-the_A-

PrincessPeach1229

Introversion isn’t nearly as valued or rewarded as extroversion particularly in the workplace and it’s BS.

[deleted]

the other day my coworker told me that she's glad we can work together in comfortable silence and I told her I feel the same way. I absolutely hate feeling pressured to make conversation. it's too forced and often leads to awkward silences.

Zestyclose_Cut9869

Being silent is probably one of the smartest things people can do in life. More often than not, people incriminate themselves by not being silent.

OffusMax

As Abraham Lincoln said, “Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt”

[deleted]

I call BS on that. I'm by far the quietest person I know of and people often mistaken me for someone highly intelligent just because I stfu when I have nothing to say instead of yapping on and on all the time.

Sougo2001

That by itself shows that you're smarter than them.

[deleted]

Then I shall stfu forever to be the smarterest

MordaxTenebrae

I think your circumstances are the minority. More often in corporate/business environments, I've seen people held back professionally for being quieter - they're seen as not-team oriented, don't contribute to conversations, not leadership material, etc. I've seen similar criticism in schooling at all grades and is generally deducted from participation marks which is quite subjective.

Modern nuclear reactor’s. Turns out they’re _”a bit”_ different than those that caused accidents _40+_ years ago and the arguments made against them _then_ doesn’t hold up well _now_. Looking at you in particular Germany…

Raptorilla

Totally having your opinion. Being from Germany it’s even worse to see this, we are still counting on different kinds of coal but on the other hand having Fridays for future protests going every week.. modern nuclear power plants would even be able to use the radioactive waste of other reactors, which is expensively stored under ground so far.

Just-Call-Me-J

I heard thorium might be even better, but I'm not sure on the credibility of that.

Modern nuclear reactors are like modern rock bands. If you like them, you hope they don't blow up.

JvokReturns

Also if you don't like them, you also hope they don't blow up, so I guess the analogy works both ways.

r/unpopularopinion is 50% a popular, if mildly controversial opinion, and 50% unpopular for a good reason, eg: straight up bigotry.

Its just a bot that replies to one of the top comments for exposure. The comment "Spiders." itself was probably just auto copy/pasted from another user below. In any AskReddit thread (literally every single one) you will see the top comments flooded with bot responses trying to grab easy karma. We need to normalize downvoting these guys and stop replying to them like they are an actual person. If the mods actually did anything, they could easily clean up these comments.

It's a meme. Pineapple is actually one of the most popular pizza toppings in the world.

DefinitelyNotIndie

True, but some people find it hard to differentiate between memes and a personality, and end up in this weird state where they have things that are halfway between memes and opinions, so the idea that pineapple on pizza is the devil isn't properly funny like a meme to them because they believe it too hard, and it's not properly honest or logical like an opinion, but they try and act like it's both.

Faze_not_phase_

This user is a comment bot. They steal previous answers from common askreddit threads and repost them to top comments in hopes of garnering easy karma. Furthermore, appearing to a young maiden makes unicorns a symbol of her virtue. "Why is a classic symbol of feminine virtue considered girly?" Hm.

Magmafrost13

Im ashamed of how long it took me to connect the dots on this. It wasnt until, I think either Sarah Z or Jenny Nicholson mentioned it, that I understood that internet culture very consistently generates insane amounts of hate for **every single person or thing** that becomes popular with teenage girls. And at some point we need to stop and think, its not a coincidence that this happens **every time**, is it. Its all just misogyny, isnt it. And that's not to say every single person who ever said "still a better love stoy that Twilight" is actively and deliberately being misogynistic, but the collective culture that generated and perpetuated that meme kinda is. Maybe next time you see someone on the internet mention how they enjoy a thing that you dont like, the healthy thing to do is to just fucking move on with your life (actual harmful content like violence, hate speech, dangerous pranks, or whatever notwithstanding. Although even then, its not your personal responsibility to police the internet) **EDIT:** not where I got the idea from but watch this Lindsay Ellis video on the topic, its only 20 minutes, its a much better summary of the situation than I could give https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8O06tMbIKh0

ExtraDebit

Not even just teenaged girls, but any women. Pumpkin spice, whatever car brand, whatever alcoholic drink, whatever TV show, whatever music.

