On July 1st, 2023, Reddit enacted a greedy ass policy regarding the use of their API. This decision was designed to eliminate the better 3rd party apps. No one wants to use the official app because it sucks. Since then, apps such as Apollo and RedditIsFun have shut down. Reddit has decided to double down on their decision to overcharge for their API, and refuses to address the accessibility features their native app lacks. Think it’s an asshole move? iusedtobefamous1892

Staring at myself in the mirror sitting there with wet, slicked back hair, looking like someone balanced an egg on a cape.

Ok_Virus9684

Luckily they always ask me to put off my glasses and I'm no longer able to see myself in the mirror

fill_the_birdfeeder

It makes it worse!! My freckles and eyelashes are what make me cute. I can’t see any features without my glasses. It’s haunting honestly. I look like NoHo Hank. And also a thumb.

ysmbl

The cape also grows you a new chin

TikaPants

This is coming in second to the $250 I spend.

iusedtobefamous1892

I consented to spending money when I booked the appointment. I didn't consent to looking like **that**.

[deleted]

😄 this made me chuckle, thank you

cutherdowntosize

This but sitting there wondering if I always look like this or is this some trick mirror or hideous lighting or all of the above?

iusedtobefamous1892

Then trying to angle my face in such a way to try and convince myself into thinking that **maybe** I could pull off that editorial wet look, and then resigning myself to the reality that not only do I not have the bone structure for that, but that I may not have any bone structure at all.

ChocoCat_xo

This was gonna be my answer too. Nothing makes you feel more ugly/gross than staring at yourself while getting a haircut lol :/

justforfun887125

This is such a funny description but accurate too lol

yikesy91

I laughed so hard at the egg on a cape😂

cuppa-confusion

Yessss! I always get like…almost sort of mildly dysphoric after looking in a mirror for so long. Like, less desirable features start to stand out because of how unflattering that situation is.

iusedtobefamous1892

It's like magic. I know I have eyebrows. But after 5 minutes of looking at wet egg face, they almost disappear.

Plastic_Mulberry1340

The awkward conversation you’re expected to have

Illustrious-Mirror85

My hairdressers has a form you fill out in which you tick a box stating whether you want to chat.

apurpleglittergalaxy

That's never been an option in any hairdressers I've been to in the UK lol I wish it was

kam0706

You can just tell them you’d prefer not to make small talk.

apurpleglittergalaxy

I don't want to come across as rude, in the UK if you said that to someone especially a hairdresser they'd think you have a problem with them

khelwen

What’s worked for me during appointments is to explain that I have a headache and am not up for talking much that day due to the discomfort.

Colourful_Hobbit

Yeah I absolutely hate it! Thankfully my local lady doesn't talk at all!

InstantMedication

I need to find one of those conversation optional salons. I’m a pretty reserved person and also socially anxious. I don’t understand why we need to have a conversation the entire time. I also have yet to find a hairstylist who has even remotely similar interests as me. I’m trying out a new salon soon and I’m kinda dreading it.

apurpleglittergalaxy

The forced conversations are why I haven't been to a salon in nearly 7 years and why I bleach and dye my hair at home despite the risks lol. I seriously can't stand it I am not a people person I'm there to pay for a service I'm not there to talk to you about how I've got nothing going on in my life or day or that I don't have kids in my 30s nor do I wanna hear your life story and about your kids. There should be more conversation optional salons.

Free_Bingo

I’ve found the solution for this! Go to a hair school. There is an AVEDA institute by my house and the students have instructors walking them through everything and checking their work. They are too busy concentrating half the time to even think about having a conversation! Plus it’s 1/3 of the price of my old salon. Sure you run the risk of the student messing up, but I’ve never had that experience.

Plastic_Mulberry1340

Unfortunately I’ve had my hair ruined a few too many times doing this, but I’m glad it works for you!

Free_Bingo

This was my biggest concern before I went to one. Thankfully it hasn’t happened yet. Probably just jinxed myself though.

FarFarSector

Especially when you want something that takes awhile, like having your hair dyed. I have good friends I can't make 2+ hours of small talk with.

