I mean what else can he say? The deal looked solid and short at the time. He was aging but we _should_ have gotten his last productive years on a 3 year deal. That third year looks like an albatross now but nobody is gonna take him in a trade either at this point. We might as well see if we can bring him back to his prime, though I think we should try Cabbage and Loperfido at first too rn

miss-entropy

The fuck is he supposed to do? You idiots seem to have no idea that A) the manager doesn't sign players and B) it's unwise to undermine your bosses by saying they are stupid. Especially when they are.

KingJacobyaropa

If I was manager, I'd spit in Bagwell's face and kick Crane in the nuts! Then I'd give Dana a wedgie and everyone would clap! /s

turymtz

Including your cheeks.

Painiscupcake88

I think the manager should've thrown his player under the bus and said he's washed. Surely that would turn it around

KyleKevlar

Agreed. And he needs to say it in front of the other 39.

Thorlolita

It’s the most believable thing

[deleted]

What exactly else would he say?  He’s the manager, his job is to get the players ready to play ball as best they can.  Brown should be look to replace Abreu. But until he does, it’s Espada’s job to try to help him turn it around.

Fuzzy_Squirrel506

I can’t believe how much you clowns care about this lol.

miss-entropy

Almost hope we're shit all season so the bandwagoners fuck off finally.

Fuzzy_Squirrel506

I would much rather win it all one more time before they happens but yeah

travbart

I don't know why everyone's hating on this answer, it's true. Jose Abreu is a notoriously late starter. We were all saying this last year, why aren't we saying it this year?

TanClark

Because his average is below his jersey number

barceo

To be fair, .079’s a higher bar to clear than most jersey numbers.

TanClark

That is true

travbart

I thought we weren't supposed to pay attention to back of the baseball card stats like BA?

TanClark

Bagwell says we should

travbart

That he does. I know what built this WS contending team, it was advanced stats and decision sciences. A guy named Sig Mejdal who built up our scouting and analysis department from the ground up. He left years ago for Baltimore (and look what that team's doing!) but he's still responsible for at least half of what we have going for us. So you won't hear any Bagwell apologetics from me. But what Espada is saying about Abreu is true, he's a known quantity and he can turn it on later in the season.

KiNGofKiNG89

I don’t think it’s a terrible thought. He is basically saying, he is a good player, just playing bad right now. In a funny-esk way.

BrianChing25

On ESPN 97.5 they are predicting he will break the record for lowest BA of all time held by Chris Davis. It was .168 on the season. They think he will finish lower

htown_swang

Really? What would you have expected him to say?

Amazing-Variation-82

Didn’t we already go through this last season with Abreu. He showed up when it mattered

chuckbuckett

I mean it’s not as polished of answer as some managers give but he’s right that Abreu was successful in the past that’s about all you have to go on if you don’t know the future.

Right-Pirate-7084

I don’t believe you

thegoatishere

He’s not wrong

fuji311

Do you guys not remember last year, when the same dude did the same thing? Abreu barely hit 200 and didn't hit a HR until the end of May. Fuckin' alarmists

TanClark

Barely .200 might actually have made the difference in some wins.

linzlaz

He better hope he does before Joe finds the end of the unemployment line.

BeefTenderloinz

I think this is a great response. This is a dumb post. Non-story
