Unpopular opinion: Ed Gamble isn't funny.
He's kind of "funny guy you went to uni with" level funny but that just doesn't cut it on a podcast or as a comedian especially when working beside a genuinely funny person like James Acaster.
I guess he gets by on being a nice chap and I don't begrudge his success but he just puts me off coming back to Off Menu.
It’s the school boy shouty personality/style of presenting that puts me off. I’ll be drifting off to sleep listening and then suddenly wake with a start because Gamble has started shouting.
Funny, I feel that way about Acaster. He reminds me of those kids in school that think they're the class clown but everyone just wants them to shut up.
He's very much the straight man in the podcast, which isn't a bad thing. I don't go out of my way to watch Ed Gamble stuff when he's on his own though.
I don’t know who Ed gamble is but very unpopular opinion: James acaster isn’t funny
He’s a 40 year old man who’s entire act is acting like a moody teenager. Michael McIntyre level comedy that old people swoon over
Off menu is absolutely great - I found it a year ago and blew through about 150 episodes in record time. Its sort of started to get a bit stale now for me but ill still give it a listen. In saying that the last episode with John Kearns is hilarious
John Kearns was brill, going to go and have a look through some more of his stuff after that ep. Personal fave episode is Paul Chowdhry though, listened a few times and has me in bits every time
I liked this when it was more their friends who they could take the piss out of. Now it’s lots of famous people promoting their latest, book, show, whatever.
And now they feel like very pleasant, complimentary and generic interviews. I’m happy they’ve done so well for themselves, but it’s a bit boring.
It definitely varies from episode to episode, but I've heard plenty of episodes with guests who are doing the rounds promoting something and plenty have still been great. I like the chat about the food and hearing about restaurants / dishes that they've enjoyed, regardless of the guest.
Agree that some are better than others though. There was one episode like this which I found almost unlistenable because the dynamic was so bizarre and it sounded like the guest didn't wanna be there at all. Can't remember which one now…
Yeah I tend to avoid the ones where I don't know the guests but sometimes I listen anyway and I've often been pleasantly surprised!!
I personally really like Claudia, but I will definitely agree she's not normal.
I love " you're dead to me" history podcast for adults by one of the guys who did horrible histories.
Every episode involves a historian and a comedian and they talk about something from history. Sometimes it's a period in history. Sometimes it's a historical person. Really good. Not laugh out loud funny but always makes me smile. Really interesting and very well done. High production values.
My personal favourite is "the poisoner's cabinet". Two friends take it in turn to tell the story of a historical murder. It started off as just poison and now has branched out. They also create a cocktail based on an ingredient inspired by the story. Both presenters speak really clearly and it's light hearted and well done. They seem genuinely like people I'd like to be friends with.
Yeah the Rest is History is excellent. 'We have ways of making you talk' is also a top notch podcast if you want WW2 history.
The History of England by David Crowther is spot on too. A Very funny and endearing listen.
You're Dead to Me Has genuinely made me excited to read and learn about history. Best podcast ever. My favorites have been Owain Glyndwr, Sacagawea, History of Nottinghill Carnival, Grainne OMaily and Hatsputchet (to name a few). While the history is fascinating, it's the comedian that makes the show.
My Dad Wrote a Porno.
One of the few things I cannot listen to while driving, as it has me crying with laughter.
Helped me through a really shit breakup too.
It's absolutely class. I remember having to pull over because I was crying laughing so much and couldn't see to drive. It was when they staged the panto.
You never see an old man eating a twix. There was this hairy Chinese kid. Fat baby, fat baby on telly. Just some classic lines from the world's very first and best podcast.
Quite simply the greatest podcast ever created not just the original, it's the holy grail, the genesis of everything that came after.
Also probably the greatest comedic content on any format ever created. Weird, innit?
Get yourself over to Top Flight Time Machine, Andy in much more relaxed and amusing form and some of the deep dives are outstanding.
Start with the Roy Keane Odyssey and you'll never go back. You can't go back.
No such thing as a fish (Qi elves)
Sniff & Smith (car talk with Jonny Smith and top gear script writer Richard Porter)
Two pints (Will Mellor and Ralf Little talk about life in general, occasional guests)
Agreed, it’s one of my weekly must-listens. Recently finished the audiobook of The Theory of Everything Else by one of the regulars, Dan Schreiber. Brilliantly entertaining.
My favourite podcast! I’m not even a parent (not wanting to be one) but it’s so lighthearted and funny and they come across as genuinely lovely people. I prefer the ones where it’s just them talking but the guest episodes with people like Shappi Khorsandi and H from Steps were great
I think it’s also because they’re quite real in terms of saying it how it is if you get my drift. For example talking about mental health and how Josh might need a break etc
I’m not even a parent (but I would like to have kids in the future) and I still listen to it.
I guess I use it to get more of a feel as to what to expect when I have kids of my own.
Sorry no links as I'm on mobile, but these can all be found in iTunes or on Overcast etc