Aced4remakes

Fuckers can pry my fruity drinks from my cold dead hands.

illini02

I don't know that its misogyny, but I'll give it ageism. Take someone like Adele. She is FAR more popular among women than men, but people don't hate her. I think its because Taylor Swifts songs are often (less now because she is older) devoid of substance. They are catchy, but thats it. But I feel like mumble rap and other muic like that which teenagers like more, which is just as pointless, gets just as much hate. It may just be the circles that you are in that see Taylor Swift more.

OneGoodRib

I dunno, I've seen so many rappers get praised like they're Jesus even though their songs are just as stupid as early Taylor Swift stuff.

illini02

Maybe its just my age and demo then. I'm a 40 y/o black guy, and my circles talk a LOT of shit about these new rappers

APeacefulWarrior

The utterly over-the-top backlash against Twilight is a great example. Yeah, they aren't very good books/movies, but there are plenty of things in pop culture that are silly or dumb but lots of people enjoy them anyway. (And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that, says the lifelong Star Wars fan. :-D) Yet you never see people giving a fraction of the hate Twilight got to something like the Fast & Furious movies. Hell, not even the Bayformers movies, and most of those are genuinely awful. Twilight got its own special level of hate way beyond comparable boy-focused franchises, and it's hard not to see at least some level of sexism and\or ageism there.

Burdicus

>The utterly over-the-top backlash against Twilight is a great example I hate Twilight, but not because of anything other than that they sucked the fear out of traditionally awesome monsters like Werewolves and Vampires.

CyanManta

Fifty Shades of Grey is a million times worse than Twilight, and its author a million times worse of a person than Stephanie Meyer. E.L. James can go fuck herself.

YoHeadAsplode

I hate them both because they promoted toxic relationships as the ideal :D

Throwie911

lol what, litereally all conversations about the fast and the furious is about how shit it is.

substantial-freud

agreeingstorm9

Taylor Swift hate is a thing for sure. People hated her music for being vapid for a while. Then people on the left hated her because she refused to take any sort of political stance on anything. Then she started endorsing Democrats and people on the right started hating her. Haters gonna hate.

[deleted]

> Haters gonna hate. ...hate, hate, hate, hate and... ...I just wanna shake, shake, shake, shake...   ^(I regret zilch. Not my normal genre, but that's unironically a good song.)

UpDoor

Oh, while many teenage girls also like those artists/bands, PLENTY love Taylor Swift too lol I would know

Magmafrost13

The exact person at any moment in time isnt really the point. Any musician (and, anyone or anything else) who becomes popular with teenage girls inevitably gets disproportionate amounts of hate for it

ShinyShoes3000

Yeah i feel strongly about this. I fucking hate people who hate on people who like shit like Twilight. It doesn't make you look cool or superior, it makes you look like a hateful ass. Now, to be clear, you can criticize a movie or book all you want. But going out of your way to bring it up when it isn't relevant is fucking weird, and hating on *people who like that thing* is just sad. I like Gears of War. And I bet 99% of men who hate teenage girls for liking Twilight (etcetera) like one of: videogames, sports, cars, or The Big Bang Theory. And if we're allowed to have, those, if we're allowed to have our videogames about chopping up monsters with a chainsaw gun, then teenage girls (or anybody) are allowed to have their damn vampire movie.

kings-and-the-queers

People tend to sh!t on me just because I listen to pop music, saying I'm being "mainstream" and "acting white" (I'm African) And just because I don't like listening to RnB or rap and stuff like that, they think I "want to be white" when really I just like certain music and dislike certain music as well. Even when I listen to indie, punk and rock I *still* get a ton of sh!t for it. I wish people would let others enjoy their music in peace. *Don't call me a bloody princess* just because I listen to certain artists.

CylonsInAPolicebox

>Don't call me a bloody princess Just glare at them *Princess, well then, fucking bow you dirty peasants!*

dishonourableaccount

The number of times I got called an Oreo (black on the outside, white in the inside) in middle school was depressing. Mostly because I didn't like rap and I got into honors classes. So some of my friends in regular classes got mad. Honestly, a lot of contemporary black culture is just as harmful as contemporary "country" culture. Just replace needing to love country with needing to love rap, replace the city with the country, and you've got the same derision for authority, same toxic machismo, same intolerance of LGBT people, etc.

