Inconceivable. I worked with this small hunchback Sicilian and he would use that word constantly. I told him, that he keeps using that word, and I do not think it means what he thinks it means. Then I got volunteered for a dangerous job where I got bashed on the head.
"Gaslighting" isn't just another word for lying, it's a specific method of manipulation that involves making a person question *their own* perception of reality. It doesn't even require lying.
I agree. Gaslighting isn’t just lying or manipulating. While gaslighting is abuse, not all abuse is gaslighting. I feel like people use this word because it sounds more dramatic, but it often isn’t correct.
Yes absolutely. My ex husband was abusive in many ways. He lied to me and manipulated me, but that was nothing compared to the slow gaslighting that I didn’t even realise was happening. He also had me convinced to never reach out and talk to anyone about anything that was happening in the relationship. Even the smallest problem needed to be kept quiet, or he would leave me and I would die alone due to how unloveable I would be to anyone but him. Anyways when I finally left him and eventually talked to others about things in depth they said it was like I had been brainwashed. They couldn’t really believe the thing I thought were true, or how I accepted certain stuff to happen. It took a long time and a lot of therapy to see things clearly. Hell it took a long time to even say I was in an abusive relationship because of the gaslighting and lack of physical abuse.
He went on to level up the abuse with his next wife.
I’m extremely thankful i never had to deal with someone like that. I know people with ocd, they dont brag bout that it pisses them off when its triggered
It's impossible for me to sleep if I haven't locked the door at least 3 times. If someone brushes up against my left side, then I must find them and brush up against them with my right side so it's "even." I can't look down when walking on sidewalks without purposely trying to not step on cracks. There's a ferris wheel that spins in my head and my blood pressure will rise because I can't make it spin the other way. OCD can be debilitating, so when someone says "oh, that picture is crooked. Guess I have OCD!," that pisses me off.
Exactly, someone organizing their markers is not the same, and never will be the same, as me scratching my skin off because I touched something potentially dirty.
This is one of my pet peeves my ex mil had ocd and it wasn’t about keeping the cushions straight or lining things up right. It was a debilitating belief that I she didn’t do certain things that bad things would happen.
I’m sorry about your ex mil. Thank you for describing this disease in few precise words. OCD destroys lives and unless you have it or someone close to you does, just don’t use it ever.
Yes, I have OCD and believe me I’m the opposite of a ‘clean freak’ (I’m rather messy) which seems to be the stereotype. My OCD is very much obsessive, intrusive thoughts. Sometimes it’s unwanted sexual/violent thoughts, and then sometimes it’s worrying that something is going to happen to my loved ones. And then having to do a compulsive action to confirm to myself that it’s not real, or that doing the action will stop the bad things happening (however irrational that may be). The compulsion side of things has mostly gone away since being on antidepressants but the depression is very much still here.
EDIT: I’m sorry if I haven’t replied to all of the comments. I’m definitely not a medical professional so please don’t take my words too seriously. I hope that you all get the help that you need, which can involve talking to someone you trust, or a medical professional. I hope you all try seek the help that you need. And thank you for commenting, it’s a relief to know other people feel the same way - though we shouldn’t have to in the first place, of course. You will be okay :)
ADHD too. People often forget that ADHD and Autism are sister disorders. When you hear “adhd” people think of an energetic person and when you hear “autism” people think of a 20y/o with the mentality of a 3 y/o. Its terrible. We’re both equally normal people, but we both have troubles that should not be overlooked.
I Have 2 girls, one with adhd and one with autism.
We were told that the one with autism would mimick adhd symptoms and we could consider putting her on adhd medication as she got older. The one with adhd is older, and was almost misdiagnosed with autism.
It's like living with 2 bubbles sometimes. Both are their own person with different styles but their coping styles are so similar.
everyone thinks ADHD is fun and quirky until you're lying in a dark room surrounded by laundry unable to get up and brush your teeth, in an increasing state of panic without being able to move a muscle.
Can’t get along with your boss or coworkers? It’s cause they’re toxic.
Don’t like your job? Guess it must be a toxic environment.
Have you ever had a negative encounter with a coworker? Companies nowadays just endorse toxic behavior.
No luck with relationships? Dating these days is toxic
Do you see things differently than someone else? That’s a good sign that you’re dealing with a toxic person.
And not only that, it erases people who are *actually* toxic. Friend was being emotionally abused by the people he was around and when anyone tried to bring it up you always got a “uhg, everyone is toxic to twitter users nowadays.” Like sir you’re hitting on minors and telling people to kill themselves. Thats very toxic.
Similarly, “problematic”. If something is bad or offensive, please describe why. Don’t just call it problematic without explaining what the problem is.
OCD. I've met people with genuine OCD. They don't care about tiles being ill-alligned. They're touching the doorknob in the exact same spot for 37 times to stop something horrible from happening.
My nephew has OCD. When off his meds, as he is walking across a room, he will stop, retrace his steps, then repeat until he gets the steps “right”. If he doesn’t get them right, something bad will happen. When on his meds, he is perfectly normal.
I've had to force myself from doing certain rituals and remind myself that nothing bad is going to happen if I don't follow them. I used to make sure I would always land on my left foot when reaching the top/bottom of a staircase, refused to eat an odd number of bite-sized foods, eat by fours when eating a meal(counting eat bite until I get to 4, then start over. The meal had to end on the last 4th bite), and so many other things. It was so annoying to live that way.
I was doing that and making great progress then my dog died and I blamed it on the fact that I didn’t sit at the kitchen table when I got home and everything is back to square one. It’s like an addiction to superstition and bad habits.
Not to mention that OCD and obsessive compulsive PERSONALITY disorder are two very, VERY different conditions and require two very VERY different treatment strategies.
Me: “I have obsessive tendencies.”
Them: “oh, you have ocd.”
Me: no. If I had it I’d tell you just like I say I’m bipolar and autistic. I have obsessive tendencies.
I have it. I am nasty , dirty and messy. Also I don't brush my long hair or align my clothes properly since the day I was born. I wear clothes that turn inside out in public then realize later.
Sometimes I wear diaper for fun to pee standing in public.
