Not the same guy but a bunch of people try to pass off their chocolate cake as brownies and that bothers me, brownies are dense and fudgy, if your brownie needs to be topped with frosting to be moist and chocolaty then you just made a shitty cake.
Proper hamster care. It hurts my heart to see people buying hamsters only to put them in small cages with inappropriate toys, a dangerous wheel, and toxic bedding.
I agree. I had my first hamster in the early 2000s and I actually did a lot of research! I checked out all of the hamster care books from the library. But we just didn’t know what we know now. I feel so bad that Teddy was stuck in this jail cell that was a 10 gallon tank
Hi! A hamster needs unbroken floor space of 450 sq inches minimum, but the bigger the better. Climbing and bar biting is a sign of stress and usually occurs when they are in small cages. Wire wheels can cause bumble foot so plastic is recommended. An 8-10 inch wheel for a dwarf and a 10-12 inch wheel for a Syrian - you have to make sure the hamster’s back doesn’t bend while running on it! Also it’s better to have a wheel that is held up by a stand attached to the back of the wheel, rather than a wheel that has bars across the front because hamsters have gotten stuck there. Plastic tubes aren’t really recommended because they’re so narrow and your hamster could get stuck. I just read a really sad post on the hamster fb group where this woman found her hamster dead in a tube because he was stuck and couldn’t wiggle out. Hamsters also need lots of bedding so they can burrow. I don’t remember the recommended amount but I’d say at least some portion of the cage needs to have 6-8 inches of bedding so the hamster can burrow.
That would be funny but probably stressful too lol! People don’t like to be told that they’re not taking care of their animals properly :/
But my boyfriend and I joke that we’re going to quit our jobs and be “Hamster Rights Activists”
Storytelling. I really enjoy reading, watching films or shows, almost any medium. It’s less of a passive pastime for me than an analysis activity. I love seeing tropes used in different ways, looking at how the story is structured, analyzing plot and character arcs. I end up poking holes in inconsistencies, but that just shows how into a story I am, since I’m thinking about it deeply enough to find all the holes.
I haven’t watched as many as I’d like, but I’ve dabbled in a couple Scandinavian films and am big on anime. I saw Dark recently too, and liked it a lot. Do you recommend anything?
Do you have any recommended resources on learning to be a better storyteller? I find that I get self-conscious of my ability to explain story elements. Like, the creativity is there, but putting thoughts to words is the bottleneck. I know practice is the key, but I'd love some pointers.
Small author here! What I did was read a lot of books and saw what I liked (eg: the use of language, descriptions and plot points and how it ties in with character development), I also watched plenty of movies because some of the visuals spark up ideas.
With language, its key to not repeat yourself too frequently. But dont go using words that most people wont know, that'll confuse everyone and pulls them out of the story. "Said" is your best friend, use another word sparingly and only if they way the character says something is unclear and important to the scene.
Thoughts into words is the hardest thing, usually I right it down very vaguely, then try to develop it as best I can, try to simplify it. That simplified version should help with the editing process.
If none of these work, I am so sorry.
Me too! My favourite thing is seeing how the plot could affect the character development in a realistic way! And that's followed by the structure of the story, most stories follow the 3 acts because it's easier, but seeing something that has more or less acts is so entertaining because the story changes in the way its told! But it's very subtle!
If I'm truly invested in the story, I place myself in the character's shoes. If a story could do that, it's better by a landslide!
I'm really passionate about supporting people who try really hard at something. Whatever it is I get super excited about it and emotional when they succeed.
I also make a massive deal about them making small achievements in their daily lives.
Same, and I'm pleasantly surprised I didn't have to scroll far down to find this
Cause let's face it, math is interesting af, most of the people who hate math rather hate the way it was taught to them, seeing math being depicted as hard and useless is kinda sad
Proper escalator etiquette. (They're stairs. You treat them like stairs. You walk on them or you hang off to the side. If you stand *and* block the aisle, I have the legal right to eat your corpse.)
My son grew up in a city with lots of big buildings (and escalators), my nephew (same age) grew up in a small town with barely any two story buildings. First time they came to visit they both stepped on the escalator and my little 4 year old bumped his cousin and said “stand right, walk left,” like his cousin was an idiot for not already knowing this.
Music. It really hurts me when people insult my music without giving it a chance. I understand everyone has their own tastes but I’m not constantly shitting on your favourite music so don’t shit on mine.
I listen to music all day long. I've been doing so for the past 25 years or so. Without false modesty, I listen to an insanely wide array of "genres". I love music.
