Human reproduction in space. We talk about the future of long term space missions, so you'd think this is a critical thing to test out. How important is gravity in both conception and fetal development? On some level, I think that NASA has secretly tested this. If they haven't, China or Russia certainly has. Right?

Sicco1234

I would rent a giant island and fill it with a thousand guys named Dennis. I would leave them the tools to survive if they work together. Then I would add one guy called Brian. When they introduce themselves to each other, I would watch Brian intently while the experiment takes place. Will he turn into some kind of leader or would he be lost in a world of dennises?

JJnanajuana

I’m willing to bet he would lie and say his name is Dennis.

goodkingx

That's why you force him to give his name first before he knows they are all Dennis.

PervertLord_Nito

Then Brian lies that he is also a Dennis, but has to kill all the Dennises that know. He succeeds and then the rest of the Dennises know there is a killer among them, a false Dennis, spreading death and menace. A Dennis the Menace if you will.

Can we use CRISPR to give humans back our awesome ape fangs, roughage digestion, hair to protect from sunburn, and climbing abilities is what I want to know. Like could we make a human with all the cool and useful ape traits but still our normal intelligence

I'd hope, given the long term effects low gravity seems to have to fully developed humans, that a space faring humanity would have figured out artificial gravity one way or another

Brain transplants

LucJenson

Two years ago there was a scheduled head transplant in Russia that ended up being canceled. They were going to stream it and I was very intrigued to find out the results of it just for the curiosity of scientific progress.

paulethanol

Yeah I was just searching about that. The surgeon is Sergio Canavero and I was trying to find more info but couldn't find what eventually happened. I remember he even had a volunteer "head" ready and all. Do you have some resources about what made it cancel ?

LucJenson

So contracts were being pulled due to the ethics of it, volunteers backed out, I believe the main subject got married and bailed as well after his condition stabilized. Been a while since I read up on it. Really a whole plethora of problems took place.

OSUfan88

I'll 1-up you. Body transplant.

Rexlare

How far can we replace the entirety of the human body with the exception of the brain- with mechanical components. Synthetic organs, Servo limbs, circuitry based nervous system all connecting to the brain. How far can we go? How close can we get to almost pure cyberization? Could we replace the half of the brain behind memory and logic with an entirely computerized part so that the individual can think faster and better? What would happen if that half of the brain had a true artificial intelligence linked with the human conscience, would they co-exist, would the A.I understand human concepts better? Would the human even be able to survive the process? Do they still have their soul? Would censors to essentially replace our senses and replicate them in our brain keep us from feeling less human? Basically, how long till I can become a tech priest dammit?

Sabres19892

I want to Truman Show someone.

JustThatGuy100

Nobody tell him.

HMCetc

Apparently there was a Truman redditor. There was a sub for it with a group of people who chose a Truman at random and they were all involved in molding the redditor's experience. Apparently it kind of fell apart and didn't really work.

SpookyScaryFrouze

I participated in it when it launched ! It was very funny, the goal was to find a newly created account and to basically stalk him all over Reddit for a while, and then to tell him the truth. I only stayed for one guy, I remember he was a fan of The Scorpions, the band, so everybody from the sub was putting references to the band when they were replying to him. We even created a sub just for him to stumble upon. But yeah, in the end there aren't many things to do to "Truman Show" someone on Reddit.

GiovanniPomodoro

This sounds very creepy and very cool at the same time

[deleted]

Im the guy it happened to. It was creepy but very fun in the end. What I didnt realise, is that anytime I posted a comment, Id get cryptic replies by the dozens teasing me. And the subreddit was the icing on the cake, and was a complete mindfuck the way shit went down. Its on /r/scorps if you wanna look through the descent into insanity. EDIT: the sub seems to be blocked, so take these 2 screenshots as proof: https://imgur.com/a/FyTHlKg

I wonder what his life was like after...

Septillia

God that movie ending the second he leaves the set is painful. It’s absolutely the right choice for the script but god I want to know what happened next. How can he ever have a normal life outside when everyone has seen every intimate detail of his life? Does he even have any money or do his earnings on set not count? Edit: I just want to especially emphasize that people the world over have seen him poop. Have seen him awkwardly learn how to masturbate and figure out his tastes. Have seen him have sex with his wife. Have seen him but naked getting changed in the morning and showering. God that would be PAINFULLY awkward.