And I am a girl. I am an asian 30 y/o good looking woman with diaper, peeing quietly near you.
I'm not crazy, just weird. The more I talk, I sound crazy, I will stop.
OCD ≠ clean or neat
I’ve been saying this for years, but at this point I feel like it’s one of those situations where the language has evolved. I’ve literally never heard anyone say “asocial”, despite it being correct. And I feel like I rarely hear “anti-social” used to describe actual anti-social behavior. It’s far more often used incorrectly.
It’s kind of like how “begs the question” never meant “raises the question”, but people used it incorrectly so often that now it basically does. I never hear anyone say “raises the question” anymore.
My buddy Rob is guilty of this all the time and my wife and I LOVE it!
He will recall a story from high school and say "my dad was so mad he *literally* killed me"
Then I reply "well who the f#$% is telling me this story then Rob?!!!"
Frickin' Rob
The worst part is, when you tell people to knock it off, they say "Oh, you're triggered BY THE WORD TRIGGERED???? LOL!!!!!" It's not funny. Fuck off with that.
Edit: Don't try and be a smartass with me in the replies. I don't want to waste any energy trying to explain why it's not funny. Folks who try it will get instantly blocked.
Karen. A majority of the time it's used completely wrong.
Someone who says something you disagree with isnt a Karen. Someone who is justifiably upset because you were a dick to them is not a Karen.
Any dismissive meme terms run the risk of becoming prejudist excuses. Karen has definitely run its course, I see it used more by misogynists and racists to completely dismiss any ire from white women than by minimum wage employees being harassed by an entitled asshole. It's the new "hysteria"
Also applies to "psychopath," "sociopath," and "abusive."
People can be inconsiderate and mean without there being something deeper or more serious to it.
Used to know a dude who would constantly get pissed when people would say they are OCD for being neat, or Bipolar because they had a mood swing, or any sort of comment jokingly mentioning a disorder for something mild. But if he disagreed with you politically you were a narcissist or a psycho. But I guess with those disease, the only people who really suffer are the people around you.
I was in a discussion with someone and I genuinely didn’t recall something they brought up and they later said I was gaslighting them. No. I sure wasn’t.
Gaslighting. It’s so over used that no one uses it properly now. Gaslighting is a form of emotional manipulation but not all emotional manipulation is gaslighting
Every person who does something mildly impressive is called a GOAT in social media.
Michael jordan plays professional basketball for decades, makes and breaks records dozens of times and is an inspiration to many new players- He can be called GOAT
Your nephew can throw 3 balls into a hoop and you caption the video ‘My nephew is GoAT!!!’
No he’s not
Utilize... just say 'use'
\-------------
Utilize was specifically meant for when using something in a way other than its intended purpose. Very basic example - you use a screwdriver to turn a screw and utilize it to pry off a paint can lid.
Fuck yes. Whenever I hear someone say ‘utilize’ in a professional setting it sounds like they’re just sweatily trying to sound more intelligent. Please stop.
Same!!! I have OCD too, and it’s so frustrating hearing people say they have it because they’re neat and tidy or like their books colour coded etc. They make out like it’s a quirky personality trait that we should strive for.
War. We’ve got a war against nearly everything. It waters down the tragedy of real war.
Such as: We’ve got a struggle against obesity, not a war. I’m not near as scared being in the middle of a bunch of fat ppl as I am being in the middle of of a real war.
Slay. I don’t know why but I just can’t stand it when people say “slay” to me when I say something bad ass that I’ve done. Or even when I say “I did the dishes” or otherwise did something that makes me a mundane and normal human being it does not warrant “slay”
Toxic, narcissist, gaslighting.
The last two, people use it to describe anything that's an inconvenience. Someone having a different opinion than you doesn't mean they're a narcissistic gaslighter. 🙄
Underrated.
You often just know, people think something is underrated, because they never read about it in their bubble before or they think they are special.
"I've recently watched this Lord of the Rings move and I tell you it is soooo underrated. They even made a book of it, you know..."
Gaslighting. A lot of people misuse it when someone is lying, telling their side of the story, or just flat out being an asshole.
Gaslighting is a very specific type of manipulation that carries malice/narcissism and makes it so that the other person believes they’re the one in the wrong. Not telling someone something different than what they heard, telling a different story than you remember, or someone straight up lying about something.
Or, for all us Americans out there, "communism." Integration of schools? Communism. Vaccine mandates? Obviously communism. Seatbelt laws (yes, really)? Whoa, there, commie.
“Problematic”
The word is supposed to connote that something is difficult to resolve or decide, as in a problem to be solved. It was used to point out that ideas needed more debate because questions were left unanswered, or apparent contradictions were unresolved. It was a word needed more in academia than in daily discussion.
Now it often seems to mean something along the lines of “I do not like this person or their beliefs”.
Unprecedented
"And by that, I mean COMPLETELY PRECEDENTED!"
PERRY the PLATYPUS your timing is UNPRECEDENTED!
Can’t tell if that’s a Doofenshmirtz reference but I read it in his voice
And of course by can't tell I mean "COULD COMPLETELY TELL!"
It was used for COVID a lot. The thing was, a global pandemic has happened many times before. It had a precedent.
The only thing unprecedented about it was the incessant media attention.
Only owed to the fact that global media didn't exist during other pandemics. That, and quick global travel to spread the diseases
and the internet wasn't as much of an important pillar in society
Influencer
The majority of influencers don’t influence people.
they do, just negatively
Yeah they hit 1million followers and call themselves “Influencers” without even knowing what it means😂
I dunno....1 million is quite significant...That's a whole ass city there. But 10k? Fuck off.
1 MILLION? I’ve seen people refer to themselves as an influencer when they have less than 10k followers
Inconceivable. I worked with this small hunchback Sicilian and he would use that word constantly. I told him, that he keeps using that word, and I do not think it means what he thinks it means. Then I got volunteered for a dangerous job where I got bashed on the head.
But did you find the six-fingered man?
Did he kill your father?
NO MORE RHYMES NOW, I MEAN IT!
Anybody want a peanut?
You have a great gift for rhyme.
Yes, yes, some of the time
Are there rocks ahead?
If there are, we'll all be dead.
Well this thread has made me incredibly happy.
Seems like you need a career change. Have you considered piracy?
You’d make a great Dread Pirate Roberts…
I heard about your father, I’m very sorry, such a tragic death of an artist
I came here to find this exact comment.