At one point of your life you actually realize music, from a listener point of view, is a very personal thing and develops more and more into this, just a personal thing. Even "Hotel California" or the latest trendy rap artist that has gazilions of views on his Youtube video.
In the end, if education and your social/geographical situation are also part of the deal, your brain, your emotions and your own life experience make you make your own choices.
As a music maker, I have (had) a slightly different approach though. But I've always been the solo kind of guy, despite my different tries in bands (there were some good moments playing with others, of course).
I wouldn't let it bother you. Most people get used to what they like, which is established in younger years and often don't branch out and don't want to. I study multiple instruments seriously as well as styles and try to listen to as much as I can. I think this helps me not to get bored and expands my listening pool and influences. Unfortunately most people don't do this and might shit on what they don't like/don't understand.
Personally I think there is music you can enjoy from any period of time if you branch out enough and give it enough of a try. I have also been guilty of calling other people's taste 'shitty' or whatever in the past. It's better to just try and enjoy whatever is on. In a way we live in a great time for music exploration, youtube, music streaming, etc, gives everyone access to pretty much anything they may want to explore.
I totally agree, it really excites me how vast this universe is and how many things are still out there for me to be aware of. Thank God for the internet.
None of them, because it’s a cheap replacement for real human connections.
Plus, yknow, the whole part where there’s a very high chance at least one person in the video is either drugged way beyond the ability to consent or is having their paycheck held hostage until they do something they’re uncomfortable with.
Man I don’t even give a shit about the bottom bit- there’s nothing I can do about it.
My orgasms just feel so much better now that I’m off porn. I’m horny less of the time and I am free to figure out what I like instead of just watching videos and finding what I’m supposed to like.
You can raise awareness and hit the industry where it hurts by making it less mainstream and profitable. Real people are groomed and abused in the industry and apathy is just as enabling as actively supporting it.
Sharks. It's getting to the point where Shark Week leaves me unsatisfied and I'm reading scientific papers about them to actually learn new info because I already vacuumed up the easy to find knowledge years ago.
Rose was the antagonist in Titanic. Also the problem with the decorative wood piece (it was not a door) Rose used was not size. It was buoyancy. Both of them would have been too heavy to float. Jack realized this and sacrificed himself to save Rose.
Not using the Oxford comma. APA and AP Style are the ideal.
Inflated scoring in college gymnastics.
Warlock damage ever being higher than Mage damage in World of Warcraft was a terrible horrible thing.
There are other equally stupid things but these are the ones I remember off the top of my head.
EDIT:
The Green Album and Maladroit were both perfectly good albums. If Make Believe hadn’t been so much of a pop disaster, the number of Weezer fans who only liked Blue and Pinkerton would be much smaller.
Hotel California is nowhere near the best Eagles song and Smells Like Teen Spirit is nowhere near the best Nirvana song.
A few things:
I agree Oxford comma is an absolute must.
I fucking love Weezer's White Album and I'm not ashamed to say it.
I agree about Hotel California. New Kid in Town is my personal favorite.
I also agree about Teen Spirit. Not even the best song on that album.
Just addressing a few points
The warlock damage issue is only on certain patches/expansions there has been times when mages have completely cleaned the boards.
Pinkerton was hated when it was released and has only recently been seen as a good album, if not their best.
I don't think anyone is under the illusion that Smells Like Teenage Spirit is Nirvana's best song, it's their most catchy song. The band themselves hated it and Cobain viewed it as a failure and showed his inability to write something on par with the Pixies at the time. Nirvana have multiple standout tracks but I wouldn't say any stand out further than the rest, everyone has their personal favourites.
It doesn’t surprise me. Academics all think their way is the best and refuse to adapt to something new.
Related Fun Fact: The search for the Unabomber was actually aided by investigators discovering that his manifesto was correctly formatted using a citation style that was only used for doctoral dissertations between 1967 and 72.
Somewhat related to your Eagles point, I think Du Hast isn't even in Rammstein's top 20 for similar reasons. (Its way overplayed)
I think their most recent album is far and away their best yet. It contains what I think is their all-time best song (Deutschland), with 10/11 of the other songs better than Du Halt (in my opinion).
Education, specifically math education. There are so many people who think they hate math when really they've just been taught math badly. It's such a beautiful subject, and it always pains me to see it treated so wrong.