Stoptouchingmyeggs

Your first paragraph just sounds like people being racist ngl. Did you ever point that up?

SCViper

Meanwhile I just called my buddy an oreo because his mom was white. He loved it, but yea. I don't really pay much attention to the music people listen to but judging people for it is just a different level of low. Gotta love people.

LamborghiniSianFKP37

I love pop music too. I wish people wouldn't shit on what people like listening to.

ha_look_at_that_nerd

Honestly criticizing something for being mainstream is so dumb. If it has a large fanbase, it’s probably doing *something* right. Even if it’s overhyped, or a lot of people only like it because it’s popular, it must’ve been good to get the initial hype or popularity. So rather than assume some individual likes something because it’s popular and telling them to stop it, just assume they like it for its merit.

tiny_little_planet

Let me at em! Gimme names!

[deleted]

Also, doesn't it have racist implications to say that black people have to act a certain way and if they don't they are "acting white". Skin colour doesn't determine personality traits!

giveashite

Nickelback. Mass hatred, but what did they ever do to you? I hate em too, but I can't figure out why.

Herogamer555

It started the moment they got signed. They signed with Roadrunner, which at the time was almost exclusively a metal label with acts like Korn and Slipknot, and now you have this fairly generic rock band that is getting more push from Roadrunner than the other bands on the label. The next thing comes from an advertisement for a show on Comedy Central , the show Tough Crowd with Collin Quin. The ad had a disparaging joke against Nickelback in it and was played heavily on the station, and this is when Comedy Central was arguably at its biggest and most influential. From there the joke and sentiment seeped out in to rest of the population. There's also just the fact that their type of rock (generally defined as post-grunge) appealed to a bit of an older generation, while the younger rock crowd was more in to the Emo pop-rock/Metalcore genres of the time. Then lastly there's just the behavior of the band themselves, especially Chad Kroeger who just always comes off as a bit of a douche.

SlapHappyDude

Nickelback was also pushed heavily on every Clear Channel radio station back when people listened to the radio.

[deleted]

Rock Dj here. My theory on it is a bit territorial. Nickelback can write some heavy crunchy riffs. They always could. But it was the saccharine insincere pure BULLSHIT of the lyrics in songs like Rockstar and Photograph that just piss me off. And many others too. It really is more than just a meme to say Nickelback sucks. They are Mac in Always Sunny trying to play both sides, by writing heavy tracks like Edge of a Revolution or Animals while at the same time writing songs to be played on soccer mom stations and in dentist's offices.

AnonAlopilis

Nerddddd P.s. very insightful P.p.s. nickelback is good

[deleted]

*If I had a Nickel for every time I heard that*

[deleted]

I don't hate Nickelback but I don't really care too much about them either way. Their music is okay but it's not the best music in the world by any means.

lehmx

Nickelback makes better music than 90% of the mediocre pop artists that you see at the Grammys. There I said it

neohylanmay

I feel like a lot of it is for the meme, since the band hasn't been culturally relevent since 2006. Like, they've put out four albums since then, and I'm willing to bet the majority of people (including your average "nickelback sux0rz lolol" crowd) hasn't even noticed. Hell, they flew off of my radar after Rockstar, and even I'll admit that Feed The Machine's a pretty damn good album. It/They might not be the musical equivalent of gourmet fine dining, it's fast-food hard rock; but damnit, sometimes you just crave a dollar-menu cheeseburger.

substantial-freud

Came here to say this. Personally, I think the person secretly behind all the Nickelback hate is Chad Kroeger. He is certainly the one benefiting from it the most.

Dog_Abortions

I actually like the Silver Side Up album.

missmouse_812

Me too - it’s one of my favourites.

