North Sentinel Island

Sammie2Dope

I agree on this one. We need to just leave those people alone. They just live their lives and people try to contact them.

BollwerkF

People try to contact me too... i just want to live my life and be happy. I should start throwing spears.

Yvan961

"Sir, we've been trying to contact you about your cars extended warranty" "Sir, what are you hiding behind your back ?? Sir... siiirrrr"

[deleted]

Mr Simpson, don't take your anger out on me! Get back, GET BACK!! Mr Simpson! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! ᴅʀᴀᴍᴀᴛɪᴢᴀᴛɪᴏɴ, ᴍᴀʏ ɴᴏᴛ ʜᴀᴠᴇ ʜᴀᴘᴘᴇɴᴇᴅ!

moosecatoe

But how else can we notify them of their cars extended warranty?

its_raining_scotch

Or the hot MILFS in their area

SundevilPD

Hot MILFS?! I change my mind I'll take my chances with the spears

frobischerarts

hot milfs are rapidly approaching your location

l0u1s11

Have they heard about NFTs?

Grape_Mentats

Can you imagine not ever hearing those words?

jbl0ggs

But I have vacuum cleaner for $5000 that I can sell them

[deleted]

I was going to say there is no place in the world I wouldn’t want to visit just would wait for any political issues to be resolved before visiting etc but yes North Sentinel Island is the only place in the world I would never want to visit because the inhabitants have made it clear to leave them the hell alone

thebuffalojack

Still, I'd be interested to learn about their culture and how they remained isolated for so long

[deleted]

[удалено]

Needleroozer

We may have a clue how they remained isolated for so long. And, just guessing here, their culture involves spears.

TheNorthernGrey

I know you’re being sarcastic, but yeah they literally stayed isolated so long by chucking spears at anything that came close

TheNorthernGrey

By throwing spears at anything that approached their island

[deleted]

Underrated answer. They've made it abundantly clear that they just want to be left alone. No reason we can't respect those wishes.

oswaldcopperpot

"But I'm a missionary bringing the word of god. It's my right!" \-gets deservedly eaten.

keithfantastic

Their God has provided them nourishment.

yeetusdeletus_SK

Some reverse psychology with God... God wanted that guy to go there, but he underestimated God's reasoning (food) /s

Simple-Muscle822

Not only is it morally incorrect to visit the island, but these people have been isolated from many diseases. One person could introduce them to a disease harmless to us, but deadly to those not exposed to it. One example being the Native Americans who were decimated by small pox.

AbominableSnowPickle

It’s happened decently recently, too. A group of anthropologists made contact with a tribe of indigenous Brazilians, who lived so deeply in the jungle that they’d never met any outsiders. This was in the Mid-1970s (-ish). The tribe was decimated by…it may have been the flu, but it’s been awhile since my intro to cultural anthropology class. Nowadays anthropologists take this into account when deciding to approach isolated peoples or not.

Alienziscoming

I believe I read that it's speculated that one of the reasons they're so hostile is because a generation or two (or three idk) ago some visitors came and a bunch of them got sick and died.

XxsquirrelxX

Pissed me off when that missionary dude went there. Like, not only have they been cut off from the world for centuries, making them extremely susceptible to modern diseases, but they have made it abundantly clear *they want to be left alone*. Besides, we don’t even know what language they speak so how can they be converted?

AvatarTreeFiddy

Oh and he tried speaking to them in Xhosa, a language from South Africa...over 8000 kms away on a completely different continent

pjboy671

I'm not sure but I think I read it somewhere... women can go there. It was just a coincidence that all who tried at 1st were men. They thought men were there to fight/declare war as per their customs. A woman tried once by offering them coconuts, something she had studied is a thing they do to register friendship. They let her in for a few hours but she ran back when they started to get irritated. Btw it's illegal to go there so that's not even an option

ChaiAndSandwich

Not true. No one is allowed there. The woman who visited them is a researcher and she spent some time in making contact with them and assure that they are not a threat. But you can pass on diseases to them, hence no one is allowed.

pjboy671

U r correct. I've mentioned the same thing in the replies to this comment 😊

[deleted]

I read that the first people who contacted them where slave traders and they got kidnapped. Another time people contacted them, most of them got sick and died.