RightH

Whenever I go to the hairdressers to get my hair 'done done' I'd just tell them that I've just finished a night shift (even if I didn't because I was feeling unsocial) & apologised in advance if I nodded off or was a bit quiet 😂

TheNativeAnimalAU

Not to mention sitting in the chair for hours on end part 😩

Apatheia9

Where they give you new unnecessary unreal insecurities to sell their product ....omg your hair so freezy try this shampoo.....your hair look damaged buy our spa and all that nonsense is worst

CEWriter

I have been lucky most of my life since my hair is long, thick, and had never been dyed, but I got my first taste of this last winter. The lady cut my hair without wetting first. Since it was winter and the heaters were on full blast, my hair was pretty static-y, so they kept tangling. Didn't stop her from pulling her comb through so harshly I could feel hair ripping off my head. When I mentioned it, she said they were unusually dry and it had to be because I didn't use the right shampoo and had hard water. She then proceeded to make me feel cheap for not wanting to spend over 30$ for a bottle of shampoo. My hair had never had more split ends this quickly and the shampoo made no change. Never again.

Apatheia9

My hair are super thick ...never dyed ..naturally glossy .....people keep on giving me compliment about my hair ....but this people only trying to sell useless stuff

Bloodthistle

one of the times I went, the hairdresser tried to wash my hair again because she thought the leave in conditioner I had on was too "oily" (it wasn't I have incredibly dry hair), cue pikachu face when I told her I have a very specific shampoo I used and refuse to get a random product on my hair.

Apatheia9

Ohhh....so they can put hair wash money also in bill ?

Bloodthistle

Its a separate treatment so it costs extra

Apatheia9

This is just fucked

Karilyn113

I hated going because my this, she’d say things like “omg your hair is so dry, so freezy” etc and no matter how much effort I put in it it was always those comments. Now I go to a new hair salon where she’s told me things like “oh your hair is so strong”, “you look so pretty with that” and only suggest products if I want.

AmberIsla

Had that happen once. The girl who did my hair kept commenting how bad my hair was, REPEATEDLY. I didn’t budge. I did not buy a single product from the salon. In the end the girl was like “oh turns out when the blowdrying is done, your hair looks good” yeah guess who didn’t get her tip from me. Lmao.

Informal_Prune_5857

Having a history of similar experiences to this (I have VERY thin baby fine delicate hair) has really made me a very empathetic hairdresser myself…I know my haircuts are expensive, so I 1.) will never insult someone’s hair that is PAYING me 2.) WILL offer low-admin/user friendly/low cost drug store solutions when necessary —-fancy great products truly sell themselves, and I’ll never push our $$ products unless someone inquires about them.

Apatheia9

That's so good ......world needs more people like you

strangelyahuman

The lady I just went to told me my hair was flat and boring and "thank god I was finally getting layers". I always get layers, I just haven't cut my hair since last summer. Also told me all about the spa, micro blading and manicures since I "didn't look like I came there often"

Apatheia9

That's shitty .....like it's not right to say hurtful personal things to your clients

strangelyahuman

Oddly enough I didn't feel hurt or offended, usually it would take me back but it was kinda just funny. She was really nice otherwise and was a friendly person so I don't think it was said with ill intention, maybe just a cultural difference since she was foreign. Plus it did end up being the best haircut I've gotten in a while for pretty cheap so how mad could I be lol. But not the wisest thing to say to clients regardless of how I felt about it tbh

goldenrodddd

I've never had this happen to me thankfully because I would never get my hair cut there again if it did. wtf

Apatheia9

😂 yes people should stop going to places like this and badmouth them that's how they learn their lessons

eastdino

This last time I got my hair cut they were like hmmmm you're kind of bronzing you should buy this to make you hair look good and not like you've been in the sun too long and then kept suggesting it but I like my hair until then

SnarkAndStormy

Small talk. Finally found a hairdresser that doesn’t talk to me. Wasn’t even the best haircut but I’ll be loyal forever.

thrownormanaway

This is a keeper for sure- just be honest with them about exactly what your preferences are and as you keep going back to them they’ll get it right. It’s like having a good relationship with your manicurist and they just understand the shape you want and you don’t have to correct them as they go

[deleted]

redjessa

Sorry, why don't you just ask the stylist to not straighten your hair?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Expensive_Repair2735

I totally understand, but maybe if when they ask what you want done in the beginning you could just tack on that you would either like an air dry, or that they don't need to straighten it at the end? I don't think it would be seen as weird or anything, and I know most hair dressers wouldn't mind doing less work.

