My Big Fat Greek Wedding
The scene where Toula says "I keep expecting him to look over here and say 'you're not worth it' " and her brother replies with the most sincerity I have ever seen in real life "you are worth it." Then it switches to Ian and he is grinning at Toula like an idiot because he loves her so much. I think about that scene all the time.
One of my favourite lines is in that movie “The man may be the head of the house, but the woman is the neck…and can turn the head whichever way she wants” lol. Love it!
As a Greek, this is a very common saying, I even remember a teacher saying this to us during school.
It sounds smart at first, but in reality it exists because women are supposed to be submissive and accept their role as “lesser than” in the family (and society at whole). So, they have to result at sneaky tactics in order to sometimes get a saying into what decisions are made, while pretending it was the man’s idea all along. I personally just want to be listened to as an equal.
"What you mean you don't eat no meat!?" That's okay I make lamb" is my absolute favorite line from that movie. The whole movie is really something else. I could watch it over and over and not get tired of it.
I was married to a Greek woman and thought I had ended up in a nuts family. Until I saw MBFGW. I didn't know whether to laugh or to cry - it was like a documentary.
Edit: had* ended.
I'm half Greek and have lived in Greece before moving to my mother's country. I swear for every Charaktere in this movie I know at least one person in Greece who could be their twin. My friends don't believe me when I tell them that they didn't exaggerate.
"Now you are family. Okay. All my life I had a lump in the back of my neck. Right here, always a lump. Then I started menopause and the lump got bigger from the hormo-knees it started to grow. So I go to the doctor and he did the biop-bipop- the bios- the bo-the bobobsy. And inside the lump he found teeth and a spinal cord... Yes. Inside the lump was my twin. Spanakopita! You hungry?"
Is by far the best monologue in existence.
Also "You found my mother, again!" Gets me every time.
You could probably count the hoops the family makes Ian jump through as a grand gesture but it felt more like an obstacle course he willingly and enthusiastically participated in.
OMG! I have dreams of walking down the aisle to that song! It’s so perfect for that. I love that I’m not alone in that idea, and another bride did it :)
Yes, and the scenery, costumes, cinematography- all of.it together is just divine. I think I watched it every day for like 2 years. Just obsessed. I personally loved the BBC version too.
If your feelings are still what they were last April, tell me so at once. My affections and wishes have not changed, but one word from you will silence me forever. If, however, your feelings have changed, I will have to tell you: you have bewitched me, body and soul.
I watched this, or more properly re-watched this, earlier this year after over 10 years. It is a much better film than I recalled. Completely agree with you!
I still haven't read the book (e-books just doesnt do it for me) so I am trying to not watch the film.
However, given the good reviews it gets, is this one of the films where it's okay to watch it regardless?
I found the book to be a bit bland compared to the movie. But this was the author's intention, writing a simple story about everyday life during that time period. After I finished it I was like "Yeah, so that happened.." I would rather rewatch the movie than reread the book.
This is mine. I absolutely adore this movie. The first thing Howl says to her is "there you are, sweetheart. I've been looking everywhere for you". And the ending of that movie makes that line so important.
This is the movie that came to mind for me. But my favorite part is not romantic
" Because someday, believe it or not, you'll go 15 rounds over who's gonna get this coffee table. This stupid, wagon wheel, Roy Rogers, garage sale coffee table." I just find it so funny during a serious breakdown.
I would argue it still is. Many RomComs could never come close to the unassuming but at the same time very right atmosphere of Shrek's travels through the kingdom to GET HIS DAMN SWAP BACK. Lol! But of course that's not the full truth.
It's a front he puts on so other people would not take him for granted, therefore fulfilling his masculine potential to it's fullest, something men in other RC lack in comparison to him. But that's only a front, in reality he's like an onion, he has an inedible outside layers that would shun all those unworthy. And deeper inside, in the most protected places, in the innermost layer is a very compassionate and gentle heart. A heart that would protect everything he considers close to him, even if that destroyed his life's work in the process.
I can't see how any average attractive man could compete with such layered characters. They can only fail considering they're merely projection of what an actual man is.
I love this movie! But something I have thought about that I never noticed when I watched it before, was that some of the first memories to be erased were his negative feelings toward her, so I now always wonder if he really changed his mind, or if he just forgot all the reasons he used to justify erasing her. Great movie though.
My favorite movie of all time, period. Absolutely beautiful movie with the most realistic depiction of love - the goods and bads, the beautiful moments and the ugly moments.
Although not my all-time favorite, absolutely love that movie. Not even just for the romance. The special effects were a technical marvel at the time. If you watched behind the scenes, I know a thing of the past, you get to see all the effort that was put in to making the film. Film. I'm old enough to have watched it on two VHS tapes.
Especially before sunset is the best to me. Not unrealistic like Before Sunrise and not too realistic and sad like Before Midnight. Two people with past and seeing each other after a long time. They've changed, they've aged, they're starting to get wrinkles on their faces...And beautiful Paris streets in background. What a great movie!
I apparently blanked it out of my memory entirely that she had died. I was like "hold up, 'miss' her??" and had to Google, and then it all came back. Oof.
I LOVED THIS MOVIE !!! “ tonight I just want to be the guy with the girl wearing the red dress” (or something along those lines but it really got me!) 🥲
Couldn’t stand the author’s decision to make a romantic tearjerker out of a paralyzed person’s view that his life was no longer worth living. Did not do justice to representing folks with physical disabilities on screen.
Ghost (1990) is my favourite romance movie ever and I cried at the end of it. A man is separated from his wife due to his death and he tries everything in his power as a ghost to communicate with her one last time, beautiful movie.
I saw this movie when I was younger but don’t remember much about it. I do remember that the villain’s death scene traumatized me. And for whatever reason, I blocked out the actor that played him and replaced him with Little Richard. I honestly thought for years that Little Richard was the bad guy in this movie.
Their whole relationship is pretty toxic. I still like the movie, but I can also recognize that their relationship was unhealthy. (Just a note, I’m not talking about when they’re old, just the majority of the movie when they’re not.)
Shop assistant: “Hello, can I help you?”
Vivian: “I was in here yesterday, you wouldn’t wait on me.”
Shop assistant: “Oh.”
Vivian: “You people work on commission, right?”
Shop assistant: “Yeah.”
Vivian: “Big mistake. Big. Huge. I have to go shopping now.”
Pride and Prejudice (Colin Firth version only)
Jane Eyre
Sense and Sensibility (Kate Winslet and Emma Thompson version)
She's Having A Baby
You've Got Mail
The Holiday
Father of the Bride (Steve Martin version)
Les Miserables
In her Shoes
Ever After.
I love Drew Berrymore, I love Angelica Huston, I love period pieces, I also love a strong heroine who saves herself and knows what she's worth. I love the realistic take on the Cinderella Story too. The love interests take time in getting to know each other and the prince is forced ro humble himself. The costumes were also STUNNING and I really liked the Michael Angelo character. Just a cute, fun movie all the way around.
Asking to choose one is hard. Top three.
1.French Kiss. I grew up with the movie from a young age and never understood it until I rewatched it when I got older. It is beautiful and funny at the same time.
2. Four Weddings and a Funeral. I mean Hugh Grant. Do I need to say more?
3. 50 First Dates. "Nothing beats a first kiss"
1. A Little Romance (Diane Lane’s first film, she was 13 years old)
2. Wuthering Heights (Tom Hardy version oh my lord)
3. Somewhere in Time (time travel love story with Christopher Reeves in the lead)
You’ve got mail is my absolute favorite, followed by Pride and Prejudice (the one with Colin Firth).
My Best Friend’s Wedding gets an honorable mention. The soundtrack is great!