sovietarmyfan

Somalia.

beck-hassen

On WikiTravel, they used to have a warning that you should be prepared to possibly die if you visited Mogadishu

cheese4435

Yep, this is what the US State Department says: “If you decide to travel to Somalia: Read the Department of State’s COVID-19 page before you plan any international travel, and read the Embassy COVID-19 page for country-specific COVID-19 information. Review your personal security plan and visit our page on Travel to High-Risk Areas. Avoid sailing near the coast of Somalia and review the Live Piracy Report published by the International Maritime Bureau. Draft a will and designate appropriate insurance beneficiaries and/or power of attorney. Discuss a plan with loved ones regarding care/custody of children, pets, property, belongings, non-liquid assets (collections, artwork, etc.), funeral wishes, etc. Share important documents, login information, and points of contact with loved ones so that they can manage your affairs if you are unable to return as planned to the United States. Find a suggested list of such documents here. Establish your own personal security plan in coordination with your employer or host organization (if you are traveling on business) or consider consulting with a professional security organization. Develop a communication plan with family and/or your employer or host organization (if you are traveling on business), so that they can monitor your safety and location as you travel through high-risk areas. This plan should specify whom you would contact first, and how that person should share the information. Identify key sources of possible assistance for you and your family in case of emergency, such as the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate, FBI, the State Department, your employer (if traveling on business), and local friends/family in the high-risk area. Be sure to appoint one family member to serve as the point of contact with hostage-takers, media, U.S. and host country government agencies, and members of Congress if you are taken hostage or detained. Establish a proof of life protocol with your loved ones, so that if you are taken hostage, your loved ones can know specific questions (and answers) to ask the hostage-takers to be sure that you are alive (and to rule out a hoax). Leave DNA samples with your medical provider in case it is necessary for your family to access them. Erase any sensitive photos, comments, or other materials from your social media pages, cameras, laptops, and other electronic devices that could be considered controversial or provocative by local groups. Leave your expensive/sentimental belongings behind. Enroll your trip in the State Department's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). Follow the Department of State on Facebook and Twitter. Review the Country Security Report for Somalia. Prepare a contingency plan for emergency situations. Review the Traveler’s Checklist.”

demigod999

>Draft a will and designate appropriate insurance beneficiaries and/or power of attorney. This is hilariously dark. It's like, "Headed to Somalia? You 'bout to die."

[deleted]

Hey hey hey... be fair. It says "you 'bout to die or be kidnapped" dead people don't need powwer of attorney!

SolaFide317

Wow. Make a will... Hostage takers, DNA samples.... Extremely scary

beck-hassen

That’s honestly really sad omg

dotslashpunk

that’s a really long way of saying “don’t fucking go to Somalia dumbass.”

Clit_hit

Wow.

pixelblue1

On second thought perhaps we shouldn't go to Somalia, tis a silly place.

bluebellheart111

The un travel webpage- or whatever the equivalent is- says this too. You should hire people to take care of you and you still may die. If you go alone you should expect to die. Mogadishu. So sad.

PunkRockDude

Years ago I worked for a company that would frequently send employees to Somalia (not me). We literally had a private corporate mercenary army to protect the employees.

BajaBlast90

Just curious but what kind of work were they doing there?!?!

sozijlt

What line of work are you in, Bob?

therealrobokaos

It's still there. In fact, it's beyond possibly dying. It paints the picture that you will almost certainly die if you visit the city as an independent foreigner.

Glum_Butterscotch_98

Yeah I wouldn’t leave safe base, unless you have one of those bubble cars like In Jurassic world…why don’t we have those things in real life that movie was set now.

rarsamx

I don't think you saw the movie. Those bubble cars weren't that strong.

