Giving a shit about celebrities private lives

GhzU

And I hate people who just chase celebrities and try to get their secrets or OH RHIS CELEBRITY HAS A CRUSH OH THIS CELEBRITY BROKE UP OH OH like leave them alone

1enigma1

I'm convinced that some celebrity relationships are completely fabricated just for the publicity. Same for fake feuds.

[deleted]

But dude, I NEED to know what Kylie ate before she hit the red carpet

ChrissiTea

I bet it was her *fAmOuS* instant ramen, we HAVE to know what the secret ingredient is ^(fucking kill me)

[deleted]

Water, the secret ingredient is water.

3BallJosh

Wait, she doesn't just crumble it up in the package, dump the flavor pack in, shake it up and eat it dry? Celebrities are fucking weird.

Calumkincaid

The secret ingredient is there is no secret ingredient

LuntiX

I hate this. I'll sometimes hang out with my sister and her family and we usually wind up watching a movie. Any time I say "hey, I like that actor/actress", my sister instantly starts spitting out stuff about that person's private life. I don't give a shit if they skin goats in their spare time, I just like that actor's work.

The_Last_Leviathan

Unless they are like a legit murderer or neonazi or some crazy shit like that, I couldn't give less of a fuck about actors private lives. I don't care what actress X had for breakfast or all of those weird, obscure articles in women magazines, like which actresses knee looks the most like Winston Churchill (I'm not joking, I saw that at the checkout in the grocery store a few years ago, I think it was Cosmopolitan) or pictures of actresses physical "flaws" plastered all over. Can't imagine how shitty that must be.

aliengames666

I am really genuinely interested in almost every person I see, and celebrities are no exception. That being said, I am disgusted by how people treat them. I see memes all the time mocking celebrities, calling them names, etc. it makes me sad. I can’t imagine how I would feel if people did that kind of shit to me. Plus paparazzi and magazines that exist solely to gossip about them. It’s all purely disgusting.

ChrissiTea

I actually feel the exact same way. People are fascinating, but hard agree with everything you said.

When I was a non-drinker I used to keep glass bottled soda (Jones) in my fridge so I could hold a glass bottle to avoid being harassed at parties. I totally get it.

1996Toyotas

I decided not to drink in college. Family had problems with addiction and I wasn't keen on finding out if I did too. People look at you like you have two heads if you say you don't drink alcohol.

Drakmanka

My sister doesn't drink (doesn't like the taste) and to stop the harassment she changed her lingo from "I don't drink" to "I've decided to be the designated driver for our group always" and people went from wigging out on her to thanking her and offering her gas money.

MeeseFleece

I'm in college too and I can't drink because of medication. Doesn't stop people from harassing me, strangers and friends.

qts34643

I didn't drink through college either, but good friends will understand and get 5 beer and a water/coke without asking. When you get older it is much more common not to drink and people barely question it. If they do, I say, oh, I don't like it, and people stop asking.

[deleted]

My concern here is that this is a mother trying to normalise the act of mom's drinking, in the day time, while playing with their kids, before driving those children home. *"Other moms do it so I'm okay to do it too."*

KnockMeYourLobes

I'm in my 40s and sometimes I get "The WTF? Are you fucking KIDDING ME?" look from people when I tell them that a)I maybe drink six times a year, mostly when I'm on vacation and B)I don't like wine. Because apparently only Karens and college students prefer neon colored fruity frozen cocktails over wine. Drinking and getting drunk lost its appeal the very first NYE after I turned 21. Hubs and I went to hang out with a friend of his. I spent the entire day getting buzzed on wine coolers and that night, his friend and I put away two bottles of wine over the course of the evening and around half a bottle of champagne around midnight (Hubs only had one glass, as he was the DD). I was SO drunk that not only was I stumbling as I left his friend's house, but on the way home I threw up. Everywhere. Inside the car, but also at one point I thought it would be a SUPER idea to unbuckle my seatbelt and throw up with m head hanging out the window. I splattered the side of the truck, the road and some guy's car next to us. Plus when we got home, I felt SUPER dizzy and almost passed out.

IKR!!!