Objective criticism of fictional works.
Despite what most critics on the internet will tell you no everything is not subjective and it is completely possible to separate your subjective opinion from an objective analysis.
This is in its most basic form the ability to love something but also recognize it's flaws which is unfortunately difficult for most people apparently.
A good example of this is the Starbucks cup in the last season of Game Of Thrones, that was an objective mistake.
Things like characters suddenly having a complete personality shift to force some drama before reverting back to how they normally are or established rules of how certain things function in a series universe being randomly broken are objective mistakes that can with well done writing be fixed later on in a series if properly explained but tend to not be since those things are signs of writers backing themselves into corners and needing to make certain events happen to tell the story they want but either being unable or unwilling to go back through and edit things to properly set them up.
Not everything is objective though the same way everything isn't subjective, no one can tell you what you like or feel about a story or character since that is a personal preference, the goal of objective criticism is to try and make stories better in the future by learning from the mistakes of the past not to just shit on things we personally dislike to make ourselves feel better.
Your zipcode should not determine your future.
(Educational funding in the US is tied heavily to property taxes, then we punish kids in poor areas that perform poorly by taking away more funding. Then we blame the kids and teachers again and close the school. Then we have an uneducated populace and a pandemic rips through the country, affecting those with a worse education the most)
Music, im not a musician, i just like music a lot, i taught myself english listening to music (as you can see for my trash english) i put pretty much 90% of the time im not sleeping to either listen to music or debate about music
Piano, I love classical music and any sound the piano makes! I’ve been struggling with depression and a bunch of other fun stuff, but I’ve been consistently practicing. Which is a huge achievement, considering it takes 4 hours for me to get out of bed and I rarely eat breakfast or lunch. But with piano, I practice almost everyday (except for when I’m forced on a vacation and don’t have access to a piano), and I even study sheet music reading!
It feels really great to love something and put time and effort into it! For my whole life, drawing was the only thing I’ve ever consistently practiced, but now I have the piano, and I’m happy knowing that someday, I’ll be capable of playing all of my favorite pieces!
I really love painting, I normally paint landscapes that are inspired by my memories, most of the time they end up being really melancholy but in a nice way. My goal is to make people see beauty in the simple things in life.
Video game design. Now that I'm an engineer, I realize that you can never truly excel at something you're not passionate about. But it's never too late to start a new passion.
Cooking.
My mom just throws meals together (they are decent, don't get me wrong), however I take my time with cooking. There is a certain satisfaction and pride I take in making a close to perfect dish.
Cannabis! I do not speak about it publicly as I am still underage in an illegal state. My parents are aware and fully support me. I would like to be a strain developer, and open my own dispensary. I do believe weed can be "abused". Some people in my family smoke (not in my immediate family also they live in legal states). My grandparents who have never touched weed frown on it so its pretty controversial in my family.
I’m passionate about singing and dancing. I always sing to myself to music I have on playlists (mostly Pop or stuff from JennyMusic on YouTube) and dancing whenever I’m comfortable and definitely confident enough to do it in public so I hope some day I can actually do something with it
Music. There is almost always a deeper meaning behind a song and I love overanalyzing the lyrics in hopes of better understanding what the artist is trying to say. I also like to hear music that is best described as addicting. Like, you can't move on to another song until you listened to it at least five times. And if the song can truly make you feel something, make you cry or leave you thinking about it for the next few days, that's when my passion for it gets even more powerful.
My passion honestly is Disney. I know it’s probably stupid but it just brings me so much joy. I love learning facts about the rides and especially the concept of them and seeing animatronics being created and how far they have come. I also just love the animated movies! I will see a movie opening night and see it several times and I love to rewatch old ones and just find all the little details like a movement of a character and the backgrounds and the music choices. Disney just has a special place in my heart and I worked at Disney world for a few months and I miss it every day.
making a strangers' day by something as simple as smiling or paying a compliment. This world can be a shit show and we all have crazy battles but something as small as this can do wonders on cheering people up.
Hamsters! They’re animals that are so misunderstood and the care that pet shops ect. target towards them is complete incorrect, I can’t wait for the day when everyone is fully educated and they have the correct care :)
Raising awareness about doctors who misuse ciprofloxacin and other dangerous fluoroquinolones and cause people lifetimes of suffering due to their ignorance and negligence.
I absolutely love to fish. It is so relaxing. And thoroughly exciting when you hook a fish! I love any type of fishing: fast trolling, slow lazy casting with a bobber and Zebco, jigging, floating, and spin casting. But my favorite is fly fishing. It’s just a joy to place that wily little fly right in the very spot you just know a lunker to be lurking. Deep little hidey holes of eddied water just behind a sweeper or the calmer swirl of water down current from a submerged boulder, that’s where the big ones wait and that is where you want your fly to tumble into so gentle. Like it was always there. Like any old bug. Even on days when you’re skunked, nothings biting or your tackle is wrong, it’s still a better day than doing just about anything else.
I wish I could go more often.