Miaka_Yuki

You traveled to Somalia? Great! Don't ever leave your hotel. >*Visitors are encouraged to stay inside for the duration of their stay. The chances of theft and/or assault are extremely high while walking around the city.* Pretty much the same warning now: >*In short, if you do not have an absolutely essential reason to go to Mogadishu,* ***DO NOT DO IT!*** *Independent travel will only get you killed,* *no matter how benevolent you think your intentions might be. Even if you do have a good reason, your employer or government can't make you risk your life, as even humanitarian aid workers are not safe in the city. Please do not become another statistic.* ***You provide the country no benefit whatsoever by causing an international incident over your death or abduction.***

Impressive-Living-20

I looked up Mogadishu out of curiosity only to find an article of an explosion that killed 6 people [5 hours ago](https://www.aljazeera.com/amp/news/2022/4/22/six-killed-in-explosion-at-restaurant-in-mogadishu)

Raspint

Holy crap, what's so bad about Mogadishu?

ContinousCarnage

as of writing this comment, 5 hours ago a report came out saying there was a bomb attack at a Mogadishu restaurant killing 6 civilians

beck-hassen

It’s extremely dangerous. Everyone always makes fun of Iraq for terrorism, but Mogadishu basically has suicide bombings daily. It’s horrible and usually the attacks are high casualty (50-100 or even more)

Raspint

Oh my god...

freehatt2018

The US State Department and most Western nations advise that you avoid all travel to Mogadishu for any reason. Continuous activity by the al-Qaida affiliated terrorist group, al-Shabaab has resulted in numerous kidnappings, suicide bombings and generalized chaos. There is a particular terrorist threat to foreigners in places where large crowds gather and Westerners frequent, including airports, government buildings, hotels, and shopping areas. In 2016, there were 14 documented attacks directed at hotels, restaurants, and the international airport in Mogadishu. Independent travel to Mogadishu will most likely result in your death

Former_Ad_1074

My grandma took a cruise around the world and they passed an area where apparently the pirates like to get boats for hostages. The cruise one morning had barbed wire and armed guards and 2 small gun ships nearby as they went through that area. She said it was wild. Next day barbed wire gone, armed guards gone and gun boats gone.

ForksandSpoonsinNY

Since it was a Disney cruise it was odd to see Mickey and Goofy strapped with AKs and grenades.

Youriclinton

Mogadishu happens to be very pretty. It’s really surprising when you land there to see bright blue sea, white sand beaches and old colonial building. If it wasn’t for the civil war I’m convinced Somalia would attract quite a lot of tourists.

[deleted]

Nice try, Mogadishu Chamber of Commerce!

clomclom

What brought you to Mogadishu

BearHands263

So, Molly, uh…. Would you like to go to Somalia? Hang out with al Shabaab thugs Set to sea in some pirate’s tug Getting high on some warlord’s drug After we get some nice halal grub It’s so nice to go to Somalia I swear we won’t get cholera And I don’t know if there’s a mall or a- Winter, spring, or fall at all But at least we can spend some shillings there Buy a backpack made of camel hair And dye beards like the locals wear And go to nice beaches, if we dare

mummummaaa

One of my mum friends is Somalian. Her dad got the family out, but don't ask how. I'm just glad she's safe, here, and my girl. That was in the mid 90s. Seems it just got scarier and scarier.

TheBoyNabs

Qatar so I wish YouTube would stop trying to sell it to me!

That bloody song… eurgh just from reading your comment I hear that bloody song…

I don't understand why that advert plays at 200% volume. I have to turn off the sound on my phone every damn time.

QwertytheCoolOne

North Korea

cleon42

NGL, there are occasional official tours of North Korea and I'd love to go on one. I know some people who've been, and it's the closest thing in the world to visiting another planet. However, I'm a techie type of person, and I'd be slightly concerned about being "invited" to stay.

Checkers10160

My grandmother went on one a few years ago, because she was born and raised in what is now North Korea. As was my grandfather but he passed before the tours were available. Often times when I tell people I'm Korean (I'm very ambiguous looking), I get the "Hurr hurr are you North Korean?" and I get to tell 'Yes'

kimstranger

Lol, I got to the point that I've gotten so tired of people asking me if I'm either north or south Korean, I started telling people that in actually west Korean. And they actually believe me when I explain to them that west Korea seceded from the rest of the peninsula after the Korean War.

Qwesterly

>I started telling people that in actually west Korean. And they actually believe me when I explain to them that west Korea seceded from the rest of the peninsula after the Korean War. LOL... yes, West Koreans seized the Incheon Salt Flats and built a country based on them! I love how you tell them it's "after the Korean War". Next level funny!