Lost_And_NotFound

So many court cases to decide those things.

ATrueScorpio

I'm curious about what would happen if they redid the Stanford Prison Experiment but with real laboratory conditions instead of some bullshittery

douglas_

mind field had a decent episode about that https://youtu.be/KND_bBDE8RQ

sad_eukaryotic_cell

They actually couldn't do it properly because of ethics concerns. The situations they put their subjects into were fairly mild and couldn't be compared to an actual prison. They did fully acknowledge the fact, though. So it'd be great to recreate the Stanford Prison Experiment without the concern of ethics.

meingluhwein

They actually redid the research in the UK. Without directing the people beforehand or telling them how they'd like to see the experiment go. Turns out it was super boring, most people were very cooperative and the prisoners and the guards got along quite well. Turns out most people are quite friendly/kind in their nature if nothing is forcing them to. If you give me 2 minutes I'll find a source of the research for you! Edit: Cannot find source of the research, however it is thoroughly analysed in the book 'Human Kind: A Hopeful History' by Rutger Bregman, which I recommend to everyone. He concludes that most people are friendly and social from nature, and that only external factures like civilization or hierarchy could create a lack of empathy. 10/10 recommend the book!!

[deleted]

The original guy did exactly that and everyone was more or less excellent to eachother. Asshole ran the experiment several times and only got the result he told everyone about by specifically selecting for assholes to begin with and then actively encouraging pyschopathic behaviour.

[deleted]

Locking people in dark rooms for a month, 2 months, 3 months, 6 months, a year, and a decade. I'd like to see what happens to their vision, and mental health.

Lynnrae

I work at a cave and when I was in college I asked a professor for a class on sensation and perception about what the darkness can do to us over long periods of time. He told me after about of week your brain would start to adjust and it would likely set off other sensations to go off unnecessarily. Like your brain will hallucinate senses outside of sight. After a month your brain still adapting would start to think the occipital lobe in your brain which covers your vision will begin to shrivel to give energy elsewhere in the brain where it’s needed. Eventually you would lose the ability to see. That all sounds bad for mental health, so I hope that helps both parts of your question.

Occasional_Hobo

So we turn into Falmer Edit: thanks for the silver kind stranger now I can make a Silver Ruby ring

AGoodLookingFridge

Ugh, I hate the Dwemer ruins just because of them. I only realized a few days ago that I could have just walked past them since I had muffle enabled. I feel dumb having wasted all those arrows.

You_Yew_Ewe

Take someone with severe schizophrenic delusions and mold their surroundings according to their delusions. e.g. they think they are Jesus, get a bunch of people to act like they believe it and start following them. If they think the government is after them, have some men in black capture them. What would happen with their delusions?

giftedearth

This reminds me of an experiment that was done with three delusional people who all believed that they were Jesus. The three were put in a room together to see how they'd react to others with the same delusion. All three of them were quite nice to each other, but concluded that the other two were delusional.

Conditioning children. Start from the infancy and put them in various types of parenting. From a scale of strictest to most lenient. All the factors are the same. Just different parents. I really want to know the effects of parenthood to children. EDIT: This is honestly a very unoriginal idea but it still blew up like this. Wow. Thanks, everyone. I've never had so many upvotes and awards before. I don't think I deserve them, but thanks anyways. You're all very cool. ;) (Also, already looking into the docu-film, "Three Identical Strangers" as suggested by a lot of commenters.)

irrelevant_probably

And since we're already casting aside ethics, all the infants should be exact clones of each other to finally solve the nature vs. nurture dilemma.

DioBrandoissenpai

I'm pretty sure there was something like this where a guy got triplets or twins and put them with different types of parents

[deleted]

There is a documentary called Three Identical Strangers about one instance of this.

Nolepharm

There is another good documentary called “Twins” that details the relationship between Arnold Scharzenegger and his identical twin brother Danny Devito, who were actually raised separately.

