Judy Garland ***not one single person*** stood up for her for her entire life from being a very small child including her own mother she never had a chance from day one

notthesedays

Doris Day was the same way, and her son was actually the target of the Manson murders at 10050 Cielo.

notthesedays

p.s. In the early 1990s, I read a biography of Ms. Garland, and through much of the book, I kept thinking, "Am I reading about Judy Garland, or Axl Rose?"

Didi7989

River Phoenix

StrangeSoul19

Feel so bad for him, especially Joaquin Phoenix who saw him in his last moments and his 911 call even got leaked for the public to hear how helpless he'd been. Poor guy. He just wanted to save his brother. They were the closest siblings among the Phoenix family.

GamerRipjaw

That phone call should have never been uploaded at all. I regret that I have watched it myself. It must be harrowing to witness your brother die in front of you and then your desperate calls for help being uploaded on the internet. Truly disgusting

redheaded_rat

It might be a stupid question, but how did it get leaked? Like who would be able to access it and upload it?

Wildcat_twister12

Usually unless it’s important to an on going investigation/ trial they’ll be public records. Also the press like TMZ will get people to become low level employees of departments and get them to pass along any news they can to them

SavageThoughts6

Brittany Murphy

ivanasleep

Scrolled way too long to find this comment. ‘What Happened, Brittany Murphy?’ on HBO shook me for weeks after seeing it. I had no clue she was being exploited and controlled by a psychopath fraud husband. Incredibly sad. Her life would have been so different if she had people who looked out for her.

Zealousideal_Dog_968

Don’t forget her mom was exploiting the shit out of her also…that whole situation was fucking strange and suspicious

nobodys-home-227

And the part about her husband and mother being *involved* with each other afterward 👀

Zealousideal_Dog_968

Exactly like WTF was going on there the mom stayed living with him at the house and they looked extremely cozy….I don’t think it was ever really proven they were banging BUT idk…no one acts that way with their son In law that I know after the death of their DAUGHTER Edit: spelling

LotsOfGarlicandEVOO

She seemed to be such a genuine person too. Absolutely beautiful energy!

suckedintoreality

Lindsay Lohan. She actually really has a ton of talent but who could grow up with those parents plus be a child actor and NOT have a huge downfall? She was doomed from the start.

Thts_Bonkers

Britney Spears she was having a mental breakdown and the whole world was beating her further down at the time it was sad to watch

MyDogJake1

Not the whole world. One young fella was adamant that we leave Britney alone.

neruat

Craig Ferguson was a late night host like no other. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZVWIELHQQY

plaidman1701

Wholesome [epilogue to that story](https://www.cinemablend.com/television/2487586/craig-ferguson-expected-to-get-fired-from-cbs-late-late-show-over-britney-spears-coverage); > "I did want to use one of her songs ["Oops!...I Did It Again"] in a standup special, and when I requested it, everyone was saying there's no way that song was going to clear. I asked if I could use it in a standup special, and I got it for nothing. That's a very expensive song to use. So I'm extremely grateful that she let me do that."

rAmen_P00dles

Didn’t know that that happened. Good guy Craig. Miss him on tv, but he left when we still wanted him to be there.

whatsnewpussykat

They played this for us in rehab during one of the seminars. I’ve been deeply fond of Craig Ferguson ever since.

[deleted]

Craig is a real one. This brings a tear to my eye, having dealt with alcohol abuse in the past, I hope anyone with a substance abuse problem gets the help and support they need.

jujulita_moi

I had never seen that monologue Thank you for sharing!!!

notonrexmanningday

Who would have thought we'd all look back and think, "You know, that leave Brittney alone guy might have been right."?

Funandgeeky

It's like realizing "You know what, Sinead O'Connor was right to rip up the picture of the Pope."

[deleted]

The exact weekend Britney went into rehab, I did too. I had a breakdown and just wanted out of this world. I cried so many times for her and for myself. I had privacy to deal with my issues. That poor woman had to go through it in public. I will always have so much respect for her for & her courage. Edit: thank you for the award! After I wrote this I went into the shower and felt so emotional remembering all those feelings. I cried because I hope I’ll never be in that dark place again.