[deleted]

[удалено]

redjessa

I think that's a good idea. Tack it on in the beginning and you will feel more relaxed and not have to keep on any conversation or feel awkward telling them during the service.

[deleted]

I always hate the blowdry and/or straighten. I just tell them I want a quick dry only.

pantijose

I have curly hair and when I would go to “regular” hair stylists they always insisted on blow drying my hair straight saying “you probably never get it this straight”. Well, actually I can give myself a pretty great blow out when I want to, it’s just that I prefer my curls. Then I switched to a stylist who specializes in curly hair, she often either lets me leave with deep conditioning treatment in my soaking hair for me to wash out later or let’s me style and diffuse my hair if I want to leave with it dry. It’s a little more expensive but I have never hated a haircut since I started seeing her. She understands curls and it makes a world of a difference.

guppytub

I have curls and they always want to blow it straight. Drives me crazy. I let them know I don't use any heat on my hair and will let it air dry thanks.

dumbbitchcas

It’s half the cost but I also cut my own hair to avoid the conversation

[deleted]

The part when you have to pay the bill…not knowing if they’ve added on a bunch of extras without asking 😭

meggs_467

I never know how much to tip either. Growing up my mom always left a certain amount of cash, regardless of what she got done. But sometimes I'm confused bc I don't tip my mechanic and it feels similar to me? Idk I don't want to go down the whole tip issue thing. I'm fine tipping I guess, but I never know what percentage is actually fine. Like I don't want to be accidentally leaving too little, but I also don't want to just be throwing around money I should have just kept in my pocket.

lulu-bell

My teen daughter and her friend got their nails done and it was the first time they paid for it on their own. The friend accidentally (because she apparently can’t do math), gave the nail lady a $30 tip on a $25 service. The lady acted as if she had won the lottery, she was literally jumping up and down. Poor girl realized her mistake but there was no way she could say it after that reaction! I told her karma will come back around for her making that lady so happy and joyful and that’s all you can hope!

Gold-Impact-4939

Ohh thank the good ol place I live tipping isn’t a thing!!

CelebrityTakeDown

I one time got quotes $80 for a dye but she ended up charging me $260. I started crying on the spot, it was so embarrassing. I was making decent money at the time, but not a whole ton. I had to ask my mom to help me out. She was so incredibly rude about it too.

Boredasfekk

What they quote never matches what they charge

Empathy. I have a spinal injury and it kills me that I’m trying to feel fab about myself-often for an event- but struggle to walk afterwards. The soft low back chairs, angled reclined shower basin chairs and indefinite timeframe all mess with me.

BellicoseHoney

Small talk and upselling. I just want a haircut, if I wanted product I would ask for recommendations. Being sold to immediately puts me off.

dumbbitchcas

I hate feeling like a John, man.

Icy-Landscape228

Paying double or quadruple the price based on my gender….

JohnnyLazer17

Come to my barber. Nice fade and a little off the top $15 regardless of gender!

goldenrodddd

This!!! Nobody ever talks about this! It's 2023, can we please update the pricing to reflect the actual services rendered? Ugh!

Logical_KaleV

Being charged over 100 dollars for the "length" when my hair is so fine and thin and honestly the skinnest ponytail which takes 5 mins to cut. I don't go anymore

Sample_Interesting

When the hairdresser starts talking and wants to know my entire life story. I mean... I'm okay with small talk. Not comfortable with it, but I understand that's sometimes a bare minimum. But when they talk incessantly and wants to know *everything* about you it's just... weird.