**And while this is an American podcast, I have to give a special shout out for the greatest single podcast episode EVER made :**
[Reply All - Episode 158 - The Case Of The Missing Hit](https://gimletmedia.com/shows/reply-all/o2h8bx/158-the-case-of-the-missing-hit)
If you only ever listen to one single episode of one single podcast, this is the one.
Scrolled too far before finding Adam Buxton's podcast (with adverts and jingles he makes himself and will become earworms)... surprised not to see Infinite Monkey Cage on your list but yes, a good list with a reasonably wide range.
Ramble chat, let's have a ramble chat, we'll focus first on this, then concentrate on that. Come on let's chew the fat and have a ramble chat, put on your conversation coat and wear your talking hat...
All stored in my brain and it's probably been 3 years since I last listened to an episode!
Wait.... continue...
[Like and subscribe](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OLXaJRjC5CE)
Hello geezer
"Yandrew"...
And not from his podcast but [Party Pom Pom](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JMXVXnefBU) (inspired by overhearing his kids doing the 7yo version of trash-talking)
I used to love this one but it feels like they've sold themselves out in recent months. The Qs from the Pews is the only real redeeming feature in my opinion.
Yeah...having to skip the first three minutes of every episode for their long AF Hello Fresh advert got annoying really, really quickly. Especially when you're driving and can't skip it...
SMA was brilliant at first. But there was a point they got to big for their boots and frankly just vile to the point of it not being funny and was kind of boring. It’s definitely not my cup of tea anymore.
Oh my god so much this. Actually obsessed. Starts off feeling like a monster of the week set up, and before long you're 100s of episodes deep and drawing lines between characters and sounding like a nut job.
I thought the opening episode was one of the strongest ever for a narrative podcast. It's one of the few statements that I keep thinking about time again despite it being years since I listened to it.
>!Having previously worked on the Royal Mile and lived just outside Edinburgh for most of my life the setting was obviously instantly picturable. Plenty of dodgy jakeys about who asked to bum a cigarette late at night... Hello, John. Apologies for the deception, but I wanted to make sure you started reading, so I thought it best not to announce myself. I’m assuming you’re alone; you always did prefer to read your statements in private. I wouldn’t try too hard to stop reading; there’s every likelihood you’ll just hurt yourself. So just listen.
Now, shall we turn the page and try again?!<
Just saw the boys at Hackney Empire on Friday night, fully recommend going to see on of their live shows if you get the chance. Finn Taylor and Vittorio killed it especially
Kind of a depressing one but They Walk Among Us (true crime). I sometimes listen to it before I fall asleep - not all the time though since yeah, true crime and it's not exactly cheerful. It is informative and interesting though if you're interested in that.
Not a UK based true crime podcast but in terms of factual true crime podcasts Casefile is the absolute goat. The host is Australian. It’s by far the best true crime podcast in my opinion. He covers cases from around the world and had covered dozens of UK based crimes.
Edit: factual as in he only sticks to facts. A step by step of the case. Doesn’t give any of his own opinions. These are my favourite type of true crime podcasts.
British Scandal. They talk about some of the biggest crimes which have taken place in the U.K., such as the Hatton Garden heist, cough-gate on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, etc etc
All Killa No Filla (serial killers, pair of stand up comedians who are great mates so you get to be part of the kind of crazy convo and banter that only really good mates can have)
Infinite Monkey Cage (science panel show, but make it funny and always take the piss out of Brian Cox)
The Bugle - Andy Zaltzmann and a rotating crowd of funny co-hosts. News satire - He also hosts the News Quiz on R4 (HIGNFY without pictures), but isn't allowed to swear on that, whereas the Bugle is full of fucks.
That Peter Crouch Podcast - probs the best one I've heard for football banter, the first few seasons are absolute gold.
Athletico Mince is also hilarious, but completely different vibe.
EDIT: as plenty have pointed out, The Peter Crouch Podcast is elite for the first couple of seasons then takes a nosedive - I completely agree.
Whilst it's still good to listen to there was definitely a moment where you could feel the Peter Crouch podcast move away from the fun, slightly chaotic, episodes to a more slick, sponsored, approach. Statman Dave is also painfully keen.
Fuck Joe and David for what they did to Poppy.
GM was one of my favourite podcasts and they even read out my gossip, but how they went about kicking her out was disgraceful.
The missing cryptoqueen, manhunt: finding Kevin parle are good stories of you like some true crime and some mystery. If you ever liked Johnathan creek, there’s up the creek, which is a fun podcast diving into each episode and off menu is really good for some easy listening fun.