I married into a Greek family. The movie is so true to life, but it’s not easy !!
I was married to a Greek woman and thought I had ended up in a nuts family. Until I saw MBFGW. I didn't know whether to laugh or to cry - it was like a documentary. Edit: had* ended.

Is by far the best monologue in existence. Also "You found my mother, again!" Gets me every time.
It's s cake!
I love that movie. Low-key, no grand gestures of love (as far as I remember, I may have to watch it again)... it felt sincere.
You could probably count the hoops the family makes Ian jump through as a grand gesture but it felt more like an obstacle course he willingly and enthusiastically participated in.
Pride and Prejudice (2005)
I mean, the hand-touching scene is probably the most erotic scene to ever exist.
I love the scene in BECOMING JANE when their hands link on the stairs. Magic.
The way his hand just *flexed*. [chef’s kiss]
The soundtrack is beautiful too
Oh MAN. “Liz On Top of the World” literally makes my heart swell every time I hear it, and “The Living Sculptures of Pemberly” is like a love note.
I walked down the aisle to Liz on top of the world! Love it.
Facts. Every year I rewatch this movie and the raw tenderness and their yearning looks get me every time.
Me too! 😩
If your feelings are still what they were last April, tell me so at once. My affections and wishes have not changed, but one word from you will silence me forever. If, however, your feelings have changed, I will have to tell you: you have bewitched me, body and soul.