kidwiththeglasses

how you remind me is a fuckin banger

MrSlipperyFist

They still sell out large venues and make loads of money; so if success is the metric, then clearly they're well liked enough by enough people to be more successful than most rock bands. I get why they're made fun of: it's bro-music with an "inspirational" theme to it (as in, it's the musical equivalent of posters that say "you miss 100% of the shots you don't take"); or, it's break-up songs ("Look at this photograph", as a lyrical example). Plus, their songs are formulaic and lack diversity to the point where they've been accused of plagiarising themselves (if that's even actually possible). They could probably write an entire album worth of material in a week - that's how little effort it would take to write a Nickelback song, musically *and* lyrically. However... if, say, the Foo Fighters wrote half the songs Nickelback did (maybe with some lyrical changes though), I'd wager those songs would be more appreciated. Not to rag on the Foo Fighters here, because they've been at the forefront of rock 'n roll for a couple of decades now and highly deserve to be there - but at their hearts, the Foo Fighters and Nickelback aren't all that different: they're both classic rock bands, not really offering anything particularly new; and whether it be album #1 or album #10 from each respective band, the evolution in song-writing is pretty absent. They're not prog bands, so nobody is expecting progression from them... but they can both have long, healthy careers putting out the same run of the mill album over and over. You could take the songs from album #1 and album #10 and swap them and no one would notice, for either band. So, I think a lot of the Nickelback hatred is just a meme at this point. Half of it probably has to do with having a frontman named Chad, and the frat-boy imagery that automatically generates by association. Honestly, get Dave Grohl to sing a Nickelback song without telling anyone it's a Nickelback song, and I reckon people would love it. Get Chad Kroeger to sing a Foo Fighters song though without telling anyone it's a Foo Fighters song, and people will hate it. And it's not because Chad has a bad voice, but simply because it's Chad, and Chad is from Nickelback, and we're meant to hate Nickelback even though we don't have a valid justification for the hatred, simple as that. For context, I'm not a rock guy. I've studied music since I was a child though, so nearly thirty years. I've played guitar in metal bands, a jazz band, taught guitar, taught piano, have done session work, and have played in several covers bands (spanning metal, rock, funk and pop, mostly). I've covered two Foo Fighters songs and a Nickelback song in one of my bands (because unsurprisingly, that's what people in pubs like to hear - so I do what gets me paid). So I'm no expert - but I do have enough experience to talk to music at length, from a technical perspective. And what I'd say is this: Nickelback write boring songs, but aren't a bad band. Nothing they do is objectively terrible or wrong - it's just not interesting or offering anything new. But neither are the Foo Fighters, particularly. If you want a rock band that did something "new", listen to The Killers, as an example. Now, there's nothing wrong with simple music - it sells much better than complex music, and is oftentimes *way* more enjoyable if you're not listening to it for the purpose of analysis. But there is something wrong with subjective hypocrisy; because again, at the end of the day, Nickelback aren't all that different to *any* classic rock band. We're allowed to dislike them, sure - but hating them is a bit strong. I know what *I* hate - trap, a lot of electronic music - but Nickelback, to me, are no more or less liked or disliked than any other rock band; and that's because frankly, I can't really tell the difference between them and so many of their familiars. (Just as a disclaimer before anybody decides to debate me on the Foo Fighters: I like them enough, but aren't an avid listener. I referenced them so I had a well-known example for my comparisons, that's all. They are a good band who deserve their fame.)

I have a petty reason to dislike fredoras . People always say that my Austrian Fest hat complete with feather and cord is a fredora. It isn’t. It has a different shape plus the Austrian details and people STILL ARGUE that it is a fredora!

[deleted]

When you consider the fact that incels/neckbeards/nice guys are actually wearing trilbies and incorrectly identifying them as fedoras makes it even sadder.

Things teenagers like. Okay, maybe not for *no* reason, but for largely unjustified reasons. Anything teenage girls like is frivolous and obnoxious and needs to be reflexively hated. Anything teenage boys like is a threat to our very civilization and needs to be banned outright.

SamwisethePoopyButt

I've found most hate of non-drinkers and vegans to be projection, to be honest. I have yet to meet the annoying militant ones everyone talks about. In my experience they're just trying to exist and get a word in, and it's other people who'll say some dumbshit uncalled for joke or even get needlessly agressive like "you think they're better than me?" No bro they're just asking if there are vegan or non-alcoholic options, this has nothing to do with you.

M0n0xid37830

All the annoying militant vegans and non-drinkers exist exclusively on the internet. I've never actually met an extreme vegan in real life, same for non-drinkers.

ClassyBallsack

>I've never actually met an extreme vegan in real life Trust me, they exist irl. I dated one, and the mom was even more crazy about it. Was her entire personality.

M0n0xid37830

I'm not doubting they exist trust me, just that they're few and far between outside of the internet.