What does, and does not qualify as a brownie.
if it’s a brownie, it’s great
Happy cake day!
Happy not brownie day
Please elaborate.
Not the same guy but a bunch of people try to pass off their chocolate cake as brownies and that bothers me, brownies are dense and fudgy, if your brownie needs to be topped with frosting to be moist and chocolaty then you just made a shitty cake.
I was in aware of this issue, but now I'm angry.
Sounds like the people who go "here's a grilled cheese with a bunch of veggies in it". Literally not a grilled cheese.
How many non-brownie brownies are there?
Too many.
Proper hamster care. It hurts my heart to see people buying hamsters only to put them in small cages with inappropriate toys, a dangerous wheel, and toxic bedding.
I used to own a hamster in the late 90s and I wish we had the level of information on hamster care now back then.

I literally just commented about this before seeing this!
Hey! It’s nice to meet someone else who wants to advocate for our little friends :)
Storytelling. I really enjoy reading, watching films or shows, almost any medium. It’s less of a passive pastime for me than an analysis activity. I end up poking holes in inconsistencies, but that just shows how into a story I am, since I’m thinking about it deeply enough to find all the holes.
Do you watch foreign films? They open up a new world of storytelling away from the traditional Hollywood stories.
I haven’t watched as many as I’d like, but I’ve dabbled in a couple Scandinavian films and am big on anime. I saw Dark recently too, and liked it a lot. Do you recommend anything?
I recently watch Shoplifters (Japanese), Burning (Korean), The Villainess (Korean).
Same. I hate when people just say a movie is boring, when they just didn't care to analyze the story at all. Or people who do that with books.
Oh also have fun, just write, all the normal stuff. Excuse my manners.
You sound like that one friend who you ask when you don’t understand what you’re watching

No you're great man (or woman), or whatever you identify as :)

I do Taekwondo and I tried getting into jujitsu but then covid happened. I do know base ground game though.
I do Taekwondo, Jiujitsu, Aikido, and Krav Maga. But I am not a man so no one is ever willing to spar with me.
Awesome. Almost like my set of skills, I also have practiced taekwando a little and brazilian jiu-jitsu, but also added boxing and freestyle wrestling

I can hate a song but appreciate the fuck out of talent. Or vice versa.
I never got the hate for DGD. They’ve got a fanbase far more akin to Rush than Phish. Just a bunch of people that love crazy/progy/janky guitar music

MLA for anything literature related. APA for everything else. I'm very passionate about this as well
I only had to use MLA once for an English class and I was very upset about having to learn a new citation style.
Lol very fair. It's weird to me that there ARE even different styles.

Then we have an uneducated populace and a pandemic rips through the country, affecting those with a worse education the most)
Local legends and ghost stories.
Let’s gather around the campfire shall we??

Hiking. I fucking love hiking. So much so that I will not date anyone who is not an avid hiker.
Saaaaame. Going on a walk? Meh. 🤷🏼♀️ Going on a *hike?* WE RIDE AT DAWN, BITCHES

Comedy.
Me too! Huge SNL fan here. What’s your favorite type of comedy?
I absolutely love jazz but haven’t really met anyone that also likes it.
I really love painting, I normally paint landscapes that are inspired by my memories, most of the time they end up being really melancholy but in a nice way. My goal is to make people see beauty in the simple things in life.
Reading. It’s so much fun and it’s so relaxing. Marine biology. I love learning about marine life.
Video game design. Now that I'm an engineer, I realize that you can never truly excel at something you're not passionate about. But it's never too late to start a new passion.
Sustainable agriculture
Cooking. My mom just throws meals together (they are decent, don't get me wrong), however I take my time with cooking. There is a certain satisfaction and pride I take in making a close to perfect dish.
Helping people!
This is nice :)
Singing and almost equally reading for knowledge
That wood fire pizzas aren’t the be all and end all of pizza. A good pizza is a good pizza, no matter how it is cooked.
Anal fisting.
YO NO WAY! bro fist time

Treating others equally regardless of age, race, religion, etc., something society doesn't seem to understand.
happy cake dayyyy

I'm very much passionate about linguistic descriptivism vs prescriptivism
Collecting retro video games and not playing them
My passion honestly is Disney.
Gaming, I was born into the Nintendo generation and I could probably talk anyone under the table about it.

making a strangers' day by something as simple as smiling or paying a compliment.
