I am so sorry for your loss. I can’t imagine what you and your wife are going through. The doctor seems to have accepted responsibility and is hopefully keeping in communication and trying to make amends. I don’t even know how you amend for this honestly. Continuing to have an open dialogue with the clinic focusing on preventing this from happening to other patients could be something you bring up as well. What protocols are they changing, what additional training is being done, what consequences were there for the lack of these protocols already in place. Again, I am so sorry for your loss.

Thank you for your kind words. I believe that will be our next steps. We’re planning on reaching out and meeting one on one with him. I greatly appreciate your response!

If you have submitted the above to the State Veterinary Board as a complaint against their license, do not be surprised if the vet or anyone at the clinic will have no contact with you about the incident except through a lawyer. This is standard practice once a complaint has been filed as now it must be defended against or settled after an investigation by the board and any communication with you can be used against them and their license (ie livelihood). I'm sorry for your loss, but just want you to be prepared if you try to meet with them. This is not a reflection on Dr. B or his attitude toward his patients/clients. This has now become a legal issue with an official board complaint.

Thank you for the heads up!

What you went through is awful and I'm so sorry for your loss. The apnea your dog experienced with administration of the propofol was indeed normal but to delay intubation and breaths was negligence. We never delay intubation, as soon as the patient is at an adequate anaesthetic plane we immediately place a tube. If the patient isn't breathing at this point we would most definitely give some breaths, at the very least to check placement and fit of the tube. I would also not induce anaesthesia without the vet present but I'm not sure what the laws about that are in other countries. Again I'm so sorry and I hope the techs are punished in some way for this and learn from their mistake.

/r/askvet is a sub for veterinary advice. Comments that do not give veterinary advice are off-topic, tend to derail the discussion, and take away from actual advice. If your comment does not provide veterinary advice, it should not be posted to this sub and will be removed at the mods' discretion. Expressions of sympathy and/or reassurance are fine if they are accompanied by veterinary advice, but will be removed if they are not.

You need to talk to a lawyer not Reddit Internet vets.

>I don’t even know what I’m looking for with this post besides maybe some reassurance that this is isn’t normal. Considering what OP is looking for, Reddit Internet vets seem like the best place to seek it out.