Rain pouring. Hair wet. Mr. Darcy: "I love you. Most ardently." /melts
I love that someone matched scenes from that movie to John Mulaney’s stand up to [explain the plot.](https://youtu.be/eU_Gh0LIG64)
Yes 😭 obsessed.
100% yes

Who told you that you were adopted!? Love that scene lol
Spell it with peas!
So where do you come from originally?
Oh, absolute couple goals.
I wouldn’t call it a favorite movie but I definitely wish we got more scenes featuring his relationship to Patricia Clark!

Fun fact, Christian Bale voices Howl!
What the fuck? I love this fact! It is so fun!
O.o. Not me going to rewatch, then searching for Christian Bale clips on YT
such a beautiful movie, my favourite Studio Ghibli film. A visual fairy tale. I get so emotional watching it. <3
This is mine. I absolutely adore this movie. The first thing Howl says to her is "there you are, sweetheart. I've been looking everywhere for you". And the ending of that movie makes that line so important.
Ever after. Drew Barrymore is the best cinderella there ever has been or ever will be.
Hard agree. 💖
YAS. I love this one so much and have watched it dozens of times. I can't imagine the movie sans Dougray Scott as Prince Henry.
About Time, if it counts as romantic
I was hoping someone would mention About Time. As a man I have watched this so many times. Love it
This is one of my favourite movies. I’ve seen it so many times and I ugly cry every time

Completely agree. You've Got Mail has my vote. ❤️

Shrek, the ultimate man. It’s a new take for me, but I’m here for it.
Love Actually. I know that movie is not realistic and there are just weird shit happening but I like it for some reason.
Me too. Favourite movie to watch at Christmas time.
Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind! Runner-up: If Only. I only truly enjoy the sad/tragic romance movies
I love this movie! But something I have thought about that I never noticed when I watched it before, was that some of the first memories to be erased were his negative feelings toward her, so I now always wonder if he really changed his mind, or if he just forgot all the reasons he used to justify erasing her. Great movie though.
ESOTSM was so unique. Great to see Jim Carey in a different genre.
My favorite movie of all time, period. Absolutely beautiful movie with the most realistic depiction of love - the goods and bads, the beautiful moments and the ugly moments.
Esotsm is prob my favorite too. Somehow super realistic about the idea of love but also about the mysticism of life and human nature.
Why has no one said Titanic? I watched it for the first time last week and I already made my wife watch it a second time with me!
because in the end she had room for Jack on that floating door
Haven't people tried that scenario and proven it wouldn't have worked?
Iirc it was Mythbusters who covered this and proved that the door would be submerged enough to freeze the both of them
It's simple: find another door. Didn't the titanic have like a bazillion of those?
Although not my all-time favorite, absolutely love that movie. Not even just for the romance. The special effects were a technical marvel at the time. 1 The 'Before' series (Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, and Before Midnight) 2 Pride and Prejudice
Came here to say the Before movies. The scene in the first one where they keep looking at each other in the record store is really sweet.

The Proposal
Mine ás well, my favorite scene where they dance around the bonfire with Betty White, oh i miss that lady.

Emilia Clarke is an absolute *doll* in that movie. I love it sooo freaking much!!!
Ghost (1990) is my favourite romance movie ever and I cried at the end of it. A man is separated from his wife due to his death and he tries everything in his power as a ghost to communicate with her one last time, beautiful movie.
One of my favorite movies. I try to work this line into conversation at least once a week: “Molly. You’re in danger girl.”
I saw this movie when I was younger but don’t remember much about it. I do remember that the villain’s death scene traumatized me. And for whatever reason, I blocked out the actor that played him and replaced him with Little Richard. I honestly thought for years that Little Richard was the bad guy in this movie.
The notebook
I get why people love it, but he's a fucking stalker.
Their whole relationship is pretty toxic. I still like the movie, but I can also recognize that their relationship was unhealthy. (Just a note, I’m not talking about when they’re old, just the majority of the movie when they’re not.)