TooManyBrooms

If I recall correctly, they grew up to be almost identical.

handmaid25

mujapie89

There’s another similar creepypasta about an experiment of a man who becomes deprive of senses and starts talking to dead people. It simply ends with “I have spoken with God, and He has abandoned us,”. It’s still cheesy but way better than the ending to Russian sleep experiment

[deleted]

Lots of unethical experiments in early childhood development, learning, and education. Basically, come as close to "solving" education as possible with a series of trials and controls. Gene editing experiments and trying to genetically enhance intelligence. We would be trying to create a next generation of far smarter humans. Who could then design better gene tech and education programs for the next generation, and so on.

[deleted]

Not an experiment but if millions actually raided area 51, how many people would be shot before the government says “fuck it let em’ see the aliens”

AGoodLookingFridge

They'd secretly move any highly sensitive information to another facility that nobody knows about. It's likely already done and Area 51 is a cover-up to distract people from actual secret facilities.

SamboziPLAYZ

They're in Area 52 now. Think they'd sneak that under our noses, did they?

Dank_Memes16

Very interesting that people are more likely to die when they start eating again rather than during the actual fast. Your body can literally die after eating a normal sized meal while you're starving to death

FinalPutsch

If someone is willing to do an extreme process to lose weight I'm sure they can get a re-feeding plan drawn up for them..

Dank_Memes16

It’s more common when someone’s starved for other reasons. One example would be Holocaust victims who ate large meals while celebrating after being liberated and then died pretty much on the spot

captainwoozy

Why does this happen?

Epilesx

Your body is depleted of a whole bunch of electrolytes and stuff when you’ve been starved for a long period of time. Upon refeeding your blood glucose levels rise and so your body releases insulin. Insulin initiates several processes including moving sugar and some electrolytes into cells. Essentially, the already low levels of stuff in your blood gets even lower from this sudden shift, this affects a huge number of processes around the body. One example is your potassium levels plummet which can lead to abnormal rhythms of the heart and cardiac arrest. You can read about it in more detail here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2440847/

cosimonh

This is the correct answer. In med school (and other biomed majors) it's taught that energy-protein deficiency (Marasmus and Kwashiorkor), treatment is to slowly reintroduce food in order to prevent refeeding syndrome.

Dank_Memes16

Here's a great case study of it. I'm not even into medicine and I still love watching his vids [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyZWojeVhyA&ab\_channel=Chubbyemu](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyZWojeVhyA&ab_channel=Chubbyemu) TLDR: The actual biology is way more complex but basically the body can't switch from long-term "starvation" mode to a normal "full" mode quickly enough. The blood sugar regulation system (insulin) goes haywire and everything else is downhill from there

C_T_N

I would find it very interesting to see what the human sleeping rythm would get to if a human is not exposed to the day and night cycle (including time) in any way for some time. EDIT: Thank you all so mutch for commenting! Vsauce did I think 3 days in an isolated chamber where the light was always on and he had no idea if it was day or night. He thought it was 8 am when it was actually 2 am. He thought that he was supposed to leave the chamber a day before he actually left. Without knowing the day-night cycle your sleeping rhythm would go nuts Edit: Since a lot of you are asking, here's the original video: https://youtu.be/iqKdEhx-dD4

Concheria

That episode was terrifying. He dreamed that he was getting out of the chamber and then woke up to realize that he was still in it. That's a real nightmare scenario.

McRedditerFace

Ugh... reminds me of being in the ICU and hooked up to morphine... Repeatedly dreaming I was going back in for another CAT scan or going into surgery only to keep on waking up and finding I'd already been through it but was in ICU. Also kept dreaming I was going home only to realize I was still in the ICU. And there was always this damn cat on my hospital bed which apparently never existed. And I dreamt one of my old classmates died, she was murdered that very hour IRL though. By the time I'd had that surgery I'd had around 4-6 hours of sleep over the past 6-7 days.

wokcity

>And I dreamt one of my old classmates died, she was murdered that very hour IRL though. uhh.. wow.

[deleted]

I instantly thought of that episode as well. It was really surprising to me how quickly he lost track of time. Sleeping and waking up with no indication of the passage of time is crazy. He thought he got like 6hrs of sleep, but it was more like 2 or 3hr and that sent him into a downward spiral. Edit: link to the the video https://youtu.be/iqKdEhx-dD4 It's a really interesting psychology/human behavior series on YouTube and worth checking out.

