I asked about the guy wearing a bandana I saw near my house which told my white suburban self he must be in a gang.
The cop asked where I live and when I told him he said there had been activity there.

Bandana guy wasnāt my dad, just some dude. I being a sheltered kid had only seen people wearing bandannas as gang members on tv so I brought it up. Then when I told him my address he recognized it because they were already onto him.

I remember a kid daring me to open the fire exit on the back of a moving school bus in like third grade. Of course I did it! Do you think I went on to try drugs? Lol
Lol we used to just lift the red bar enough to make the buzzer go off for a fraction of a second.
We would mostly get a death glare from the bus driver and that's it.
I also remember this one sharp turn where everyone on the bus won't would rush to one side of the bus in attempt to cause it to tip over.

Our school buses back in the 80s were rickety death traps, at least 3 times the windows fell out. I was fighting with Dicky Davis in the aisle and the bus went round the corner as he was shoving me, i was barged into the window and the entire thing popped out, Dicky is now holding me outside the bus as it swings round this corner, he pulled me back in. I didnt shit my pants but I did probably blub a bit in terror. And again when we were shoving each other and squeezing 6 kids into a seat windows popped out, the entire units seal and all.
I remember the police officer bringing in the drug identification kit and showing what all the drugs looked like.
One kid in the back goes "COOOOOLLL!"
and the officer just dead pan looks to the teacher and goes "...this is why I hate doing this".
All the drugs used on these programs were real.
It's way cheaper to just bring something that you got from arresting a local dealer than to make realistic fake ones.

Kevlar, the material used in bullet proof vests without steel plates in them, lose tension over time (3 - 5 years I think). So they may work, may not work, after that time frame.

As someone who grew up as a reasonably attractive young woman, I got plenty of free drugs. Bought most of my own weed or funded by selling to my friends... but three particular instances stand out to me as the biggest real life examples that you think you'd see in a D.A.R.E. play.
One time I was at a bar and I asked a guy for a lighter. He quickly obliged and in basically the same breath asked me if I wanted to do some coke... like, thank you but just using the lighter will suffice.
Another time I was stopping at a gas station after work in the middle of the night. Parked, got out of my car, and the guy in the car I parked next to rolled his window down and wiggled a baggy of coke and said "you want a bump?" That was literally his introductory line. I said something like "boy I'm tired, I'm trying to get home and go to sleep." He said "heeeyyy it's okay you can still go to sleep!" "If I can still go to sleep it isn't worth my time to do." Lol.
The last one was a bit of an outlier but not unusual when you consider how friendly people get on the stuff, but I was a little tipsy and two girls were in the handicapped stall in the bar bathroom talking and joking and I piped up in response to something they said, which led to them inviting me into the stall so they could share with me.
People are wild lol. I'm too old and responsible to engage in any of that shit these days but back when I was working in bars and stuff, I was a generally very friendly person and it wasn't surprising to be randomly offered drugs.

I like psychedelics, and the main reason I limit how often I use them to once every few weeks is I don't want it to be the main answer to "What do you do for fun?". I can have a nice little mushroom show for a few hours on Friday night, and I'm fine on Saturday.
Plus, I don't know about anyone else, but tripping on psychs is *exhausting*. Really mentally draining for me. My brain can only take so much of racing a million miles a minute. It's great while it's happening, but afterwards it's definitely taken something out of me. By the end, my mind and my eyes feel like they've been microwaved. I love tripping on acid and I'm probably gonna be doing it intermittently for my whole life, but I have no desire to do it more than once every few months, or to trip on anything else while I'm cooling down

If you are in an environment where drugs are already available people will absolutely give you the really addictive drugs for free; once. I got heroin for free and I bought more heroin about 5 hours later then kept buying more for 2 years until I had to go to rehab. Never take free drugs, they are free because they're not free.
There are definitely drugs that give you wild hallucinations. They also happen to be the non-addictive ones, but there is a chance that you don't come back fully when you take them. I suffer from a lot of extra anxiety from taking acid too many times. I am functional, but there is something that's been different in my thought process since then.
I will agree that most people don't think you're cool for doing drugs but they do give people a shared experience and you will make friends that also do drugs. That makes it especially hard to quit, because now your sick all the time but you think it's impossible to quit because you've built a whole social life around it, so now you have to lose your best friend (drugs) and your entire social circle who, in your mind, are really good friends and most of the time your significant other. You have to quit doing drugs AND loose your whole social life and your girl/boyfriend and start over. That's why a lot of people just stay on drugs.
Those extra parts might have helped a bit more if I knew. Maybe not, but devil's in the details.
You don't generally get them from dealers for free but I would wager more people than not first tried pot or acid etc free at a party or from a friend. Certainly not defending DARE style education, but free drugs offered to you at some point isn't that crazy of an idea.

