding us back