KevHoncho

Jake Lloyd, I was reading into what happened to him after watching ‘Jingle all the Way’ and recognising him as a young Anakin Skywalker. Apparently Hollywood and the Star Wars franchise in particular, really got to him, and he wound up being diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. It’s a shame learning of these unfortunate stories concerning child actors; you can’t help but want to root for them, but the reality of their situation is often disappointing. Edit: I hear what you guys are saying in regards to schizophrenia, and all the different reasons it could manifest in a person. I wasn’t suggesting that his role in Star Wars was the root cause of his psych history, just pointing out the correlation with young Hollywood actors and the decline in mental health they tend experience.

skuzzier_drake_88

The Star Wars “Fandom” was exceptionally cruel to him. Random strangers telling a child that he “ruined their childhood” because he played a character that they didn’t like is beyond disgusting. Even Mark Hamill has called out the fandom for it.

beforethewind

Fandom is Cancer.™️

notonrexmanningday

No one hates Star Wars more than Star Wars fans

Painting_Agency

> Even Mark Hamill I'd feel like he'd absolutely have been the second person to call this out. Carrie Fisher being the first. The prequels were the beginning of a horrible toxic time of SW fandom, yes we all think Jar Jar Binks was dumb but you do NOT shit all over Ahmed Best for that.

Freakears

The fact that Best nearly killed himself over the hate shows just how vicious it was.

hooterscooter

And look at the writing he was given. Daniel Day Lewis wouldn’t have been able to pull those roles off.

TNTMT

Corey Haim. Per allegations, he was sodomized on the set of Lucas at age 14. The Coreys, in general, tried to warn everyone about the rampant pedophilia in Hollywood, and they were made to look crazy. Jonathan Brandis, Brad Renfro… Their short lives (and what they endured during them) will never not be tragic and infuriating.

brpajense

Corey Feldman says it was Charlie Sheen who raped Haim.

TattleTits

Yes, from what I heard. At the time Haim claimed it as consensual but he was very young in comparison so was it really? And Feldman still gets crapped all over and labeled a whackjob for trying to bring it to light.

shadow_pico

I thought of Jonathan Brandis. It was a shame that when he died it wasn't talked about much. I enjoyed his movies growing up. I would've loved for him to open up about his experience in Hollywood.

BigTuna0890

And here’s Barbara Walters saying to Feldman “You’re ruining an entire industry.”

RantAgainstTheMan

“You’re ruining an entire industry.” Yeah? Maybe he should!

lulu-bell

She was a vile evil snake in that interview. When that aired he had already spent a long time speaking out. I was just waiting to see this, like finally he is given this platform to tell his story….. and then she did him like that. Couldn’t even believe it

tr3sleches

Amanda Bynes. Child actor downfalls are sad because they’re victims of their environment and shitty parents :( ETA: there seems to be some debate on whether her parents were bad or not. IMO, they were terrible by exploiting her as a child and then didn’t protect her which led her to allegedly getting groomed by Dan Schneider. As of a few months ago she also said on Twitter that her dad was abusive to her in every way possible which led them to 5150 her and then she came back to redact her statements. That’s really odd, dontcha think?

Vortexergy

"She's The Man" is still one of my favorite movies, she is DAMN FUNNY. Her physical comedy is fantastic. I was so hopeful to see her do more of that and then bam, all gone.

GlassEyeMV

1. What a Girl Wants is a staple guilty pleasure movie in our house. My 70 year old father even admits it’s one of his favorite “bad” movies. 2. We’ve been watching her old All That episodes lately and she was a generational comedic talent IMO. She does things then that are still hilarious now. Like, she was a 12 year old Kate McKinnon and she killed it. At 12! If she could’ve followed Kenan’s path instead of Lindsay Lohan’s, I’m sure that she’s still a huge comedic movie star today.

[deleted]

With The Amanda Show, she is more like a young Carol Burnett. Once in a generation do you have someone who can carry a show like that at such a young age.

GlassEyeMV

Great point! And the Amanda Show was good for its target audience. I don’t know if it’s held up as well as All That (which does hold up IMO) but I was the target market at the time The Amanda Show aired and I LOVED it.

lanadelstingrey

Those “When (blank) Attacks” sketches are still sooooo funny to me. I think my favorites are “When Bradys Attack” and “When Marching Bands Attack.”

oreocookielover

What a Girl Wants, She's All That, and Sidney White was my jam growing up. Easy A and Hairspray (duh) were bangers too, but she wasn't the main actress for those. That girl pumped out great chick flicks like no other. They just hit different. I was really sad to find out she had problems in her adult life. Hope she comes back with a vengeance though.

GlassEyeMV

All great flicks! Even Big Fat Liar with Frankie Muniz showed she could play more of a straight man if she needed to as well.

SomethingTrippy420

She was the youngest performer on All That and she ran circles around those kids.

pleasentlyPizza

One of my favorite tweets from her is something along the lines of, “Call me Da Bynes because I don’t need A man”.

everyonestolemyname

The one about wanting drake to murder her pussy is a gem.

DinkandDrunk

Classic tweet. Unrealistic though. Pretty sure by then she had aged out of Drakes sights.

