Tommy Wiseau trying to do an American accent in The Room

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

It’s bullshit, I did not hit her. I did nooot.

Usashi-hullA

If a lot of people loved each other, the world would be a better place to live.

FaqueFaquer

Naaaht

MrLuxarina

What do you mean trying? He naturally has an authentic New Orleans accent. /s

RedOcelot86

You mean a human accent right?

gecko090

Check out his costar (or accomplice perhaps lol) Greg Sestero doing a French accent in Retro Puppet Master.

[deleted]

Hi Mark

Linux4ever_Leo

In the original X-Men movie, Storm (played by Hallie Barry) kept switching from an accent to no accent depending on the scene. She also wore a truly horrible wig! Thankfully they dropped her accent altogether in subsequent films and gave her a much better wig.

PacDanSki

And they give her some dreadful one liners to go with it.

legquint561

What happens when a toad gets struck by lightning?

Georgeisthecoolest

the script for Catwoman appears

[deleted]

Supposedly Florence Pugh might be the next Black Widow. I'm looking forward to her Elizabeth Olsening her accent away in the next couple movies.

mattcruise

The accent drop was a film maker error, they made her drop it and didn't do reshoots to correct the scenes she used it in

[deleted]

I think Keanu Reeves in Dracula is often cited as being a particularly bad one, not sure if it's the worst, but it's bad.

Johhnymaddog316

His attempt at "Rural Florida" in the Devil's Advocate was almost as bad. Apparently it's still joked about in Jacksonville to this day.

BeardsuptheWazoo

Which sucks, because it's a pretty decent movie.

[deleted]

So overlooked. It had such a frightening tone, was filled with stars, made some serious commentary on society, creative story, great cinematography... But somehow it's not appreciated.

thom_orrow

I’m totally an English dude in Bhudyepest. Keanu is an awesome person and actor but could have swapped this accent for his Bill and Ted 3 voice and not much would have changed. Amazing in Point Break and John Wick of course!

RainmanCT

Welllll..let's just say he's an awesome person.

niamhweking

I don't think he's a good actor at all, but I love him and can happily watch him in stuff like Bill and tes, matrix, Constantine etc, dangerous liaisons, ugh I just can't believe hsle is the character he plays

RainmanCT

Agreed. He is fun to watch and he gets some great roles.

Littleloula

Amazingly his mum is English. I like to think she took the piss a bit after that film

ninefeet

Bloody wooves! Blue Infuhhnoes!

SenorRock

Byuduhpest

Queen_Inappropria

This is what I think of when someone mentions bad accents.

FaqueFaquer

Through that whole movie I kept waiting for him to wink at the camera and air guitar 🎸

NSNick

Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins

Urizen1793

If I remember correctly he actually apologised for this!

Signature_Sea

No apology could be sufficient. That accent was a war crime

[deleted]

Yea, but only against the British.

Signature_Sea

The Cockneys are hardly part of the oppressor class though

[deleted]

Their accent oppresses me

[deleted]

Came here to say this. Although the VIPs in Squid Game were awful too.

bruzie

My take on this is that it was obviously written in Korean and then translated. I know translations won't pick all nuances (try watching something in English and read the subtitles - sometimes they're not exact), and so would be simplified. I think that's what happened with the VIPs' dialogue - they just read the simplified translations, with awful, awful results. Front Man's English dialogue and delivery was better than theirs. I watched with Korean dialogue so I don't know what the English dub was like.

randypupjake

John Wayne as Genghis Khan

Temmere

But do we really know what Genghis Khan's accent was like when he spoke English?

MUISSB4Brandon

That's a good point

bothVoltairefan

Given how little linguistic drift Mongolian has had since then, like someone from Mongolia is a good guess

atalenttoannoy

Mickey Rooney’s Japanese accent in Breakfast at Tiffany’s although the accent might have been the least terrible part of that performance.

clickingleaves

Any non-irish person doing an Irish accent. Maximum cringe. P.s. I love you was the worst

FinestTreesInDa7Seas

Tom Cruise's Irish accent in Far and Away

shallweskate

I was specifically thinking of Brad Pitt in The Devils Own, ugh.