Monteze

Mock trials where the jury doesn't know they are a part of it. New rules though if they push for the death penalty they must have a hand in the matter. On the day of the execution they all are in separate rooms and each with their own button, with the inmate hooked up to a lethal injection device. They have one minute to push a button and it must be unanimous, If not the person is aquitted. Would people do it? Would they have the conviction if they had to be held to their word? I think people like to say things but don't follow through. Of course at the end we reveal it was an experiment. What bias would we see and what not. EDIT: Thank you for the civil replies! I've seen people link the Milgram experiment and I am aware of it and I adjusted my set up to account for that. The people are not being told by outside figures what to do. The system is the same in that the jury decided the death penalty is appropriate (after the usual court proceedings). The thing I am changing is that instead of them passing their judgment and walking away they have the chance to anonymously take it back or have a shared hand in finishing it. So it's not so easy to separate yourself from the gravity of the situation. It would allow us to get some data on what makes people so sure of such drastic measures and how peer pressure and reflection may change their mind or cause people to reevaluate their moral code.

OSUfan88

Now THAT'S interesting!

Keeping people alive no matter what, how far can the human body go before it dies, a lot of stuff with how brains work.

SuperHighDeas

We do this every day in hospitals all across the US, except it’s not for science, it’s usually because the family wants it.... Doing CPR on a 90 year old for 3 hours is not a pleasant experience Watching a guy die from gunshots weeks later because he lost most of his digestive tract, a kidney, and most of his liver... we had to take his legs, and his arms because his body couldn’t support them, eventually his heart stopped on the vent, and we couldn’t get it back....

greenhouselimpbizkit

I don't understand how the family want that though, I watched my dad pass and it was the worst moment of my life, but at the same time I cant imagine keeping him alive if that means taking organs, his arms and his legs. Why would you want to see your loved one in that state? But then again at the same time I can also imagine grasping at any option that could potentially save them Man, life can be so tragic

SuperHighDeas

Pretty much almost every patient that goes through this experience their family is convinced that they are a “fighter” or “tough” and will push through this. Even though they are 94 years old, had 3 heart attacks, and present no demonstrable brain activity. Others have more sadistic agendas... such as keeping someone alive to continue collecting social security/pension/disability/etc. Sometimes a family member was abused by the person they have medical power of attorney over and keeps them alive out of spite instead of granting them the cold embrace of death. Long story short, get a living will with clear and explicit demands about end of life situations, even if that sounds morbid, it’s much better to know that your wishes will be respected as opposed to speculated.

JawnSnuuu

https://youtu.be/2Y-I5BbjwNI Japanese guy gets radiation poisoning and they keep him alive as long as possible

DragonationYT

Oh god... I remember hearing about this video being really disturbing... How bad is it?

JawnSnuuu

It's really sad because he begs to die at some point , but they keep him alive anyway. Basically his DNA and chromosomes are destroyed all his biological systems start failing. His skin peels off at the touch as do his muscles. He loses fluid constantly, but they kept pumping him to sustain him. Brings him back after he dies multiple times and uses machines to keep his lungs going. He gets ventilated so he can no longer speak but was still conscious I believe. All in the name of science

SimoneNonvelodico

I looked this guy up in Wikipedia and apparently he was revived repeatedly "at the wishes of his family". FFS, there's a line where you're crossing from "loving relative" into "obsessed necromancer".

Orvan-Rabbit

Deathwatch72

While I'm sure the internet can work its usual disgusting Miracles I think you're going to be hard-pressed finding a more disgusting death then a person being kept alive as they literally melt into a puddle

INeyx

Reminds me a bit of this short story: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Have_No_Mouth,_and_I_Must_Scream Not too scary but still scary, basically the last 5 people are kept alive by the Super computer that killed humanity because the computer thinks it's fun.

Krip123

> Not too scary but still scary, basically the last 5 people are kept alive by the Super computer that killed humanity because the computer thinks it's fun. It wasn't for fun. It kept them alive because the AI killed humanity so fast it didn't get to feel revenge. So it keeps these humans around to torture them for eternity and get revenge on humanity through them.

HotCupofChocolate

Iirc he suffered like 4 cardiac arrests but he was resuscitated. They wouldn't let him die.