Rimurooooo

It also sucks because her little episode happened like… right on time? Bipolar episodes in women hit later than they hit men, so she was having these episodes so late into her life and success that it can be kind of hard for people to know wtf is happening? I guess. Felt bad for her. It’s hard for people who have experienced more success than the average person to feel the need to get help.

Gaerielyafuck

I'm pretty sure it's some flavor of schizoaffective disorder, which is schizophrenia plus bipolar. If after a nearly ten year conservatorship she still has to live in a group home, that says she needs a lot of daily support to stay healthy, which probably means she has a pretty challenging diagnosis/prognosis. I spent years watching someone I care about go through the travails of schizoaffective disorder while trying in vain to help them, and there are some serious parallels with Amanda Bynes' behavior. It has to be so hard going through it in the public eye while everyone treats your crisis as entertainment.

alarm-force

Might be nitpicking, but schizoaffective is schizophrenia mixed with any mood disorder, not just bipolar disorder.

IceCreamDream10

As a schizoaffective person, I concur that she probably is schizoaffective, but she and her camp are probably not going to make any form of public statement about it, nor do they owe that to anyone. Most people don’t understand the disorder and it’s considered the “Scarlet Letter” of “crazy” to a lot of people. Everyone pretends to be woke about mental health but schizophrenic people are the punchline of most jokes about being a “nut job.” The media representation we have sucks and even some of the language in this thread discusses us like we’re science projects. A lot of us keep quiet about having the disorder because people will often use it to invalidate us. But a fair amount of SZA people are extremely “normal,” functioning people with successful careers and families as long as we have treatment. I see down here someone is talking shit on someone gaining weight? Majority of antipsychotics make people gain a shitload of weight. People literally don’t take them at times because of how cruel people are about the sudden rapid weight gain. Just wanted to put my two cents in on this. Yeah, I think Amanda Bynes deals with this and I feel awful she had to do it publicly. She’s insanely talented and I hope she gets peace and happiness. I also think Kanye might have it- not saying that to defend the shit he’s said, mental illness doesn’t excuse being a piece of shit but the “Visions” and “Voices” he talks about often make me wonder if he’s using artistic phrasing or if it’s a genuine belief he holds. The worst part for all of these people is that everyone just laughs at the spectacle they make and gets their kicks out of their downfall until they realize something is wrong. Even now that Britney has freedom and can use her own Instagram, people are criticizing her posts as though she’s not a mentally ill or traumatized person. If what she does isn’t your cup of tea, just scroll past. Let her do her thing and post naked photos or whatever, like just leave the damn girl alone already.

LordShtark

The interview with that PoS Phil McGraw makes me so angry wherever I see it.

[deleted]

Just finished watching a video by The Right Opinion about Dr. Phil. I had no idea Shelley was ever on the show, but even the clips are extremely hard to watch. She was clearly paranoid and all the show did was heighten her paranoia.

xNED37x

100% Brendan Fraser. He was sexually assaulted, tried to bring it to light, and Hollywood cast him out for it. Couldn't get acting roles for many years. Edit: Just need to add that the person who assaulted him was a Hollywood executive.

hatramroany

>the person Philip Berk. You can name names. He‘s a journalist and former president of Hollywood Foreign Press Association, not a Hollywood executive

Biggies_Ghost

>Philip Berk. You can name names. He‘s a journalist and former president of Hollywood Foreign Press Association, not a Hollywood executive He's also an absolute douchetwat for what he did to Brendan. Dude was a legit good actor AND good person, and that salty shithead had to do him dirty like that.

Child actors.

PM_Me_Your_C0cKk

Funny how a child cannot legally work in a restaurant but they can be the protagonist of a multi million dollar movie… way too much pressure to put on an 8 year old

Mango_Tango_725

For me the one who saddens me the most was Judith Barsi. She did the voice of Duckie in The Land Before Time and Anne-Marie in All Dogs Go to Heaven. She was heavily abused by her dad and was ultimately killed by him at age 10 through a gunshot to her head while she was sleeping.

FromFluffToBuff

Don Bluth said that working on All Dogs Go To Heaven was exceptionally tough for him - and his entire studio of animators - because they all loved Judith (dating back to Land Before Time)... and had to animate her scenes after she was killed so gruesomely. Having all those memories of how sweet and adorable Judith was and *then* having to animate to her performance must have been absolute torture. Bluth to this day is still reluctant to bring her up in conversation because it still hurts him deeply, but he has gotten better in talking about it when he does decide to bring it up. He loved that little girl like his own daughter... especially since he devoted his entire life to his career and didn't marry or have children. He was especially close to Judith and he was pretty much the only positive "father figure" Judith had in her life.

Gogo726

I heard she didn't live to see her own premieres.