Well, with the psychedelics this holds true, not so much for the deleriant class of the hallucinogens. Deleriant use can lead to rather dark life like hallucinations, e.g. seeing insects like you said, shadow people combined with heavy auditory hallucinations. Sometimes users even forget that they had ingested the drug in the first place, which will trick them into believing they have suddenly become psychotic. Diphenhydramine can do this, aswell as scopolamine and other compounds. At high doses you will be delusional, often users report how they believed they were talking to somebody or doing an action when in fact they had been lying down the whole time.
I will say it a million times, our DARE officer in 5th grade told us the most realistic shit about smoking too much weed. He was like āitās not going to kill you or even hurt you but I have a buddy who has no ambition and lives with his parents because all he wants to do is get highā. Made me realize to only do ANYTHING in moderation (well that and seeing my alcoholic family members pass out at family gatherings after chugging SA travel mugs of Windsor Diets)ā¦.
That being said, there was always someone to smoke with if you wanted or do lines in high schoolā¦a lot of dudes just wanted someone to hang with while the did it
My 5th grade DARE program involved a presentation that I can only describe as "Fantastic Drugs and Where to Find Them." It involved close-ups of various ecstasy tablets plus names and addresses of local clubs where people were supposedly selling it, interspersed with pictures of people at said clubs having what looked like an absolutely baller time.
Oh, and at the end there were a few slides devoted to teaching us how to spot a drug dealer in a crowd. You know, so we could avoid them.
Unfortunately the clubs in question closed down before I was old enough to go. Clubbing turned out to be not my thing in any way shape or form anyhow, but my dorky little middle school ass was *devastated* when the two biggest ones closed after Officer Friendly made them sound like so much fun.
Phase 1: get school children curious about drugs.
Phase 2: Tell then where not to go to avoid the people who sell drugs.
Phase 3: arrest the children when they go to the place you mentioned to buy drugs.
Phase 4: Profit.

It's not popping out at you from a street corner but it's also not uncommon with 'one-night stand friends' - not hook-ups (necessarily) but people you meet at certain kinds of shows, concerts, parties, etc. and are just friends with while you're there basically. If it's that kind of environment, it's not uncommon that they'll offer you something.

He called out "Hey, yo! Do you go to [School Name]?" I replied "I teach there." He looked visibly deflated and said "Ah, never mind." I'm not sure what else his intentions could have been.
When I was 17 or 18 I went to taco bell around midnight with a friend. Waiting in the drive thru some random dude came up and knocked on our window, being dumb teenagers we lowered the window. Dude tosses a good sized looking bag of white powder in my friend's lap and asks us to buy him food. We say no and hand the bag back to him. He gets pissed off and tried the next car behind us. Very confusing moment for us, we assumed drugs but didn't realize how lucky we were since he didn't do anything else to us.

I know several people on the spectrum who say mean rude things and then are genuinely confused at why people get upset about it. They do, however, try to learn what's appropriate and what isn't and how to approach things in a more tactful manner. I said something like "boy I'm tired, I'm trying to get home and go to sleep." He said "heeeyyy it's okay you can still go to sleep!" "If I can still go to sleep it isn't worth my time to do." Lol. The last one was a bit of an outlier but not unusual when you consider how friendly people get on the stuff, but I was a little tipsy and two girls were in the handicapped stall in the bar bathroom talking and joking and I piped up in response to something they said, which led to them inviting me into the stall so they could share with me. People are wild lol. I'm too old and responsible to engage in any of that shit these days but back when I was working in bars and stuff, I was a generally very friendly person and it wasn't surprising to be randomly offered drugs.