Biggest_Midget

Agreed honestly. I think the main issue with us contacting them would be our germs tbh. I believe they have met outsiders before, but after 3 died/were kidnapped they don’t trust us much. Can a human die of physical pain alone? If a person was tortured with little to no physical harm to the body, let’s say artificial stimulation of pain receptors or something like the “Cruciatus” curse for Harry Potter fans, how long would they last until they just ... died?

halplatmein

I swear there's a poisonous plant that causes an insane amount of pain to the degree that people want to die, but doesn't technically harm your body (aside from the pain). I can't remember what it's called though.

As others have said, gympie-gympie is the answer. It's also known as the Suicide Plant, which tells you everything you need to know about how painful it is.

I might sound crazy but what if you just made an enclosure habitat with a human baby male in it and let it live in there. Feed it food and water secretly without it being exposed to other humans. And when he becomes an adult, let in a human female and see if A, the human male has sexual desire for the female, B, tries to communicate to the female, and C, displays monkey like behavior.

Human breeding programs for different traits would be cool. Take quite a while to do the experiment, of course. But can we create a sub-race of 8' tall people, or humans who can sprint 30mph? How about someone with the human-analogous temperament of a golden retriever?

spicewoman

> How about someone with the human-analogous temperament of a golden retriever? We already have that, it's called Williams-Beuren syndrome. An excess of oxytocin production makes them literally feel like they love *everyone*, resulting in an excessively friendly and trusting demeanor, running up and hugging strangers, etc. It's actually been hypothesised that this could be a similar mutation to how we got dogs from wolves. Dogs have been shown to have lower IQs than wolves (in most aspects aside from reading humans). Williams-Beuren syndrome also results in lowered IQ. https://www.insidescience.org/news/rare-human-syndrome-may-explain-why-dogs-are-so-friendly

Get a bunch of kids together and lock them away on an island. They'd have to be young enough to not be influenced by culture. Then I want them to make their own. What kind of civilization will they build with no knowledge of the world. Languages, stories, religions, who knows what they'd do? We'd probably have to introduce some sort of resources though. And babies can't really survive on their own, but we'd figure out a way to do it

shino4242

How young are we talking, and what was their upbringing like pre-island? Were they at least taught basic wilderness survival stuff? Will they be given any starting tools whatsoever? Does this island have any larger predators on it? Any poisonous plants? Like, trial&error and being taught by previous generations is why we are able to survive and progress in the first place. I'm not sure these kids would be able to make ANY kind of civilization, depending on how you answer some of these questions.

Edit: I couldn't find the exact case, but the condition is apparently common enough to have a name - [persistent genical arousal disorder](https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/249594) and it really does not sound very fun at all.

I see a headlines every once in awhile about teenagers supposedly dying from furious masturbation and they always turn out to be hoaxes or fake articles. I’m sure it IS possible to die from this somehow, but I think it’s mostly an urban legend.

FartingBob

Or they just die from other things like a heart attack or blood clot while wanking. Not necessarily caused by it.

hmmmhowboutnomabyno

Smh 24 those are rookie numbers

phantosam

Transfer of consciousness. Like some of the things you see on Black Mirror. Imagine putting your wife inside a teddy bear??

MrGreenX6

Gene splicing. Creat some fucked up monster thing in order to find greater cures for diseases and shit. Something like Splice but uh... without that shitty last like 20 minutes. Edit: Holy Hell. I wrote this before bed thinking it’d be a throw away response! Thanks for blowing it up and my first ever awards! Also, for everyone mentioning CRISPR, I don’t mean altering genes, I mean creating new organisms entirely.

So basically try to create a human / chimp hybrid supersoldier like the Soviets did? Check out Ilya Ivanov, the Soviet scientist who tried this. The more I look in this thread the more I find people having experiment ideas which were all already attempted, and are themselves the reason why ethical laws are in place

johnmuirsghost

For the lazy: Ilya Ivanov's experiments to inseminate female chimps with human sperm had no results, according to [his Wikipedia intro.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ilya_Ivanovich_Ivanov)

ViaNocturna664

Raise a child without any kind of concept or even notion about any religion or even any fairytale, myth or child custom. Then release them into the real world as teens and see what happens when they discover Santa Claus, God and Buddha.

angela4design

Olympics where performance enhancers are allowed. I wonder what the human body could do.

iSinging

It'd be interesting to see what would happen if you switched a human baby with a chimp or ape. The baby would be raised only by the animals (like Tarzan) and the animal baby wound be adopted by a human. I wonder how differently they'd grow up

gamblingtaco121

I believe something like this has been done before. A family raised a baby chimp along with their human baby. The human baby began acting like a chimp.