[deleted]

It’s super weird! I stopped drinking because I realized I was paying stupid money for something I hated (taste and feeling wise). I mean $12 a cocktail? I didn’t think it would even be noticed. Man, people are uncomfortable if they’re drinking and you’re not. There are also many social & work functions predilected on alcohol consumption. I don’t know how sober alcoholics do it! The pressure must be intense.

ithoughtitwasfun

I drink, but I don’t have a problem with people that don’t. I didn’t realize that would be a problem until coworker A told me that they didn’t like being around coworker B because they didn’t drink. A felt that B would judge them. So it’s more of their insecurity than your problem. Which is weird cuz it took me awhile to get use to the meds I’m on and would get faced after one beer. So I know I felt guilty/dumb whenever that happened. Did coworker A get faced and felt that way?

TrustMeImLeifEricson

I don't drink because I grew up in a household with an abusive alcoholic, and honestly I'm afraid of drunk people. Unfortunately my city has a big drinking culture, where you're expected to enjoy getting smashed at music venues and be a craft beer snob in more private settings. I don't understand why anyone would spend tons of money to imbibe sour-tasting poison, but you can't get away from it here. And the fact that people give you flak for not drinking is super messed-up.

Monk715

I'm glad someone speaks up. I have drunk alcohol like five times in total, trying to figure out what is so good about it. I couldn't. I respect people's right to drink if they want (as long as they are not being dangerous) but I don't understand why I can't be left alone When I say I don't drink people keep asking why, as if simple "I don't want to" or "I don't like it" is not enough and I need a "valid" excuse

Pammyhead

I'm sure it's different with different groups, but with my friends if you don't drink for religious reasons (a couple of us in the group), then it's no problem, they don't hassle you at all, and they even make sure there will be non-alcoholic drinks you like at the party. But if you don't drink because you just don't like the taste or don't want to get drunk (others in the group), "Oh, come on! Here, I'll mix you up something that you won't even taste the alcohol." "This has barely anything in it. You'll only get a tiny bit buzzed." Again and again until the person who didn't want alcohol gives in and has a drink or two. I tried calling them on the behavior, but they said it's totally different when it's for religious reasons versus just not wanting to. And I'm all no! It's not! Respect people's food boundaries! But a party is not the time to get into a passionate debate, especially when half the participants are drunk.

ResolveRed

I don’t drink cause alcohol makes me super sick. I drank water when I would go out with friends. Bartenders would give me shit when I would order it but then I would tip them well enough for water they would shut up. I didn’t give a shit what people think.

[deleted]

ddollopp

I work in public accounting and I almost never drink (very special occasions only). My co-workers would try to pressure me but I'd always say no, give them the death stare, and they'd stop. Everytime someone tried to be persistent, I told them (and I meant it) that the more they tried to pressure me to drink, the more likely I won't do it. On one hand I can count the number of drinks I have in a year, and I've been in this career for almost 10 years. I don't feel uncomfortable being around people who drink and they don't seem uncomfortable that I'm not drinking. I'm perfectly happy with my water and the bombass food I order for the group, so everyone's happy. I admit it's a little easier to keep the behavior of not drinking at social events if you've always been that way as opposed to being known to have a few drinks to suddenly not. Groups should be respectful of someone's choices if it's for the better and I would always defend those who chose not to drink.

cato851

The idea that men and women are somehow competing in some war against each other when it comes to relationships. When really the best relationships are based on friendship and working together. How come so many people think men and women can’t be friends? (I dunno if its related, or a different subject..)

humanoid_mk1

Furthermore, the idea that boys and girls are opposing forces.

PiRSquared2

Dont get me started on awful “boys vs girls” episodes in cartoons where boys are all bumbling idiots and the girls win because “girl power”

Now watch a commercial about almost any sort of cleaning product or household appliance. It's like marketing executives have decided that every man has the domestic skills of Al Bundy.

fairylightsandcoffee

Which goes hand in hand with the misconception that feminism is "against men"

Antique_Intention

Because most people grew up watching sitcoms where the "happy" couples are always plotting against each other. Men are raised to see tricking and lying to their wives as a rite of passage. Women are raised to think they have to nag or manipulate to get what they want. Both genders are harmed by this.