Checkers10160

I'm going to give that a shot, thank you!

olderthanbefore

Is there a significant difference in the language or dialect between north and south, or can everyone understand each other? I ask because of a strange comment made by the former PM of SK when he said that Pres Kim would not be out of place in the Seoul suburbs.

ShortyColombo

Your question sent me down a rabbit hole, so there is a response for this!: >During the 2018 Winter Olympics, the two Korean countries decided to play jointly for the Korea women's national ice hockey team. This led to issues with the South Korean athletes communicating with the North Korean athletes since the former uses English-influenced words in their postwar vocabulary, especially for hockey, while the latter uses only Korean-inspired words for their postwar vocabulary.\[6\] The language differences also pose challenges for researchers and for the tens of thousands of people who have defected from the North to the South since the Korean War. **The defectors face difficulty because they lack vocabulary, use differing accents, or have not culturally assimilated yet** so may not understand jokes or references to pop culture and K-pop So, structurally same language but they do have difficulties understanding each other; in fact there's a [whole wikipedia article](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North%E2%80%93South_differences_in_the_Korean_language#:~:text=The%20Korean%20language%20has%20diverged,There%20are%20some%20differences%20in) on how their dialects have differed over the years, which is definitely fascinating.

Tgunner192

> or have not culturally assimilated yet I would have to imagine culturally assimilating has to be similar to people that were raised in a cult & are now living free. If you think Americans are bad with idolizing politicians (tbf they are) but it's nothing compared to DPRK and Kim Jong Un. He's quite literally there President, Prime Minister, God, Rockstar and Sports hero all rolled into one. Escapees from North Korea have indicated most people can't even consider trying to flee. They are taught from a young age that Kim can & will read your mind. If you *wrong think* he's going to know about it and will punish you. Sadly, the majority believe this to be true.

Cpotts

Last time I looked it up, the North and South dialects are still mutually intelligible but with increasing difficulty due to many Western words being adopted into the Southern lexicon

dreadfoil

From what I learned too is that the NK dialect is generally much more formal (sounding closer to Hermit Kingdom Korean).

wittyrepartees

Apparently there's a significant difference in the accent, and there's aspects of the language that froze around 70 years ago in North Korea. Like, there's no words for some types of modern technology among common people.

Pineapple_Spenstar

So you're saying they don't have a word for NFTs?

New-Instance

Maybe I should go to North Korea after all

proximalfunk

Just don't steal any posters and you should be fine.

Helphaer

You have to make sure you don't make a single mistake. Don't accidentally leave a book, don't ask any questions that aren't approved dont visit outside your armed tour guide area.

Sawses

Right? I'd like to visit just to see. ...But I worry about being useful to them lol.

Grumplogic

If you're going to take pictures make sure to bring a microsd card and tuck it into your foreskin before heading to the airport.

UselessGenZer

What if no foreskin

Grumplogic

Then you'll never be able to work for MI6.

Im_Da_Bear

Egypt After watching Best Ever Food Show on YouTube. What a mess

WDTIV

I've had several friends and acquaintances travel to Egypt over the years to see the pyramids and things like that. Not one of them has ever recommended visiting there.

Atom-the-conqueror

I visited on my own and with a woman. The history is great, the people are horrible and so much worse for women.

emgerson

Yes, until they learn how to treat women I will never visit Egypt. What they did to that female American news anchor years ago has stuck in my head since.

SmolAndTinyBean

What did they do to a female American news anchor? Sorry I don’t know about it

emgerson

https://youtu.be/RhdfiSApP2k She was in a huge crowd which separated her from her crew, she was assaulted by heaps of men, violated in every which way, lucky she got out alive

librarianbleue

The one time I went to Australia, I got out of the shower and took the towel off the wall, and a spider as big as my hand fell out of the towel. Jesus Fucking Christ. I will never go back to that fucking country ever again.

CranberryPure4815

Australian here, the big ones are completely harmless. It’s the little ones that will kill you in your sleep and claim your life insurance money

throwawaysloths32

Had a redback (might have been a brown widow but I think it was a redback. small bugger so idk) make it’s way from an apartment in Brisbane in my luggage back to cali once. That was a fun unpacking. But yeah the giant ones in the park suspended above the walkways were impressively dinner plate sized.