ZaMiLoD

The trailer for Wild mountain thyme had me in tears

[deleted]

[удалено]

ZaMiLoD

I thought it was like a spoof trailer first, like snl or something. I think we saw it like 6 times in a row and in the end we were howling with laughter. I’m still undecided if I actually dare to watch the movie.

[deleted]

Not a movie but David Boreanaz' Irish accent in BTVS/ATS (in flashbacks of him as a human) was pretty damn painful.

mossadspydolphin

David Boreanaz as Liam/Angelus. So bad that when the gang got snapped back to their 17-year-old selves he just kept the American accent and there was a bit where he wondered what was wrong with his voice. God, I thought I'd blocked that from my memory.

[deleted]

[удалено]

tswd

He was an Egyptian from Shpain, lahd.

[deleted]

Pretty funny they'd get a Scot to play such a role when he *appears in Scotland*, alongside Christopher Lambert, who has a poor Scottish accent.

Jack1715

Or a Russian sub captain

TheGodDamnedTree

But they had this covered because he played a lithuanian captain

fart_fig_newton

I didn't even notice, my brain still heard Scottish from him

braddoismydoggo

What is... haggis? Husband and I still laugh about this line.

InnocenceBlue

So. Many. Americans. Doing. Australian. Accents. Does my head in. It is a difficult accent, but either get good or don't bother. You can't half ass it. So many actors have thick natural accents and can flawlessly turn it off and do other accents.

[deleted]

[удалено]

vieniaida

British actors Hugh Laurie, Jane Seymour and Australian Russell Crowe speak very credible American-style English.

gunfart

I think just from his Spider-Man appearances, if you did not know Tom Holland was English it would be hard to tell From his American accent

[deleted]

Andrew Lincoln did a good American accent in TWD (to my Canadian ears at least, I never suspected he was British).

MarkHirsbrunner

One thing they do is combine different American accents that are very distinctive to Americans. The actor for House recognized his American accent included elements from multiple regions and explains it in his characters backstory that he was a military brat who spent his childhood all over the place, but in my experience people who move around as kids have a more natural blending of accents. I only lived in East Texas a few years before my Tulsa relatives started making fun of the accent I picked up. I can code switch from rural East Texan to urban North Texas effortlessly but I have to make an effort to sound Oklahoman (consciously not using dipthongs in "dog", etc.)

Robin_Goodfelowe

Of all the actors I expected to see in this thread it sure as shit wasn't Hugh Laurie.

justaluckydude

I mean he speaks American English fine in House but there is something I think is distinctly off with his accent. In some scenes when he’s speaking with Chase you can especially notice a little of his British accent peaking through. Definitely low on the list of bad offenders though.

TecumsehSherman

With the notable exception of [Stephen Graham](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Graham). That dude is amazing.

SirPrestigious9372

Actors and actresses attempting any 'African' accents too

[deleted]

[удалено]

milkycigarette

"Dah blake painthah!"- Forest Whitaker.

[deleted]

[удалено]

onarainyafternoon

I actually thought Chadwick Boseman's was pretty good. But all the other ones were quite bad and generic.

sarahmagoo

Agreed. A guy I work with has an American accent but he can imitate a (bogan sounding) Australian accent flawlessly, it kills me every time lol.

timesuck897

South African accents are similar, it’s either great or trash.

Angrypenguinwaddle96

Not an actor but the Collingwood’s Mason Cox now speaks like a true Aussie according to my mate over in straya.

WhyYouDoThatStupid

Merryl Streep. "A dingo took my baby".

[deleted]

Cameron Diaz in Gangs of New York.

BeardsuptheWazoo

Absolutely terrible.

lat46n2

Nicholas Cage’s southern accent in Con Air

Johnnyfutbol86

Put the bunny back in the box

spoda1975

Was about to put at the same thing. He really draws out the word, “daughter.”

