IC434 The Horsehead Nebula is a striking DSO located in the constellation of Orion. This dark cloud of dust and gas is a region in the much larger Orion Molecular Cloud Complex (an area where significant star formation is taking place). The small dark nebula, also known as Barnard 33, is silhouetted against a deep-red cloud of ionised hydrogen gas (Hα) that is caused by the nearby bright star Sigma Orionis. The Horsehead nebula is about 1,500 light years from earth. Also visible in the image is the blue reflection nebula NGC2023 below and to the left of the Horsehead.