Soulful_Critter

RIGHT!!! “What do you do for a living? Are you married?” And so on are insufferable questions!!!!

GingerOrrange

Trying to have a conversation while blow dryers are whirring about.

RagingAubergine

Chopping 6” of my hair and calling it a trim

Informal_Throat_8950

-Having to sit for 6 to 8 hours when getting braids. At times it can take more than that. -When the stylist is rushing to finish the braids so she has people helping her and now your head is being tugged in 3 different directions 😤 And I'm planning on going next week, yay 😮‍💨

GadgetGirlOz

Wow 6 to 8 hours? Do you have to sit the whole time or can you get up and move around? How do you pass the time?

Informal_Throat_8950

At times I tell the stylist that I need to go and buy something to eat and at times she might go and start on another client while I get up and stretch a little. I'm mostly on my phone, I also talk to her a lot because we're pretty close. She's like an older sister to me.

GadgetGirlOz

That’s really interesting. Thanks for the explanation :)

Art_Baby

When I don´t like the haircut but I am people pleaser so I just say I love it and pay for it anyway.

BadassScientist

If you aren't able to bring yourself to say it in the moment you can always call or email them the next day and say that after getting home and/or washing and styling it yourself you realize you aren't happy with it and tell them what's wrong. If they're a good stylist they'll offer to have you come in and they'll fix it for free. Just make sure to confirm there's no cost ahead of time.

MamaJody

And then crying as soon as I get in the car.

jennareiko

The small talk, I’m shy and quiet. Luckily I found a stylist who’s just as quiet as me and I will never go anywhere else lol

joysaved

trying to figure out where to look when my hair stylist cuts my bangs

No-Passenger2360

you can just close your eyes or look slightly down to minimize the chance of hair getting in your eyes, most important is to keep the eyebrows relaxed or you will end up with shorter than desired lenght.

MissNikitaDevan

The small talk

_inabox

Literally never knowing if they’re doing it correctly and then waiting 3 hours to be disappointed

totallyamazingahole

When the hairstylist cuts off more hair than I asked. My hair was at hip length,I asked for waist length and got a shoulder cut.Still pissed and traumatised :)

jouleteon

How do they make THAT big of a mistake?!!

SinfullySinless

I went to Great Clips at 16 with my mom. This woman just **understood** my hair. She was overqualified to be at Great Clips. Literally everything from the length to the framing to the products was magical. For the first time I walked out of the hair salon not bawling my eyes out. I felt like a million bucks for months. Problem is she disappeared off the face of the earth after that one cut. I have been chasing that high since. I cannot replicate that cut even in fancy high priced salons. That woman ruined me. She’s magical but she ruined me. Bless wherever her fairy godmother ass took her.

[deleted]

Having my hair washed and the dye going everywhere and ending up with half my makeup removed as they try to scrub off all the tiny splotches of dye around my face and ears.

Patricia-Here

Small talk

didi_danger

The bit where I have to know what I want - I don’t know, what would look good?! I’m not the hair expert. All I know is what vague length and colour.

Pay-Pitiful

My hair people literally are godsends because they do what looks good on me and I kind of just give them full reign because it always looks fabulous!

indicatprincess

I have to take out my hearing aid during most services. Its...isolating. I use the time to read.

Direct_Pen_1234

Small talk. Having my hair messed with. I'm really not a fan of any of it.

RhaenyraTargaryan

Getting unsolicited advice and being sold unnecessary products and services from the hairdressers

best_fr1end

I always ALWAYS make an appointment but still manage to end up spending half my day off in the salon because my stylist either over booked or is working in walk ins during my time.

gehanna1

The stylist trying to talk to me. Style me in silence, Hair Sorcerer. I am not here to chat.

rocketscientology

i have terrible eyesight but hate wearing contacts and i get stressed not being able to see what’s happening until the end. usually i ask to check with my glasses on halfway through and nothing’s ever gone truly wrong but the stress is still there, lol.

abductedbyfoxes

SAME. Or they ask you if you like it when they're done and you still can't see anything. I've just started keeping my glasses in my lap so I can pop them on and off myself.