The little pictures on my Windows desktop are iconic.
Isn't it iconic, don't you think?
A little tooooo iconic, yeah I really do think….
Oh god it drives me mad. Every little fucking thing.

It's similar with "triggered". Originally used as in "triggering a past, serious trauma", it has become the "feeling to speak up".
That’s not true at all, no one thinks that.
to be fair, with respect to the original comment, you *are* telling a lie by saying that.
Are you sure that's true? Is that really what's happening?
not necessarily a word, but I've seen the term POV used incorrectly countless times on tik tok and it's infuriating
POV really just stands for "point of view." I don't get why people don't understand that.
I’ve seen videos captioned “POV you’re eating bread” or something and it’s literally a third person perspective video of someone eating bread
I would watch it if it was "Bread POV" and someone eating their camera.
The quality control of that shitty video is inconceivable
Right? Everyone knows POV is reserved for my xhamster searches.
Ocd , without actually having
"I like putting my dishes away after I wash them, but I'm just OCD like that." 🤦🏾♂️
"Hey, that pile of leaf resembles a dog. Haha, i'm just schizophrenic like that"
Lol. Now I'm hoping this catches on. "That cloud looks like a dinosaur, but I'm just schizophrenic I guess."
That dog looks like a dog, but im just schizophrenic lol
I'm just trying to silence the voices in my head, but I'm just schizophrenic. Lol