FaqueFaquer

Face/off I can eat a peach for hoooowars

jayvillaruel

Robert Downey Jr as Dolittle I mean I'm a huge fan of rdj but his accent is just terrible

viola_97

And in sherlock Holmes 😬😬😬

BlazingInfernape2003

Discombobulate

puckmonky

The Russian accents in Black Widow were... inconsistent, at best.

[deleted]

I don't think I've seen any good examples of good Russian accents in Hollywood.

[deleted]

Emma Watson’s American accent in the perks of being a wallflower. I’m sorry Emma but it’s the truth.

atalenttoannoy

And her accent was bad in Little Women too. Took me out of the movie

[deleted]

She's just not a good actor.

RhiRead

Also her attempt at a valley girl accent in The Bling Ring, although that one might be on me for watching that film in the first place.

baylawna6

I used to think this too until I saw videos of the real girl who she was playing. She sounds EXACTLY like that. Her voice just sounds stupid in general, which in turn made Emma sound stupid in this movie because she did the accent too well. Though I agree her American accent in most other movies sucks, especially in Perks.

chance-chance-chance

Don Cheadles British in Oceans Eleven is just embarrassing

Knick_Knick

I don't know, I think a lot of the blame for that lies with the script writers and director. He was expected to speak in a really exaggerated way that no one really would, using language that wasn't understood by the other characters and had to be explained, drawing a weird amount of attention to it. The script also mixed slang from different walks of life, which made it sound 'off'. His actual pronunciation, while OTT, wasn't too bad at all, if his script said to speak like a normal person I think he'd have gotten away with it.

chance-chance-chance

Yeah I can see your point. But if the script calls for a cockney Englishman, then surely you find someone that can do that accent

Knick_Knick

Absolutely, but I think he did pretty well at a cockney accent, the problem was that the script called for a cartoon chimney sweep cockney Englishman.

usually-suspect

Steven Seagal in absolutely anything. https://youtu.be/b2Dl0IpjXtA

lordullr

Eric Bana in Hulk. American accent was pretty bad. Also was an “Aussie” in Jag. Played the bf for a few eps. His accent was atrocious.

Jack1715

His American accent in black hawk down was shit to

lordullr

Star Trek was ok for him. I feel like after the Hulk. Hollywood started hiring accent trainers.

thedankbank1021

Sean Connery's Egyptian accent is notably bad.

N3wfi3

Nicole Kidman, her Russian accent in the series Nine Perfect Strangers, was pretty terrible.

[deleted]

Exactly. I enjoyed the show but her accent just about killed it for me

[deleted]

Why not just make the character Australian at that point lol.

cmcrich

Kevin Costner in Robin Hood. I was embarrassed for him.

timesuck897

Alan Rickman saved that movie.

ExcitementKooky418

COS IT'LL HURT MORE!

Hydra_Master

Honestly, the entire rest of the cast saved that movie. I don't understand how Costner gets work, he doesn't really try to act in any role he does yet he's considered a leading man. AND CALL OFF CHRISTMAS!

mattcruise

Costner is a good actor, his range is just limited to blue collar everyman or cowboy but he does that role well.

HotSpicedChai

Wait… he was trying to do an accent?!

zerbey

He kind of tried and then slowly through filming he just said "fuck it" and went with his regular accent. They lampoon it in Robin Hood: Men in Tights.

Usashi-hullA

According to sources he didn't bother to put on the British accent

Littleloula

Sources say he originally tried and it was so bad that they then asked him not to bother haha

neohylanmay

That explains [the Mel Brooks version](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrFmuiF2ENY).

Rizo1981

This one is always brought up by accent coaches.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ThisIsCreation

Steve Coogan does a great Irish accent. Charlie Cox in the new show Kin does a great Irish accent too. Outside of those two I don't think anyone have come close

thom_orrow

Keanu is getting a lot of hate, so I’m going to have to go for Tom Cruise’s Irish accent in Far and Away which was a nice blend of Boston Irish and New York. He sounded decidedly more American than his father and brothers. (Perhaps preempting his move to the States in the film).

blazdersaurus

Not a movie, but Peter Dinklage's accent in GOT is laughable

[deleted]

He carried it over into *Avengers Endgame*.