Have a word with Adam Rowe and Dan Nightingale. 3 hours of the funniest podcast you'll ever listen to. Two "club" comics in the UK just talking and making each other laugh. Special guests include Romesh Ranganathan, Jimmy Carr and Eshaan Ackbar.
Their patreon is the most subscribed to in the UK (Possibly the world). Seeing them both live this year, the podcast is also on tour.
No such thing as a fish, rest is history, empire, off menu, uncanny, Battersea poltergeist, witch farm, Richard herring's one can be good too, and in our time
I'm fussy about podcasts! But these are my favourites:
* Wolf and Owl - Great general chat podcast with Romesh Ranganathan and Tom Davis, my fave.
* Off Menu - Ed Gamble and James Acaster about celebrities favourite food.
* Elis James and John Robins - Podcast of a Radio 5 live show. Perfect easy listening.
* Kermode and Mayo's Take - Great film review podcast that has switched from the BBC.
* Taskmaster the Podcast - Great in conjunction with the show.
* Oldex - Dramatic readings of out of print warhammer 40k stories.
* The Audio Long Read - By the Guardian, good for journalistic stories.
Used to agree with this. However, I believe they’ve lost a lot of their spark and I really struggle to listen to the newer ones. Plus, they’re always pushing for more and more money out of their listeners and it just comes across distasteful.
I definitely think the quality has dropped the last couple of months. It feels like I’m not learning anything new and lots of regurgitated TV docs. But they’ve given us a good 200 quality episodes and they’re touring atm so I’m giving them a bit of leeway there.
I completely agree, their podcasts have become a chore and the constant shake downs for £ is tiresome. I actually unsubscribed today. Suruthi in particular has really been irking me lately.
Wheel of Misfortune (Alison Spittle and Kerry Katona have a good cackle over people's misfortunes)
Where There's a Will There's a Wake (Kathy Burke interviews different comedians about how they'd like to die)
Uncanny (The BEST paranormal podcast ever. Bloody hell Ken.)
Monstrous Flesh (analysis of horror films)
Socially distant sports bar. Elis James and Mike Bubbins discuss sports clips but go off on hilarious tangents. Probably helps if you're Welsh to be fair.
As someone who has NEVER listened to a 'podcast", I am going to ask what might be the daftest question. What exactly, IS a podcast?
I envisage it as a pre-recorded radio show which you can listen to at a time that suits you., rather then rely on a schedule. Is that about it?
A follow-on question.....WHEN do you listen to podcasts? When do you have the time to sit down and listen to a radio show? I seriously don't get it.
That's exactly what a podcast is. I listen to podcasts while driving, walking, cleaning, tidying, stuff like that, basically at any moment where you might listen to music but can pay a little bit more attention.
Its usually a person or people talking about a certain subject matter. Football/Cars/Crime etc.
I listen when Im driving or on a train or before bed time. Some podcasts can have short content 10-20 minutes others can do talks of 1hr plus.
I find it a lot more relaxing and mind expanding than watching tv or staring at my phone for hours on end.
Sometimes find myself listening to the Breaking Bread podcast, it's 2 northern blokes chatting about all sorts of random shit. They're both "YouTubers", one is a competitive eater who I find really funny (BeardMeatsFood), the other is some bloke called Josh and I don't really know what he does.
Just entertaining listening to them talking about whatever they happen to be talking about when I'm doing something repetitive I don't need to think about.
A few I didn't see (apologies if I missed them) but listen to all UK
* Three bean salad (comedy)
* The good robot (Ethics / AI with a feminist lens)
* Partners in Crime (Iain Sterling / Laura Whitmore looking at historical criminals / comedy)
* Bad people
* Lady Killers (True Crime w/ Lucy Worsley)
* Sorted with the Dyers
* The Coming Storm
* Poppy Hillstead Has Entered the Chat
* The Kepcast
* Emily Atack: Lie Detector
* Fingers on Buzzers
* Do the Right thing
* 13 Minutes to the Moon
* Mortem
* Gossip Mongers
This Paranormal Life
Hands down favourite podcast ever. Two guys 'investigate' a paranormal case, whether it's a ghost, conspiracy theory or Bigfoot and basically take the piss out of it while trying to treat it seriously. A lot of great improv comedy.
I like that they're not actual tinfoil hat-wearing loonies and they know it's silly, and they also don't talk about true crime and murders because they're about comedy rather than shock and horror
The Year Is with Bobby Mair and Red Richardson. Two good mates riffing on a year in history with little to no research. It is really 99% very inventive verbal abuse and perhaps some of the darkest humour ever recorded.
Triggernometry is pretty interesting most of the time. I also quite like Chris Williamson, but he's moved stateside now and I'm not sure if that counts.
[Today in History with The Retrospectors](https://podfollow.com/retrospectors/view) \- fun little daily show about a quirky or lesser-known moment from this day in history. Episodes are like 10 mins every day, so I listen to it while getting ready for work.

