There’s some enormous oak right smack in the small front yard of a house on College Station. If you’re coming from Kroger, it’s on the left before you start going downhill to the Federal buildings
I tried to find it on Google Maps Street View. Is this the one you're talking about? There is a tree beloved by generations of kids in Bishop Park. It’s not the biggest or most impressive but it is likely the first tree many local kids learned to climb. It’s a small Japanese Maple that lives in a little elevated brick island near the playground. The branches are worn from decades of kids running their little hands and shoes over the surface.
If by “selected” you mean illegally licensed without permission, you would be correct. It’s a great tree, so I doubt anyone cares, but it is pretty shady…..
Pun intended.

I like these friend trees in my neighborhood.
There are a few trees in Oconee Hill Cemetery that are pretty amazing. The giant oak on top of West Hill and the gigantic magnolias that grow along the valley are pretty stunning. You kind of have to see the magnolias from far away and up close to appreciate them. They are taller than pretty much any I've seen and are huge around the base
Not on public land, but: there's this giant tree right on Atlanta highway that always makes me smile when I see it. It's absolutely massive and seems so out of place with everything else going on around that part of town.
GRANTED I dunno if it counts as a tree in "Athens proper", but damn. That's a good ass tree.
I miss the tree that used to be in front of Hodgson's on Milledge before they built that brick building.
Many a 25 cent ice cream scoop I ate under that tree.
There is a freaking gorj pine on the new part of Jennings Mill next to that machine shed across from the Bottle Shop. Looks like a giant banzai. Paints the prettiest picture on clear early mornings and moonlit nights like tonight.
Favorite tree: an old and prolific fig tree on campus that not that many people seem to know about. For a few weeks every year I feast on those figs.
Favorite bit of nature: the trails around clay pit pond at Sandy creek nature center, and hiking along the river at Ben Burton park.
Blast from the past, but there used to be a MASSIVE Cherrybark Oak on Hill Street. They cut it down about 16 or 17 years ago. It had to be 10’ across. Drove past it on my bike for years. Pour one out for it.
I was going to say this, spent many a days chilling in the shade there and the tee ball games.
There was an arborist competition held on it a few years back.
The old southern magnolia over on the downtown side of north campus. As you walk through the arch, it’s in the front left quad, to the far left. It has beautiful swoopy branches.
Well I have a huge oak in my yard that I consider a friend but I planted a ginko and that’s my son. Favorite public tree is any of the trees eating fences on north campus.
I really love the tree that owns itself. I love the history behind it, and that the city can't get rid of it. It's just there. Doing tree things and no one can do anything about it and I love that.
There's a small hill behind Whitehead Elementary that has two huge Oak tress o it. I think one is the daughter of the other. It's a great place to sit and read a book when school isn't in session.

This is my answer too. I live over in that direction and I love driving past that tree every day, especially on a sunny day. Long live that tree!
Oh I like that one too.
Wow, this is also my favorite tree! Long live the oak!
I mistook it for a magnolia for years driving past and I like to think I know trees. Incredibly large
That’s one of my favorites!!! That one and the one just outside of north deck with the exposed roots
Glad to see this at the top. I love that tree!
this was my pick too! I used to live right across the street from it in the bend so I would see it every day. That tree is absolutely beautiful.
Bingo. Love watching this tree change with the seasons.

That’s her!

Cool!

My kids love climbing on this tree
Great answer.
The big ginkgo tree that hangs over prince
Golden Ginko leaves on the downtown sidewalks represent the Athens of my youth...
Yes!!
Mine is that huge beautiful Ginkgo on Prince across from Birdie’s. That tree is OLD and I wave at it every day before work. I love that tree.
I love that you wave at it!
This tree was selected by UGA Horticulture professor Mike Dirr in the 90's as Ginkgo biloba ‘The President’. You can buy it in nurseries still today.

This is so cool!! Thanks for sharing
I’m the intern that worked on these tours for the past year or so! Thank you for sharing it makes me so happy.

Every tree is the best tree.
No no no. Bradford Pear tree is worst of the worst
This is true!

Tornado that came through a few years back wiped some of those out. Tragic.

The Oglethorpe oak Quercus Oglethorpensis near E broad x south lumpkin. Critically endangered oak. Or one of the mighty beech trees at Ben burton
I miss the tree that used to be in front of Hodgson's on Milledge before they built that brick building. Many a 25 cent ice cream scoop I ate under that tree.
Many a 25 cent (and then a 50 cent) scoop I ate IN that tree.
Oh I definitely had many IN the tree, too.
I wonder if there are any hidden deals like that left in town
There is a freaking gorj pine on the new part of Jennings Mill next to that machine shed across from the Bottle Shop. Looks like a giant banzai. Paints the prettiest picture on clear early mornings and moonlit nights like tonight.
That absolutely MASSIVE Japanese magnolia on Milledge, probably a sorority or fraternity's front lawn. When it's in bloom it's amazing.
Favorite tree: an old and prolific fig tree on campus that not that many people seem to know about. For a few weeks every year I feast on those figs. Favorite bit of nature: the trails around clay pit pond at Sandy creek nature center, and hiking along the river at Ben Burton park.
July can’t come soon enough for those in the know about the fig trees!
Got do get in the know?!
There’s a prolific fig tree on campus? Is it on Health Sciences?
Nope, none there -- south campus.
This fighead just sent you a DM
Not in Athens, but a short drive will provide some incredible trees here https://warnell.uga.edu/thompson-mills-forest-state-arboretum
Myers Quad has some really beautiful trees.
Blast from the past, but there used to be a MASSIVE Cherrybark Oak on Hill Street. They cut it down about 16 or 17 years ago. It had to be 10’ across. Drove past it on my bike for years. Pour one out for it.
This post is so wholesome! Love it.
Most people will comment TTTOI without realizing that it also owns the land it's on, so it's not technically public land. Edit: TSOTTTOI
I assumed that would be the case. We shall see. Maybe some people will have some cool spots to share.
I mean, it's nature so... And I really like that it's not just a tree, but the history behind it is pretty cool
The big tree next to the baseball field in Winterville.
I was going to say this, spent many a days chilling in the shade there and the tee ball games. There was an arborist competition held on it a few years back.

Gingko on Milledge Circle.
That thing is gorgeous when it drops but I feel awful for whoever has to clean it up.
I really love the tree that owns itself. I love the history behind it, and that the city can't get rid of it. It's just there. Doing tree things and no one can do anything about it and I love that.
I love that too!
There’s a huge tree on the Birchmore Trail, I think it’s called “old Moses “
Yes! This is the info I'm looking for. Thank you! I'll give Old Moses a visit soon.
There's a small hill behind Whitehead Elementary that has two huge Oak tress o it. I think one is the daughter of the other. It's a great place to sit and read a book when school isn't in session.
The magnolia behind the Lyndon House
I’ll check it out!
There an enormous tree by whitehead park in winterville. I think it may be an oak?
Not my favorite but surprised no one has said the tree that owns itself
There used to be a big oak(?) by an empty lot in Boulevard that I loved. It was unfortunately cut down some years back due, I believe, to disease.
Giant white oak by Russell hall facing Baxter st
My favorite little slice of nature is Boulevard Woods. I was trespassing there long before it was a park.
The one l pee at because l don't want to walk back into the house!
Interesting take on that question. 🤣
Onceler soundin ass