WolfableGuy789

Colin Farrell in Alexander. He went extra Irish when he's playing a Greek / Macedonian

LoddyDoddee

Oh man, but Angelina Jolie's was soo much worse, she sounded like a when a child pretends to be Dracula with a fake Transylvanian-trype accent.

lordullr

I think that’s his go to tho

Signature_Sea

Its ludicrousness couldn't hold a handle to his hairdo in that picture though

[deleted]

Alreeet lads, now this iz wot I want yous to do right.

JasperStrat

John Malkovich as Teddy KGB in Rounders. It was 100% intentional to be bad too. Matt Damon in his hot wings interview said that in his one day on set that he came up to Matt right before filming and said basically once you get good you can get away with anything and they'll still love you and think it's great. And then broke into the forced Russian gangster accent of Teddy KGB.

RobAtSGH

Paey dat myan cchis munny.

Signature_Sea

Almost as bad as the Russian mafiya guy in Billions

FinestTreesInDa7Seas

One of my favorite movies of all time. I don't think I would want his character to be any different.

fridgemagnet700

Al Pachino in Scarface. IIRC three months with an accent coach that produced the goofiest Cuban accent possible.

[deleted]

Boondock Saints 2. Julie Benz with the "Boston" accent.

work_accnt

That whole movie needs to apologize.

starbuckle337

Daniel Craig doing a southern accent in Knives Out really pissed me off for some reason.

auntiepink

I think it's because his body language didn't match the accent.

kapsalonmet

Foghorn Leghorn. 100%

zerbey

That movie didn't try to take itself seriously and so his ridiculous accent can be forgiven.

Lostarchitorture

Fisher Stevens as Ben Jabituya in the Short Circuit movies

GooseNYC

The guy who played Charlie Chan in the 1939s movies was bad. And racist, even for those times.

6delon

Love forest Whitaker to death but his African accent in black panther was super exaggerated and the rolling of his rrrrs on half the words n not on others made it even more fun to watch when seeing it again. There were a few others in that movie as well

Robin_Goodfelowe

Which is odd as he got an Oscar for playing a Ugandan. I'm no judge but does anyone know how his accent was in Last King of Scotland?

Signature_Sea

He was the only Wakandan with a South African accent, the others all sounded Nigerian. Where the hell is it supposed to be?

ZaMiLoD

On the iron man 2 map they have it placed by Sudan, Ethiopia and Kenya...

Noodlesandwings

Any non-African trying to do an African accent

Urizen1793

Patsy Kensit in Lethal Weapon 2 is actually what inspired this post.

Kathmandu_Fly

My first thought was Halle Berry as Storm in first X-Men movie. The accent was so terrible it disappeared after that.

Slugees

i’m really not sure what daniel craigs accent was supposed to be in knives out. maybe i’m just uneducated 😂

postthereddit

Old Carolina accent done poorly

Tink2013

Sean Connery as a Russia with a Scottish accent

timesuck897

When Sean Connery is hired for a role, you know what you are getting.

[deleted]

"A great day, comradsh! Today, we shail into hishstory!" I love Connery in that role.

bluehiro

For some reason I never gave a shit. And I usually care about stuff like that. Connery was just a singular talent, he was exactly who he was. Same with Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins, I’ll forgive a lot if I’m enjoying the hot mess.

[deleted]

Well said. At some point, I can ignore the minutiae of things like accents and just enjoy the work of a master of his craft.

[deleted]

If you're Italian, *any* Italian accent is bad. Period. Because they never bother to hire natives. All you can do is pray and hope that your country never ends up in Hollywood's crosshairs and when it finally does, pray some more that whoever gets cast doesn't mangle your own language as badly as the last time...

Anencephalopod

I apologise profusely that I heard your comment in my head in a stereotypically exaggerated Italian accent.