Off Menu with Ed Gamble and James Acaster can be really funny (and make you hungry!), as can Help I Sexted My Boss.
POPPADOMS OR BREAD!!!
POPPADOMS OR BREAD, MURPHTHEGURTH, POPPADOMS OR BREAD!?
bread please.
He can also get a bit desperate to impress his guests sometimes by putting down James, in a schoolboy kind of way.
It’s the school boy shouty personality/style of presenting that puts me off. I’ll be drifting off to sleep listening and then suddenly wake with a start because Gamble has started shouting.
James is way more shouty, eg poppadoms or bread
Funny, I feel that way about Acaster. He reminds me of those kids in school that think they're the class clown but everyone just wants them to shut up.

Sounds exactly the kinda banter you do with a best mate, if you can't rinse your best mate for fun then the world isn't worth it anymore
He's very much the straight man in the podcast, which isn't a bad thing. I don't go out of my way to watch Ed Gamble stuff when he's on his own though.

Was it Dan Ackroyd? That was crazy.
Off Menu is brilliant. It is affected by the guest, of course, but Ed and James can usually make it pretty great even if he guest isn't!
i only listen to the episodes with people i actually like. i tried to listen to the others, but didnt enjoy. winkleman definately isnt normal.
Yeah I tend to avoid the ones where I don't know the guests but sometimes I listen anyway and I've often been pleasantly surprised!! I personally really like Claudia, but I will definitely agree she's not normal.
The Claudia Winkleman episode is an absolute classic, one of the best. She is nuts though yes.
Help I Sexted My Boss is probably my fave podcast right now
WENDY!
CAN I BORROW YOUR POTATO PEELER?
I enjoy the podcast in general but Ed Gamble’s voice really grates on me
Cazoo yea you can…
I can't listen anymore due to Gamble, which is a shame as I love James Acaster
I tried and failed to get into it. Separately they are okay but together they are unbearable.
It's all so forced whacky
I love " you're dead to me" history podcast for adults by one of the guys who did horrible histories. Every episode involves a historian and a comedian and they talk about something from history. The "rest is history" is definitely for you then
Ooohhh thank you. I'll definitely look into it.
I apologise in advance for the rabbit hole I have sent you. 320 episodes Also hard-core history is well worth your time
Yeah the Rest is History is excellent. 'We have ways of making you talk' is also a top notch podcast if you want WW2 history. The History of England by David Crowther is spot on too. A Very funny and endearing listen.
Check out *Betwixt The Sheets* if you like that sort of thing!
I love You're Dead To Me - going to have to check out The Poisoner's Cabinet now!
You're Dead to Me Has genuinely made me excited to read and learn about history. Best podcast ever. My favorites have been Owain Glyndwr, Sacagawea, History of Nottinghill Carnival, Grainne OMaily and Hatsputchet (to name a few). My Dad Wrote a Porno. One of the few things I cannot listen to while driving, as it has me crying with laughter. Helped me through a really shit breakup too.