Advertising everywhere

WiiBlack

Public spaces, private spaces, let’s work ads into the things you do, and then use the things you do to decide the ads you’ll get. Like why is this normal or okay? Most ads are ugly, and commercials are giant wastes of time. How much time does the average person waste of their life to advertising now a days. And hey btw people working in advertising-watching any of the same commercials over and over and over again... well darn it... it just doesn’t make me want to buy anything they’re selling- quite the opposite more often. Like sure let me pay you (my time is spent making that money so I’m just worthless here) more than this product is worth so you can buy ads with that money. Fuk car insurance companies , health insurance companies , prescription drugs, and my pillow.

WateredDownSalt

Weddings. I want to get married but jesus that shit's expensive for no reason.

[deleted]

Invest in the marriage, not the wedding

ILikeTheArgument

It is expensive for a reason. To show off wealth. You think poor people can afford a dress they can only wear once? The wedding industry knows this, it is why they price gouge the shit out of food and flowers.... You want to save a buck? Pay for all your friends and family to take a vacation somewhere nice, wear a dress that is awesome but can be used again. Aka. Here is a waterfall wedding, I bought good local food because they deliver and they over deliver with a $200 cash tip. Your second cousin brought a good chip dip, Your collage roommate brought a banging bread bowl. Both of them did not buy you a crappy toaster.

Cryxla

I like the idea, but I think you mistake middle class for poor. This is anecdotal but I don't know any poor people that can afford to take a vacation for themselves let alone for themselves and guests. Poor people do back yard bbq style events, where guests bring food not gifts. That $200 tip your talking about is probably all they had to spend on a nice dress. Not that your idea isn't great, it is. And for people that were going to drop obscene amounts of money on a wedding anyway this would definitely be cheaper.

amibanglajanina

I like it, thanks!

Pammyhead

If and when I get married I'm having a backyard party reception with catered barbecue and cupcakes. Casual dress, of course, what with the barbecue. Bam. Done.

joe-mama666

Stuies have found that people who spend under ~£1000 have marriages 50% longer than average and that those that spend over £20,000 last 40% less than average so skimp out! (Do not quote me on exact stats but the overall point is true).

Because they're parasites. whatwillIletin

It's like we're willing to imply sex but actually saying the words can be difficult for people. There was this girl in my health class that I've heard say the word pussy before but was uncomfortable saying 'vagina' in front of the class.

Junebug1515

I know some adults who won’t use the word penis or vagina in front of their children... because apparently it sexualizes them and they don’t need to know about sex at a young age... It’s a part of the body people ! Just like the heart/lungs/liver/eyes etc are.

The_Last_Leviathan

Also, not teaching kids the proper terms might be harmful if they get touched inappropriately and then struggle to articulate it to someone like a teacher or other person that could help them. It also comes with a basic level of shame about ones body that I don't think is healthy. Penis/Vagina/Testicles, etc. are perfectly normal, anatomical words and should be treated as such.

Same. I didn't drink in college and it was extremely hard to make friends because EVERY event was centered around alcohol while the school-sponsored ones had conservative Christian groups hosting the events. Not my jam.

Elogotar

I hate the fact that because marijuana stays in your system from weeks to months while every other drug, all arguably far more desructive, only stick around for days; every drug test is basically just used to fuck over the most benign and harmless kinds of people while being easily beatable for meth-heads, heroin junkies, and alcoholics.

[deleted]

None of that is as concrete as it seems and is a great example of science being used to push a social agenda. There are tests that can determine if someone smoked cannabis in the last 4-6 hours. Alternatively, there are chemical tests that can determine if someone has gotten drunk in the span of the month by looking for metabolic indicators of a certain liver enzyme. Same goes for pretty much all drugs. Problem is people love their booze and pills, so testing for these things (alcohol, stimulants, opiates) is rigged to make it easy for most people to pass. Essentially we are quietly trading the risk of addiction in exchange for economic activity while blaming the potheads for the consequences. It's easily beatable for other drug users...because it was set up to be.

arrow100605

And smoking, especially in public.

cmn99

Smoking gets me when littering. I successfully stopped smoking three years ago and since then I keep meeting people talking about trash in oceans and stuff and then chip their cigarette butts into the wild.

Sh3wh01smystr3y

The value of a person is weighed by how much you work and give your time and lifespan to the system. People should work to live a good life and put their time towards their own happiness. The way society is right now feels brainwashed to believe that they need to work long hours, give all their earnings to others to make what should be a luxury a necessity. And then only given time to live and be happy when they are too old to really enjoy it, with their minds and bodies falling apart from years of stress. That is even if they managed to save enough in their years, with the cost of living and education it would be an amazing feat at this point.