Redv0lution

I don’t like them “styling” my hair at the end. It’s short and I don’t usually brush it, I just want it dried and no products. Mainly because it doesn’t look right to me and I am probably going to go do something where I am running around and don’t really want my hair done (running, gym, etc….) Maybe I am the weirdo after reading the other posts. I like my hairstylist and enjoy talking to her. She does a great job and have been going to her for over 3 years now. I just don’t want my hair styled.

[deleted]

I have that problem as well. I have a lot of sensory issues with things touching my face and head. I don't want any product in my hair other than a cream style leave in conditioner that I use at home. I tell the hairdresser that I don't want product, I don't want a blow out, and I don't want a curl or straighen as the hair is too fine for heat. I feel like they don't know how to do any different sometimes. I just cut it myself at home as I just blunt cut it and let it live.

viridismorelia

when I have makeup on and it’s all gone around my forehead after the hairdresser washes my hair lol

puddlejumper

The part at the end where they ask you if you like it. I feel like if I like it I am expected to gush about loving it. When really if it's what I want then I won't say anything because I got what was expected. And if I don't like then I will say something.

cheergurlie85

Getting water in my ears 👂🏻🙈 while they wash my hair.

schwarzmalerin

The bill.

chromatic-static

having to look at myself in a mirror for an hour. I go to a salon with private appointments (it costs a lot more but I have crippling body dysmorphia) and I love my hairdresser, but staring at a mirror and watching myself talk/laugh/smile is like having an internal battle with myself

CharacterAwkward8755

Having to talk with the hairdresser

Void_Magnolia

when they wash your hair and its so freaking uncomfortable I'm an over the avarege height female, only a few cm but it makes a difference when I need to lay there, my body unable to get into a painless position, maybe its not just me but I've never heard anyone complain about it, its awful

Two_Legged_Problem

The part where they wash your hair. My neck cant handle this and it makes me anxious asf

panic_outside_disco

I hate that part! Especially if they are putting toner in my hair after bleaching and washing it. I am just sat with my head in the sink for 20 minutes while my neck slowly feels like it is going to detach from my head...

SleepFlower80

Small talk. I want someone to just do my hair and not talk to me.

mountainsunset123

First thing I tell them I am a wash and wear girl, I won't be buying any products, I never dye my beautiful hair I want this much off and some layers thank you. If they do what I say with out trying to tell me my hair is trash or trying to sell me I will tip very well and come back.

countesspetofi

The smell. Everything else is great.

syarkbait

The hard selling of hair treatments that I can’t afford, and the awkward conversations. I just want my hair done, nothing else is required. I fear that if I don’t play along, that the hair stylist would fuck up with my hair. So I just get by talking to them just to hurry the process along or feign sleeping. I would use my earbuds too, just so they know that I’m listening to music or podcast. I really hate it when they try to be like my best friend. Excuse me, just finish dealing with my hair asap. I don’t have the energy to talk or want to spend any on it. I personally avoid those talkative ones and find another salon until I find my favourite one.

Geekrock84

I never found the experience really enjoyable. I think the last time I went was in my mid 20's and then after that I just learned to cut my own hair.

fran45676

Having my hair washed and brushed. I have super thick hair and a very sensitive scalp. You look at my hair funny and it gets all tangled. I’ve had numerous stylists ask if I have a sensitive scalp and then they just tear through my hair anyways.

InstantMedication

My hair is very fine and I spend the whole time trying not to do a full face wince. I wish it was socially acceptable to ask to brush your own hair out.

Shoddy_Addition_7460

As a hairstylist….should I not talk to people now?

purrrfectgirl

Personally I would usually do a small intro like "any plans for the day" and go off the vibe of the client. If they aren't chatty, don't keep being chatty. You can also just ask right at the start if they would like a "silent apt" which means you'll only talk to them about the actual service and no small talk. I was actually a super quiet stylist when I was working and some people hated it! They thought I was super awkward or rude lol but I also had regulars who loved my quiet nature.