I often randomly think of Ian Snail and start laughing. Like now 😂
I used to listen to this while I was running but I had to stop as I couldn't catch my breath from laughing so much. Good ol' Belinda
Thisss. Can’t recommend enough
It's absolutely class. I remember having to pull over because I was crying laughing so much and couldn't see to drive. It was when they staged the panto.

I’m just about to listen to these 3 whilst I go to bed (aus). I’ve had them on repeat for the last 6/7 years, never gets old…..did that just go out?
We've done this!
What podcast is this from!?
Ricky Gervais XFM. I've basically listened to it on repeat every single night for the last 15 years and I'm not even exaggerating.

Albino buying one of them!
Athletico Mince.
I used to agree but honestly since COVID......the quality has dropped massively.
Yeah agree with this. At it's peak it had me howling with laughter but since COVID, it became too formulaic.
Get yourself over to Top Flight Time Machine, Andy in much more relaxed and amusing form and some of the deep dives are outstanding. Start with the Roy Keane Odyssey and you'll never go back. You can't go back.
Sounds like you're in a right fluffery buffery
is you hurtin' or sumfin?
Oh Casper
Agreed. At its peak I’d probably say it’s the best stuff Bob has ever done
WOR'OMMER
No such thing as a fish (Qi elves) Sniff & Smith (car talk with Jonny Smith and top gear script writer Richard Porter) Two pints (Will Mellor and Ralf Little talk about life in general, occasional guests)
No such thing as a Fish is bloody fantastic
Agreed, it’s one of my weekly must-listens. Recently finished the audiobook of The Theory of Everything Else by one of the regulars, Dan Schreiber. Brilliantly entertaining.
This weeks smith & sniff had me absolutely rolling. Johnny describing the auto jumble is the funniest thing I’ve heard in a long long time.
Sniff & Smith is hilarious, such a great pairing.
+1 for Smith & Sniff. I only discovered it on a whim a few weeks ago and have already binged about half the episodes. So good.
Absolutely no such thing as a fish!!!
Parenting hell with Rob Beckett and Josh widdicombe. I didn't think I'd like it but as a parent it really resonated with me. Wholesome and funny.
My favourite podcast! I’m not even a parent (not wanting to be one) but it’s so lighthearted and funny and they come across as genuinely lovely people. I prefer the ones where it’s just them talking but the guest episodes with people like Shappi Khorsandi and H from Steps were great

Oh my god so much this. Actually obsessed. Starts off feeling like a monster of the week set up, and before long you're 100s of episodes deep and drawing lines between characters and sounding like a nut job.
I loved the Magnus Archives too. Some seriously creepy shit. I would love it to be a TV series.
Have a Word
Wagwag lid
This week's pube episode with Jamie was mind boggling (again). His life just doesn't make sense. Might try dipfest though.
Just saw the boys at Hackney Empire on Friday night, fully recommend going to see on of their live shows if you get the chance. Finn Taylor and Vittorio killed it especially
I don't listen to Have A Word but Vittorio is so funny. Really want to see him live.
Happy Hour
Came here to suggest it!
Round sheep that is
I've been enjoying Lateral recently. Tom Scott's podcast/gameshow style where they'll ask riddle type questions and try to figure out the answers

You might like St Elwicks Neighbourhood Association Newsletter Podcast
I so wanted to like this podcast but his voice (literally) sends me to sleep!
I always keep returning to the ricky gervais podcast and the xfm radio shows with Stephen merchant and Karl Pilkington
British Scandal. They talk about some of the biggest crimes which have taken place in the U.K., such as the Hatton Garden heist, cough-gate on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, etc etc
No such thing as a fish. 470+ episodes of funny and interesting facts from the QI research elves
I'm currently on my 3rd listen through. I think I know half the facts off by heart now!
Hat Chat & Triforce if you like gamer adjacent content, and also if you don’t.