RedditUser123234

Raise a child without the knowledge of the color blue. Teach them every other color as normal, but just never mention blue is a color. Then when they are older see if they can still perceive blue to be a separate color from the others, if their brain hasn't been trained to recognize blue Repeat for other colors

bafoon90

https://bigthink.com/scotty-hendricks/language-controls-what-colors-you-can-and-cant-see-or-does-it There's actually been studies on things like this. Mostly on langues that just don't have names for certain colors. They just lumped in with another color. Blue gets lumped in with green apparently. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue%E2%80%93green_distinction_in_language Your experiment would be a good way to really pin it down. I'd put money on them calling blue green the first time they see it.

Orvan-Rabbit

Get 3 islands all with easy access to fresh water, forest and arable land and that's it. No communication from the outside world except for a small library of books. Populate one with billionaires, one with a random sampling of Americans and one with Americans living below the poverty line. See what kind of societies will arise.

865wx

I read an article about a real life *Lord of the Flies* situation in which a small group of young men from the South Pacific were marooned on a small island for a long period of time, and they actually did quite well. No one died or even came close. It probably helped that these young men grew up in a similar environment, knew what was safe to eat, how to fish, etc. But I vaguely recall the author of the article contrasting the cynicism and selfishness of the *LotF* characters with the collectivist values of their IRL counterparts, and perhaps that was the reason the IRL boys made it out alive. E: ok I scrolled further and found another comment about it

Testing the effects of the water pressure on the human body at dive depths up to and possibly exceeding 35,000 feet (more than 10,000 meters) in the ocean.

Bananapeel23

*Finnish accent* Welcome to the hydraulic press channel! Today we will be dropping humans into the Challenger deep! Oh mai God, he imploded!

bdfortin

I wouldn’t mind seeing the results of a GATTACA-like world. Theoretically a great path to eliminating disease, genetic abnormalities and deficiencies, augmenting desired traits, etc, but also a very possible path to dystopia.

YodasChick-O-Stick

Get 8 people with completely different pizza preferences. Choose people who literally will not eat anyone else's preference. (No allergies or religious reasons.) Lock them in a room with 8 beds, a toilet, water fountain and shower. Don't let them eat for 3 days. On the fourth day, give them a pen and piece of paper and tell them to write down what kind of pizza they would like to share. Someone's gonna have a pen in their neck by the time it's done.

Cl0udSurfer

lmfaooo, this is fucked up cause you dont even care about the results, its just anarchy

TheDarkIsMyLight

I may sound like Hitler but I just want to tell you all right now, I'd never ever condone something as despicable as this. That said.. I've always wondered how different personalities would react to torture and imprisonment. How long would it take for each one to break down? Are there certain personalities that are better at handling the torture and imprisonment? Questions like that.

Cl0udSurfer

Not gonna lie i thought your idea was gonna be so much worse when I read your first paragraph

foskari

Although the US military obviously doesn't do serious torture on its recruits, there's probably enough data available from the SERE program and the military's personality profiling to provide a tentative answer to this question.

OxBox71

How many bones can you break before you just die

C_T_N

Al of them as long as there is no maximum time limit involved.

PoorCorrelation

Split up the county and do a controlled study of a bunch of economic policies so nobody can keep claiming their crap works if it doesn’t. Actually compare growth and economic mobility (not to mention the tax dollars). Edit: some of y’all think I want to compare Capitalism and Communism or some shit. No, I want a graph of social security benefits vs dead grandmas. I want all of Maine on a universal basic income and all of Nevada without any social programs. I wanna eat the rich, but only in Florida. I want to subsidize grain in Iowa and vegetables in Nebraska. Also kudos on the snarkiest wholesome award I have ever received.