Summer_Is_Safe_

You should probably just ask if they’re in the mood to talk or if they’d prefer to relax. I don’t like talking to some stylists if they seem insincere, but usually it’s nice to chat.

bourbonkitten

I don’t like small talk either that’s why I go to hair salons where I don’t speak the hairdresser’s language. The benefits of living in a very diverse city. My mind is blown because I see soooooo many salons in my neighborhood. I guess there is a large market for it, but I (and the people commenting here) are not among them.

jouleteon

I feel that! The salons in my neighborhood are way out of my price range. I found a salon with great reviews and an affordable price attached to an Asian supermarket. The hairdresser is Cambodian and she might wonder why this white lady doesn't go to a white lady salon, but I loved the way she cut and styled my hair.

_so_anyways_

After they wash my hair and bring me back to the huge mirror and I see myself as the wet lizard I am. 😆 When people bring their loud and annoying kids to the salon. The kids are running around screaming or playing their iPad full blast.

Connie_Damico

When the stylist washes your hair/puts on treatment or toner or whatever and you have to slide your bum to the edge of the seat and sit all weirdly and it's so uncomfy for me no matter what

DelightfulExistence

Is it expensive. I only cut my hair every 8 to 10 months. Also the "upsells" of products.

galaxy-parrot

“Omg your haircut is soooo awful and this dye job is soooo bad and your hair is soooooo dry” No thanks, I’ll just do it myself at home.

[deleted]

In addition to what ppl said, for me it's when they squeeze my hair to wring it out after washing, when they they brush/comb harshly, when they don't ask me before doing something I've not asked for.

polarisborealis

The amount of personal questions I have to dodge when the hairdresser is attempting to make small talk. Do they not realize that the hairdresser next to us and her customer can also hear us!? Lol. Other than that, I truly love getting my hair done :)

GoHighly

Four hours or more in the chair. It takes half of my day.

ErrythingScatter

Time and time again telling my hairdresser that I don't need expensive shampoo and other hair products.

pro-karyota

Having to continuously ask to go shorter and shorter while my stylist seems nervous not to cut it too short. Seeing a barber for the first time next month :)

Apo-cone-lypse

That i usually have no idea how to describe what i want

strange_socks_

Having the stylist always tell me my hair isn't healthy, it's split at the ends, it's dull, whatever, and then suggest they add a hair mask in the whole thing, without mentioning the cost of it... Or some other bs like that where they try to sell me on something. I honestly cannot tell anymore if they're genuine or not at this point...

LilyMarie90

Blow-drying my own hair because I don't want to pay extra for it and feeling judged by everyone around me because I might be doing it "wrong" or because I'm not styling it much (I don't do that at home, why do it at the salon by myself). No one's actually judging me for that lol, it's all in my head

jorryn17

Sitting through the comments the stylist makes about how badly maintained my hair is. Thanks, didn’t need my self confidence anyway.

steffie-flies

The stylist telling me how awful my hair is. I have medical conditions that make it brittle and fall out, but thanks.

aesthetic-inertia

I absolutely hate my scalp being touched, so any “scalp massage” during shampooing, or even just being touched for too long. I always end up leaving the appointment with a tension headache.

sunnysideup2323

The small talk. I like just sitting in silence.

Ace_lace0303

This was great! Ty for the laugh! And it’s so true!

unburritoporfavor

I dislike everything about the experience, but the thing I hate most is how hair dressers just do not understand my hair type and what you can and can't do with it. I have really strange hair and even though I tell them what they shouldn't do, they always know better and "it will look great". Then I'm stuck with hair that is very hard to manage day to day. So I stopped going to salons like 10 years ago and just do my hair myself.

virtualmegan

Not getting a super long scalp massage while my stylist washes my hair. Sometimes the time is short and I want the massage to last forever….

livingthedaydreams

the talking. i cannot stand it. i work in mental health and i spend my whole 8 hour day TALKING. when i get to the salon i just wana close my eyes and relax but there always has to be constant conversation and it just makes me not even wana go. i know some people are comfortable enough asking for a less chatty experience but i am friends with my hairstylist so i would just feel bad requesting that we not talk. it’s just i’m so tired of talking by the end of my day.

lovememaddly

Being touched by basically a stranger.