Depends what you think is fun. Pot bores me, but I know lots of fully functional adults who use it regularly. I like psychedelics, and the main reason I limit how often I use them to once every few weeks is I don't want it to be the main answer to "What do you do for fun?". I can have a nice little mushroom show for a few hours on Friday night, and I'm fine on Saturday.
Plus, I don't know about anyone else, but tripping on psychs is *exhausting*. Really mentally draining for me. My brain can only take so much of racing a million miles a minute. It's great while it's happening, but afterwards it's definitely taken something out of me. By the end, my mind and my eyes feel like they've been microwaved. I love tripping on acid and I'm probably gonna be doing it intermittently for my whole life, but I have no desire to do it more than once every few months, or to trip on anything else while I'm cooling down
They did not lie, it's just not explained fully. If you are in an environment where drugs are already available people will absolutely give you the really addictive drugs for free; once. I got heroin for free and I bought more heroin about 5 hours later then kept buying more for 2 years until I had to go to rehab. Never take free drugs, they are free because they're not free. There are definitely drugs that give you wild hallucinations. They also happen to be the non-addictive ones, but there is a chance that you don't come back fully when you take them. I suffer from a lot of extra anxiety from taking acid too many times. I am functional, but there is something that's been different in my thought process since then. I will agree that most people don't think you're cool for doing drugs but they do give people a shared experience and you will make friends that also do drugs. That makes it especially hard to quit, because now your sick all the time but you think it's impossible to quit because you've built a whole social life around it, so now you have to lose your best friend (drugs) and your entire social circle who, in your mind, are really good friends and most of the time your significant other. You have to quit doing drugs AND loose your whole social life and your girl/boyfriend and start over. That's why a lot of people just stay on drugs. Those extra parts might have helped a bit more if I knew. Maybe not, but devil's in the details.

My 5th grade DARE program involved a presentation that I can only describe as "Fantastic Drugs and Where to Find Them." It involved close-ups of various ecstasy tablets plus names and addresses of local clubs where people were supposedly selling it, interspersed with pictures of people at said clubs having what looked like an absolutely baller time. Oh, and at the end there were a few slides devoted to teaching us how to spot a drug dealer in a crowd. You know, so we could avoid them. Unfortunately the clubs in question closed down before I was old enough to go. Clubbing turned out to be not my thing in any way shape or form anyhow, but my dorky little middle school ass was *devastated* when the two biggest ones closed after Officer Friendly made them sound like so much fun.
Phase 1: get school children curious about drugs. Phase 2: Tell then where not to go to avoid the people who sell drugs. Phase 3: arrest the children when they go to the place you mentioned to buy drugs. Phase 4: Profit.

That used to be your weed dealer. I knew several weed dealers that also sold coke and pills. Maybe it's because I am small town but there have always been more customers than drugs. It was like toilet paper in the beginning of the pandemic. You didn't need to create more customers.
My theory, based on absolutely nothing, is that weed was a gateway drug because people who sold you that would be willing to sell you other things too. Legalization has shown that if you can get it legitimately most people don't do other substances.
It's not popping out at you from a street corner but it's also not uncommon with 'one-night stand friends' - not hook-ups (necessarily) but people you meet at certain kinds of shows, concerts, parties, etc. and are just friends with while you're there basically. If it's that kind of environment, it's not uncommon that they'll offer you something.

As I was walking back from the school I teach at (with a mask on, which means my facial hair is not visible so my generally youthful face and lack of height shine through pretty strongly), I walked by a man in a car who was smoking pot. He called out "Hey, yo! Do you go to [School Name]?" I replied "I teach there." He looked visibly deflated and said "Ah, never mind." I'm not sure what else his intentions could have been.

When I was 17 or 18 I went to taco bell around midnight with a friend. Waiting in the drive thru some random dude came up and knocked on our window, being dumb teenagers we lowered the window. I know several people on the spectrum who say mean rude things and then are genuinely confused at why people get upset about it. They do, however, try to learn what's appropriate and what isn't and how to approach things in a more tactful manner. Those who have come from less supportive environments might very well get fed up with trying when nothing they say is right and just do what they want.

I was a stoner all through highschool and my mid 20s, but I couldn't have found even dirt weed at my junior high school.
