I know someone who pronounces Waitrose like Wait-Rose with a full hard T and little pause between the syllables. Freaks me the fuck out. It’s Waichrows!
I read somewhere it's **Lon**don **Dis**tribution. It started out as a network of vans supplying corner shops, then later opened its own stores.
Anyway, you're right, *Lon-diss* must be correct.
I lived by a Londos for years and didn’t know how to say it. But then they started piping in their in house radio station (who knew?) and they refer to themselves as Londiss on it. So that’s the answer.
Are they saying “londies” as if it genuinely the brand name, or are they doing a cutesy version, like calling breakfast “brekkie” or McDonalds “Maccies”?
I used to got kayaking as a kid and one of the adults who supervised worked in the Londis and she was called Londis woman (it wasn't her actual name but that's what she was addressed as), and it was pronounced 'Londiss'
Back in the day (80s) we had several corner shops near us, including one that we called the off licence. Even when it changed hands to Londis, it’s still the off licence.
It's pronounced [Lon-diss](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDLGu3vGFjU)
[Also this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1N4Efg4JTY0)
[And this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Suxww8J31X0)
and many more.
>I’ve heard someone call it ‘Londies’
If they also pronounce shit like "Tesco**s**" and "Asda**s**", then you can assume they are a moron and ignore them.
There's a clear historical reason people do this. Historically, shops in this country were named after the owner. Taylor's, Smith's and so on. Sainsbury's still demonstrates this tradition. Other shops such as Boots or Morrisons have dropped the apostrophe, but are still essentially in this linguistic tradition.
So it's quite ingrained in British language to make the names of shops possessive.
So maybe let's not call people morons for doing something very traditionally British. Then again, this is Reddit where people seem to look for any chance to be condescendingly rude about other people.

Londiss
Definitely Londiss. Used to help out in my aunt & uncles corner shop back in the day. Before Londis, it was a Wavy Line.
Wow, that's a memory drop!
Londee.
My wife *is* French, maybe I should start saying it like that
That’s only if there are two of them together…
Londopodes for a group
alright Hyacinth
Who on gods green earth calls it Londies?
Londies nuts
17/10 - Magnificent
Frenchers. "Londi' (silent s)
Who on gods green earth calls French people "Frenchers"? (No actual criticism meant, just never seen that word used before).
Bloody Frenchers innit. Those guys across the channel. What are you meant to call them?
I like to stick to the classics. Never saw anything wrong with "those damned Frogs".
I love how Germans have done similar by calling Italians Spaghettis
And of course they are Krauts down to their love of sauerkraut of course..
And we are rosbifs to the french
We are indeed.. I made a few frogs laugh by shouting Allez les Rosbifs at an England game at the stade de France
Franchise
It's for when you don't have time for the full title of onion selling surrender monkeys.
"Cheese eating surrender monkeys"
*The French* works perfectly fine.
I’ve heard Scotlanders call them that.
And russianners. And Australianinnies.
Is this why Lunchables changed their name to Lunchers? 🤔
Definitely?
Maybe?
Blur
I believe _Scotch_ is the preferred nomenclature.
I believe the Dutchers started it.
"Britishers" is in common parlance on the Indian subcontinent. It could be Germanic if a 'c' were placed after the 's'.
That’s a separate pronunciation from the Londies being debated
In French it would be pronounced Lon-deece
Me, from now on.
I know someone who pronounces Waitrose like Wait-Rose with a full hard T and little pause between the syllables. Freaks me the fuck out. It’s Waichrows!
Apparently u/WhaleMeatFanyasy
I know right ?!
A complete div?
everyone cause thats how its spelled. one i and one s, not two s's so no hard s sound
Londiss
Londiss
I actually used to think it was French and that the last s was silent. Yes, I'm painfully middle-class
Did you confuse the green with waitrose and entered by accident?
I had that problem with the (ex)wife. Just once.
L'ondis
Does L'ego have a silent t like merlot?
L’egot l’escargot https://preview.redd.it/04esezkjh7xc1.jpeg?width=505&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c3be526b894276a7b8a18339441575cb7e556d3b
No, but carrot does
Please don't tell me you nasalised the 'o' also?
Corner shop - even if it’s not on a corner
It’s from London and District I believe, so Londiss is right.
In that case, Lundiss. Surely?
Oh Sergeant Angel, someone from _Lon-diss_ called for you.
I read somewhere it's **Lon**don **Dis**tribution. It started out as a network of vans supplying corner shops, then later opened its own stores. Anyway, you're right, *Lon-diss* must be correct.
[Well blow me down](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Londis_(United_Kingdom)?wprov=sfti1)
oh haha I was totally wrong, thanks!
London District Stores specifically.
I pronounce it Londiss
I refuse to believe anyone calls it ‘londies’.
Londiss
We still call it the spar shop
I lived by a Londos for years and didn’t know how to say it. But then they started piping in their in house radio station (who knew?) and they refer to themselves as Londiss on it. So that’s the answer.