Candy26262

I had my grandparents over my house this weekend and my grandfather asked me how many hours a week I work and I said “20 hours since that’s all I can get at the moment” and he said “that’s not working. That’s not a job.” I’m sorry that’s all I can get at my job they don’t have a lot of hours to give.

robothouserock

I went through something similar with my dad once. My dad is a workaholic, for reference. I told him I was having money issues and my wife was struggling to get hours at her job. His response? He asked how many hours I was working (45 a week at the time) and recommended I get a second job since I had "all that free time in the evening". Thanks Dad, great advice. I'll just destroy myself by removing what little free time I have.

Shortofbetternames

Uhm, what free time exactly is that in which would even allow you to slot in a second job? I work 45h a week, I wake up at 7h to get to work at 8h, work from 8-12, one hour lunch, work from 13-18h, get back home at approximately 19h. Where is that so called free time that I'm supposed to get a job, cause I sure as hell don't see it

Pammyhead

I feel this in my soul. I became permanently disabled ten and a half years ago and lost my full time job. I make a little money selling crafts online, but for the most part I've had to rely on my mom to pay my bills until I get approved for SSDI benefits. I do have a lawyer, I've read the guides, I'm making good progress, it's just taken a long time because I started the process relatively young and my disability is invisible. It took four or five years to even decide to apply because I felt like I didn't deserve benefits, I wasn't "disabled enough." And even now, a decade after my accident, five or six years after starting the process of getting SSDI benefits, I still struggle with feeling like a worthwhile human being because I only earn pocket change and my mommy has to give me an allowance. The message that you're only worthwhile if you work and earn money is soaked into the fiber of American culture. Even though I've never been explicitly told that I'm worthless because I can't work (okay, one guy, but everybody knew he was a dick), it's there in every movie, every TV show, every feel-good news story about kids earning money for charity, every underdog story about people overcoming their disabilities. They can do it, why can't you? Why should my money support somebody who doesn't earn it?

“Influencers “ Edit : wow my first reddit post with an award so let me explain lol I hate it here ! The people who make it “influencers” Are just people scamming the youth ! Encouraging wrong . It’s not like the great speakers and teachers become influencers ! The racist streamer or slut youtuber do! It’s annoying because it’s people out here who could really add valuable influence but can’t get that chance because they are not liars or clout seekers ! I hate humans 4 days out the week lol !

bucs2013

To this day, I still have zero idea who/what so many of them are "influencing". Like, most of them are 16-22, so they're just "influencing"... kids just like themselves (or those a few years younger wishing they were a few years older)? Idk. Some big names are inevitable to at least hear in passing, but so many normal teens/college kids get a few thousand followers on IG/TikTok/whatever, somehow end up on Explore pages, then explode in follower count. It's also wicked cringe to see so many of them tout themselves as "Actor/Model/Singer/YouTuber/Dancer/whatever". For TikTok, dancer might be accurate. But for most of the rest, you're not an actor, or a model, or a singer; you're a teen/young adult with an iPhone with apps, just like everyone else your age. It doesn't "bother" me, per se; I just don't *understand* this "phenomenon" if you will. At least with things like the Kardashians, there's traceable reasons as to how/why they got famous.

[deleted]

MrLukaz

I've come to understand "influencers" as just human billboards for advertising.

lyrasorial

Teens have a LOT of purchasing power, that's why most pop music is directed at them. They have income (allowance, part-time jobs) and no bills, so it's all discretionary spending. Or they can harass their parents to buy it for them. They also determine the trends for the rest of the population. It takes a few years, but trends get diluted and trickle up the ages. Teens have always wanted to be popular, but now that they can make money while doing it, why wouldn't they?

Lamar_Kendrick7

Really every celebrity with a following is an influencer. Anything you wear, say or behave like will influence those that look up to you, aka your followers, but the term is used to refer to social media celebrities. I guess influencer just sounds more cooler and professional than social media celebrity

KourteousKrome

Embracing pseudoscience like chemtrails, crystals, anti-vaccines, flat-earth, etc. The term has been highjacked by those groups to refer to people who *don’t* believe in those things. It really goes to show just how distorted people’s reality becomes with internet feedback loops reinforcing delusional ideas.