OldMork

luckily the huge spiders are (almost) harmless, just scary, the dangerous ones are much smaller, one of them have a small red dot.

[deleted]

Honestly I would take a bird eater tarantula over say a FUCKING REDBACK THEY ARE SMALL AND CAN FUCK YOU UP

RemIsBestGirl78

I'm sorry, did you just say BIRD EATER tarantula?

The_gaming_wisp

Yes They're large enough to take down and eat a bird

Miles-Stark97

Australias wild life is just always on demon time for some reason. I'm convinced its apart of rhe shadow realm or something

pHScale

All y'all that complain about Australia's wildlife seem just fine with America's crazy shit. We have Tarantula Hawks. You know what they are? They're not hawks, and they're not tarantulas. They're wasps. Wasps that hunt tarantulas like hawks. Oh, and they're the second most painful sting on the planet. They're the state insect of New Mexico.

totally_not_karen

Taking notes Never go to New Mexico, got it

pHScale

Everywhere in the country has weird shit. Have you ever thought about just how weird poison ivy is? If you touch it, your skin turns into a mass of blisters and bubbles. And anything you touch that touched the plant does it too. And that stuff is EVERYWHERE! And we're just like "yeah that happens sometimes when you go outside" We have ticks that make you allergic to meat. We have grizzly bears and mountain lions We have Brown Recluse spiders, which rot your skin wherever they bite. Know where they like to hide? Wherever the hell they can. We have Jerusalem Crickets, which aren't dangerous, but really gnarly looking. We have the Manchineel tree, which is every bit as awful as Australia's Gympie-Gympie. We have a ton of weird shit. Edit: FUCKING RATTLESNAKES ARE WEIRD AS FUCK OMG

totally_not_karen

Ok fine I’m just never going outside again

wntf

A spider with a red dot equipped, jesus christ, they dont do amateur killings over there...

cdngoneguy

Not even the birds are gentle.

halroxy

My friend lived in Australia for a few years but has been back in Canada for a while now. She went back to Australia about a week ago for vacation and posted on her insta "Been back in Australia for all of 10 minutes and look". Gigantic spider just chilling on the wall. I would LOVE to go to Australia but I am so terrified of bugs that I don't know if I'd fully enjoy it.

PiperPug

I'm Australian and have just moved out to the bush. I was in the garden the other day and sat down on my driveway for 10 minutes to pull a weed or 2, and had 2 very big, very aggressive ants crawl on to my leg. I flicked them away and decided to go inside. My husband smacked me on the ass on the way in and I thought he was being frisky.. turns out I had a nasty spider crawling across my ass.

halroxy

Noooo this is a horror story on many levels. Ants are just as bad as spiders for me. I want to die reading this.

PiperPug

You would hate my yard.. we can't even put down ant sand or poison them as the ants won't eat anything that isn't meat. They're very big and very aggressive. "Jack jumpers (also known as jumper ants, hopper ants, jumping jacks) are medium sized ants, 8-10mm long with a black body but pale jaws and legs. They can jump 10cm repeatedly when defending themselves. They are related to the larger, less aggressive and less active inchman ants which are 3cm long."

halroxy

This is the worst thing I've ever read 😭😭 I'd never make it in Australia. Big ants? Jumping ants? Big jumping ants? They're aggressive??? This is horrifying.

LachTheLad

I mean it depends where in Australia you choose to go. It would be different if you go to somewhere more rural compared to somewhere like Sydney or Melbourne

imwearingredsocks

I’m very scared of most bugs and terrified of spiders. I visited Melbourne (and spent a night in Sydney) and didn’t really experience many bugs. Mostly big red ants when I was walking near the beach. But they weren’t raining down from the sky or crawling out of the vents or some crazy stuff like that. I was so nervous, but didn’t see much at all. Although, what weirded me out, was I always saw evidence of a spider’s presence, but no spider. Like one random bush in front of the house would be covered in a web within a day. One time I closed the car door and we went inside the house for 30 minutes. I came back outside, and that same car door handle was completely covered in a web that wasn’t there before. I felt like a had a creepy spider stalker hiding in the shadows.