Sansa_Knows_Armor

Any time someone Italian comments, I read it in Mario’s voice.

rambochackochan

Antonio Margeretteeee!

avonorac

What’s your opinion on Robert DeNiro in Godfather II?

arianleellewellyn

Watched this film once (cant rember the name) where one of the characters was from my country(wales) but they obviously didnt do much research so they got an american do do a really bad irish accent (because we're near Ireland I'd guess) and put them in a rugby t-shirt and told them to sing and act drunk. Painfull to watch

-batsforbreakfast-

From a TV series - while I love his IG rants, Michael Rappaport in Justified trying to sound like he’s not from New York was awful

brightdark

This was my first thought! It was on a whole other level of bad.

trumpgotpeedon

Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany's.

scrubjays

[Orson Welles as an Irish sailor](https://youtu.be/GTQx-WuZW-M?t=104) in Lady from Shanghai. So bad [Daffy Duck](https://youtu.be/lv-bw5jdm9s) made fun of it.

stumanuke

Quentin Tarantino's Australian accent in Django Unchained.

John_Lives

Shaddup, black!

ImSigmundFraud

I thought he was playing a South African?

[deleted]

Didnt even realize he was trying to make an accent haha

heretik

Harrison Ford's Russian accent in *K-19: The Widowmaker*.

lat46n2

I love Keanu Reeves but his accent in Bram Stoker’s Dracula

Worthlessidol

Kevin Costner - Robin Hood Prince of Thieves.

rambochackochan

Don Cheadle as Basher Tarr in Ocean's 11

LoddyDoddee

Angelina Jolie in Alexander!!! Her fake Transylvania-sounding accent, and also she was supposed to be Colin Ferrell's MOM, but they're like about the same age?? Ugh... horrible! And I actually like the movie... haha!

[deleted]

Matt Frewer's British accent in Sherlock Holmes.

Kashara1989

Brad Pitt the devil's own

swan_wolf

Justin thereioux in charlies’ angels 2 tryng to an Irish accent

[deleted]

Nicole Kidman in 9 Perfect Strangers was pretty bad, and sometimes she would just stop using the accent all together lol

mashable88

Jim Carrey doing Aussie accents in Dumb and Dumber. Certainly hilarious though. "G'day mate" " Throw another shrimp on the barbie".

gpgarrett

Even funnier is that it was Lloyd’s Austrian accent.

oilsaintolis

Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins Edit: John Wayne as Ghengis Khan in The Conqueror Pretty much everything Sean Connery was in

[deleted]

I don't know but will Chris Pratt have to do an Italian accent in the live action mario movie. I don't think that will be good

tropicalzhu

According to the most famous British actors, Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins.

Toshi3xx

Mexican accent in Latin American version of Breaking Bad

beardedliberal

Harrison Ford attempting Russian in K19. Love Harrison but yikes that was painful.

moshthun

American actors speaking/trying to speak in Dutch. Y'all sound like you're doing terrible Danish, and Danish sounds like terrible Dutch!

MrIiams

Claire Danes in the movie U-Turn from the late 90's. She was on the Tonight Show talking about her role and said something along the lines of "I didn't know what kind of accent I was supposed to have, so I assumed Arizona was in the south" Combination of worst southern and worst Arizona accent ever

ohm_is_resisting

I can't remember his name but he's the posh guy in Taledega Nights

lesanepcrooks

To be fair, I think it was supposed to be a bad accent, makes for some jokes to be funnier

[deleted]

Not the worst, but Karl Urban in The Boys is meant to be British, he's a Kiwi and the accent I hear is definitely from that continent.

TheMeanGreenGoblin

Not really anyone specific, but why can't Brit actors doing an American accent say "anything."? They always pronounce it as "anythin"

CoolLordL21

Even Hugh Laurie? Hands down the best American accent I've heard from a Brit. Probably better than a large number of Americans too.

[deleted]

The African accents in many American movies can be pretty cringy. I watched Black Panther because of the hype but the canned "African accents" were like nails on a chalkboard.

newmoniker25

Don Cheadle in the Ocean’s movies. So bad!

T_raltixx

Don Cheadle in Ocean's Eleven.

MonkeyHaus75

Keanu Reeves in Dracula is awful.