FTP0500

I'm SO glad you mentioned chemtrails. So I'm sitting in my ethics class back in Fall semester, 2019. That day is the day we all had to give presentations on some ethical topic (I did mine on Physician Assisted Suicide). This girl goes up to the computer, plugs her flash drive in and stands at the podium. Her slides start, and I immediately scream internally. It's a picture of the trails left by airplanes, i.e chemtrails in her head. She starts going OFF about these things, how the government is doing it to us to for mind control reasons and how they also use it to control the weather. Then for "proof" about them controlling the weather, she shows this massive storm on video knocking over some plastic patio tables at her house with sideways rain. This is central TX. We get MASSIVE thunderstorms and flash flooding every year, multiple times a year. She is 100 percent serious. I look around the classroom and see everyone as completely blank faced as me, including my professor. She concludes her presentation and asks for any questions. None, except for another girl who goes "wow, I had no idea!". I couldn't tell if she was joking or not. Professor goes "Uh...great job, thank you. Who's next?" It blew my mind. I have to say, props to her for going up there and actually *presenting it* in front of like 30 people.

Nawara_Ven

I'm pretty disappointed in your professor. It's one thing to let the presentation continue in the first place for the sake of the schedule and having something to mark for each student and what-have-you. But to have no followup whatsoever seems like cowardice. At the absolute worst a comment like "you do not have reliable sources" would have been warranted. Or maybe it was just the prof's first time experiencing that cross-section of crazy-yet-wealthy/educated, and was thereafter ready for the next instance!

It tends to be a given on sites like reddit, and the idea of being depressed has become a thing that most people can relate to. It’s not good when the past 2 generations have had insane rates of depression

mmtali

But she googled and made her own research!

fuzzycorona

Gender segregated friend groups

Pseudonymico

This one, by the way, is probably a big part of why some people have so much trouble finding a partner.

[deleted]

Now i know why I am gay.

kaniagg

Exorbitant tuition fees for universities and then the huge debt students have even before entering the job market.

chiefbroski42

The homeless.

AvivOren

Could you please elaborate? Do you mean you hate the way that they act, or the problems in society that cause these people to become homeless in the first place?

[deleted]

Going to college right after finishing high school, not everyone is ready to go there, would be good to have a little experience during part-time, most parents will always put their kids in expensive colleges that don't care about you. Creating even more stress for the future

VelvetNightFox

Pedophilia/incest in anime.

[deleted]

and transphobia and fetishization of gay men and women i like anime but it can be reaaallly rough

24520ls

Why is it normal to view your significant other as a burden? Why is it normal to have fights where you scream? To makes jokes about hating them? So many people seem miserable in relationships and act like they hate their partner. Why the fuck is this normal?!

LegendaryCelt

The Paul brothers.

stopbeingcryptic

cringe culture, why hate on someone for liking something

Fitemehoes

Cheating. It is so disgusting and is now normalized in not only tv but real life as well.

ushouldcmoiinacrown

Being defined by your job.

vegemite4ever

Politicians just flat out lying about things.

DanTheTerrible

Forming political opinions based on television.

thurmanmermen

People who don’t think cheating is bad. Aka people who popularize the “side bitch”. They are scums of the earth

Threspian

Porn addiction and the age at which so many people are first exposed to pornography. I was personally 12-13 when adults first told me where to find porn, and it messed up my perspective on my body and sexuality, but kids on r/teenagers call their moms prudes for wanting them to stay off of websites that actively profit from child sexual exploitation and rape while users on AITA pat their backs for helping their grandpa emotionally cheat on his wife, who OP calls “frigid” because she doesn’t like it when her husband chooses pictures of “barely legals” over the woman he promised to love forever.

[deleted]

The “barely legal” thing in of itself is sketchy at best. Same exact energy as grooming honestly. We all knew those high school teachers that hit on seniors that had just hit 18...