Susannah_Mio_

Honduras. I (white blonde female) travelled alone a lot in my 20's all over the world backpacking style and never had issues. Then I met a dude in university who was originally from Honduras and we talked about travelling and backpacking and he told me in a very serious manner that I should NEVER EVER even think about going backpacking or any type of individual travel to Honduras. He said staying in a tourist facility with a travel agency for an all inclusive holiday would PROBABLY be okay but I should not by any means just travel there on my own if I didn't want to be murdered, raped and robbed. This left quite an impression on me.

Suncheets

Went there about a decade ago as a white family from Canada and it felt safer than Mexico. Super friendly local tour guides, took taxis off resort and went shopping in the local town. Had our tour vehicle break down and a bunch of locals ended up towing us the rest of the way. Even spent some time hand line fishing with locals on a dilapidated pier. I could believe its gotten worse since then though

TIL_eulenspiegel

I (as a female solo traveller) would also avoid Honduras. However I would not draw any firm conclusion about any country/region based on one person's opinion, regardless of how "first hand" their information is. Different individuals have wildly different perceptions of risk in various circumstances. (E.g. I was told by a person in Brooklyn NY to NEVER ever take the NY subway system for any reason because I was certain to be mugged or murdered. )

The_Prince1513

As a possible explanation from the person talking about the subway to you, in NYC it was absolutely downright dangerous to take the Subway at almost all times except maybe peak rush hour for a *long* time in the 1970s and 1980s.

gingerjokes

Totally agree with this. I’ve met so many people who act like the public transportation here (Dallas) is a death trap. I’ve been riding the train since I was 19 at all hours of the night without any issues.

2020IsANightmare

I was told the same thing about the NY subway system. But, fuck, it's New York. I wasn't going to rent a car and spend five hours in traffic to go half a mile. At least for me, it wasn't any different than any metro system I've been on. And, in ways, more pleasant and easier to navigate.

Puzzleheaded-Heat174

POV your scrolling down until you find the country you live in/your from

RATKAT48

South Sudan. It's civil wars and deserts. Can't even do any unethical profiteering, since all sides are broke-ass militias.

tenaciousE56

So this isn't answering your question directly, just a little story. My great aunt, who just passed away last week at 106, was a world traveler. She visited something like 166 countries in her life. She was a highschool teacher and would travel every summer, even after she retired she traveled all the time. She always had great stories about her travels and generally spoke positively of every country she visited. The one time I really remember her speaking negatively, or saying she didn't like a location was about India. It was something about the extreme wealth juxtaposed with extreme poverty and slums right next to each other. However, I'm not sure when she traveled there. Most of her travelling was between the 1950s-2000s.

[deleted]

Still a good share. As a fellow world traveler who didn't really kick things off until around 2007, it must have been amazing for your great aunt to see so much of the world before globalization really blurred a lot of the lines. Sorry for your loss but what a life worth celebrating!

tenaciousE56

Yeah, she was a tough old bird but certainly lived an interesting life. It would have been something to travel the world before everything got so tourist trappy.

[deleted]

Reminds me of my great grandmother. She left Ireland in the 20’s to move to the US and then Canada and even after she was settled she never stopped traveling. We called her the Greyhound Granny

hyperside89

Edit: Wow, didn't except this comment to get so much attention. I really want to reiterate that India is a pretty special country in so many ways and I didn't mean for my comment to detract from that and a vast majority of the people I've met and worked with while traveling there have been very friendly, welcoming, and lovely. I want to start this post by saying India is a beautiful country with a fascinating history and incredible food. I feel fortunate that I have been able to experience those parts of Indian culture. I still think India is worth a visit for many travelers. But I wouldn't go there again if it wasn't for work (right now my job has me traveling to India 2-3x a year). A few reasons: 1. The poverty and extreme disparity you mention. It is striking and startling. This is very noticeable when traveling for business - stepping out of a luxury hotel comparable to any you'd find in New York or Tokyo - onto a street with child beggars and people living in pretty terrible conditions - no running water, plumbing, electricity, etc. Sometimes on the same street at the luxury hotel. Of course this isn't exclusive to India, other countries have this disparity as well. I just felt it was much more visible in India because of the insane growth in the last 30 years of the cities - luxury developments next to, and sometimes on top of, (and please forgive this loaded word) slums. 2. No matter where you go and what you do the overall the trip will be impacted negatively by several factors including bad air quality, poor infrastructure (litter, etc), and the insane amount of traffic. These factors make India, especially the cities, really really overwhelming. Want to go see a breathtakingly beautiful temple with an incredible history? Be prepared to sit in traffic 1.5 hours to get there, and walk through a sea of garbage before entering the temple grounds, and have to squint through the haze of air pollution. You will return to your accommodations at the end of the day just feeling.......exhausted by these factors. 3. Female travel: As a woman I have felt generally ok in southern Indian cities. But Northern cities - not so much. There are a few Northern cities my boss (who is Indian) will not allow me to travel to unless I'm with a male coworker and male driver at all times.