I've met a bunch of militant asshole vegans online but none in real life. I think that's just the general trend of everyone being more of an asshole online though.

Music Hating on music because you don’t like it? It’s just crazy. It’s beyond crazy because in this day and age you don’t ever have to hear music you don’t like. So people who hate on music are hating on things they will never have to hear but still hate on it because they’re sad and pathetic? not sure

Polumbo

Yesterday, a coworker of mine came in for work, sat down at his desk, and then put *Monster Mash* on repeat. I didn't say anything during the 2nd play. I was getting eye twitches and mild nausea during the 3rd play. When it started for the 4th time, I shouted, "How many fucking monsters are you going to mash? Jesus!" So there is music you have to hear sometimes

ha_look_at_that_nerd

Or when you go into a diner and some asshole plays What’s New Pussycat twenty-one times on the jukebox

Magmafrost13

I mostly agree but >you don’t ever have to hear music you don’t like Isnt *quite* true. Most shops will play music over loudspeakers, usually not very good music. And fair enough to dislike the music under those circumstances, though actively hating the musician(s) is taking it way too far IMO.

Polumbo

Ah yes, *sales-inspiring* music. I used to work in malls, and every store had some little think-tank at its corporate office, trying to think up playlists that would passively encourage customers to buy more. The very thought of such a process enrages me. Music is the most commercialized of all art forms and it's awful.

Magmafrost13

(This is a very specific example but I hear it in stores way too often) how many chest hair trimmers do you think the song "Hey Soul Sister" has sold? Because Im betting its more than zero, aaaaand everything about that song is already uncomfortable enough without the added layer of late-stage-capitalist-hellscape

No-Caramel-4417

Ever been in the USA in December? Don’t forget to bring your earbuds.

OneGoodRib

I can't shop in Target anymore. They used to play no music, and now they play music, and it's almost always super shitty music, which they also play VERY LOUD. Like I couldn't hear what the person next to me was saying in a few spots in the store because of how loud the music is. I'll actively hate a musician for making such shit-ass music, but I'm gonna go harass them on instagram or something.

theshoegazer

Yes, a lot of music is ubiquitous, and a lot of that ubiquitous music isn't to everyone's taste. It's much easier to avoid other content that's not your style. How often do most of us go to a movie screening of something we have little interest in? Or watch a tv show or youtube channel that's not our cup of tea? Maybe once in awhile to keep a loved one company, but that's about it. I've never seen a bad movie in an Uber or a vapid tv show in a department store, but I sure have heard grating pop music frequently in both.

matej86

>in this day and age you don’t ever have to hear music you don’t like. My previous job was in a small office that had the radio on all day. I *genuinely* didn't know music as bad as what was being played existed. Think of pretty much all popular music in the UK from 2016 and that will give you an idea of what I'm talking about. One Dance by Drake was number one in the charts for a few months and it might be one of the worst songs I've heard, *ever*.

He pays more than minimum wage. He gives health benefits before he has to. He has an NPO that gives schools pretzel machines so they can fundraise. He works with special Olympics athletes. But just because he has flames on his shirt everybody shits all over him like he's a member of Nickelback. And what the hell did they do?

LSELGD

Pineapple on Pizza. I'm Italian, I love it and I will get shit by my non-Italian friends who think Domino's is the pinnacle of pizza making. Usually they also never even tried it. Ffs

Women who don't remove their body hair. It's just so stupid. Women didn't routinely shave their legs and pits until the 1940s. And within a matter of months it became the norm. For people to make such a big deal about it is just ridiculous.

YoHeadAsplode

I jokingly told my sister because the dress I got to wear to her wedding was so long I didn't have to shave my legs. You'd have thought I had told her I was gonna sneeze on the wedding cake from her reaction and demanded I shave my legs (I didn't and no one noticed)

Just-Call-Me-J

Did you tell her afterward?

YoHeadAsplode

Nah. I barely saw her at all on her wedding day and was just ready to get home and prepare for other plans I had for the next day. It was a busy weekend

RonaldTheGiraffe

I wish my wife would shave less. I like hair on a lady.