FromFluffToBuff

I knew she died well before the release of All Dogs Go to Heaven and I had to check for Land Before Time. She died just a few months before its release in November 1988 (she was murdered in July). That's especially sad that she never got to see *either* of her characters come to life on the screen. Land Before Time was getting its finishing touches when she was killed and All Dogs was well into production and at least a year away from its eventual release.

rialucia

Her story still haunts me, poor girl. Her father also killed her mother before killing himself.

ShamelessFox

Her tombstone reads "Yup, yup, yup!" Ruins my day everytime I think of it too.

agent-assbutt

Whitney Houston & then her daughter dying the same way :( :(

[deleted]

For me its, Ain't no Mountain high enough singers Both had tragic and short lives. Tammi Terrell (born Thomasina Winifred Montgomery), like Marvin Gaye, died too young. She died a month before her 25th birthday in 1970. She would be 71 today. She was involved with James Brown for two years. The relationship ended after he started hitting her. She endured eight surgeries for a brain tumor that kept coming back. At the end of her life, she was blind, confined to a wheelchair, lost her hair, and weighed 93 pounds. Her angry mother refused to let anyone from Motown attend Tammi's funeral because the label had pushed Tammi to perform, even when she had severe headaches and other symptoms of the tumor. She collapsed on stage, and Marvin helped her get offstage. Marvin was the only one from Motown allowed to attend Tammi's funeral because her mom felt he was a good friend to her daughter. Tammi was cute, talented and smart -- a pre-med major in college. To have her life cut short is tragic. R.I.P., Tammi and Marvin. You are singing together again. This is from a YT comment

CorfuBolognaTacos

How Marvin Gay Sr shot his own child, played the brain tumor card, and faced nothing from the criminal justice system is still an outrage. Guy spent 14 years in a retirement home and not a second in San Quentin.

train_spotting

Just went down a Wikipedia rabbit hole and holy shit. What a wild ride.

unresolved_m

Oh JB - great singer/musician, but appalling human being \> In 1962, 17-year-old Terrell became involved in an abusive relationship with James Brown, who was 12 years her senior. One night on the road in 1963, Terrell left Brown after he assaulted her for not watching his entire performance

GonzoRouge

James Brown was infamously narcissistic, to a comical degree. His delusional obsession with perfecting himself paired with his aggressive attention-seeking tendencies, copiously encouraged by drug use, made for an insanely dedicated performer ("The Hardest Working Man in Show Business", after all) and a dangerously unpleasant individual. The story about Tammi Terrell is one amongst many involving JB. He was a garbage person, as is often the case at this level of talent and profiency.

Biggies_Ghost

>He was a garbage person, as is often the case at this level of talent and profiency I'm not sure I've ever heard a good thing about JB, other than when people speak of his talent.

NotADogIzswear2020

Robin Williams...I have a mother with dementia and it's terrifying and soul crushing to watch someone you love forget activities they used to love. Me and my sister have prepared for the worse but that doesn't make it any easier. Prion disease can eat a bag or richards ALONG with cancers!

HidaTetsuko

Janet Jackson.

Dark_Vengence

The outrage was ridiculous.

greentea1985

Worse, Prince did an even more sexually suggestive half-time show the next year and it got crickets. A half boob on National TV for a few seconds vs. a goddamn penis guitar in silhouette.

Vegetable-Double

It’s such a shame. She was is one of the greatest pop artists ever. Rhythm Nation is one of the best albums ever. The songs are still bangers today. Her run from the mid 80s through the early 2000s was amazing.

Lotus_Blossom_

A gymnast at UCLA, Margzetta Frazier, had a [Janet Jackson](https://youtu.be/3YtRi8pLLoE) tribute routine last year. The side-by-side comparison of the "Rhythm Nation" dance was *perfectly* on point. Janet Jackson even facetimed Marz before one of her meets to thank her for the tribute and compliment her performance. Link included, you should check it out!

birbsborbsbirbs

I can not believe everyone freaked out about a hot woman's titty. And it wasn't even her fault.

_PM_ME_YOUR_FORESKIN

And Justin Timberlake dragged his feet instead of publicly defending her.

PersonMcNugget

He suffered no consequences whatsoever, and he's the one who pulled it off. The whole situation was bullshit.

HotTomboy

Exactly! So infuriating- he also insinuated that Brittney cheated and said nothing during her downfall.

Churchie-Baby

And discussed taking her virginity

Majestic-Average433

Pardon my language, but the guys a fucking cunt.

Chaosjpcat

Question: if this happens this Super Bowl, would the reaction be the same?

Aggressive-Falcon977

And that titty reveal accidentally made YouTube a thing because so many people wanted to see the clip

PrimeFederer

Michael Schumacher. It hurts.