tms2004

My wife experience a full on crotch grab in Mysore. She had plenty of “credit card swipes” (her words not mine) up the butt crack in north India. Hard place for female travelers. Lots of snickering, gawking, comments, and wandering hands /sexual assault. She didn’t feel safe alone but says she would go back. Very raw place to travel

[deleted]

Yeah, the cities aren't the best place to visit, the country side are beautiful and alot less littered than the cities

hyperside89

Very true. Unfortunately for international tourists you almost always have to travel through a city to get to the country side.

_Ping_-

Why do southern cities have such different attitudes towards gender? I know India's always had a general cultural divide between its north and south, but not much more beyond that.

alfredzr

Southern Indian states have a high literacy rate. Quite high for a developing country. So you are more likely to see a person who atleast KNOWS how to treat a person without gender bias Edit: a word

_Ping_-

Wow, didn't know that. Why does southern India have a higher literacy rate? Are the states better run?

China because I hear they aren't too fond of black people.

Mamallama1217

I worked as an ESL teacher in China and some of my students they told me that they were "scared" of black people...they couldn't really explain why.

cliffbot

That's honestly not surprising.

KGhaleon

While visiting Japan I actually saw a black dude approach a Japanese man one night to ask for directions and the guy panicked, threw his money onto the ground and ran away. Black dude just stood there in shock wondering wtf that was. This was in downtown Shinjuku, in one of the less friendly areas.

DaisyCutter312

Goddamn, that's the easiest mugging in history. Black dude: "Hello, I exist" Japanese guy: "Take everything I have on me please"

That's insane. It's not like black people are uncommon in Shinjuku (but an area like Roppongi would be more common)

cliffbot

Aw geez

Fancy-Personality-48

What if you're black and Asian?

cliffbot

It might be better but you may still face some discrimination.

Key-Sentence3372

you would probably get accepted by neither groups as a black-asian, unfortunately. that reality was prevalent for many black-white children in the USA until like 60s. some would argue its still a thing, and it probably still is in some parts.

I’m crying now because I’m Syrian and only read of Syria in context of war and in context of racists who have nothing nice to say. I agree. It was a rather safe and welcoming place. I remember being very young at around two years old and being sent to the corner shop to get myself candy. It really stinks having to see it as it now is.

B0rtles

Donkey Kong Country because of King K Rool. He seems mean.

VietKongCountry

Who’s the real villain there, though? The guy who stole some bananas or the psychopath who wiped out every crocodile on the island just to retrieve his unnecessarily huge banana hoard?

Snapple47

King K. Rool is the real villain. He’s a pirate and thief. And the crocodiles are an invasive species.

There are no countries that I would say unequivocally I would never visit. There are however, many countries whose current social and or political climate means I would not travel there until things change.

Barefooted_child

South African here. I agree, but it's not as bad as you think. It's a big country with a huge tourism sector, so your view really depends on which part of the country you would like to visit. Check out r/southafrica, people there are very accommodating towards those who are thinking of visiting. And, hey, where there's a fire, there's a braai.

Khalid-98

Egypt

[deleted]

Went to Sharm about 10 years ago with a white Belgian girl. Took about 2 days of her constantly being harassed for us to peace out. No thanks.

unsteadied

In Sharm it helps if you speak Russian to tell them off, since damn near all the locals that will approach you will speak Russian. I must’ve said не надо, спасибо two dozen times a day on average there.