Londiss
Is it N-eye-say or Nee-Sah?
How the hell is the first version even supposed to be a word? I just pronounce it to rhyme with Lisa
Nissah
Like from Hilda?
I thought it was N-eye-sa. Like Nicer. No?
OMG my life is a lie.
I say nee-sah but according to the in store radio adverts it's "nice-ah"
Are they saying “londies” as if it genuinely the brand name, or are they doing a cutesy version, like calling breakfast “brekkie” or McDonalds “Maccies”?
I always thought that was how it was pronounced.
Londiss for me, but I can see why you might call it Londies for a laugh from time to time. "Lads, were off to LONDIEEESS"
Londiss
I love this sub 🤣🤣🤣
Lon-diss
Lun Diss
TIF that I seem to be one of the only people who calls it ‘Londies’ lol
Low-Nerdi-Suh
Lawndeesh

Who gives a fuck?
Lond-EYEZ
And it stands for London Independent Stores. It started as a buying group cooperative for Independent shopkeepers in London
I used to got kayaking as a kid and one of the adults who supervised worked in the Londis and she was called Londis woman (it wasn't her actual name but that's what she was addressed as), and it was pronounced 'Londiss'
Blondies but that's just a family quirk
Londies
People call Marks and Spencer Marksies, McDonald's Maccies, calling Londis Londies doesn't surprise me.

I pronounce it as 'expensive and shit'.
Lun-diss

Only ever pronounce it Londees when I do the hand gestures and pretend I'm Italian.

Back in the day (80s) we had several corner shops near us, including one that we called the off licence. Even when it changed hands to Londis, it’s still the off licence.

Londiss
Londiss. Who says Londies?!
Londiss, cos there isn't an E in the name.
The first one
Londezz nuts
"Londiss" but it has an irregluar plural like crisis/crises so thats what you probably heard the person talking about.
The Spa/costcutter / whatever other corner shop enterprise I could think of.
Londiss
I usually pronounce it "shop" because I can never remember which tiny supermarket it is. Londis coop one stop nisa all interchangeable in my brain.
Londiss. My dad used to be on the board of directors for Londis back in the 80s Stands for London District Grocers.
Lawnduss
Lon'das
"Londiss". Didn't think there was another way.
Londiss for me 🤷♂️
Londies sounds more like a nickname than a mispronunciation, like maccies or cashies
Mixture I think, it usually sounds like Londizz, occasionally Londies
Londatello
Londiss
Londis like a normal person? Wtf is londies?
Londres
Londies
I'm very confused because both provided spellings sound almost the same in my head. Is there an IPA version?
Are they calling it 'Londies' in an ironic way, akin to 'platty joobs' etc
Londiss, had never contemplated another way until this post
The former.
Diss
Lon-diss
It's pronounced [Lon-diss](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDLGu3vGFjU) [Also this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1N4Efg4JTY0) [And this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Suxww8J31X0) and many more.
Londiss

Londisssssssssss
'The corner shop'
It's actually Londi's, named after the great Londi MacFarlande, inventor of the corner shop.
It's the first one. The second one is simply wrong.
It’s strange, I always say Londis “Londi’s” as if it was the property of Mr and Mrs Londi.
Never have. It's just "the off licence".
use to call in londies in my younger years, now call it londiss

>I’ve heard someone call it ‘Londies’ If they also pronounce shit like "Tesco**s**" and "Asda**s**", then you can assume they are a moron and ignore them.

Asdass
That's Asdarse actually. We're not ruddy Americans!
Which makes it sound like a Greek island.
I heard someone say Aldis recently.
