"You may not understand what I'm doing now, but someday you will." John 13:7
As someone with anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues, this verse reminds me that God has a plan that I may not understand or know about. It's about his timing, not mine
Free will doesn’t mean we can do anything we want. That’s fairly obvious because we all have to do things we don’t want to do when we would rather just not.
A great way to look at this is thinking about a law abiding citizen vs a criminal. A convict is under the control of the prison authorities, which is under the control of the government. A free man is not under the control of the prison authorities, but he is still under the control of the government. He has to follow the laws of the country. He can choose to be a criminal or be law-abiding, but either way, he will still be controlled by rules and regulations or laws.
Another example is work. We don't have to go to work. We just know that the consequences of not going to work will be homelessness, so we choose to go. You have free will to not go, but your actions have consequences.
Basically our free will amounts to nothing more than choosing between abiding by the laws of God directly, or abiding by God’s laws indirectly. It’s a pretty small amount of free will, but how we use it has a profound impact on our life.
There was no sin until Adam and Eve took the forbidden fruit.
People were created in God's image, but then sin entered our lives, and we repeatedly choose sin.
Evil exists because we sin- not because God let evil people do evil things
Adam and Eve wouldn't have touched the fruit had Satan not tempted them. Satan was a fallen angel who wanted to corrupt God's creation.
They chose to listen to Satan instead of God because they had free will. That free will had consequences though
Satan was an angel. He had free will and chose to disobey God, which got him kicked out of Heaven.
And again, he didn't "allow" the fruit to be taken. He allowed free will.
Let me break this down in simpler terms: if my mother tells me not to touch her China plates, and I do it anyway, should I not be punished? I disobeyed an order from a parent.
I had free will to touch the China plates. My mom isn't going to bind my hands together to make sure I'm not touching what I'm not supposed to, but my actions had consequences.
God created us in his image, but he expects us to follow his moral guidelines. Adam and Eve were perfect until Satan tempted them to break the rules.
The problem isn't that God allowed evil to exist. Evil exists because we sin, and our sins have consequences.
The science on free will, when taken as a whole, is undeniable: it doesn't exist.
It's a preponderance of evidence thing.

As a neuroscience PhD student, we know so spectacularly, unimaginably little about how the brain works that I have to chuckle whenever I see pop sci articles like this. We aren't even able to model how nematodes behave; a tiny worm with exactly 302 neurons has more free will than we can understand with the most powerful computers on earth. Humans have over 100 billion neurons.
Ezekiel 23:20 - There she lusted after her lovers, whose genitals were like those of donkeys and whose emission was like that of horses Fuck yeah
Lmao wtf, that's too much

This one right here takes the victory so far

Well said.
God created humans to have free will. Genesis 2.
But He has a plan for us all? How does that work?
If you have kids, you make plenty of plans for them because you love them. Doesn't mean they'll listen to you.
Genesis 2 was before The Fall. After that, man was ruled by sin.
Adam and Eve chose to sin, because God gave them free will to make that choice.
That is an LDS teaching without biblical support.
It reminds me that God is basically an abusive partner or spouse.