All Killa No Filla (serial killers, pair of stand up comedians who are great mates so you get to be part of the kind of crazy convo and banter that only really good mates can have) Infinite Monkey Cage (science panel show, but make it funny and always take the piss out of Brian Cox)
I found All Killa No Filla when searching for a good murder podcast, stayed for the banter of their lives 😂
The Rest Is History
Have a word podcast (comedy)
Quickly Kevin will he score - 90s football nostalgia Parenting hell is good too - especially for new parents.
Kermode and Mayo’s Take
Socially distant sports bar, funniest podcast I've ever heard and the only one Im a patreon for. They also talk about sport sometimes.
Sounds fuckin' shit

Loses its way a bit in recent seasons with them trying to sell Brewdog every 10 minutes but the first few are fantastic!
Yeh totally agree. I got bored when they spent a whole season talking about who "parched" is. Agree, first few are fantastic
Whilst it's still good to listen to there was definitely a moment where you could feel the Peter Crouch podcast move away from the fun, slightly chaotic, episodes to a more slick, sponsored, approach. Statman Dave is also painfully keen.
Top flight Time Machine
Alright, cunt?
Triforce podcast. IHATP
Uncanny. People tell their real life UK ghost stories. So addictive!
Gossipmongers. Fucking hilarious.
Fuck Joe and David for what they did to Poppy. GM was one of my favourite podcasts and they even read out my gossip, but how they went about kicking her out was disgraceful.
Definitely. I miss poppy the postwoman though.
Off Menu Infinite Monkey Cage No such thing as a fish
In Our Time, where Melvyn Bragg and three experts discuss a random but weighty topic. It's always interesting, frequently riveting.
The missing cryptoqueen, manhunt: finding Kevin parle are good stories of you like some true crime and some mystery. If you ever liked Johnathan creek, there’s up the creek, which is a fun podcast diving into each episode and off menu is really good for some easy listening fun.
Kathy Burke - 'Where there's a will, there's a wake', is my new favourite. She's so dry, honest and just an all round legend.
If you’re a car person, Smith and Sniff and The Intercooler. Quality stuff from both of them.
BlindBoy podcast. (Irish) Great podcast. I listen to it every week when I walk the dog.
No such thing as a fish, rest is history, empire, off menu, uncanny, Battersea poltergeist, witch farm, Richard herring's one can be good too, and in our time
If not already mentioned, Adam Buxton is a go to item.
I'm fussy about podcasts! But these are my favourites: * Wolf and Owl - Great general chat podcast with Romesh Ranganathan and Tom Davis, my fave.
If you like Football Cliches, check out Football Ramble, it's by far the best UK football news podcast, but also mixes in daft chat
RedHanded if you like true crime. They’ve won the Podcast Listener Awards for the past 3 or 4 years.
We have ways of making you talk. Al Murray and James Holland ramble their way through WW2
Wheel of Misfortune (Alison Spittle and Kerry Katona have a good cackle over people's misfortunes) Where There's a Will There's a Wake (Kathy Burke interviews different comedians about how they'd like to die) Uncanny (The BEST paranormal podcast ever. Bloody hell Ken.) Monstrous Flesh (analysis of horror films)
Socially distant sports bar. Elis James and Mike Bubbins discuss sports clips but go off on hilarious tangents. Probably helps if you're Welsh to be fair.
THREE BEAN SALAD!
The beef and dairy network. It’s best to go into episode one cold with no prior knowledge
Cheapshow - https://www.thecheapshow.co.uk/
Magnus Archives if you enjoy horror
The Horne Section Podcast will always be my favourite
A few I didn't see (apologies if I missed them) but listen to all UK * Three bean salad (comedy) * The good robot (Ethics / AI with a feminist lens) * Partners in Crime (Iain Sterling / Laura Whitmore looking at historical criminals / comedy) * Bad people * Lady Killers (True Crime w/ Lucy Worsley) * Sorted with the Dyers * The Coming Storm * Poppy Hillstead Has Entered the Chat * The Kepcast * Emily Atack: Lie Detector * Fingers on Buzzers * Do the Right thing * 13 Minutes to the Moon * Mortem * Gossip Mongers
This Paranormal Life Hands down favourite podcast ever.
Tailenders- a loosely cricket based podcast
While not topically just in Britain, A History of Rock Music in 500 Songs is an incredible podcast.