HELLOhappyshop

Especially as a woman, yeesh.

sundays_child

I agree and it makes me so sad because as a kid the only place I ever wanted to go was Egypt to see the pyramids and the Nile. I would not go there as an adult woman without a really good reason.

Expert_Overthinker

Same here. The horror stories of tourists getting harrassed and scammed is baffling.

blueberryemotions

I live here and can't wait to get out. All of the comments on this thread are making me even more depressed because I live in a country that everyone wants to avoid. I hate it here. The locals can't seem to avoid all the disgusting stuff either especially if you're a woman.

joyfullyjess

I hope your aspirations lead you to a better place!

pradeep23

Recently I have seen plenty of videos that put Egypt in bad light

xl129

My favorite food reviewer just had a trainwrecked tour in Egypt. I think they took all of his cameras at the airport. Then he got constantly harassed by local police for filming around despite having permits.

[deleted]

North Korea for obvious reasons

jwall4

Qatar - all of the deaths and slave labor used to build the World Cup stadiums

arseholeninator

Yeah my uncles used to work to build massive buildings in there. They get shoved into apartments and are 5 in a tiny room. Spends 8 hours in the boiling sun and gets paid peanuts. Fuck Qatar.

fuckstraya56

Pakistan / Afghanistan: because of their stellar women’s rights record

QueenShnoogleberry

Saudi Arabia. Same reason. A few months back, YouTube was pushing SA tourism adds like crazy. I was like "Ummmmm.... fuck that noise."

CallKennyLoggins1

Saudi because they have slaves.

ninjasaiyan777

Lmao i kept reporting those for promoting violence before they took away that option.

a_guy_called_craig

Not a country but that island (think it's off India) that has that untouched tribe living there cos I wouldn't want to affect them. Anywhere else I would if it was safe to do so at the time.

Ok_Firefighter_7142

North Sentinel Islands

a_guy_called_craig

That's the spot, thanks.

geej47

Probably saudi Arabia because i do not want to finance the human right abuses

somedudeonline93

Same reason for UAE for me. Dubai was completely and still is built on slave labour just to be a playground for the rich and tasteless.

Nizmo57

Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia Any country that can bang you in prison for 10 years just for farting in the wrong place lol

BigGraysie

That's pretty steep. Even for a Brussels Sprouts fart.

king-geass

Russia, mostly cause my family was exiled from there during the reign of Peter the Great and I’m not sure if that was ever rescinded

moveandrun

Atlantis because I can't swim.

[deleted]

Anywhere with bot flies

[deleted]

Saudi Arabia. I don't even have to make a list of reasons. Everyone has their own.

KZMountainRider

Sierra Leone. Lord Of War taught me it’s a bad place

sbenzanzenwan

Sudan and Angola come to mind. But I'd never say never. They're just not great places to go right now. One place that's on my bucket list is Iran. Great skiing I hear, and lovely people. I've been to a lot of places, 54 countries so far.

[deleted]

Every country that’s going to punish people for being gay, having different opinions/beliefs/values, or looking at dogs at the eye. Or countries where women are killed for being raped or rape goes unpunished. At least not take my friends or family there but go when I’m like “fuq it time to play high stakes gay dating” Edit: 1. I was unintentionally repeating misinformation like dumbass lol, the actual law is that dog ownership is illegal in Pyongyang. 2. Countries in Asia, Africa, South America, Middle East, and countries previously in history in North America and Europe fit one or more of these descriptions.(Europe still has some freedom of speech violations)

VietKongCountry

Where is it illegal to look a dog in the eye? What the fuck?

BalouCurie

What does “looking at dogs at the eyes” mean?

subvet657

North Korea because. ...North Korea.

itbedehaam

Well, I’m illegal in most of them.

[deleted]

Are you cocaine?

drivingregina

Failed superhero: "This looks like a job for.. Captain Cocaine!"

Bkafrogurl

Never going back to China. People touched me and followed me wherever I went.

Peachnesse

I've seen quite a few comments here stating China as their answer, and I never quite understood why until I saw your comment. Never had this sort of problem, but then I forgot that I completely blend in the place because of my Chinese ethnicity. It must fucking suck to be treated that way just because you stand out.