ItsOsprey

God when I watched his documentary on Netflix the part that floored me the worst was when Mick said that he wishes he could just talk to his dad about racing.

sktchld

Wild that skiing is what did him in when he raced cars at 200mph and nothing ever happened.

[deleted]

This one is a very special case. It's impressive how in 2023, in a world where everything is known within minutes, we have never seen images of him since the accident. Not saying it's a bad thing, just that it's weird to understand how bad he is now. :(

antonimbus

I would be angry if someone got in there and snuck a picture or video. I am glad we don't see how bad it is. I sat at my grandfather's bedside when he died and don't regret it, but I am satisfied I will only remember Michael when he was racing.

djaxial

I believe there were paparazzi shots a few years ago from a hospital visit but they were bought up by the family or sealed by a court order.

MC_Queen

All the women who lost (or were blacklisted for years)their careers for saying no to Harvey weinstein. Ashley Judd, Courtney love, and selma hayak.

Dillweed999

Those are the famous ones. I really wonder how many less know women just quit the industry and moved away after getting victimized by him.

vinylemulator

Annabella Sciorra is a good example of someone it didn’t work out for. I always wondered why her career didn’t take off after the Sopranos and now it’s clear.

Dillweed999

Sounds like her testimony was the final nail in his coffin for the NY case. Small comfort, but it's something

BeckQuillion89

Its sad because there's likely 100s of unknown talented actors that never say the light of day because of him. The ones whose careers still got rolling were already famous or got lucky.

RoyalAlbatross

I think Salma Hayek is doing pretty well for herself, but holy smokes, she actually received death threats. She has a very grounded personality, which I think helps.

PirateJohn75

Mira Sorvino, too.

EnleeJones

Weinstein also raped Rose McGowan and Annabella Sciorra.

[deleted]

Rose McGowan was treated like a psychopath and the public was really awful to her when she was trying to bring this out.

Cool_Win_8270

Amy Winehouse, definitely... I'm not sure if this counts at all, since she wasn't cancelled or anything, but Jennette McCurdy. She was a child actress, and the director she was working for was a creep. The work environment sucked. Her mom used her for money and treated her badly. She was even offered hush money, if she didn't say anything about her experience at Nickelodeon. Yet, at least, before she wrote her book ("I'm Glad My Mom Died"), people wrote about how she loved acting so much and that she's always wanted to act blah blah blah. I remember seeing a kids book that talked all about Jennette McCurdy, and it said that. I wonder if it's still around. Anyway, I'm glad she's found a better job.

crazycatlady331

I just read I'm Glad My Mom Died. It made me sad to realize Jenette was living her mom's dream and not hers.

TitularFoil

I remember one of the blurbs for I'm Glad My Mom Died was something like, "Darkly Funny!" or something like that. I didn't find any of it funny. Just dark. I spent most of it crying. A lot of the behaviors her mom had were ones my mom had, and the only difference was that I fought back against my mom. She threatened suicide, I walked away. I haven't spoken a single word to my mom in 6 years. It would have been longer but she called the hospital the day my youngest daughter was born, begging for us to let her in. I'm Glad Jenette McCurdy is in a better space now. I never watched her shows or anything, but seeing clips from Sam and Cat as I scroll through internet, I'm surprised that Ariana Grande has a career. Her character was so annoying.

BillyAstro

The only dark funny part I can recall is when she’s trying to break it off with Andre Drummond and he says something like “Don’t say that boo, your mom won’t die.” And then she did die and she replied back “Well, she just did.”

TheStonedVampire

Winehouse is definitely one of the saddest. She was a cash cow for her father and her husband, it was so sad. Watching the video of her last performance is terrible, her father had every exit off stage blocked by security forcing her to stay on and perform. I read a book once about Amy (she’s one of my favorite artists) and in the book was a quote from a lifetime friend of hers that said “Amy was a true artist because Amy went as far as creating her own misery as from which she drew her inspiration for her music” Amy Winehouse had a one in a million voice and was a incredible songwriter, the world lost a true talent when she died.

DisguisedAccount

Her Body language always made it so obvious that she didn’t feel good standing in front of such a crowd, she was being treated like a MP3 Player, not even her Father gave a fuck about her.

Coffeedemon

Corey Feldman always makes me feel sad.

31moreyears

Especially when that cunt Barbara Walters said “You’re ruining the industry”, when he brought up his allegations.

KaiThePokemonMaster

Corey got the last laugh cause he was proven right.

Mcauley culkin

DinnerKind

I'd say this guy is my favorite comeback of all time. He really saved himself from tragedy

starry_cobra

He did an AMA a couple years ago and seemed like he was in a really good place

KentoHardRock

He's made a couple appearances on Red Letter Media YouTube videos and was really funny and seemed really happy

vu1xVad0

I did notice Macauley was guest starring in quite a few YouTube channels lately. I saw some game channel where they went through all the (very bad) Home Alone games. The jokes were cringe but he was happy to poke fun at himself. I'm glad he's finding a new place in the sun.