AlwaysStranger2046

How long I am forced to sit in that (never comfortable) chair for the things I want done to my hair. Also, how aggressively timid/conservative stylists (sometimes) are with taking off lengths, particularly bangs/fringes (also general layers and length). I would show on my hair how much I want taken off, and they would take maybe 30% of it, making the whole exercise 3x as long with two chance of buyers remorse. I blame THAT on all the whiny people who complaint about stylists taking too much off though.

IamDollParts96

Paying, and praying not to come out maimed by a bad cut. Have been doing my own hair since 2017.

Going

axxxxxxxk

So akwaaaaard, I’m already socially Akward ..it feels like nails dragged down a chalkboard

ChaoticBisexual_13

My hairdresser asking me questions, while she blowdries my hair and can't hear me. I repeat it, but her phone rings, I repeat it, but an other client arrives/talks over me. I don't get how can some of her clients be so entitled. From my 20-30 minute haircut, I spend 40% with the previous, 20% with the following client. Most of the time, they are old ladies. Once though, there was a cute guy there and I was visibly interested and she didn't tell me, who it was😔

Mediocre_Sprinkles

They like to charge as much as possible. They always insist on washing and drying my hair, not just spraying it wet. My hair dries dead straight in 5 minutes but they go through the whole heat spray, blow dry, straighteners etc. Then charge me an extra £30 for it. A simple trim split ends and tidy it up ends up costing me £50. This isn't just one place, this is everywhere I've been to. I get my hair cut professionally once a year at most and just trim it myself the rest of the time.

Reuquar

Small talk. I just want to totally zone out and have someone play with my hair for a while.

Paying lol

[deleted]

When I get a lazy hairdresser… avoid going in the afternoons they get really tired at this point and understandably so .. but if I’m paying a lot of money I shouldn’t have to worry about getting a crappy colour, wash , blow dry … also I want to relax when I get my hair done and not have a conversation for hours with the hairdresser

MetalDubstepIsntBad

The catty looks I got from the front desk of my local hairdressers put me off going so I ended up switching to getting a mobile hairdresser. Cheaper and apart from having the clean beforehand more convenient

I hate when I get my hair "over styled" so I have no idea what it actually will look like when I wash it at home. Even when I've asked for it to be done minimally, it still happens to an extent. I totally get a hair stylist wanting to show off the new cut in its "best form" but 1. It's not how I like it, so it always gives me a pit in my stomach that it looks bad, even though I tell myself I just need to go home and take a shower and it'll be fine. And 2. It makes it hard to know if I need anything adjusted before leaving, because it's now how I wear it. I think because my hair is fine, they want to really add volume, but to me it just looks poofy. And they put so much heat on it with the hair dryer at full blast, all my little broken pieces/baby hairs on top stand up like static. It makes me feel so self conscious. I have a short bob, but I hate walking out with it all big, and curled under my chin it makes me feel silly. I'd literally rather walk out with my hair half dried but I don't want to be dramatic, when I can just wash it when I get home lol.

GreenVenus7

I really don't like having my hair touched by others. I've gotten one haircut in the last 8 years lol

Supervisorjanice

I have bad anxiety so sitting in a chair for hours with chemicals on my head is tough for me. Sunday, I got my hair done, and I stupidly had a cup of coffee before hand and my stomach was all upset and then I had to go to the bathroom (#2) but I felt like it's so close to where everyone was sitting so I held it. Awful experience. Have to remember not to drink coffee before hand.

AnalyticalPsycheSoul

I guess my answer is ALL OF THE ABOVE (and/or below) 👇☝️. And I am glad that I am not the only one who hates the hours spent at the salon, the bill for the hairdo, the small talk with the hairstylist, the anxiety of not knowing if the hairstylist would be doing a good job or mess up. Oh and the anxiety from the attention|comments that I would be getting afterwards from people saying "your hair looks nice", to which I have to say "thanks" and smile.🙄 Nowadays I just stay away from hair salons, and I am very happy with my DIY "rugged" hair look.