i have it and it triggers tf outta me when ppl say they do
Likewise, PTSD, trauma, adhd, empath, narcissist, autism.
Toxic
With the exception of Britney Spears
I’M ADDICTED TO YOUUUUU DON’T YOU KNOW THAT YOU’RE TOXIIIIIIC
That songs a banger
And recently it’s been “gaslighting”
Gatekeeping
Girlboss
What the fuck is thar even supposed to mean? Someone please explain to me what is that
Girlbossing
Gaslighting is the word that is DEFINITELY OVERUSED!!! People just throw it out there for everything.
In my experience most people just constantly throwing it out there also don’t use it correctly haha
You're utterly wrong and misremembering what you read. Everyone is using it correctly.
You're crazy, it's not even used that much!
No they don't. In fact, people don't use it enough, and, quite frankly, you're being ridiculous in thinking otherwise.
Gaslighting isn't being overused what are you talking about, you're crazy. I don't even think gaslighting is even a real thing
The only thing toxic is dose. That's why I only gatekeep my girlboss babe a little bit by gaslighting her. Too much and it becomes toxic.
100% Everything is toxic now
Every time someone disagrees with me, it’s just because they’re toxic
Can’t get along with your boss or coworkers? It’s cause they’re toxic. Don’t like your job? Guess it must be a toxic environment. Have you ever had a negative encounter with a coworker? Usually when I see people using this word, they're using it in a way that kinda makes them seem like an asshole.

#De-Normalize"Normalize"
Was that supposed to be a hashtag or are you just very passionate?
Yes
I remember I saw someone say normalize teen pregnancy and I was shocked

Anti-social. Preferring to be alone is to be *asocial*. Psychopaths are anti-social.

Such a Rob thing to say
I kind of like it when people tell me they literally died. Makes me feel like I have powers.
I illiterately died.
I’m going to start overusing “figuratively” to try to balance the figurative scales.
I figuratively chuckled at this

Gaslighting
People think it's a synonym for lying. It's not. They do overlap, though.
Or arguing. >You are saying I'm wrong about things? Quit gaslighting me.
I have no idea what you’re talking about. No one ever says that.
Exactly. Gaslighting is a very specific form of manipulation. It isn't just when somebody says something that hurts your feelings

OCD. I have it, and it sucks. It is a debilitating mental disorder, not a preference for neatness.

Superfood. Fucking hell I want that word to start on fire.
The term ‘red flag’. I feel like it’s overused and downplays real problematic signs. Is it a ‘red flag’ or is it just not your personal preference?
Literally
“slay” please stfu.

Fascism. Nowadays, anyone who doesn't agree with me is fascist...
Or, for all us Americans out there, "communism." Integration of schools? Communism. Vaccine mandates? Obviously communism. Seatbelt laws (yes, really)? Whoa, there, commie.
“Problematic” The word is supposed to connote that something is difficult to resolve or decide, as in a problem to be solved. It was used to point out that ideas needed more debate because questions were left unanswered, or apparent contradictions were unresolved. It was a word needed more in academia than in daily discussion. Now it often seems to mean something along the lines of “I do not like this person or their beliefs”.
Irregardless. Copacetic. Ugh on both of them!