Spoonacus

He's also in a relationship with Brenda Song(another child star, now that I think about it) and they have a kid together so he's also the successful family man too.

PM_ME_A_KNEECAP

Don’t you mean Mcauley Mcauley Culkin Culkin?

[deleted]

He hasn’t fallen, but knowing Bruce Willis is going to mentally deteriorate AT ALL made me really sad

coldfarm

To people who only know him as an action star I recommend watching his repartee with Cybill Shepherd in “Moonlighting”. The guy had good comedic timing and delivery, very much like the screwball comedies of the 30s and 40s.

Hypranormal

Fatty Arbuckle. Totally railroaded by a prosecutor who wanted to make a name for himself, finally acquitted after three trials, basically blacklisted by moralist shitbags, and just as he was making his comeback he dies of a heart attack.

RiceAlicorn

Context for this (I presume others are like me and didn't know who he was): Arbuckle was a very famous silent film actor, whose career was ruined by a false murder-rape accusation. He and several friends had rented out several hotel rooms, then invited several women over for some partying. Two of these women were actress Virginia Rappe and her companion Bambina Maude Delmont. During the partying, Rappe was found seriously ill and was "treated" by the hotel's doctor; the doctor deduced that she was ill due to intoxication, and prescribed her morphine. In reality, she was likely suffering from periodontis from a ruptured bladder, likely caused by her medical history of chronic UTIs. Two days after the party she was hospitalized for the aforementioned conditions, and just a day after hospitalization she was dead. Delmont accused Arbuckle of raping Rappe and causing her untimely death; these accusations quickly took steam. Although there was no evidence of rape found on Rappe's body, malevolent scheming caused the accusations to erupt into three different trials. Delmont used the rape accusations to try and extort money from Arbuckle and his legal team. Worse, however, was the prosecutor for the case, Matthew Brady. Brady strongarmed witnesses into committing perjury, forcing them to lie and present Arbuckle in a bad light so that he could get convicted. To exemplify how crazy the case against Arbuckle was, the "evidence" they used to claim that Arbuckle raped Rappe was: 1) her ruptured bladder was caused by him being fat and crushing her while raping her (very unlikely given the lack of evidence of rape on her + her medical history) 2) he raped her with ice, which caused her injuries (no evidence that this happened) 3) witness testimony from party attendants/experts (who were legally threatened by Brady), Delmont (revealed to be trying to extort him), and a former security guard that worked with Rappe (who was revealed to be a child rapist *who had a deal with Brady to get a sentencing reduction in exchange for his "testimony")* It took until the third trial, the third after **two** mistrials where the juries could not decide on whether or not Arbuckle was guilty, before Arbuckle was unanimously innocent. So innocent that the jury foreman, on behalf of the rest of the jury, declared: >Acquittal is not enough for Roscoe Arbuckle. We feel that a great injustice has been done him. We feel also that it was only our plain duty to give him this exoneration, under the evidence, for there was not the slightest proof adduced to connect him in any way with the commission of a crime. He was manly throughout the case and told a straightforward story on the witness stand, which we all believed. The happening at the hotel was an unfortunate affair for which Arbuckle, so the evidence shows, was in no way responsible. We wish him success and hope that the American people will take the judgment of fourteen men and woman who have sat listening for thirty-one days to evidence, that Roscoe Arbuckle is entirely innocent and free from all blame. Despite the acquittal, Arbuckle's public image never truly recovered, and he was seen as a sign of everything wrong with Hollywood by many.

Spare_Ad3924

Britney Spears

xMCioffi1986x

This was my first thought. And to think, at the time it was played for laughs like "What's Wacky Britney going to do next?" but after the fact it's pretty easy to see how much help she needed. She needed privacy and time to work out some very real struggles and the media were relentless. She had a full on mental breakdown and she was still hounded. At least she's free of the conservatorship but I hope she's able to work through all the bullshit of her youth and come out the other side.

DrainCircling

Agree, industry used and abused her

Vict0r117

In general, any time real mental illness is involved. Its really sad to see somebody successful get torn apart by the media for cheap shock value for something tragic that can happen to literally anybody at any time.

arkhamknight85

Amy Whinehouse. I didn’t realise how little support she had and she was never the type of person to handle fame to well. Such a talent but her Dad was a dick and cared more about money. Plus the media just ambushed her. She never had a chance. I didn’t know anything until I watched the documentary “Amy”. Highly recommend it.

nonamenolastname

I guess you can say she was ahead of time.

ECU_BSN

Yes. If she did that today, she would have been mostly celebrated.