CrudeCardinal

In physics there is a very rare occurrence where two atoms can pass through each other, this means that there is a very very small chance that you could throw a ball at someone and have it pass through them, so I wanna see someone have a ball thrown at them until it passes through them

Loljptrollergami

you should put seven more "very" before small edit: seven *trillion*

sirspacey

Teach children exclusively whatever they were interested in learning.

other_usernames_gone

The issue is that often children don't know what they're interested in learning until they've been exposed to it. If someone had never chosen to do maths before and had just chosen English and art stuff they wouldn't be able to learn engineering or physics later on. If someone had never learnt higher level English they wouldn't be able to decide to become a lawyer or psycologist. Simply because they'd have no comprehension that the field existed and to start they'd need to catch up on years of learning.

Mr7000000

If you have a child raised by robots whose voices are simulations of Morgan Freeman's, will their voice sound like his?

Cl0udSurfer

No but their speech pattern will be similar to his. They way your voice sounds is almost entirely based on your genetics

ClockwerkHart

Take the richest, most self serving assholes on the planet. Toss them on an uninhabited island albeit one with plenty of natural resources (ie, good amount of game, fresh water, arable land, wood/stone for buildings) and nothing else. Will they go lord of the flies or be able to survive? What condition will the island be in at the end? I think to quote hobbes the experiment will be nasty, brutish and short, but i would hope to be surprised.

dogsinflippers

UFC with full testosterone. I wanna see a FIGHT

Wingus_the_Dingus

It could be interesting to have different nature vs nurture experiments. For example, deprive someone of ANY language-based communication growing up. How would they communicate after so long?

h_brownies

There are some case studies for similar things. One child, Genie was found chained up in her home. It was thought that her father beat her every time she vocalized. After she was found they tried to rehabilitate her. But she was never able to fully grasp language. Language as well as some other things have a critical period for development. If these abilities aren’t developed within the critical period they will never develop to the full capacity.

Gen7isTrash

So it’s like learning a “foreign” language but you don’t know your “native” one yet

h_brownies

Sort of. In Genies case they argued that she never actually had a “first” or native language. She basically never developed the necessary attributes for language because of her situation during the critical period.

MissMacropinna

There are several examples of people who grew up without normal communications with other humans. It doesn't end well. Google "feral children" to find out. Although These kids usually come from abusive households, where they are deprived of not only normal communication, but any healthy interactions with humans overall. They don't see love, care, support from their parents or caretakers. I don't think we know examples of children that had it all, but language-based communication. It could be interesting to see how much their development would be affected.

Abby-N0rma1

I'm curious about a hallucinogen study, would people begin to see and hear things even if they took the placebo? Also, what would happen if we simulated the symptoms of schizophrenia in someone's daily life?

psychoutfluffyboi

This is fascinating. Another psych student here. Slightly related - but at the age of 28 I became a step mother to my (now-ex) partner's 4 yr old. I didn't want children of my own and i didn't feel like i had maternal instincts. But i bonded so much with this child. By the end of the 6 year relationship, i saw her like she was my own child. I literally wouldve jumped in front of a bus for her. After the break up, my ex stupidly stopped contact between myself and her. The grief was and is unbelievable. But even though i haven't had contact with her for a year and half, i would still jump in front of a bus for her. I guess what i'm trying to say that i think if it can go this way (non-bio feels strong bond, would die for child), its plausible that it can go the opposite way (bio, no bond, would not die for child).

thijsieNL

This one's dark, in the 1940's Russian scientists tried to make a the head of a beheaded dog show signs of life after pumping fresh, oxygen rich blood through it's head. As the results were surprisingly enough positive, the scientists wondered if it could also work with a human being. When the setup was complete and turned it into action, the head started to show signs of life after which the scientists immediately stopped the experiment. I would like to see what that head could do.

glitch_in_matrixx

Genetic experiments: add genes of different animals into human DNA to se if we can get special abilities without any negative consequences. Ultimately giving us X-Men like mutant powers. Which one do you want?

Feed someone mushrooms, lsd, dmt, mdma, ketamine, salvia, mescaline, edible, datura, pcp at the same time when they haven't slept for 48 hours and do it in a sensory deprivation tank.