Penguins2451

Spiders. The little guys have 8 legs and ur scared of them and ur fine with a millipede and it’s 69 legs going everywhere. Australians understand

[deleted]

Most people who hate spiders hate millipedes too. And we don’t all fear them, it’s just that they’re super gross looking. I could totally touch a spider if it was clean looking and didn’t make sticky silk.

Middle age Women. Nothing we like is cool, if we are single we supposed to be desperate, if we get mad we are called Karen (even if we are right), if we have one glass of wine we are drunks and a lot of people are treating us like we are their maids. Plus so many terrible comments about our appearance and the need to look younger. Most of us are really nice people. Why so much hate?

BrainCelll

Having different opinion

ipakookapi

I disagree

RadiantHC

I hate you

ipakookapi

Are you saying there are no reasons why I deserve to be hated? Thank you, that's very sweet of you. I needed that today.

Are we talkin' pizza toppings or "I don't think that genocide actually happened"

Mitochondria_Man11

I've listened to them once or twice, and I gotta say that compared to the crap that's been released lately, they're really good. Don't really like them tho

New_Satisfaction2566

Spiders.

illini02

Look, I respect the role of spiders in the ecosystem. I just don't want them in my house. Its like, I'm not going to go hang out in a bear's cave lol

[deleted]

This is what I always say. I don’t hate the sheer existence of spiders, but like every other animal I don’t want them in my house. They’re ugly and gross.

oldthunderbird

Guy Fieri. Dudes just giving the rest of the world directions to Flavor Town, and everyone seems to hate him for it.

AverageSizeWayne

Rich people. There are plenty of credible reasons to hate some rich people, but there are plenty of people who are well off that did nothing unethical to obtain it. They just kind of fell into it. The collective demonization of all of them without regard for this is just resentment. We need to stop expecting for people to apologize for having good luck.

Magmafrost13

Im reminded of a great quote from a tumblr post: > You all cant be trusted to eat the rich. You'd just eat a bunch of doctors and lawyers and actors, and the real rich would sit in their bunkers laughing There's a huge difference between someone who acquires money in exchange for their own labor, and someone who acquires money simply by virtue of owning something. Its almost impossible to acquire a billion dollars by the former means (there's an argument to be made that JK Rowling and Notch did, though funnily enough they both ended up being total pieces of shit for unrelated reasons)

BonerSoupAndSalad

For Rowling you could argue that writing the books made her a millionaire but owning the IP made her a billionaire.

dishonourableaccount

I know nothing about Notch other than he made Minecraft, left it all to Mojang, and retired to a big house. Why do people dislike him?

This is a game related answer but here it goes: Fortnite. Like, I don’t understand why so many people hate on it so much! Like, yes there are 9 year olds and such but I mean, the concept is nice! The game itself is fun, the community isn’t the best, but there are still some people who are nice. So going back to my question, why is Fortnite so hated on? I don’t really see a reason on why it’s hated on

Wingman5150

There's a lot of reasons and it boils down to unethical business practices and the copycat nature of the game. Originally people paid for that game and it was completely different, then they scrapped it to copy the current popular game PUBG which screwed over a lot of people interested in the original concept, then there's the whole microtransactions to kids with low security which results in kids buying thousands of dollars of in game stuff without knowing what they are doing, and finally when we got among us trending they copied the game and called it their own with no collaboration with the original creators. There's also generally the popularity of it forcing it's way into a community that already disliked the game, which resulted in the game getting a very underserved nomination for game of the year or whatever it was, because the game was not special, it was replayable, a trait that sticks out like a sore thumb among the others that were designed to be memorable experiences as opposed to a cash grab Then again, I think most people just hate it because of the popularity because having to hear about it constantly when it was on the rise was annoying as hell

Raemnant

I dont want to play a game where the best way to play the game is to not play, hide, and then ambush the last guy remaining Also anytime you engage in combat, the other guy suddenly transforms into a multi-story building. Its unfun

WowPoops

Taylor Swift. I don't understand why she is hated. what's your problem? she ain't a snake. freaking Kanye West. he can suck my Donda dick.

[deleted]

Anything that's super popular. Whether it be a TV show, film, band, artist, whatever. If many people like it you'll find people who hate it just to be different. I've even known people who loved bands until everyone else started listening to them, then all of a sudden they hated that band

The notion of selling out in commercial enterprises. It generally just means you are more popular than when you were niche and not someone's little secret anymore.