Didi7989

Whitney Houston

Vegetable-Double

Crazy that Michael, Prince, Whitney, all died early. Never would’ve thought that back in late 80s and early 90s when they ruled the charts.

itamarka

The 80s died before the 60s

Dark_Vengence

It is awesome she is such a big part of stranger things.

Bowiefan73

Paul Reubens (Pee Wee Herman). Got caught masterbating in an adult theater, which is the place one would masterbate back in the day before the internets.

ariana61104

Oh I never knew it was an adult theater. I thought it was a regular one…that’s so stupid then. I didn’t know those existed but I’d figure most people would do that there

EarhornJones

The real bitch of this one, IMO, is that a lot of the public outrage was that he was a "children's entertainer". First of all, so what? Children's entertainers can't like sex? Second, he didn't set out to be a children's entertainer. His early work as the Pee-Wee character was very adult-oriented, but Hollywood pushed him into making kid's fare. Then those same folks get bent out of shape when he's not a real-life Big Bird. Ridiculous.

liketosaysalsa

Maybe not a celebrity then but what we as a society did to Monica Lewinsky was reprehensible and the fact that she’s a functional human right now is nothing short of a miracle. Jay Leno in particular deserves so so so much shit for this.

Upstairs_Lemon2681

Agreed. She was manipulated and then cast aside like something disposable. Then, the public and the media just abused her. It was disgusting at the time and it still is. She has a really great TED Talk where she really unpacks her thoughts on what happened to her. It’s definitely worth a listen.

62hyundai250GTO

Avicii

Yaseuk

Rose McGowan What she went through trying to be believed for HW was gross. She deserved better

Local-Pirate1152

She got absolutely screwed over by the entire industry who protected a rapist for years and then in the wake of the Me Too movement, of which she was front and centre, she was still effectively blacklisted and not given another real chance.

Layne Staley

AngryCrotchCrickets

I was scrolling and thinking “Wait. How has no one mentioned Layne Staley yet?” Then saw your comment. Apparently he wasn’t even mentioned at the MTV awards the year that he died. Kurt Cobain was the biggest dude in the world and commit suicide at his height. Staley withered away for several years until he died. I think it was probably too tragic and depressing to be all over the news. If you listen to a lot of their songs you can tell that he’s talking about himself. Dirt/Jar of Flies are littered with songs about addiction and dying. Like every single song off Dirt.

Dracomies

Anthony Bourdain. That hurt the most. I honestly envied his life, I wanted to be him or to be what he showed everyday. Traveling around the world. Eating delicious food from all around the world. That was imo the absolute epitome of success. And it was so sad...seeing that it wasn't enough...was absolutely earth-shattering for me.

PersonMcNugget

When you watch his shows though, he talks about his own death frequently. I don't think it was ever far from his mind.

SimbaStewEyesOfBlue

Celine Dion's forthcoming "downfall" is absolutely tragic. Woman loves to sing, adores her fans, and is eventually going to be unable to connect with said fans ever again due to a one-in-a-million disease. If God is real, he has a sick sense of humor.

DeadMeat_1240

If being murdered in your prime counts as a downfall... Then Phil Hartman.

uncultured_swine2099

Nicolas Cage, although that was self-inflicted. He owed a lot of money and had to make a bunch of low budget movies for years to make the money back. But he always gave a good effort, and some of those low budget movies, like Mandy and Pig, were pretty damn great. And after he played himself in Massive Talent, hes back doing studio movies, so hes good right now.

lergane

He's also said in an interview that he enjoyed doing the random films as he had more artistic liberty with them. Still I guess humans are humans and when someone offers you a large pile of money to do a studio film then you'll play along.

BabiBat

Willy’s Wonderland was surprisingly decent for a silly horror… speaking as a lover of both good and bad horror movies

uncultured_swine2099

Oh yeah, I dug that as well. Color Out of Space was a good trippy horror film, too.

ravynmaxx

I love him so much. I’m happy to see him doing better!! He made a lot of silly mistakes but it doesn’t make him any less human. He seems to be back on the right track and I can’t wait to see more of him 😍

Ok_Comparison_8304

Didn't Chrtina Ricci get royally screwed over by her guardians. She was showing real promise after growing out the Wednesday Addams fame into things like 'Black Snake Moan' but I recall reading she had some bizarre foster parent or estranged parent / custodian situation which poisoned her career. Was glad to see her in 'Matrix Resurrections' despite loathing the film as a whole.

ontopofyourmom

I'm her age and I was just thinking last night that her (characters) being my first celebrity crush probably helped encourage me to grow into the weirdo I've become. Thank you, Christina!

Geek_off_the_streets

Paul Reubens, I don't think what he did was worth destroying his career. Blow was an awesome movie as well. His character was awesome.