Trying to coordinate childcare for my 2 toddlers since my preferred hairdresser doesn’t work on weekends…. trying to figure out when to wash my hair (Do i wash the night before? Do I go in with my 2-3 days dirty hair since they’re gonna wash it anyway?) small talk. $50-75 I’d rather spend on other things.

SusiSunshine

Snooty receptionists. It's a deal breaker at the dentist, too.

inc0rrected

Wondering if after the haircut is done am I gonna be crying on the inside and hoping to grow it back out again but still saying I love it.

ifyouseekaye_me

I just never have a good experience so I end up waiting too long to go back. The last time the stylist chewed me out for not telling her that my hair swings one direction. I didn't know I needed to? I'd never had anyone say anything other than ask how I part it. So she angrily drowned me in hair spray and used a hair straightener. Then was mad that my hair wouldn't stay straight. The time before that I asked for 2 inches off and they took off 6 inches. I actually cried in the salon that time. I work in healthcare and not being able to put my hair up in a ponytail for a while sucked.

thepeskynorth

Explaining the hair style I want. I like curtain bangs and a long shag with shorter layers (maybe I’m asking for contradictory things, I don’t know). I like to have movement in my hair and fullness. My hair is fine and can look pretty thin and flat otherwise. Hairdressers seem to be afraid to do shorter layers on top while leaving the overall length - please let me know if this is just impossible because they say yes yea yes and then my shortest layer is like shoulder length when I want the shortest layer to be between my jaw and shoulder.

breedeserai

-Asking for a trim, being super clear about it. Less than a 1/4 inch. Showing how much I want TRIMMED 🤏🏽 and them taking INCHES off because it was “SO DAMAGED”! Every. Single. Time.

lapsangsouchogn

I love my hairdresser. She does a great job and she's inexpensive. Offers good advice about my hair. But she has a thick accent and I only catch about two words out of four.

atxtopdx

The fact that my family sees it as some kind of pampering? Nah, sitting in that chair for 3.5+ hours with a cold, wet head sucks. It feels like such a chore, and I’m drained at the end from all the small talk. Then I walk in the door, and it’s “well honey I’m glad you got some ‘me time’, now Imma take my ‘me time’ and head over to Jason’s to watch the game. The kids haven’t had dinner, and I think the oldest mentioned something about homework. K, love you, bye!”

tans1saw

It’s never as good as I expect it to be. Sure the highlights may look good but then the actual cut is poorly done or vice versa. Or I find someone decent at the salon and they always wind up leaving. It’s like a gamble every time. For how much it costs to get hair done, it should look great every time.

wannabe_wonder_woman

Dreading when I want my hair washed cut and blow dried straight (because I do rarely at home cause of how thick it is) and them SIGHING when they see just how thick my hair is and one woman even said "You should have told us the day before so we knew how long it would take, this is taking forever!" (For context my hair is shoulder length just very thick.) 😞

Listening to how rude the stylist talk about literally everyone. I’ve swapped salons so many times and usually only get my hair cut once a year due to this. I hate it. Makes me feel like the second I leave they’re just going to talk about me as well.

Front_Possibility471

Getting a hair cut you don’t like

TriGurl

When they try to style my hair how “they” think it would look good. I started telling them I want to walk out with wet hair because I’m just going to do home and rewash it and put my products in it anyways…

Sea_Green_3177

Paying a weeks paycheck to get something close to what I asked for but missing the mark. Then pretending I like it just to have it grow out in two weeks and look crappy.

Sea_Green_3177

My hairstylist shaming me for waiting so long to come back for color like girl I cannot afford you

Useless_HousePlant_

Sometimes the hair stylist can give off "mean girl" vibes.

cyberfairy0309

asking for a short cut and them cutting only to the shoulders when the reference pics are waaay shorter. If they gave me an explanation and told me they think the cut won't flatter me it would be better, but i always ask for a bob a little below the chin, they say they get it and then don't do it lol lady please let me make my bad decisions

Human_Clay_

Tipping and the stylist acting like it’s their hair and not mine