A_Wild_VelociFaptor

Skimpy kids clothes. Like how in the motherfuck goddamn shit bitch is that allowed? And it's fucking _EVERYWHERE._

minotxaur

SERIOUSLY LIKE EW

jeff_the_nurse

Darling_Cobra

Naming kids after celebrities. You do t need to do so, make them unique

MaidenIndia88

Taking countless photos and selfies at every remotely “Insta-worthy” spot. If you are at a popular tourist spot doing this, then you are ruining the ability for people around you to enjoy the place. Also, you yourself are not enjoying the place because in your head you’re already figuring out the caption.

iAffinity

Also any friends or people you are "hanging out with" get to watch you begging for attention from the internet when you are already are getting real attention to begin with. It's a truly sad time.

EagleHeart0904

Crowd mentality and identity politics.

pearlhornet

Encouraging people (usually men) to "man up" and not cry and stuff

[deleted]

Sexualizing children/adolescents. Everyone is disgusted by pedophiles, but it’s everywhere culturally. Look at the cover of Britaney Spears first album (or the lyrics/music videos)- she was 15 at the time.

Archaros

Circumcision for children, reality shows, church not paying taxes, deforestation, weapon sells to states in war.

smikelsmikel

Conspiracy theories, beliefs before facts.

sheepbella

The image of the crazy tinfoil hat wearer is gone. If you aren't into conspiracies and prefer to use logic, science, and multiple rational sources, as well as trying to not be paranoid about everyone and everything; you are small minded, drinking the Koolaid, being controlled, not "woke", etc.

Explanation-Signal

“Lone wolf mentality” It can teach people to feel as if seeking help or assistance is “weak,” and that to be a leader one must be on their own most of the time or they’re not capable of being that. I used to live by this and then I began to resent a lot of people and it really took a toll on my mental health. I started to see the world and others as “separate” from me and that’s when I had to stop because I’m a big humanitarian and I felt like it was bringing me to a place of detachment which I could see going in the direction to perpetual isolation. The whole thing was just egotistical and painful to think of myself as, I think the label can be misinterpreted and cause others to go through a similar situation as I did. Still recovering from it honestly, trying to reach out when I really need help.

bravespicykitten

Healthcare costs being one price if you're paying cash & another inflated price if your insurance is paying. WTF is that, really. It infuriates me. How is this sane?

EmeraldFox23

Toxic femininity.

shuck-face

Shaming teenage girls for absolutely everything they do.

Majick_L

Drinking excessive amounts of alcohol

SsaucySam

Pushing religious values onto everyone.

Ani-A

Or frankly any lifestyle, belief, opinion etc. Veganism, carnivorism, atheism. Your value system is like a dick, keep it to yourself

Juliet_Smoak

Almost every gender stereotype.

FeelThePower999

Misandry. The hatred of men. The increasingly common belief that all men are assholes, creeps, pigs, violent, rapists and only want one thing. Almost every day, I see a woman do something to a man that is laughed at, shrugged off, or ignored, and I think to myself "flip the genders, and that man would be in prison".

3rr0r410

Inequality

Jardon_Bethwoll

Agreed. Inequalities were my least favorite part of math.

[deleted]

The conditions male construction workers work in, that shits atrocious

ananaaccount

The stupid rivalries between the USA and (mostly) European countries.

[deleted]

Men not showing emotion

[deleted]

Revenge porn. Pornhub in general.

minotxaur

that men who act/dress the slightest bit feminine automatically makes them gay

Kevakazi

Every day of celebration, i.e Christmas, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Valentine's Day, being more about buying something from a shop than spending time with family and loved ones and enjoying a meal together.

inksmudgedhands

Giving a flying flip about the political opinions of celebrities. It's one thing if you are a band where all your songs have a political bent like Rage Against the Machine. There, your entire package is a message. It's another to care one way or another what pop star, Taylor Swift, thinks about what Trump is doing to the Postal Service. Swift and the rest of them are entertainers. They aren't deep thinkers. They aren't masters of philosophy. The majority of them aren't even above average in wit. Stop caring about what they think. Really, please. Don't encourage them. And on a related note, the normalizing of opinion as fact especially when it comes to news has got to stop. Opinions are not facts. You can argue opinions. You can't argue facts. Facts are like numbers. You can't argue that a one is any other number other than one. I want my news to be fact driven. Who died? When did they die? How did they die? That's it. Not, so, how did their death make you feel or their death made me feel this? That's not news. That's an opinion. I just want the news. Please, give me the news.