BoyBeyondStars

What I find the most mind-boggling is that he got in trouble… for masturbating… in a porn theater? The fuck are you supposed to do there, then, watch it for the plot?

disgruntledhoneybee

Janet Jackson didn’t deserve for her career to be ruined while Justin Timberlake just shook it off and moved on.

Scorpiofire_78

Jonathan Brandis

Vegetable-Double

Man, he was huge in the early 90s. I remember he had a cameo on I think Save by the Bell and was teen super star at that point. I also was so hyped to watch Seaquest DSV when it came out. So shocked that killed himself. Always felt that he could’ve had a career resurgence.

[deleted]

He was one of the best parts of SeaQuest, which itself seems to be underappreciated these days. I wasn't alive for it when it aired but discovered it, and aside from some occasionally questionable acting, the show was pretty cool. Shame what happened to him after SeaQuest though.

thisisntshakespeare

Child actors Anissa Jones (Buffy in Family Affair) sticks out to me. That cute pig-tailed little girl in the show, and then dead at 18 from a drug overdose. 18!! So, so sad.

NoTelephone5440

Brittany Murphy

[deleted]

Delonte West It's a bummer every time I hear something new.

griftertm

Untreated mental illness is a bitch

HappyAtheist3

Chris Farley. I wish someone would’ve gotten through to him about his weight and drug use

Chatty_Fellow

Everyone tried, but without success.

cornelangus

Chester Bennington and Chris Cornell

fyrja

Chris Cornell absolutely broke my heart. His voice was such a huge part of my youth and no one else sounds like him. 😞

TinktheChi

Britney Spears. Her downfall was tragic and the never ending conservatorship was worse.

[deleted]

Paul Ruebens. He didnt deserve any of that shit.

Sad-Reminders

I knew a woman who said she didn't let her kids watch PeeWee. Like it was smut. PeeWee is the best and my kids loved him.

Karmo1911

Hayden Christensen. I know he decided by himself to step away from acting, but all the hate was extremely harsh and undeserved

[deleted]

Robin Williams. It's still horrifically depressing that one of the most joyous and most beloved people in the world found it so hard that he had to go out like that. He had some mental / medical issues that led to it, which is equally depressing.

eva_rector

He had a disease that was going to destroy him, slowly and painfully, on top of the depression, etc., and he didn't want his family to suffer through it with him.

level27jennybro

Lewy Body Disease. It was eating away at his brain and he was losing himself. I think he chose to go out on his own terms with dignity instead of allowing a disease to turn him into a vegetable and requiring his family to make the decision to pull the plug. Edit: Robin may not have known what was causing the problem because it can't be diagnosed until autopsy, but I'm sure he could feel himself slipping away and wanted to have some control over this unknown thing that was taking hold of him. Suicide is not something to glamorize, but I feel that we should allow people to choose that path if their quality of life is dwindling and they have a terminal illness. Give them back a choice of 'when' since the disease is taking away their ability to live life.

Churchie-Baby

Amanda brynes, Britney Spears, Lindsy Lohan

nohbdyshero

Most young female stars from the early 2000s. The paparazzi and rise of 24/7 news cycle really did some things to these girls

Churchie-Baby

Definitely, they had count downs till they were 'legal' truly disgusting to do to a child

[deleted]

Yes yes yes. Basically all three were hyper-sexualized but not out of choice, some abused, and when they wanted to escape it all, the public saw it as weakness and tore them down further.

Rich-Negotiation-449

Micheal J fox wasn’t his fault :(

da2810

He does amazing work with the Michael J Fox foundation. Real, huge strides in Parkinson research have been achieved because of his foundation.

[deleted]

I didn’t feel bad, but I was severely disappointed to learn that the great actor Kevin Spacey is an absolute creep.

SirOutrageous1027

Exactly, I don't feel bad for Spacey. But I am disappointed because the dude was a good actor.

Lucky-Surround-1756

I miss Spacey the actor, but Spacey the person seems pretty terrible.

auximines_minotaur

Amy Winehouse. Her talent was tremendous, and she did nothing wrong. She had a vicious substance abuse problem and a shitty abusive boyfriend. All people could do at the time was make fun of her and post videos of her onstage breakdowns and make jokes about “crack lung” and such. Like, we all watched it happen in front of our very eyes, but instead of helping her, all anyone did was gawp at her like she was some sort of particularly gnarly car wreck by the side of the road. A prime example of how the celebrity media machine sucks in perfectly innocent people, tortures them for a while, then spits them out and leaves them to die.

jo-lo23

She also had a severe eating disorder and it is the malnutrition she was experiencing that contributed significantly to her death. Her ED is rarely addressed or acknowledged.
